Malls and other commercial centers will still be permitted to operate from 6am-5pm and will be closed all day Friday and Saturday, as has already been the case for two weeks.<\/p><p><strong>The extension comes with a few changes:<\/strong><\/p><ul>\n<li>Curfew hours will begin one hour later, <strong>running from 8pm-6am<\/strong> to ease rush-hour congestion on public transportation;<\/li>\n<li>All restaurants will now be permitted to offer <strong>delivery services around the clock<\/strong>, but still can\u2019t open for table service. Restaurants were previously only allowed to deliver food outside of curfew hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>All government offices offering citizen-facing services other than health and security <\/strong><strong>remain suspended. <\/strong>This includes registry offices, notary services, and the issuance or renewal of passports, visas and work permits.<\/p><p>(<strong>And for those of you keeping track at home: <\/strong>23 April is either the first day of Ramadan or the day before Ramadan, by our math.)<\/p><p><strong>The Cairo metro has changed its schedule<\/strong> from today to match the new curfew hours, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MinistryTransportation\/posts\/1590491531107834\">according to a Transport Ministry statement<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>The House of Representatives will remain in recess until 29 April<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3b6E4gd\">Hapi Journal reports<\/a>. General assembly meetings were set to resume next Sunday, 12 April.<\/p><p><strong>The Egyptian Football Association also extended the suspension of matches<\/strong> and all other activities until the end of the month, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.efa.com.eg\/NewsDetails?k1=ZEYttknvzzyDXgSLzWHAew==\">according to a statement<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>EGX-listed companies have an extra month to report their 1Q financial results<\/strong> under a decision from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=18032020&amp;id=b3a0c8d3-b284-4808-bd60-fa07960f1aac\">Financial Regulatory Authority<\/a> that extends the filing deadline to 15 June. We now have a total of 439 cases that have tested negative for the virus after having first been confirmed as having the disease, of whom 305 have fully recovered.<\/p><p><strong>Several hospitals reported covid-19 infections among their staff members yesterday<\/strong>, including the Sudr Dikirnis Hospital in Dakahlia, where a total of 21 medical staff have now tested positive for the virus. The hospital is temporarily shutting down as of today to be disinfected, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=09042020&amp;id=d4c9466d-2d64-4973-a9df-d00b840a577c&amp;fbclid=IwAR1OV7_cpnmm7IaOZKrzT17Jncg9AmV66ABFOnQ-PZo5652Az9W9yE8Jne8\">according to Al Shorouk<\/a>. Beni Suef Specialized Hospital is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=08042020&amp;id=d19ab962-943e-48cf-8e3a-ce109c3fb31b\">also temporarily shutting down<\/a> after reporting two nurses and three admin staff tested positive, and <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/366904\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egyptian-heart-institute%E2%80%99s-admission-department-cl.aspx\">one nurse has been infected<\/a> at the National Heart Institute.<\/p><p><strong>The government is launching a mobile app to track cases and answer FAQs on covid-19.<\/strong> The new app is set to provide a direct line of communication between doctors and patients and will allow health officials to accurately track the spread of the virus through geo-location surveillance, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/News\/366870.aspx\">according to Ahram Online<\/a>. The application will soon be made available for Android and iOS.<\/p><p><strong>SMEs may be among the biggest casualties of covid-19 in Egypt<\/strong>, with many of them having two months or less of working capital on hand that will disappear if the current situation continues, head of the SME committee at the Egyptian Businessmen\u2019s Association Hassan El Shafei <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/mena\/en\/economy\/story\/As_COVID19_sweeps_through_Egypt_SMEs_could_be_its_biggest_casualty-ZAWYA20200408071227\/\">tells Zawya<\/a>. El Shafei is calling for more stimulus measures to support SMEs including tax exemptions and subsidized loans to pay salaries and operational costs.<\/p><p><strong>No, Egypt doesn\u2019t have a vaccine that the rest of the world doesn\u2019t:<\/strong> Health Ministry spokesperson Khaled Megahed dismissed rumors that Egypt has a \u201csecret\u201d covid-19 vaccine and the ministry has yet to authorize the production of any type of meds for the virus, .<\/p><p><strong>The <\/strong><strong>Higher<\/strong><strong> Education Ministry has trained 15k med students<\/strong> to go on staff at hospitals, spokesperson Mohamed El Tayeb said (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E04u41wh2a0\">watch, runtime: 3:33<\/a>).<\/p><p><strong>WFH and online learning have spurred a 30% increase in sales of new and used <\/strong><strong>computers<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/04\/08\/1317758\">according to the local press<\/a>. Meanwhile, Asian markets are mixed: Japan is in the red, while shares in China, Hong Kong and South Korea are all up less than 1% as we head toward dispatch time.