It\u2019s a vote of confidence in Egypt by a foreign investor with big ambitions to become a regional player \u2014 and an endorsement of the digital dreams of thousands of startups and large corporations alike. <strong>We sat down with Vodafone Egypt CEO Alexandre Froment-Curtil<\/strong>, who\u2019s staying on to lead the business, to discuss how it unfolded and what it means.<\/p><p><strong>The world is still digesting the Trump administration\u2019s plan to solve the world\u2019s most <\/strong><strong>intractable conflict.<\/strong> Arab states seem to be leaning towards breaking with their traditional support for the Palestinian Authority, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/world\/2020\/01\/30\/arabs-prioritise-key-ties-with-us-against-iran-in-reacting-to-trump-peace-plan\">offering words of appreciation<\/a> to the US and urging Israel and Palestine to consider the offer on the table. More on this in Last Night\u2019s Talk Shows below.<\/p><p><strong>Two opposing takes:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5773138\/trump-israel-palestine-peace-plan\/\">Time\u2019s editor-at-large Ian Bremmer<\/a> heaps praise on the Trump plan for recognizing the on-the-ground realities and finally offering a road map to end the decades-old conflict. On the flipside, Middle East Institute senior fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2020\/01\/29\/trump-middle-east-peace-plan-trojan-horse-israel-occupation-permanent\/\">Khaled El Gindy calls it<\/a> a \u201cpiece of political malware\u201d with ambitions to establish permanent military rule over the Palestinian territories.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>Fed leaves rates on hold:<\/strong> The US Federal Reserve yesterday maintained its benchmark interest rate at 1.5-1.75%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/monetary20200129a.htm\">saying in a statement<\/a> that the current rate is \u201cappropriate to support sustained expansion of economic activity\u201d and inflation returning to its 2% target rate.<\/p><p><strong>The yield on US 10-year treasuries fell to its lowest level since October<\/strong> in response to the Fed meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-29\/asia-stock-futures-slip-u-s-yields-drop-on-fed-markets-wrap?srnd=premium-middle-east&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>US stocks ended the day largely flat on a day of mixed earnings releases and continued concern over the coronavirus.<\/strong> The S&amp;P 500 closed 0.09% in the red, the Dow Jones rose slightly by 0.04% and the Nasdaq finished 0.06% in the green.<\/p><p class=\"web-image stand-out-borderless\"><a href=\"http:\/\/somabay.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2020\/1\/Miss-Germany-Web-1.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\"><\/a><\/p><p><strong>Coronavirus touches down in the Middle East:<\/strong> A Chinese family of four living in the UAE have become the first people in the Middle East to contract the coronavirus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395302819592\">state news agency WAM reported<\/a> yesterday. STC shares dropped 1%, while Vodafone Group saw its London-listed shares fall 0.14%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enterprise yesterday sat down for a one-on-one with Vodafone Egypt CEO Alexandre Froment-Curtil<\/strong> to discuss the transaction and what\u2019s next for Vodafone Egypt. Edited excerpts from our conversation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enterprise: <\/strong>What would like the Egyptian business community to know this morning about the transaction?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexandre Froment-Curtil: We think this transaction is very good news for Egypt<\/strong> \u2014 we have a large foreign investor who's interested in entering Egypt, in entering the sector through a stake in the country\u2019s biggest ICT business. We think that's just a very good vote of confidence for Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s also important to know that this transaction includes a commercial agreement that will keep key elements from Vodafone in Egypt.<\/strong> That\u2019s our partner market agreement, and it\u2019s going to have a tangible effect because our brand will remain as it is. Our brand\u2019s shape, form, and color will stay 100% the same, with no alterations whatsoever. We\u2019ve entered a renewable five-year partner market agreement. I think there's a clear realization that Vodafone Egypt is a brand that lives in the heart of Egyptians, and Vodafone Group is very happy to trust the country to handle the brand properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a management team, we're all committed to working with a new shareholder<\/strong> to ensure continuity and we\u2019re also very much committed to the culture. What makes Vodafone Egypt really special at the end of the day is the people and the culture we have, which stands out from competitors in the market. This, coupled with management\u2019s commitment to continuity under a new shareholder, is the secret sauce of Vodafone Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For enterprise customers, we want them to know we\u2019re delivering stability today, but also continuity and innovation tomorrow.