Maybe \u201chindsight is 20\/20\u201d was meant as some kind of cryptic warning from the future?<\/p><p><strong>The big news of the day?<\/strong> The World Health Organization is warning that the pandemic is speeding up globally and that <strong>\u201cthe worst yet to come\u201d<\/strong> (details below).<\/p><p><strong>Some thoughts as we prepare to kick off the second half of the year <\/strong>\u2014 and the state\u2019s new fiscal year:<\/p><p><strong>Regularly scheduled commercial flights to and from Egypt resume tomorrow <\/strong>with EgyptAir flying to 22 destinations. You can find details on the flights and how to confirm your bookings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egyptair.com\/en\/about-egyptair\/news-and-press\/Pages\/EGYPTAIR%20is%20back%20to%20the%20Sky%20as%20of%2001July%202020.aspx\">here<\/a>. The national flag carrier aims to add seven more destinations by mid-July. <strong>EgyptAir is offering 20% breaks on flights to and from Europe<\/strong>, the company told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2NCiw0u\">the domestic press<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>EgyptAir\u2019s most-booked destinations so far? <\/strong>Paris, New York and London.<\/p><p><strong>The 2020-2021 budget is on President Abdel Fattah El Sisi\u2019s desk for signature. <\/strong>It goes into effect tomorrow if it is signed today. If not, the current budget resets and guides spending and revenue priorities from tomorrow until a new one is passed.<\/p><p><strong>Your wage tax bill could soon get a little bit more expensive: <\/strong>The state\u2019s coffers will benefit in the new fiscal year from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6e8865f7-5cd2-4c12-9ce9-ed5dcdbd6d18\">a 1% surtax on all salaries<\/a> for coming fiscal year to help fight covid-19. The surtax is also yet to pass in the House.<\/p><p><strong>Electricity bills are going up by some 16-30% for residential consumers starting <\/strong><strong>tomorrow <\/strong>in the government\u2019s final phase out of electric subsidies for the highest consumption brackets. The full phase-out of subsidies will now take place in 2025.<\/p><p><strong>University exams start tomorrow<\/strong> and the 2019-2020 academic year has been <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YWrfQA\">extended to 15<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YWrfQA&amp;usg=AOvVaw0-donYIgINfNZK-Af0xOU_\">September<\/a> (rather than 31 July) as a result.<\/p><p><strong>A ray of sunshine: China said this morning that factory activity expanded in June <\/strong>as the official purchasing manager\u2019s index showing both supply and demand picking up.<\/p><p><strong>Asian markets are up <\/strong>in early trading this morning as a result. Futures suggest markets in Europe, the US and Canada will follow suit.<\/p><p><strong>Key news triggers coming up in July<\/strong>:<\/p><ul>\n<li><strong>PMI:<\/strong> The purchasing managers\u2019 index for June is due on 6 July. The contraction in Egypt\u2019s non-oil private sector was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01aa96e1-9ef6-430b-93ef-9e3d81050632\">slightly less catastrophic last month<\/a>, recovering somewhat from the all-time lows seen in April \u2014 the first full month under lockdown restrictions. Expect the contraction to have eased further this month as the government started to unwind the lockdown.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foreign reserves:<\/strong> Foreign reserves figures for June should be out sometime next week. Reserves have fallen by almost USD 10 bn over the past three months to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c885a8d1-9772-4b40-b60d-b789bc0d7a53\">USD 36 bn<\/a> as the central bank stepped up purchases of strategic goods and covered debt payments during the height of the covid-19 crisis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inflation:<\/strong> Inflation data for June will land Thursday, 9 June. Price growth slowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8e44c93f-4611-4914-bf37-a9990128b4df\">six-month lows of 4.7% in May<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>Is an announcement on new EBRD funding for Egypt\u2019s tourism industry <\/strong><strong>imminent?<\/strong> International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2VtuGgu\">held talks yesterday<\/a> with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a few days after <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fb68037d-dced-4d3a-b205-7eed84f01247\">the bank announced<\/a> that Egypt could be in line for an unspecified amount of emergency funding to rescue its tourism sector.<\/p><p><strong>MORNING READ- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/29\/technology\/working-from-home-failure.html\">The long, unhappy history of working from home<\/a><\/strong> in the New York Times. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 66,754 confirmed cases of covid-19, after the ministry reported 1,566 new infections yesterday. We now have a total of 17,951 confirmed cases that have fully recovered.<\/p><p><strong>At least seven covid-19 patients died in a fire at the isolation ward of Badrawy Hospital <\/strong><strong>in Alexandria<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/2433403.aspx&amp;usg=AOvVaw3A-mgnU_U3gHvh-bogaLQW\">Ahram Gate<\/a>. Another nine patients were injured in the fire. Public Prosecutor Hamada El Sawy has ordered an investigation into the incident, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1992886\">Al Masry Al Youm<\/a>.<\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-08\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Nurseries will be operating at 50% capacity and all staff will be required to wear masks <\/strong>as part of the Social Solidarity Ministry\u2019s guidelines for nurseries looking to reopen their doors next week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/389wDUK\">a ministry statement<\/a>. Parents and outside visitors will be barred from entry. Other provisions: regular fever testing, maintaining an on-site isolation unit and a trained infection control officer. Social Solidarity Minister Nivine Kabbag yesterday told ExtraNews that nurseries will be allowed to operate four days a week \u2014 from Sunday through Wednesday \u2014 but will have to close their doors each day at 3pm rather than 5pm (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TVf31LDWAso&amp;usg=AOvVaw22NLeLxef5z5KoTCEGI2Hh\">watch, runtime: 12:41<\/a>).