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>ON THE GLOBAL FRONT-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Global infections surpasses 1.5 mn, US reports highest daily death toll:<\/strong> There are now more than 1.5 mn confirmed cases of covid-19 infections globally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-approaches-400-000-coronavirus-infections-11586340727?mod=hp_lead_pos2\">the Wall Street Journal reports<\/a>. The total number of infections in the US has surpassed 430k as the country reported a record-high 1,973 deaths yesterday.<\/p><p><strong>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is \u201cresponding to treatment\u201d for his covid-19 <\/strong><strong>infection<\/strong>, but remains in ICU, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/08\/uk\/boris-johnson-coronavirus-wednesday-uk-gbr-intl\/index.html\">CNN reports<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>EIB, AfDB roll out bns for support packages:<\/strong> The European Investment Bank will contribute EUR 5.2 bn to help 100 non-EU nations strengthen their health infrastructure and accelerate support for private sector investment, <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/4\/b20_96.en_.pdf\">according to a statement (pdf)<\/a>. The statement does not indicate whether Egypt will be eligible for a piece of this funding. The African Development Bank is launching a USD 10 bn response facility to help member countries fast-track their measures to contain the spread of the virus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afdb.org\/en\/news-and-events\/press-releases\/african-development-bank-group-unveils-10-billion-response-facility-curb-covid-19-35174\">it said.<\/a> The facility includes USD 5.5 bn earmarked for sovereign operations in bank members, USD 3.1 bn for sovereign and regional operations, and USD 1.35 bn to private sector operations.<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWobbly\u201d US response threatens to make recession worse -Reuters: <\/strong>US efforts to support the economy through covid-19 is being hampered by technical glitches, bureaucracy, and the \u201cmuddled\u201d response by the federal government, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-usa-fiscal-analysi\/wobbly-u-s-fiscal-response-could-deepen-coronavirus-recession-idUSKBN21Q0H1\">says Reuters<\/a>. Despite passing the historic USD 2.3 tn economic stimulus package last month, businesses are still in the dark about when they can access loans, families are yet to see any direct payments, states are unable to process unemployment benefits amid a surge in new claims, and banks are not prepared for the government\u2019s USD 350 bn lending program to support small businesses.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>Another day, another beyond-dismal data dump:<\/strong> The day\u2019s eye-watering figures are brought to us by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which kindly informed us that leading indicators in pretty much all major economies saw the biggest monthly drop on record in March. All countries are experiencing a \u201csharp slowdown\u201d apart from India which is merely going through a \u201cslowdown,\u201d the OECD said. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/sdd\/leading-indicators\/composite-leading-indicators-cli-oecd-04-2020.pdf\">Read it and weep (pdf)<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The Bank of France has estimated that the French economy shrank by 6% in 1Q<\/strong><strong>2020,<\/strong> its biggest contraction since WWII, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-08\/french-economy-shrinks-most-since-ww-ii-central-bank-estimates?srnd=premium-europe&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>And Germany\u2019s economic output is set to plunge by 9.8% in the second quarter<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/economic-researchers-see-germany-head-toward-deep-recession\/a-53057069\">five of<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/economic-researchers-see-germany-head-toward-deep-recession\/a-53057069\">the country\u2019s leading economic research institutes have said<\/a>. This would be the sharpest quarterly drop since records began in 1970, setting up the economy to contract 4% during the course of 2020.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>Emerging markets are really looking like a bargain right now<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>The pandemic has pushed the MSCI emerging markets index\u2019s cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio to a 65% discount against the ratio for US equities, according to the Institute of International Finance (IIF). EM equities now have a CAPE ratio of 7.8x, which is below financial crisis levels and pales in comparison to the US\u2019 22.6, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8b12a663-3235-4bcc-8cfc-6f1bf16470ee\">says the Financial Times<\/a>. The IIF cites sharp portfolio outflows and deep EM corporate debt as drivers for the low valuation. TMG subsidiary the Arab Company for Projects and Urban Development will sell the shariah-compliant bonds via private subscription and will list them on the stock exchange