<\/strong> Through our partner market agreement, we\u2019re bringing Vodafone Group technology innovations to Egypt. That includes our internet of things platform, as well as the deployment of our latest network innovations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: So you personally are staying on board?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC: Yes, absolutely.<\/strong> I'm staying in Egypt with the new shareholder because I like the country and I love this business \u2014 and I think we can do great things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: How did this unfold?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC:<\/strong> Vodafone Group has been here in Egypt for 22 years \u2014 and successfully so. The group is present in multiple markets across the world, and this transaction is part of a strategy to simplify our geographical portfolio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: Did you shop the transaction around?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC: No.<\/strong> STC approached Vodafone Group a couple of months ago with an unsolicited buyout offer. The Group\u2019s chief executive, Nick Read, who was appointed 15 months ago, had made clear that we were really clarifying our geographic portfolio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: So there was no competitive process. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC: <\/strong>Correct.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: Had there been any discussion earlier to look at other options like an IPO? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC: <\/strong>None. It was very much unsolicited.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: You\u2019ve recently sold out of<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vodafone.com\/news-and-media\/vodafone-group-releases\/news\/vodafone-group-completes-sale-of-vodafone-new-zealand\">New Zealand<\/a><\/strong><strong>. Where else have you offloaded stakes? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC:<\/strong> We sold out of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-vodafone-chinamobile\/vodafone-sells-china-mobile-stake-for-6-6-billion-idUKTRE6862XG20100907\">China Mobile in 2010<\/a>, we sold out of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052748703806304576241171942708468\">France in 2010<\/a>, and the US in 2013 with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-vodafone-verizon\/verizon-vodafone-agree-to-130-billion-wireless-deal-idUSBRE97S08C20130903\">sale to Verizon<\/a>. We sold out of New Zealand very recently. We also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vodafone.com\/news-and-media\/vodafone-group-releases\/news\/vodafone-announces-agreement-to-sell-vodafone-malta\">sold out of Malta<\/a> very recently. The vision behind all of this is very straightforward: It\u2019s meant to create two distinct geographic areas in which we lead: Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has the highest growth rate among all Vodafone markets and is full of digital potential.<\/strong> It\u2019s a land of opportunity. But while remaining a fantastic business for the group, it is slightly the odd one out just from a geographical perspective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our message to our shareholder has always been that there's more potential, so invest more in Egypt <\/strong>and you will get more return because we can really grow the business fast. So the group decided that, with all their capital allocations in Europe, where we are investing in 5G, it\u2019s best that we continue our growth outside the group. Vodafone Group doesn\u2019t want to be in a situation where they are holding us back from the pace of growth we want.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And now here we are, with another shareholder we believe can fund us properly and propel faster growth.<\/strong> That's very straightforward because, even though it's a very tough decision when you've had a great business and great attachment to the country, the business upside is very clear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: Has there been any discussion about the remaining stake held by Telecom Egypt? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC:<\/strong> Of course. Because we get along very well with Telecom Egypt and also out of respect, we have informed them of what we\u2019re doing. It\u2019s important to note here that STC has made it very clear that they're not interested in acquiring TE\u2019s 45% stake in Vodafone Egypt. They only want Vodafone Group\u2019s share. They\u2019re very happy with the way the current shareholders cooperate and want to continue that relationship. TE has a shareholder agreement with Vodafone Group, and they have a right of first refusal, and we will have the discussion in due course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: Who\u2019s advising on the transaction?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC:<\/strong> We haven\u2019t appointed anyone yet, but we'll be doing so next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: Let\u2019s talk about STC. Around 90% of their revenue is from KSA right now, correct?