Thank you, friends, for your support.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>The House of Representatives gives no sign of wanting to go on recess this summer<\/strong>, with MPs set to give their final approval to no less than nine bills today and tomorrow, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jfmATb\">Al Shorouk<\/a>. Among the bills business-relevant bills expected to come up: the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4a90c348-e89b-47d3-ad0f-c47a4c4dfbd1\">1% corona tax<\/a><\/strong> on employee wages, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d8ff7c31-d68b-4d6c-8c97-b7a2992128a2\">Banking and Central Bank Act<\/a><\/strong> (with its 1% tithe on industry profits), and amendments to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d728f3a7-1c89-4081-82a9-554adbe7d2a3\">Public Enterprises Act<\/a>. The House of Representatives will also discuss today extending Egypt\u2019s joint electricity grid with Libya across North Africa to Tunisia, Algeria and Mauritania, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/07\/18\/1367515\">local press<\/a> reports. Deputy House Speaker Soliman Wahdan had threatened MPs back in June that their packed agenda and the coming elections for the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dostor.org\/3108263\">could mean MPs don\u2019t get a break<\/a> this summer.<\/p><p><strong>State-run K-12 schools will be back in session on 17 October<\/strong>, the Education Ministry said <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hc1Ae2\">in<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hc1Ae2\">a statement<\/a>, meaning public-school students have just been handed one of the longest summers they\u2019ve ever had. The first term will end on 6 February, followed by a 15-day mid-year break, and the school year will wrap on 24 June 2021. The ministry still hasn\u2019t decided the shape learning will take, but schools are likely to see some form of \u201cblended learning\u201d come fall. Public schools usually open somewhere around the third week of September.<\/p><p><strong>Kids at private schools shouldn\u2019t hold their breath hoping for a long break: <\/strong>We\u2019re aware of three top private schools that have told parents they are sticking to their planned opening dates, with one due to head back as early as mid-August. <strong>And there\u2019s been no word on when classes will resume at universities.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Prepare to be flooded with billboard ads of Senate candidates: <\/strong>The National Elections Authority has published <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hc7PP0\">campaigning rules<\/a> for candidates running for the newly reconstituted upper house of parliament as we get ready to head to the polls on 11-12 August.<\/p><p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>GOOD NEWS- New cases in Egypt have reached a new two-month low.<\/strong> The Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jmlzca\">yesterday reported<\/a> 698 new infections \u2014 <strong>the lowest single-day toll since 19 May<\/strong> when 720 new confirmed cases were reported. Egypt has now reported a total of 87,172 confirmed cases of covid-19. The ministry also confirmed <strong>63 new deaths<\/strong> from covid-19 yesterday, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 4,251. We now have a total of 27,868 cases who have fully recovered.<\/p><p><strong>Prominent figures in the tourism industry are calling on the CBE to rethink its <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/16\/cbe-confirms-egp-50-bn-tourism-support-program-8498\/\">tourism<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/16\/cbe-confirms-egp-50-bn-tourism-support-program-8498\/\">support program<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> The EGP 50 bn initiative, which hands out soft loans to support companies in the sector, requires recipients to allocate 85% of the funding they receive to paying salaries and wages and the remaining 15% to funding other operating expenses. Some in the industry are asking the central bank to allow them more flexibility with how they spend the money, complaining that 15% is insufficient to cover maintenance and utilities and is preventing many companies from reopening, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3eEQz3d\">Al Shorouk<\/a> reports.<\/p><p><strong>Egyptian tour operators and others in the sector are struggling to collect USD 1 bn in <\/strong><strong>receivables<\/strong> from offshore travel companies, according to estimates by the Federation of Tourism Chambers, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3eHGfHN\">Al Shorouk<\/a> reports.<\/p><p><strong>Some 3k companies<\/strong><strong> are caught up in the unprecedented crisis<\/strong>, which deepened for many in the industry after Saudi Arabia took the unprecedented step of cancelling the Umrah and Hajj pilgrimage trips, according to a report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ODOcTO\">International Air Transport Association<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Meanwhile, some 31 hotels across six governorates <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/32vgckC\">received health certificates<\/a><\/strong> last week that allow them to reopen their doors. The operators are in the Red Sea, South Sinai, Luxor, Greater Cairo, Matrouh and Suez governorates.