Egypt has now disclosed a total of 53,758 confirmed cases of covid-19, after the ministry reported <strong>1,547 new infections yesterday<\/strong>. We now have a total of 15,779 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 14,327 have fully recovered.<\/p><p>The number of new cases <strong>hit a record high on Friday<\/strong> as the ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37KQFEN\">reported<\/a> 1,774 new infections.<\/p><p><strong>The Health Ministry has new authority to enforce the mandatory wearing of face masks in <\/strong><strong>public:<\/strong> The House of Representatives\u2019 general assembly approved on Wednesday amendments to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01f8af18-ba6f-485d-a1ce-f608f149eb59\">the Infectious Diseases Act<\/a> that give the Health Ministry the authority to require citizens to wear face masks or other protective gear in public spaces. The changes also give the ministry a mandate to set procedures for the burial of victims of any infectious diseases, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ALaO1C\">Youm7<\/a>. The fine for not wearing a mask ranges from EGP 300-5k, while the fine for not complying with burial safety measures is EGP 5k-10k, or more if violence is involved.<\/p><p><strong>Prepare to arrive at the airport 4.5 hours ahead of your next international flight:<\/strong> EgyptAir has advised travelers boarding international flights to arrive at the airport 4.5 hours ahead of time, while those boarding domestic flights are advised to arrive 2.5 hours before departure. The national flag carrier also said that airports will be disinfected every three hours once flights resume <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/33b84d16-6860-471b-a8ae-0a636614a86e\">on 1 July<\/a>. All airport and flight crew will be wearing protective gear, face masks are required at all times inside of the airport, and only travellers are allowed inside terminals (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/30ZJNSv\">watch, runtime: 01:52<\/a>).<\/p><p><strong>Inbound tourists will now need to have valid medical insurance before arriving in Egypt<\/strong> under new Tourism Ministry regulations, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/06\/18\/1359034\">the local press<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>The World Travel and Tourism Council <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wttc.org\/News-Article\/Egypt_Slovenia_Ukraine_and_other_major_destinations_get_the_WTTC_Safe_Travels_stamp\">has designated<\/a><\/strong><strong> Egypt a safe and hygienic travel <\/strong><strong>destination<\/strong> following its review of the country\u2019s health and hygiene protocols as Egypt gears up to welcome tourists back to the Red Sea, Matrouh, and South Sinai next month, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3do4RVf\">a cabinet statement<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Italian and Ukrainian tourists are eager to return to Egypt<\/strong>, Moataz Sedky, a member of the Egyptian Travel Agents Association and the general manager of Travco Holidays, told Extra News (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a61DYzzELGk\">watch, runtime: 05:49<\/a>).<\/p><p><strong>The Trade and Industry Ministry has extended an export ban on <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fJf1Se\">surgical masks<\/a><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dkhyAv\">rubbing alcohol<\/a><\/strong> for three months. The export bans were first put into place in March to ensure there is enough supply to meet local demand during the outbreak.<\/p><p><strong>Information Minister Osama Heikal is self-isolating at home after coming in contact with a <\/strong><strong>covid-19 case<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2UXj45p\">according to Youm7<\/a>. Last week, Housing Minister Assem El Gazzar also began self-isolating for the same reason.<\/p><p><strong>MP proposes offering low-interest EGP-denominated bonds to support those impacted <\/strong><strong>by the outbreak<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hKaVeh\">Al-Mal<\/a>. The house economic committee member proposed that a fund be set up to back the bond offering to help produce an additional revenue stream for people unable to work while Egypt is still in the throes of the pandemic.<\/p><p><strong>The government has launched an employment initiative for returnees <\/strong>dubbed \u201cNawart Baladak\u201d (You Light Up Your Home), according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/6\/Nawart-baladak.pdf\">a Planning Ministry statement (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"https:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/6\/SOMA-ENTERPRISE-3-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\"><\/a>\"Work, engage and communicate in an environment inspired by tranquility promoting productivity, clarity, and peace of mind.\"<\/p><p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>We are entering a \u201cnew and dangerous phase\u201d in the pandemic<\/strong> as record-high cases swept the Americas and the virus\u2019 spread accelerated in the Middle East and South Asia, the WHO boss Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/who-world-coronavirus-pandemic-new-and-dangerous-phase-2020-6\">said<\/a> over the weekend.<\/p><p><strong>Saudi Arabia is <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-53123945\">lifting its curfew<\/a><\/strong><strong> and allowing the resumption of all commercial activities<\/strong>, but is leaving in place the suspension of international flights and umrah for the moment. The kingdom is yet to make an announcement about whether this year\u2019s hajj will go ahead.