to be publicly traded by investors. TMG announced plans <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/072adee9-35c4-4630-8009-27797e16674e\">earlier this year<\/a> to launch a three-year EGP 4.5-5 bn sukuk program in April to finance the company\u2019s real estate leasing projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the issuance:<\/strong> The sukuk carry a 57-month tenor, maturing at the end of 2024, and each bond will have a nominal value of EGP 100. Payment for the bonds will be expedited during trading but they will not be transferable into shares, the FRA said. The underlying asset linked to the sukuk will be TMG's open-air mall in Madinaty, in which the investors will have partial ownership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The issuance is 2.5x oversubscribed already<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/04\/08\/1318283\">the local press<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FRA does about-face on sukuk regs, allowing TMG sukuk to go to the EGX:<\/strong> The sukuk regulations published last year allowed for sukuk to be sold only via private placements. Since the big banks were bailed out during the 2008 crisis, policymakers vowed not to do it again. Regulators instead imposed stricter capital requirements on banks, limiting their ability to engage in \u201cproprietary\u201d trading, or buying and selling equities and bonds using their own money to build up capital in the economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a result, the role of banks as market makers started to diminish,<\/strong> and they began looking up to brokers, who are particularly astute in their ability to make a quick buck. While this shift made banks less exposed, it was accelerated by digitization and algorithms and quickly transferred risk to the now liquidity-starved global financial markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Market watchers have previously warned:<\/strong> The shift in the role of banks from institutions that help others raise financial capital to mere intermediaries will amplify any post-2008 economic crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5b1cab62-4a55-11e8-8ee8-cae73aab7ccb\">says a 2018 piece<\/a> by Wigglesworth and FT banking editor Ben McLannahan. This is because frantic attempts to eliminate leverage from the economy<\/p>\n<p><strong>The situation may be described by future economists as a modern-day \u201ccobra effect,\u201d<\/strong> which is quite the anecdote for why well intentioned economic policies could have a few undesirable side effects, says Wigglesworth. The cobra effect was coined in a 2001 book by German economist Horst Siebert, which uses a story from British colonial rule in India. Back then, the ruling class in Delhi attempted to counter an outbreak of cobras by paying out cityfolk for every snake head they delivered. Speaking to us this week is our own Hadia Mostafa, managing partner of <a href=\"https:\/\/inktankir.com\/\">Enterprise\u2019s parent company, Inktank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m Hadia Mostafa, managing partner and co-founder of Inktank,<\/strong> the Egypt-based investor relations and strategic communications firm that provides services to more than 40 publicly traded and private companies in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain. Inktank is also the proud parent company of Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve been through curfews and economic downswings in the past, but covid-19 has brought a new set of drastic changes for everyone.<\/strong> Since starting Inktank in 2007, my business partner and I have seen the company through a global financial crisis in 2008, two revolutions in 2011 and 2013, and the devaluation of the EGP in 2016. But nothing could have prepared me for the situation we now find ourselves in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Within the span of one week<\/strong>, my son had moved to work from home (WFH) out of his bedroom, my husband was running a factory out of our living room, and my daughter was packing up her dorm room in Boston to catch one of the last flights back to Cairo. And I was at a tiny desk in my guest bedroom advising clients in four countries (which at the beginning was all about how to stay calm and well-informed), helping our staff juggle priorities, and working on my own deliverables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now in our fourth week of WFH, so far it\u2019s not about routine,<\/strong> but about coping with the loss of the very fast-paced routine that I had perfected and thrived on for years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The first and last thing that I do every day is check the news on my phone.<\/strong> My day in lockdown usually starts between 6:30 and 7:00am and ends somewhere around midnight. I\u2019ll start my morning reading Enterprise and in the evening it\u2019s usually a combination of the New York Times, <a href=\"https:\/\/crooked.com\/\">Crooked Media Podcasts<\/a> (to feed my US politics addiction) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/topics\/white-house\">White House Coronavirus press briefing on MSNBC<\/a>. I have coffee on my balcony before everyone else in the house wakes up, and I go through my emails and <a href=\"https:\/\/teamsdemo.office.com\/\">Teams messages<\/a> to try and get a sense of what the day ahead will be like.