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC:<\/strong> It\u2019s a heavy part of their business, but they have an ambition to really build their regional presence and be a regional leader. What's interesting for our team is that we have a reputation that Vodafone Egypt's staff and management team are probably one of the best in the Middle East. Our Saudi colleagues are really looking forward to having that on board. They actually want to make us a regional hub. This will all create a very different, interesting dynamic. We were previously a standalone entity between Africa and Europe, but now we have the chance to be at the heart of a region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STC is a good partner for us for many reasons.<\/strong> First and foremost, it continues the FDI story in Egypt, which is very important for the private sector market. Secondly, as you can imagine, STC is a well-funded organization. It actually has zero debt, compared to Vodafone, which currently has high levels of debt. So STC will be able to fund our growth story. Finally, STC has a very clear regional leadership vision. Today, they\u2019re present in five countries, but they have a goal to be the leading operator in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: How would you be a regional hub here? What does that mean? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AFC: Well, I think there are many opportunities. I don\u2019t want to talk on behalf of STC, but for example we\u2019ve built here in Egypt a shared service center. We have 7,800 employees who are serving the rest of the globe. Whereas originally we were serving them in terms of call center services, now <strong>the vast majority of the work we do is in robotics, AI, and app development<\/strong>. That means highly technical and skilled individuals, and I think that is extremely appealing to a group like STC to have that high-quality IT tech capability like we have in Egypt. Our network, the way we develop our apps, the fact that it\u2019s all in-house \u2014 I think that's very exciting. It has evolved from being a straightforward call center service, although we still do have call center and contact center capabilities. For example, 100% of our vote from Ireland's contact center is here. But now it\u2019s developed a lot and is much more focused on high-tech solutions. One example I like a lot is that all our chatbots are developed here. <strong>We\u2019re running smart cities in Spain from here<\/strong>. All these technologies are developed by Egyptians and run out of Egypt. Vodafone Group does not want to let go of that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: Where else does Vodafone have these partner market agreements? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC: We have them in over 60 countries<\/strong>, but what's special here is how STC decided to go ahead with it. Vodafone has a range of services to offer in this type of situation, and typically some countries pick and choose which ones to take. STC said \"I want them all:\" The brand, 100% of the roaming agreements, 100% of your purchasing capabilities, 100% of your technology capabilities, 100% of your global enterprise and customer management. They want everything we have to offer, and that\u2019s great news for us as a local operation because it gives us more continuity in getting and giving the best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: What's driving growth in the telecom market?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC: <\/strong>There's underlying growth, which is of course the population growth. The second driver is demand for data. <strong>Only 25% of customers are on 4G today<\/strong> because of the pace at which customers are upgrading to 4G handsets. Can you imagine that growth potential? And that's very exciting for us, and now for STC. The third layer is actually diversification. Then look at products like Vodafone Cash, our peer-to-peer mobile money transfer service. Then consider the work we're doing with the government on the new universal health insurance, where we are a tech partner to the government in this agreement with them. There is no SIM card. We are a tech partner for the digitization of government and the enterprise \u2014 with or without mobility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E: What are your expectations for growth this year? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFC: We always have double-digit growth expectations.<\/strong> Egypt is really a place where you see potential everyday. And more so for us, we see digital potential everyday. There's not a day when we don\u2019t wake up thinking, \u201cLet\u2019s go after this one today.