<\/p><p><strong>EGYPT BEYOND COVID- <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Individual taxpayers will have to file their taxes electronically as of January 2021<\/strong>, according to a Finance Ministry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mof.gov.eg\/Arabic\/MOFNews\/Press\/Pages\/news17-6-2020.aspx\">decree<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/06\/09\/companies-will-need-to-file-their-taxes-online-from-2020\/\">recent amendment<\/a> to the Income Tax Act made it mandatory for companies to file their tax returns online <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bfa2470d-ab5e-4af9-93a8-1939431e1491\">this year<\/a>. Individuals will follow suit starting 1 January 2021. Most Egyptians and foreign residents pay taxes through payroll taxes deducted at source; individuals who file themselves are self-employed professionals including lawyers, doctors and consultants as well as people who generate income through part-time work outside their day job or folks with income from assets including real estate rents.<\/p><p><strong>AND THE REST OF THE WORLD- <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>It\u2019s shaping up to be another nutty week in America<\/strong>, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/20\/world\/coronavirus-updates.html?\">covid-19 cases spiked<\/a> to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/20\/us-reports-his-number-of-daily-coronavirus-cases-since-may-1.html\">highest level<\/a> since 1 May and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/20\/us\/politics\/tulsa-trump-rally.html\">smaller-than-expected crowd showed<\/a> up in Tulsa for the first rally of the pandemic by King Cheeto. Nine out of the 10 analysts and economists surveyed expect the central bank to leave rates where they are for the third straight meeting after making an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f2e78eb3-6978-4eb5-a04f-a3b7247293ed\">historic 300-bps rate cut<\/a> in response to the covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do rates stand currently?<\/strong> The CBE\u2019s overnight deposit rate is at 9.25% and the lending rate is at 10.25%. The main operation and discount rates are both at 9.75%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The central bank\u2019s main mission right now is to use rates to support the EGP<\/strong> lest we start importing inflation, several analysts say. \u201cWe expect the CBE to hold its policy rates at the upcoming meeting because of the limited effect of any further rate cut and the need to keep the real yield on domestic debt instruments lucrative enough to compensate for the expected EGP depreciation,\u201d said Mona Bedeir, senior economist at Prime Holding. Ahmed Hafez, head of MENA research at Renaissance Capital, also pointed out the currency easing and said that the central bank will not want to turn off foreign investors with lower yields just as they\u2019re starting to return to EGP-denominated bonds after three months of heavy outflows thanks to covid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The currency has been proving more flexible<\/strong> in recent weeks, easing almost 3% over the past month to EGP 16.11 to the greenback at the end of last week. The consensus among analysts seems to be that the trend will continue, but how far remains the subject of debate. Radwa El Swaify, head of research at Pharos, sees the EGP averaging 16.50 against the greenback during 2020, at the low end of the range mooted by global investment banks, which in recent days <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4a6012f3-030a-4f4c-88f5-b123e955f9a4\">have forecast<\/a> the currency to stand anywhere between 16.50-17.50 by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depreciation of the EGP and the impact of covid will push up prices in the months ahead: <\/strong>Despite inflation falling to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8e44c93f-4611-4914-bf37-a9990128b4df\">six-month lows in May<\/a>, the central bank will hold off on making an additional rate cut this month, mindful of the potential for price growth to accelerate in the months ahead, several analysts said. \u201cCurrent price levels also reflect lower demand compared to relatively higher consumption levels during the month of Ramadan. Going forward, we remain cautious as recent EGP devaluation of around 3% in addition to possible supply disruptions resulting from lower international trade could lead to some price increases,\u201d said Monette Doss, chief economist at HC Securities. \u201cWe expect inflation to average 8.4% over the remaining months of 2020, well within the CBE\u2019s target of 9% (+\/- 3%) for 4Q2020.\u201c <strong>El Swaify sees inflation rising from 4.7% currently to 7-7.5% by the end of the year. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What will the CBE do next?<\/strong> Analysts are divided on how the central bank will act during the remaining months of the year. While El Swaify and Bedeir have both called an end to the easing cycle this year, others are maintaining a dovish outlook going forward. Capital Economics sees another 225 bps of cuts between now and December, bringing the overnight deposit rate down to 7%. \u201cSubdued\u201d inflation and expectations for further funding from the IMF will make the environment more conducive or further easing, MENA economist James Swanston said.