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the first two weeks of WFH, we were establishing a new system for the whole company.<\/strong> We had daily 8:45 am management committee conference calls and afternoon wrap-ups at 5:00 pm, which gave us a sense of connection and reassured us that all client and staff needs were being met. Recently, we\u2019ve found it more efficient to minimize the calls and communicate more in writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I don\u2019t know if there is such a thing as a typical day anymore, but all my days are still very client-focused.<\/strong> The day usually consists of juggling client deliverables that I am personally creating or supervising and talking both internally and with clients on how to mitigate risks to their businesses and weather the storm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Managing meals and household chores without outside help has also been a huge challenge<\/strong>, despite the fact that I am fortunate enough to have adult children and a supportive spouse, who all help out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With no hard end to the workday, I initially found that I was semi-working round the clock.<\/strong> Now I schedule a daily evening walk, and spending an hour outdoors has become the highlight of my day. It really helps to clear my mind. After walking, I cook dinner and then either catch up on work that didn\u2019t get done or hang out with my family and watch Netflix. Occasionally I indulge in some nighttime baking with my daughter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Having both my children under one roof is the one positive aspect of this whole ordeal<\/strong>, and for that I\u2019m very grateful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The blurred lines between different aspects of my life sometimes leave me with a feeling that I\u2019m not giving 100% to anything.<\/strong> I am, however, coming to realize that 100% productivity is not necessarily the goal right now. What we\u2019re going through is not a typical WFH experiment. We\u2019re at home, in the middle of a crisis, and all trying our best to work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On particularly stressful days, stretching and meditation help a lot.<\/strong> I keep a yoga mat near my desk and do a 10-minute stretch or guided meditation in the middle of the day. Exercise is also invaluable. I can\u2019t do what I love (spinning and Pilates classes) so I downloaded a running app called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/couch-to-5k-week-by-week\/\">From Couch to 5K<\/a> and I do an occasional Pilates class on Zoom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m currently reading book three of <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/26828169-the-neapolitan-novels\">Elena Ferrante\u2019s Neapolitan Novels<\/a><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> \u201cThose Who Leave and Those Who Stay.\u201d On Netflix I\u2019m watching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2802850\/\">the series Fargo<\/a>, and re-watching one of my all-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0804503\/\">favorite shows, Mad Men<\/a>. I\u2019m finding it incredibly soothing to watch a beautifully written and executed drama, knowing how it ends. I\u2019m behind on my podcasts because I no longer have my daily two-hour commute, but I try to keep up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/column\/the-daily\">NYT\u2019s The Daily<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510313\/how-i-built-this\">NPR\u2019s How I Built This<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/crooked.com\/podcast-series\/pod-save-america\/\">Crooked Media\u2019s Pod Save America<\/a>. I\u2019ve recently tuned in to <a href=\"https:\/\/homecooking.show\/\">Samin Nosrat\u2019s Home Cooking<\/a>, and I look forward to resuming <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/podcast\/\">our own production, Making It<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The biggest thing that I\u2019ve learned about myself in this period is that tech is not my enemy.<\/strong> I\u2019m the least tech-savvy person on my team, but WFH has given me a new appreciation for technology. Without it, we would not have been able to run the company as smoothly and efficiently as we have in the past few weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m so grateful to be working with an exceptionally talented and dedicated group of individuals <\/strong>who\u2019ve really stepped up during this crisis. Everyone, from our most junior analysts to senior analysts, associates, designers, and developers to our department heads, finance, sales and strategy teams, has been doing an amazing job working from home, and meeting the needs of our clients. This is under extremely challenging conditions, often while dealing with young children, slow internet, and the uncertainty of what the future holds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I think the number-one priority for any business right now is to take care of its people<\/strong> and safeguard their health. Other than that, the secret is really to communicate clearly about the stuff that matters most.
