A total of 200 Senate members have been elected, with the 100 remaining spots in the 300-seat chamber set to be decided by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, <strong>aspiring candidates for the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/74bf9891-b38f-463b-9460-ca73c788f726\">upcoming parliamentary elections<\/a><\/strong><strong> have until <\/strong><strong>Saturday to submit their applications<\/strong> to the National Election Authority (NEA), reports <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2RE165F\">Al Shorouk<\/a>. The elections kick-off on 21 October when expats from the 14 governorates included in the first phase of voting go to the polls. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/74bf9891-b38f-463b-9460-ca73c788f726\">We have the full breakdown here<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>The cabinet\u2019s decision to relax some restrictions on mass gatherings<\/strong><strong> comes into effect tomorrow.<\/strong> Public wedding celebrations, funeral prayers, expos, and some sports and educational activities will resume \u2014 subject to some restrictions \u2014 for the first time since March after the government <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/716f7c70-98f4-45b4-b8f5-fa241bf5531f\">last week agreed to ease curbs on gatherings<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>EFG Hermes\u2019 virtual investor conference kicks off tomorrow<\/strong> and wraps next Thursday, 1 October. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/2ndvirtualconference.efghermes.com\/pages\/home.aspx\">visit the conference website here<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>The Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce is <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/egypt-to-host-virtual-seminar-on-trade-with-mercosur\/\">hosting a webinar<\/a><\/strong><strong> on<\/strong><strong> Egypt-<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercosur.int\/en\/\">Mercosur<\/a><\/strong><strong> trade today<\/strong>. The online conference is expected to discuss trade between Egypt and the South American economic bloc, and follows a meeting with the Food Export Council <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dfb18dec-16bd-40b5-8126-320a9b9e422d\">held last week<\/a> with Brazil\u2019s ambassador in Cairo.<\/p><p><strong>Oriental Weavers chairman Mohamed Farid Khamis passed away on Saturday at<\/strong> <strong>the age of 80 <\/strong>following a long struggle with illness, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZUOTy9\">local press<\/a> reports, citing a statement from the Egyptian Federation of Investors Associations (EFIA), over which he presided as chairman. Khamis died in the US while receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. A prominent local brand, EGX-listed <a href=\"https:\/\/orientalweavers.com\/press-releases\/\">Oriental Weavers<\/a> is an Egypt-based company that specializes in machine-woven carpets and rugs for the local and global market, with subsidiaries in the US and China. Khamis\u2019 Orientals Group also operates <a href=\"https:\/\/oud-egypt.com\/\">Orientals Urban Development<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonholdings.com\/our-operations\/opc\/\">Orientals Petrochemicals Company<\/a>.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>The Health Ministry <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3iNjqW8\">reported<\/a><\/strong><strong> 128 new covid-19 infections yesterday<\/strong>, down from 131 the day before. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 101,900 confirmed cases of covid-19. The ministry also reported 17 new deaths, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 5,750. We now have a total of 88,666 confirmed cases that have fully recovered.<\/p><p><strong>Covid-19 has made Egypt\u2019s efforts to develop human capital all the more crucial:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s education and health reform programs funded by the World Bank could help the country to preserve improvements made to human capital development amid the covid-19 pandemic, Maria Laura Sanchez Puerta, the World Bank\u2019s human development program leader in Egypt, writes in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/arabvoices\/given-covid-19-egypts-investments-human-capital-are-increasingly-crucial\">a blog post<\/a>. The USD 500 mn project to reform the education system and the USD 530 mn healthcare program are supplementing the slight gains made over the previous decade: it is estimated that a child born in 2020 is likely to be 49% as productive as one enjoying complete education and full health, compared to the 48% productivity of a child born 10 years earlier. \u201cThe crisis created by the pandemic has made Egypt\u2019s investments in human capital more crucial than ever \u2014 both to protect its fragile gains and spur its future generations onto greater productivity,\u201d she writes.