<\/p><p><strong>It\u2019s unclear whether travellers from Egypt will be freely allowed into the UAE: <\/strong>The UAE will classify countries into three categories as air travel is set to resume. Green countries will be allowed freely into the UAE, yellow countries will have to take certain measures before entering, while red countries will be restricted from entry, Consulate General of Egypt in Dubai Younan Edward explained, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YIb3n5\">Al Mal<\/a>. Edward added that the official announcement is still to be made and that Egypt has not yet been classified.<\/p><p><strong>Cairo Airport is installing 40 thermal cameras<\/strong> at a cost of EGP 7 mn, Chairman Mohamed Mahrous said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Vtb2kN\">Al Mal<\/a>. The airport\u2019s arrival halls will be fitted with the cameras by tomorrow, in time for the resumption of flights.<\/p><p><strong>Covid continues to spread among the nation\u2019s footballers ahead of league restart:<\/strong> Nineteen professional football players have now tested positive for covid-19, a source in the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Vt9UOq\">FilGoal<\/a>. The source added that the cases are distributed among eight clubs, but all are stable. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dcefeb8c-dfce-4a69-a3a6-6f48f6f5c240\">Zamalek FC said<\/a> last week that it would opt out of this season\u2019s Egyptian Premier League after the EFA reported <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7778452a-64dd-4588-b63b-01723164f4ac\">six new cases<\/a> among players<\/p><p><strong>CIB saw e-banking transactions double and smart wallet subscribers increase by 12%<\/strong> during March and April, compared to the first two months of 2020, CIB Chief Digital Officer Mohamed Farag told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/38c0dJ7\">Masrawy<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>The Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC) will resume importing petroleum <\/strong><strong>and diesel<\/strong> in anticipation of an uptick in demand following the relaxation of lockdown measures, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2BLCeoa\">Al Mal<\/a>. We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives, but the hard reality is that this is not even close to being over.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Some politicians in the United States are getting the message:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/29\/nyregion\/Coronavirus-restaurants-reopening-ny-nj.html\">New York and New Jersey<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/29\/nyregion\/Coronavirus-restaurants-reopening-ny-nj.html&amp;usg=AOvVaw11jS5jhz-VDGw0puNT8Bb1\">are reconsidering<\/a> the pace at which they\u2019re re-opening. Wirecard\u2019s founder and former CEO Markus Braun was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/41871ab0-5e0f-41d2-9f4d-3a8a7ae06ad7\">arrested last week<\/a> after admitting that EUR 1.9 bn of cash reported on its balance sheet likely \u201cdoes not exist.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Brazil bans WhatsApp mobile payments:<\/strong> The Brazilian central bank and competition watchdog has suspended WhatsApp\u2019s payments feature because of its concentrated share of the country\u2019s e-payments market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/amp\/news\/articles\/2020-06-23\/brazil-s-central-bank-suspends-whatsapp-payments\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. The central bank has banned Mastercard and Visa from partnering with the Facebook product for payments and transfers and the regulator has ordered it to suspend its partnership with e-payment giant The suspension will remain in place until further notice, Tawfik told the business information service. Tawfik had said <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/41c60870-8910-4665-a812-f5925bce52c8\">in March<\/a> that the program was suspended thanks to pandemic-induced market turmoil, but a government official had signaled at the time that the government could come back with a new plan for the program come May.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the program isn\u2019t being taken off life support:<\/strong> The pandemic upended global markets, but Mohamed Ebied, co-CEO for the investment bank at EFG Hermes, said <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/493e0457-82af-4b27-9c7f-1ab2d8301a49\">last week<\/a> that it is possible that the program could resume in 4Q2020 or 1Q2021. The timing remains hard to predict due to the drop in corporate valuations and volatile conditions just about everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A quick recap of the program:<\/strong> The state privatization program ran headlong into global market turmoil since it was announced in 2018 and has seen transactions postponed multiple times. It was due to include both <strong>stake sales by already-listed companies and fresh IPOs. <\/strong> Out of the two dozen companies slated to IPO or offer secondary stakes, only a single offering has materialized: Eastern Tobacco\u2019s 4.5% secondary offering in March last year. Banque du Caire had planned to debut 20-30% of its shares on the EGX <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/40690e96-1782-465c-b1ae-4e96bd528bea\">in April<\/a> but shelved plans due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. State-owned e-payments firm E-Finance also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bca51511-55be-4032-89ae-78ad3af8fa92\">pushed its IPO date<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/25a86c08-8354-44e6-abcd-798ea55d073b\">final quarter of 2020<\/a>.
