The requirement was triggered after the Saudi network operator entered into an agreement to acquire the 55% stake in Vodafone Egypt help by Vodafone Group.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, <strong>the Egyptian Competition Authority is warning prominent healthcare groups <\/strong><strong>Cleopatra and Alameda not to go ahead with a merger<\/strong>, threatening all manner of consequences if they were to do so. The FEI and ECMA will present to the Finance Ministry their recommendations on these taxes, which will likely include a proposal to either lower or completely scrap the stamp tax to improve market liquidity, division head Awny Abdel Aziz says.<\/p><p><strong>Egypt\u2019s African Union chairmanship ends next week: <\/strong>Egypt will hand the chairmanship of the African Union over to South Africa during a summit of African heads of state <a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/en\/slides\/20191229\/33rd-african-union-summit\">scheduled to take place<\/a> on Sunday and Monday in Addis Ababa. The weak domestic demand will likely worsen the situation for the global oil market, which Opec+ is still scrambling to address after Russia rejected additional output cuts to shore up prices, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-05\/opec-technocrats-prolong-talks-as-russia-resists-cuts?srnd=premium-middle-east\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>A total of 490 people have died from the outbreak<\/strong> and there are more than 24k confirmed cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-04\/china-will-soon-find-out-if-mass-quarantine-worked-virus-update?srnd=premium-middle-east&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Meanwhile, Beijing is still tending to its ongoing fight for economic supremacy against Washington<\/strong>, which isn\u2019t over just because the two signed a preliminary trade agreement, chief economist at Enodo Economics in Longon Diana Choyleva argues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/59febbd8-46d6-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441\">in the Financial Times<\/a>. Choyleva postulates that technology, not trade, will be the real battle arena, which became particularly evident with the US\u2019 crackdown on Huawei. To that end, the White House is working with US tech companies to develop infrastructure and software for 5G telecom networks to undercut Huawei, US President Donald Trump\u2019s chief economic advisor Larry Kudlow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-pushing-effort-to-develop-5g-alternative-to-huawei-11580831592?mod=hp_lead_pos7\">told the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>Saudi\u2019s first post-Aramco IPO is kicking off:<\/strong> Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Group, one of Saudi Arabia\u2019s largest private healthcare operators, is set to begin the bookbuilding process for its planned IPO next Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-02-05\/saudi-healthcare-firm-sulaiman-al-habib-s-ipo-to-start-next-week?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. The offering will see the company sell a 15% stake of its share capital. The shares will be priced on 20 February. Jadwa and Riyad are also acting as financial advisers on the listing, which will act as a litmus test for investor appetite after Aramco raised more than USD 29 bn last December in the world\u2019s biggest-ever IPO.<\/p><p><strong>Intercontinental Exchange bids for eBay:<\/strong> The holding company that operates the New York Stock Exchange has submitted a takeover offer for eBay that would raise the value of the online marketplace to over USD 30 bn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/intercontinental-exchange-approaches-ebay-about-a-takeover-11580845016?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">the Wall Street Journal reports<\/a>. The company, known as ICE, is not really known for acquiring consumer goods companies but has a reputation for buying underperforming trading platforms and turning profits. According to the official, a choice will be made within only \u201ca few days.\u201d Vodafone Group has yet to announce who it has hired as its investment bankers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where STC\u2019s acquisition offer currently stands:<\/strong> STC had signed a non-binding MoU to purchase Vodafone Group\u2019s 55% stake in Vodafone Egypt in a USD 2.39 bn cash agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2020\/01\/30\/vodafone-egypt-ceo-stc-acquisition-good-vote-confidence-egypt\/\">last week<\/a>. The sale values 100% of Vodafone Egypt at USD 4.4 bn and would give STC a 42% share of Egypt\u2019s telecommunications market.The agreement is valid for another 75 days and subject to renewal, but all signs suggest so far that <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/87288608-63d5-47b1-90a8-8c3abc4ad2e5\">the transaction is moving forward<\/a>. Telecom Egypt (TE) has raised no objections to the sale and has telegraphed that it will not exercise its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2020\/01\/30\/vodafone-egypt-ceo-stc-acquisition-good-vote-confidence-egypt\/\">right of first refusal<\/a> under its shareholder agreement with Vodafone Group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moody\u2019s says the agreement could squeeze STC\u2019s margins and push the company into negative credit rating territory<\/strong> if the MTO is entirely debt-funded, especially in light of the telecom operator\u2019s recently inaugurated 5G network. Speaking to us this week is Singapore\u2019s recently-arrived <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dominic-goh-46706715\/\">Ambassador Dominic Goh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My name is Dominic Goh, and I\u2019m Singapore\u2019s ambassador to Egypt, based in Cairo.