Two stories are vying for your attention this morning: <\/strong>The prospect that we\u2019re in the early days of the second wave of covid and Egypt adjusting to the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But first: October inflation figures are due out tomorrow <\/strong>from the Central Bank of Egypt and Capmas and will feed straight into the Thursday meeting of the CBE\u2019s monetary policy committee. Annual urban inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f3b6ca2c-4abd-438e-90bc-691dfe2bea84\">ticked up<\/a> to 3.7% in September, but remained near a record low as seasonal factors such as the reopening of schools had a smaller-than-expected effect on monthly prices. <strong>Expect interest rates to be left on hold<\/strong> according to six of eight analysts and economists in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/70edd6ec-97e3-4897-a1a8-7d1a447555b3\">our poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The results of the second stage of the parliamentary elections will be announced <\/strong><strong>on 15 November<\/strong>, head of the National Elections Authority Lashin Ibrahim said yesterday on the final day of voting. The two-day vote took place in 13 of Egypt\u2019s 27 provinces with more than 31 mn people eligible to vote. The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/virus-outbreak-abdel-fattah-el-sissi-egypt-cairo-national-elections-225aefa44dc68ce93fae41ffba095c10\">Associated Press<\/a> has coverage.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alex.technesummit.com\/2020\">Techne Summit 2020<\/a><\/strong> wraps up today in Alexandria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beware of misleading Black Friday discounts, says consumer watchdog:<\/strong> Retailers who peddle fake or misleading discounts for Black Friday later this month could face fines ranging between EGP 50k and EGP 2 mn, the Consumer Protection Agency said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3khhJ3i\">statement<\/a>. Black Friday \u2014 sometimes called \u201cWhite Friday\u201d in Egypt by the more bland among us \u2014 is a straight import of the American consumer extravaganza and takes place this year on 27 November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt will announce the Saqqara area\u2019s \u201clargest\u201d archaeological discovery in the <\/strong><strong>next few days<\/strong>, Tourism Minister Khaled El Enany <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35b32dO\">said during a press conference<\/a> at the site yesterday. The find includes new wells and colored coffins, whose numbers exceed those <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/25059e93-687e-4894-a561-83c2986aa99d\">discovered in the area in October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The October 2021 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, which were scheduled to be<\/strong><strong> held in Morocco, will be postponed until 2022 <\/strong>because of the pandemic, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2020\/11\/04\/pr20333-morocco-world-bank-group-imf-annual-meetings-in-morocco-postponed-until-2022\">IMF statement<\/a>. The statement does not make clear whether plans for the Spring meetings have also changed, or whether they will be held virtually or in person. The meetings typically take place in Washington, DC, for two years in a row before rotating every third year to another member state.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-02\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a><strong> Daily covid tally reaches highest level in more than three months:<\/strong> The Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3eEyVyb\">reported<\/a> 239 new covid-19 infections yesterday, the most daily cases reported since 31 July. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 109,201 confirmed cases of covid-19. The ministry also reported 13 new deaths, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 6,368. We now have a total of 100,342 confirmed cases that have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The infection rate could double and the death toll triple in December and January if the<\/strong><strong> public continues to ignore the government\u2019s call to wear facemasks<\/strong>, Health Minister Hala Zayed warned in a press conference yesterday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e7nJj8rQ6h0\">watch, runtime: 33:16)<\/a>, noting that deaths related to respiratory illnesses increase during those months worldwide. Cairo and Alexandria have the most covid-19 cases in Egypt, while Upper Egypt governorates have reported the least, Zayed said. Housewives and retirees accounted for the biggest share of cases, followed by workers in the health sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public should take precautionary measures to avoid a new lockdown, Zayed warned in a <\/strong><strong>call-in last night <\/strong>to Kelma Akhira\u2019s Lamees El Hadidi. Zayed warned that the number of covid-19 infections had begun to increase and urged the public to wear masks and maintain social distancing to avoid any restrictions that could disrupt the economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zayed wants companies to play ball: <\/strong>While schools and universities will remain open, she called on companies to split workers into shifts and lower the number of staff in the workplace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JCDN-ETvFKw\">(watch, runtime: 23:52)<\/a>. Berat Albayrak\u2019s resignation throws the economy into further turmoil as the value of the lira continues to plunge and inflation climbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethiopia\u2019s foreign minister, head of intelligence, and army chief were all sacked <\/strong><strong>yesterday by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed<\/strong> as a military offensive Ahmed started in the Tigray region rolled into its fifth day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ethiopia-conflict\/ethiopian-prime-minister-fires-top-officials-as-conflict-in-tigray-region-escalates-idUSKBN27O088\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Ahmed is attempting to put down an uprising by the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front, who have opposed Ahmed\u2019s nationalist policies and his attempts to reduce their decades-long grip on Ethiopian politics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- Emirates NBD\u2019s net profit plunged 55% y-o-y in 9M2020 as it<\/strong><strong> more than doubled its loan loss provisions<\/strong>, according to the bank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emiratesnbd.com\/plugins\/FinanceManagement\/QuaterlyReports\/AnnouncementEnglish\/EmiratesNBD_Q3_2020_PressRelease_English.pdf\">earnings release (pdf)<\/a>. The credit impairment provisions \u201cmore than offset\u201d its income from Turkey\u2019s DenizBank, which Emirates NBD acquired last year. His first priority though will be to assemble a task force to end the rampant spread of covid-19 and is scheduled to lay out his strategy on Monday. The projections follow similar forecasts from the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/307c82aa-8655-4348-9cdd-bc0c68450f60\">IMF<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3b26bbc4-43a9-45cd-a0f2-57a40ee7472c\">World Bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3862b982-c1f2-4b9d-8edd-cca7a37d9d71\">Deutsche Bank<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/376368f9-a898-4dd3-af9e-b6cda3018b9f\">European Bank for Reconstruction and Development<\/a>. Fitch <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2020\/10\/20\/egypts-economy-is-on-track-to-finish-the-year-having-grown-3-5-23537\/\">projected last month<\/a> that Egypt would close out 2020 clocking economic growth of 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But we\u2019ll be spending more than we make: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s budget and current account balances are both projected to stay in the negative over the coming four years, Fitch says. The budget deficit will average at 10% of GDP between now and 2024, while the current account deficit will average 2.5%. France has been the target of anger throughout the Muslim world after Macron defended Charlie Hebdo\u2019s publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohamed and announced plans to crack down on what he described as \u201cIslamist separatism\u201d among French Muslims.
