The sound made even the non-travelers among us all very happy.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>We set a new single-day record yesterday for deaths and infections<\/strong>, capping a three-day run of covid news in which the Madbouly government suggested some flights may resume in July. Meanwhile, curfew is now an hour shorter, running 8pm-4am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look for covid and the House of Representatives to dominate the news agenda here at<\/strong> <strong>home this week. <\/strong>Lawmakers are <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fn5JuG\">due to debate<\/a> the nation\u2019s draft FY2020-2021 budget and the bill that will establish the Senate as a reconstituted upper house of parliament.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up for a final vote this week:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/628a9e60-3aad-4b58-9f57-ad0747b79588\">draft Central Depository Act<\/a>, amendments to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a1800a0e-2b5f-4e61-b9b0-47dcd587a593\">Railway<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a1800a0e-2b5f-4e61-b9b0-47dcd587a593\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a1800a0e-2b5f-4e61-b9b0-47dcd587a593\">Act<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01f8af18-ba6f-485d-a1ce-f608f149eb59\">Infectious Diseases Act<\/a>, and the Police Authority Act, as well as a bill regulating parking lots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re heading to the polls once more this year<\/strong> to elect members to the Senate and the House of Representatives, most likely in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/08\/parliamentary-elections-to-be-held-at-the-end-of-2020\/\">November or December<\/a> after the latter convenes again for its final session. That said, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/372024\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egypt-to-hold-Senate-elections-in-August-Report.aspx\">Ahram Online<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairo24.com\/2020\/06\/12\/%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%B1%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%84%D9%80%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A9-24-%D8%A7%D8%AA%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%87-%D9%84%D8%A5%D8%AC%D8%B1\/\">Cairo 24<\/a> suggest we may be voting for the Senate in August, citing what they said was a report by state-owned Akhbar Al Youm. No other media outlets have picked up the news and we weren\u2019t able to track down the piece in Akhbar, so take that with a grain of salt for the moment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the global front: We suspect we\u2019ll be seeing plenty of hand-wringing this week about<\/strong> <strong>whether financial markets are in tune with economic reality. <\/strong>US shares suffered on Thursday their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stock-markets-dow-update-6-11-2020-11591853228\">worst one-day slump in three months<\/a>, with the Dow off nearly 7% and the S&P down just about 6%. Oil also took it on the chin as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/11\/business\/market-drop-coronavirus.html?referringSource=articleShare\">\u201cat least for a day, reality triumphed over hope on Wall Street.\u201d<\/a> Equities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stock-markets-dow-update-6-12-2020-11591937954?mod=markets_lead_pos1\">clawed back<\/a> a bit of ground on Friday, but still finished in the red for the week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the Department of the Obvious: <\/strong>\u201cThe idea that Covid is fully behind us, or that a V-shaped recovery is in front of us, were put on hold\u201d on Thursday, one analyst told the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What next? <\/strong>Concerns on both sides of the Atlantic. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 42,980 confirmed cases of covid-19, after the ministry reported 1,677 new infections yesterday (and 1,577 new cases on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2MUb7tg\">Friday<\/a>). We now have a total of 12,919 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 11,529 have fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two more doctors pass away from covid-19: <\/strong>Deputy Director of the National Heart Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2YAvHo5\">Yousry Kamel<\/a> and gynecologist <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2UFny0o\">Adel Abdul Azim<\/a> passed away over the weekend from covid-19. The flights will run on 14, 18, 19 and 21 June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sudan has partially reopened its land border for trade with Egypt, after closing in March <\/strong><strong>to stem <\/strong><strong>the spread of covid-19,<\/strong> according to Sudan\u2019s state news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/suna-sd.net\/ar\/single?id=671978\">SUNA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DONATIONS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Orascom Construction has funded and built a new emergency reception unit <\/strong>for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Kasr El Eini hospital, the company announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/6\/Orascom-Construction-Donates-a-New-Emergency-Reception-Unit-for-the-Obstetrics-and-Gynecology-Department-at-Kasr-El-Eini-Hospital.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a> on Thursday. discussion on last night\u2019s talk shows. We have the full story in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Irrigation Ministry spokesman Mohamed El Sebai recapped the main points of contention<\/strong> between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia over the dam, telling Al Kahera Alaan\u2019s Lamees El Hadidi that Ethiopia is trying to reverse years of negotiations to get the upper hand. El Sebai noted that the three countries will meet again tomorrow, but signaled that Addis Ababa has not shown a great degree of flexibility in this round of talks, suggesting that we\u2019re heading towards another standstill (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ccu6KwDgKjU\">watch, runtime: 15:00<\/a>). El Sebai had a similar chat with Masaa DMC\u2019s Eman El Hosary (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hp9OhJ9qRdI\">watch, runtime 11:24<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ew2ebRBYTfA\">runtime: 9:10<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re going to get more clarity on the government\u2019s plans to resume air travel today<\/strong>, when the civil aviation and tourism ministers will hold a press conference to announce the procedures that will be in place to reopen their industries, Information Minister Osama Heikal told Lamees. Heikal also filled Lamees in on the government\u2019s plans for the next two weeks, including the lockdown measures that will remain in place (which we have in detail in Speed Round, below) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xmbd0BgYdFY\">watch, runtime: 19:31<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism is unlikely to spring back to life immediately, but there are positive signs that the industry won\u2019t be battered for long<\/strong>, head of the Arab Guides Union\u2019s eco-tourism committee Tarek Sarhan said on TenTV. According to Sarhan, tourist bookings have mostly been pushed to October, rather than being canceled altogether, suggesting that demand is simply delayed and not lost (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PpUk2ffFrVs\">watch, runtime 21:13<\/a>). We\u2019re not holding our breath, but we hope Sarhan is right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Belgian charter flight coming to the Red Sea this month?<\/strong> A flight carrying Belgian tourists will arrive in the Red Sea on 26 June, governor Amr Hanafi told Al Tase\u2019a Masa\u2019an\u2019s Wael El-Ibrashy. The resumption is not a certainty, and will only be confirmed at the end of June. <strong>Look for charter flights to go first <\/strong>before regularly commercial routes resume, we suspect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Houses of worship may partially reopen next month, too<\/strong>, as the Madbouly government\u2019s covid-19 crisis management committee will weigh whether to allow the faithful to go back to mosques and churches in governorates and select areas with low rates of infection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The nighttime curfew is now one hour shorter<\/strong>, running 8pm-4am as of today, according to a separate Cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Yt44ND\">statement<\/a>. Factory workers and trucks carrying petroleum products or commercial goods will continue to be exempt from the curfew. <strong>No public transport will run during curfew hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other measures in place until the end of June:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Citizen-facing government services<\/strong> that have yet to resume will continue to be suspended;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grocery stores, bakeries, and pharmacies will continue to operate around the clock<\/strong>, with the exception of those inside malls, which will be allowed to operate between 6am and 6pm;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restaurants and cafes will remain closed<\/strong> until the end of the month, as will entertainment venues and public parks and beaches. Food outlets can still offer takeaway services outside of curfew hours, and deliver around the clock;<\/li>\n<li><strong>On-site learning at schools and universities will remain suspended<\/strong> until the end of the month (at which point the academic year will be over);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thanaweya Amma exams will be held on 21 June<\/strong> with precautionary measures as was previously