<\/strong> My wife Sharon and I arrived in Egypt relatively recently, in September 2019. Prior to this, I was ambassador to Laos, and I\u2019ve also served in diplomatic missions in Berlin and Bonn, among other postings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My job requires a lot of adaptability.<\/strong> For expatriates and diplomats, if this doesn't come naturally to you, you'll find it very difficult to enjoy this kind of life. I find it hugely interesting to live in different countries, learn languages, and learn about different cultures, and these are among the reasons why I entered this field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I need a big, strong cup of coffee in the morning to feel that my day has really begun.<\/strong> I\u2019m not particular about what type of coffee I drink; I usually enjoy whatever\u2019s available and fresh in-country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course I read Enterprise from my inbox every morning<\/strong>, and my other go-to local and international news websites include CNN, the BBC, the New York Times, the Financial Times, Al Ahram and Singapore\u2019s the Straits Times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt was the first country in the Arab world to recognize Singapore in 1965<\/strong>, and Singapore sees Egypt as a key partner in the region, with a strategic location as well as an economic hub. The relations between our two countries are excellent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Singapore is actually the fourth largest Asian investor in Egypt<\/strong> \u2014 we have more investments here than in Japan or South Korea. These are mainly in logistics and food processing, but companies operating in other sectors are also starting to discover Egypt. A couple of months ago, our trade and overseas investment arm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enterprisesg.gov.sg\/\">Enterprise Singapore<\/a>, organized a delegation of nine Singaporean companies to Egypt. This week, we have a group of fintech companies visiting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the things we\u2019re working on is improving tourism between our two countries.<\/strong> A recent Singaporean investment in Egypt began with the company owner coming here on holiday. At first, he thought it was just a one-off trip, but as he got more familiar with the country, he started to see possibilities for doing business. A few months later, he established a joint venture with an Egyptian partner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is interested in learning from Singapore\u2019s development experience in the port and education sectors.<\/strong> When President Abdel Fattah El Sisi visited Singapore in 2015, he was impressed with our port, and I believe he encouraged his ministers to study our experience in port management and development. I also recently met with Egypt\u2019s education minister, who said they are interested to learn from us about how we teach math and science, as we have particularly high rankings in these fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Singapore has over 250 students currently studying at Al Azhar University<\/strong>, and this has been the case since the 1960s. The Malay Muslim community in Singapore sends potential imams and religious teachers to be trained at Al Azhar because it is the top university for Islamic studies in the world. And of course, many of these students stay on for Master\u2019s programs and other things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recently I\u2019ve enjoyed reading <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Homo-Deus-Brief-History-Tomorrow\/dp\/0062464310\">Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> It\u2019s a really fascinating book about how AI might reshape and disrupt the global economy in the future. I\u2019ve also been rewatching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1475582\/\">the BBC\u2019s Sherlock<\/a> \u2014 a really intense and suspenseful TV series \u2014 on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Singapore\u2019s arts and culture scene has become quite vibrant nowadays.<\/strong> Apart from the usual shopping on Orchard Road and Marina Bay Sands, I think there\u2019s something for everybody, with classical music, ballet, opera, modern dance, and jazz clubs. We even have Broadway and West End musicals for limited runs almost every year. Food is also a big draw for visitors, and we have a nature reserve right in the center of the island, which is great for hiking and a bit of fresh air.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My advice on acclimatizing to a new environment?<\/strong> Try to focus on the positives, and don\u2019t dwell on what you can\u2019t change. It\u2019s always difficult to leave at the end of a posting, because you form an attachment to the people you meet in each place. But it\u2019s also a part of the job and a phase that we all have to go through.