\u201d That\u2019s the beauty of both the country and the company that we\u2019re in: Not only are there <strong>Sherif Kamel, <\/strong><strong>dean of the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/business.aucegypt.edu\/home\">School of Business<\/a><\/strong><strong> at AUC<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> My Morning Routine looks each week at how a successful member of the community starts their day \u2014 and then throws in a couple of random business questions just for fun. Speaking to us this week is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/membership\/members-database\/2938\/the-american-university-in-cairo\">Sherif Kamel<\/a>, dean of the School of Business at AUC, a top private business school in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m Sherif Kamel, <\/strong>dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/business.aucegypt.edu\/home\">School of Business<\/a> at the American University in Cairo and president of the board of governors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/\">American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I see myself as the CEO of an enterprise<\/strong> that should work hard to always be innovative, competitive, agile and adaptive to local and global changes, to better serve its community both on and off campus. This is how business schools around the world should be operating in this second decade of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My colleagues on campus now call me \u201cSK2.0\u201d<\/strong> because my first spell as dean of the AUC School of Business was from 2009-2014. On a day-to-day basis, I follow up on the execution of school strategy in terms of ongoing academic programs, oversee new projects and initiatives, interact with faculty, students, staff, and alumni, and cultivate the school\u2019s relationships with its corporate partners and business associates in Egypt and globally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I receive almost 600 emails a day, <\/strong>and much of my daily commute is spent responding to them. I usually go to sleep well after midnight, so I wake up around 8am and usually have breakfast at home before heading to the AUC New Campus. I also read a selection of newspapers, including the FT, the NYT, Enterprise, and Al Masry Al Youm, as well as reviewing work-related documents that require my input.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Days that are New Campus-free are usually the most productive.<\/strong> If I\u2019m attending an AmCham committee meeting or an event, or have other school-related commitments off-campus, I\u2019ll often go to my downtown office afterwards. This enables me to spend at least three more hours in the office rather than commuting back and forth across greater Cairo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have never had a mobile phone \u2014<\/strong> although I have lived and breathed technology management for over three decades. Even so, I feel the notion of working hours no longer exists. Interacting for work \u2014 whether in person or by responding to messages \u2014 is a non-stop process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading has always been an integral element of my daily routine.<\/strong> My library at home has over 3,000 books in areas including history, arts, leadership, architecture, innovation, technology, business and economics, in Arabic, English and French. I\u2019m a passionate collector of books about Egypt, especially sociopolitical and historical aspects of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. But I still find it difficult to enjoy electronic books; the likes of Kindle and Nook are simply not for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recently, I\u2019ve enjoyed reading<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/21-Letters-Life-Its-Challenges-ebook\/dp\/B07QRYZFNS\">21 Letters on Life and its Challenges<\/a> by Charles Handy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shaping-Future-Fourth-Industrial-Revolution\/dp\/1984822616\">Shaping the Future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution<\/a> by Klaus Schwab, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lessons-21st-Century-Yuval-Harari\/dp\/0525512179\">21 Lessons for the 21st Century<\/a> by Yuval Noah Harari.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Innovative platforms and experiential learning are set to transform the education space at large.<\/strong> The role of the professor is becoming more that of a facilitator. And learning is increasingly taking place through ongoing conversations in class and online, with the key being how to derive value from the wealth of readily accessible knowledge and move beyond what is already available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business schools need to be flexible and embrace disruption.<\/strong> The future of work and the practice of management will be transformed by emerging innovative technologies including AI, VR, robotics, and the Internet of Things. Business and management education will need to focus on critical and design thinking, creativity, discovery, people management, communication and complex problem solving. Increasing digitization will also impact many basic administrative and managerial activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I see many complementarities between AUC and AmCham and my roles in each.<\/strong> In many different ways, both organizations are active advocates and promoters of Egypt, and they reflect the voice of the private sector, which I strongly believe is an integral building block for inclusive growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lifelong learning should never stop \u2014 <\/strong>no matter one\u2019s age, other commitments, or how much we know (or rather, think we know). Both formal education and everyday experiences are great sources of learning, but remaining open to different ideas is crucial. Some of my most important learning experiences have come from people, and I believe that one should always be ready to learn from the elderly as well as the young.
