And closer to home, <strong>Saudi grocer BinDawood <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-08\/saudi-grocer-is-set-to-kick-off-first-mideast-ipo-since-virus?sref=mmeFTDW1\">says it will go public<\/a><\/strong> in the region\u2019s first IPO since covid-19 hit.<\/p><p><strong>#2- Will Hong Kong\u2019s woes be good for Dubai?<\/strong> \u201cThe city\u2019s status as the premier Asian destination for industry talent is at stake\u201d as Beijing curbs Hong Kong\u2019s autonomy, and that has fund managers and traders looking to the exits, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2acb077f-9f81-4457-9932-5223334facee\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. That momentum could grow as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/hsbcs-decision-to-side-with-china-over-hong-kong-was-a-year-in-the-making-11591624786?mod=hp_lead_pos7\">HSBC takes heat<\/a> for having overtly backed Beijing\u2019s move to impose a new security law on HK. Expect Singapore to benefit from any relocation, but there\u2019s a play to be made here for Dubai, too.<\/p><p><strong>#3- When will we hug? <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/06\/08\/upshot\/when-epidemiologists-will-do-everyday-things-coronavirus.html\">The New York Times has an answer<\/a>, having asked \u201c511 epidemiologists when they expect to fly, hug, and do 18 other everyday activities again.\u201d<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>GERD talks resume today:<\/strong> Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan\u2019s irrigation ministers will hold a virtual meeting today to resume negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XJtreF\">statement<\/a> from Sudan\u2019s irrigation ministry, which arranged the meeting. Observers from the US, South Africa, and European Union Commission will also sit in on the discussions, which will focus on \u201cprocedural issues related to the role of observers and outstanding negotiating issues,\u201d the statement says.<\/p><p><strong>We\u2019ll know more about July\u2019s electricity price hikes later today <\/strong>when Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker holds a press conference to announce new electricity rates set to take hold on 1 July, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cKtSJY\">Al Masry Al Youm<\/a>. We have more in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p><p><strong>The IMF\u2019s executive board will discuss by the end of this month or early July a <\/strong><strong>USD 5.2 <\/strong><strong>bn stand-by facility for Egypt<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XHUnLR\">Masrawy<\/a> writes, citing an unnamed Finance Ministry official.<\/p><p><strong>EGP WATCH- The EGP<\/strong> <strong>gained nearly three piasters against the greenback <\/strong><strong>yesterday<\/strong>, rebounding slightly after having returned to where it was seven months ago earlier in the week.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>COVID-19 IN EGYPT-<\/strong><\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>The Health Ministry <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2UquQVx\">confirmed<\/a><\/strong><strong> 34 new deaths from covid-19 yesterday<\/strong>, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 1,271. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 35,444 confirmed cases of covid-19, after the ministry reported <strong>1,365 new infections yesterday<\/strong>. We now have a total of 10,618 confirmed cases that have since tested negative for the virus after being hospitalized or isolated, of whom 9,375 have fully recovered.<\/p><p><strong>The ministry is providing at-home treatment and medical care to some 9k people <\/strong><strong>suspected to have<\/strong><strong> contracted the virus<\/strong> to avoid crowding at hospitals, a senior ministry official said yesterday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TMlzDZfqYCE\">watch, runtime: 7:03<\/a>).<\/p><p><strong>Amid the pandemic, we\u2019re doing everything online: <\/strong>Fawry has seen a 250% increase in payment volumes since the beginning of the pandemic and is now serving more than 25 mn customers per month, CEO Ashraf Sabry told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2UiuoIU\">the local press<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Sister companies Uber and Careem have indefinitely suspended recruiting new<\/strong><strong> drivers<\/strong> as demand has nosedived during the pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37bh66l\">Al Mal<\/a> reports, citing an unnamed insider.<\/p><p><strong>The Musicians Syndicate is pushing to get entertainment venues reopened at<\/strong><strong> reduced capacities<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XK7E6X\">Masrawy<\/a>. A total of 136k new cases were reported globally on Sunday in the largest single-day increase the outbreak began.<\/p><p><strong>New Zealand now has zero covid-19 cases<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/9503e13b40d8815e107e9891da1bfdcb\">the Associated Press<\/a>. The country has gone 17 days since reporting a new case and all infected patients have recovered. NZ has fully reopened, but will leave in place border controls and quarantine requirements for new arrivals.<\/p><p><strong>Saudi Arabia looks set to dramatically limit the number of people who will be allowed to <\/strong><strong>perform the hajj this year<\/strong> as the kingdom\u2019s covid-19 case count topped 100k, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-saudi-haj-idUSKBN23F1VJ\">Reuters<\/a> reports. <\/p><p><strong>GLOBAL MACRO-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Global trade faces \u201cticking time-bomb\u201d as labor crisis threatens shipping companies:<\/strong> Shipping companies could refuse to sail later this month due to concerns over safety on merchant vessels, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4f2e33a6-e1f7-407f-b2af-8aac31e0d8ee\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. Long-term fiscal sustainability will remain a challenge for some, even under optimistic post-Covid-19 assumptions,\u201d the analysts wrote.<\/p><p><strong>Oil giant BP is planning to cut 10k jobs According to <strong>the World Bank\u2019s June 2020 Global Economic Prospects report<\/strong>, the growth Egypt will achieve in FY2019-2020 will be buoyed by \u201cgenerally supportive activity\u201d before the onset of the pandemic, which has since been disrupted. The economy will expand at a slower pace of 2.1% in FY2020-2021. The World Bank had previously expected 6.0% growth in Egypt next fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt and Djibouti are the only two MENA countries whose economies will not contract this fiscal year<\/strong>, and Egypt\u2019s forecasted growth this fiscal year is more than double Djibouti\u2019s 1.3%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The region\u2019s oil importers (including Egypt) are expected to fare better than oil exporters this year and next<\/strong>, but their economies remain reliant on tourism activity, leaving them vulnerable due to an anticipated drop in arrivals from key source areas, including Europe. The report also expects investments and exports to contract \u201camid weak global and domestic confidence and high policy uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uncertainty and volatility of oil prices is also a downside risk for the region as a whole, the report says.<\/strong> While lower oil prices initially provided importers with a bit of current account relief, high volatility is taking a toll on investment and confidence, and prices remaining low \u201cwould also further erode MENA\u2019s already weak fiscal space and heavily constrain investment activity in the region, as oil prices and public investment often comove closely in MENA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the medium term, staying the course on structural reforms to bump up investment<\/strong> is key for Egypt and the region at large. The report points to Egypt\u2019s economic reforms as being pro-growth and says financial sector reforms across the region will help improve the investment climate. \u201cBut success is contingent upon a sustained commitment to reforms, including by newly formed governments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The report sees emerging markets and developing economies turning in their weakest showing in 60 years this year<\/strong>, with a projected 2.5% contraction in 2020. \u201cThe current global recession is also unique in that global growth forecasts have been revised down more steeply and rapidly than in any other recessions since at least 1990.\u201d <strong>Emerging markets are expected to begin recovering in 2021<\/strong>, however, as trade and investment begin to firm up again and the effects of the pandemic begin to wane. Globally, the World Bank\u2019s baseline scenario sees <strong>\u201ca deep global recession\u201d in the cards for 2020<\/strong>, which would see global output contracting 5.2% \u2014 a decline nearly threefold that of 2009.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The global economy would be positioned for a recovery in 2021 if lockdown measures are lifted by the end of this year<\/strong> around the world, even if some social distancing practices remain in place. \u201cThat said, the envisioned global recovery next year is moderate, with the level of global output in 2021 still 5.9% below that of January forecasts.