<\/p><p><strong>EgyptAir is offering discounts of up to 20% for flyers who buy vouchers worth<\/strong><strong> EGP 300-700 before 20 October<\/strong>, the company announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/33L5XrB\">a statement<\/a>. The offer hands customers who buy a EGP 300 voucher a 10% discount on flight tickets, while a EGP 500 voucher carries a 15% discount and a EGP 700 voucher grants a 20% discount. The vouchers are valid for one year. The national flag carrier <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/996ae351-6ff0-4c68-9a0f-0d56828e6efb\">lost some EGP 3 bn<\/a> in revenues during 2Q2020 when flights were grounded due the pandemic. The airline was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b9e7c123-3595-4128-aa8b-b2c47f3f1ca0\">operating at around 45%<\/a> of its pre-covid capacity two months after flights were resumed at the beginning of July, but is still haemorrhaging <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/996ae351-6ff0-4c68-9a0f-0d56828e6efb\">EGP 600-700 mn every month<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>International carriers are also getting a helping hand: <\/strong>Airlines operating at airports in the Red Sea, South Sinai and Marsa Matrouh governorates will be granted a 50% discount on landing and accommodation fees, and a 20% discount on ground services, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/35Pqkq3\">local press<\/a> reports, citing a decision by Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Manar published in the Official Gazette.<\/p><p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- Apparently, some people miss flying so much that airlines may begin offering a<\/strong><strong> \u201cflight to nowhere\u201d that takes off and lands in the same destination<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/09\/15\/airlines-sell-flights-to-nowhere-that-take-off-land-in-one-place.html\">CNBC<\/a>. The idea could help hard-hit air carriers like Singapore Airlines shore up revenues, while providing nostalgic passengers with the chance to fly for a few hours. The tech-heavy Nasdaq extended losses for a third day on news that the Trump administration was moving to block downloads of Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat, while the S&amp;P 500 hit six-week lows due to the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-09-18\/stock-traders-brace-for-quadruple-witching-amid-options-anxiety?sref=mmeFTDW1\">quadruple witching<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a quarterly event when all equity derivatives expire on the same day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-09-17\/asia-stock-futures-edge-higher-dollar-retreats-markets-wrap?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> says. Elsewhere, the pan-European Stoxx 600 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-europe-stocks\/travel-stocks-slump-in-europe-as-virus-cases-surge-banks-drag-idUSKBN2690Z8\">was 0.7% lower<\/a> on Friday as investors fretted about rising covid-19 cases in Europe.<\/p><p><strong>The lack of a new iPhone model in Apple\u2019s \u201cunderwhelming\u201d product launch last<\/strong><strong> week didn\u2019t help the tech company\u2019s nosediving market value<\/strong>, which has dropped 22.6% \u2014 or USD 532 bn \u2014 since its 2 September intraday record of USD 137.98 \/ share, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/09\/18\/apple-has-quietly-dropped-22percent-from-its-peak-giving-up-500-billion-in-market-cap.html\">CNBC<\/a> said Friday. While Apple\u2019s product launch <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dfb18dec-16bd-40b5-8126-320a9b9e422d\">last week<\/a> \u2014 which showed off a revamped iPad, Apple Watch 6, Apple One subscription plan, but no new iPhone \u2014 is partially to blame, the iPhone maker\u2019s stock has dropped in line with <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6000d48a-dc88-4df7-a6c9-c743d0e2f90e\">the sell-off on the Nasdaq<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Trump approves TikTok-Oracle agreement \u201cin concept\u201d:<\/strong> In an about-turn, The Donald yesterday announced that he had approved Oracle\u2019s offer to take over TikTok\u2019s US operations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-09-19\/trump-says-he-s-approved-oracle-deal-for-u-s-tiktok-operations?srnd=premium&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. The US Commerce Department <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/a439ead01b75fc958c722daf40f9307c\">said Friday<\/a> that it would move to ban the Chinese social media giant from the US as of today, but Trump yesterday said that he had given his approval to the agreement \u201cin concept.