<\/p><p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"https:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/7\/SOMA-ENTERPRISE-JULY1-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\"><\/a><\/p><p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>WHO says uptick in cases, limited data in EastMed are cause for concern: <\/strong>The covid-19 pandemic in the Eastern Mediterranean region remains alarming \u2014 and unreliable data makes it hard to say just how bad things are, the World Health Organization (WHO) said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/media\/news\/whos-regional-director-on-the-evolving-covid-19-pandemic-in-the-region.html\">in a statement<\/a>. \u201cSaudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq [reported] almost 70% of all cases,\u201d it noted. Even with underreporting, deaths in the region are (outside of Egypt) on an upward trajectory, increasing by 13% last week alone. The total case tally jumped by nearly 10% in the same period, the statement notes added.<\/p><p><strong>G20 finance officials vow more support for global economy\u2026 <\/strong>G20 finance ministers and central bankers pledged to keep deploying \u201call available policy tools\u201d to support the global economy against the coronavirus pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-g20-saudi\/g20-officials-pledge-to-keep-cooperating-to-bolster-global-economy-idUSKCN24J0QB\">Reuters<\/a> reports. In a statement following a virtual meeting yesterday, the officials said that the world would recover from the economic shock as countries reopened but said more support was needed to protect jobs, ensure financial stability and hedge against further risks caused by the virus.<\/p><p><strong>\u2026but refused to extend the debt freeze for poorest countries into next year:<\/strong> The G20 have called on bilateral creditors to the world\u2019s poorest countries to freeze debt repayments for only the second half 2020, despite sources claiming strong support for extending it into next year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-g20-debt\/g20-finance-officials-poised-to-recommend-extension-of-debt-freeze-idUSKCN24J0KX\">Reuters<\/a> said. The statement also didn\u2019t acknowledge calls for full debt cancellation for low-income countries, rather than the current \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/coronavirus\/policy-responses\/a-debt-standstill-for-the-poorest-countries-how-much-is-at-stake-462eabd8\/\">debt standstill<\/a>.\u201d Agreed by the G20 in April, the debt service suspension initiative has struggled to make an impact, with less than 60% of eligible countries showing interest and a failure by the private sector to participate.<\/p><p><strong>AND THE REST OF THE WORLD- <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Facebook says goodbye to its biggest advertiser after Disney joins ad boycott.<\/strong> Disney has taken an axe to its advertising spending on Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/disney-slashed-ad-spending-on-facebook-amid-growing-boycott-11595101729?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports, citing people familiar with the matter. Disney was Facebook\u2019s largest advertiser for the first six months of the year, making its decision a particularly large setback for the social media giant. Some of the world\u2019s largest companies \u2014 including Coca-Cola, Ford, Unilever and Starbucks \u2014 responded to calls for a boycott of Facebook earlier this month over its policies for USD 6.1 bn in loans and other financing from Afreximbank, European Investment Bank.<\/strong> The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has earmarked USD 3.9 bn for Egypt to mitigate covid-19 fallout and stimulate trade with the rest of the continent. Afreximbank has disbursed USD 3.55 bn to Egypt\u2019s banking sector under its Pandemic Trade Impact Mitigation Facility (Patifma), the regional lender said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afreximbank.com\/egypt-afreximbank-disburses-3-55bn-to-cushion-impact-of-covid-19-300m-to-stimulate-intra-african-trade\/\">a statement<\/a>. Afreximbank has also signed off on a further USD 300 mn to the National Bank of Egypt to encourage intra-African trade, as well as a USD 250k grant to the government to support covid-19 relief efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proceeds provided to banks under Patifma will help shore up the sector\u2019s FX liquidity.<\/strong> Credit facilities under this program aim to prevent disruptions in trade and avert defaults, Afreximbank President Benedict Oramah said. \u201cEgypt has been a regional banking powerhouse for more than a century and will play a vital role in expanding intra-Africa trade as the continent recovers from the pandemic and reaps the benefits of the African Continental FreeTrade Area,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Separately, we\u2019re getting EUR 1.9 bn from the European Investment Bank<\/strong> (EIB), which signed off last week on a combined EUR 1.9 bn in new financing, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/press\/all\/2020-197-eib-approves-eur-16-6-billion-for-covid-19-health-response-and-economic-resilience-climate-clean-transport-energy-and-housing.htm\">a statement<\/a>. The funding includes EUR 800 mn for \u201ccovid-19 related business investment\u201d and another EUR 1.1 bn for public transport infrastructure development across the country, the statement says.
