Hammering on a big block of wood as we note this, today is looking reasonable, too: Markets in Hong Kong, South Korea and China are up this morning (only Japan is mixed) and futures suggest that European and US markets will also open in the green later today.<\/p><p><strong>What\u2019s with the sudden pause in the sell-off? <\/strong>Word that G7 finance ministers and central bank governors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-02\/g-7-finance-ministers-plan-call-tuesday-to-weigh-virus-response?sref=mmeFTDW1\">will meet today<\/a> to discuss a coordinated response to the market meltdown and expectations that covid-19 will slash global growth this year. Just sayin\u2019.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>COVID-19 WATCH- There are now six covid-19 patients abroad who have recent travel <\/strong><strong>history in Egypt:<\/strong> California\u2019s Santa Clara county reported three new cases of covid-19, including a husband and wife who had recently traveled to Egypt have been confirmed with the virus, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com\/2020\/03\/01\/coronavirus-covid19-santa-clara-county-3-new-cases\/\">according to CBS SF<\/a>. Four other people who were diagnosed with the virus <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7d240dc0-8f28-42b9-879c-5d114f19ad0d\">over the weekend<\/a> were also linked to Egypt. The EGX30 closed 0.55% in the green, led by a recovery in banking, healthcare and industrial stocks. CIB \u2014 which accounts for almost a third of the benchmark index \u2014 finished up 0.1%. The EGX30 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f08c248c-dd23-40be-ad28-0be099e8e924\">suffered its worst day\u2019s trading since 2012 on Sunday<\/a>, falling more than 6% as investors reacted to the intensifying covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trading was heavy with more than EGP 959 mn worth of shares changed hands<\/strong>, or around 63% more than the trailing 90-day average.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foreign investors slowed the pace yesterday at which they were exiting EGP bonds<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/03\/02\/1302952\">domestic press report<\/a> suggested. Investors offloaded EGP 4.1 bn worth of bonds on Sunday, but just EGP 297 mn worth yesterday, according to Mahmoud Naghlah, executive manager for fixed income at Al Ahly Financial Investment Management. <strong>Keeping this in perspective: <\/strong>That\u2019s a rounding error in the context of the EGP 289 bn worth of total foreign bond holdings as of the end of January, the most recent period for which we have figures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amid the global risk-off, investors have been<\/strong><strong> demanding higher yields at <\/strong><strong>recent bond auctions:<\/strong> The CBE sold only half of the EGP 7.5 bn of three-year and seven-year treasury bonds in an auction yesterday amid investor pressure for higher yields. Investors bought just EGP 791 mn of the EGP 3.5 bn seven-year offering after the central bank accepted a yield of 13.979%, almost 300 bps beneath the rate targeted by investors. The EGP 4 bn three-year tranche was more than 2x oversubscribed, but the central bank sold EGP 3.189 bn at a 13.986% yield, more than 200 bps lower than investors\u2019 target rate.