\u201d US companies would own 53% of the new TikTok Global company and Chinese investors 36%, satisfying US demands it be under American control, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-signs-off-on-deal-allowing-tiktok-to-continue-u-s-operations-11600551352?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports, citing an unnamed source familiar with the pact.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>US ELECTION WATCH- <\/strong><strong>Women\u2019s rights champion and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG)<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-court-ginsburg-obituary\/u-s-supreme-courts-ginsburg-a-liberal-dynamo-championed-womens-rights-idUSKBN26A003\">has died<\/a><\/strong><strong> at 87<\/strong>, after spending 27 years on the US\u2019 nine-member Supreme Court. The death of liberal RBG \u2014 the second woman ever to hold a seat on the court since its establishment \u2014 will allow US President Trump to appoint a replacement justice, expanding the court\u2019s conservative majority 6-3. This could not only drastically change the outcome of upcoming Supreme Court hearings on issues such as gun control and voting rights, but also <a All 11 economists and analysts surveyed expect the MPC to leave rates on hold for the fifth consecutive meeting after its record 300 bps emergency cut in March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where rates stand currently:<\/strong> The CBE\u2019s overnight deposit rate is at 9.25% and the lending rate is at 10.25%. The main operation and discount rates are both at 9.75%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t expect low inflation to prompt a resumption of the monetary easing cycle.<\/strong> Analysts say that the central bank is unlikely to be lured into cutting rates by low inflation, which fell to a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c6d5bc25-216b-4cc9-9246-92eefbcacd4c\">10-month low of 3.4%<\/a> last month. \u201cOur expectation is that the central bank will keep interest rates steady despite the decline in inflation,\u201d said Mona Bedeir, senior economist at Prime Holding. \u201cThe central bank is reassured of its ability to achieve its inflationary goal and therefore its focus is on the stability of the exchange rate and the attractiveness of domestic debt instruments to compensate for the shortage of other foreign exchange sources of transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most analysts are expecting inflation to tick up in the months ahead:<\/strong> Mohamed Abu Basha, EFG Hermes\u2019 head of macroeconomic research, expects the annual inflation rate to average 5% in the coming months, with a slight uptick towards the end of 2020 due to the base effect. The recent doubling of an industry-support package of loans provided by the CBE to EGP 200 bn gives further impetus for a rate hold, Abu Basha added. Pharos\u2019 head of research Radwa El Swaify and HC\u2019s Monette Doss are of the same mind, with both expecting inflation to remain between 5-5.5% in the near future. El Swaify also expects the seasonal back-to-school uptick in inflation to raise the headline rate 1%. The central bank currently sees inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7d254786-f3d1-4a39-aa5e-0d98804cb5bf\">averaging 6.2%<\/a> in 4Q.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But then again, it might not:<\/strong> Renaissance Capital forecast in a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2efff360-1ba5-4323-8659-b29a24c332d0\">research note<\/a> last week that inflation will remain below the lower bound of the CBE\u2019s 9% (+\/- 3%) target inflation range through to the end of the year amid a continued slump in consumer demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capital Economics, meanwhile, suggests that the CBE will keep rates on hold to support the EGP<\/strong>, which has rallied 1.6% against the greenback since the beginning of August. \u201cEven though inflation will remain weak, that alone is unlikely to be enough to prompt policymakers to resume the loosening cycle \u2026 the CBE appears to have shifted back to supporting the currency,\u201d James Swanston, MENA economist at the research firm, wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The all-important carry trade:<\/strong> Despite the CBE having room to cut rates, the bank will want to maintain Egypt\u2019s position as having one of the highest real interest rates in emerging markets, analyst Hani Abu El Fotouh suggests. Amid muted remittances and weak tourism, foreign inflows into government debt are currently Egypt\u2019s largest source of hard currency, making the prospect of losing portfolio flows \u201cmuch more\u201d costly than any gains the economy would make from a rate cut, says Abu Bakr Imam, head of research at Sigma Capital.
