The two companies will apparently be signing a memorandum of understanding that could lead to an acquisition (though we\u2019re not quite sure when that will happen).<\/p><p><strong>An announcement coming today?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youm7.com\/story\/2020\/1\/28\/%D8%BA%D8%AF%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%A4%D8%AA%D9%85%D8%B1-%D8%B5%D8%AD%D9%81%D9%89-%D9%84%D8%B1%D8%A6%D9%8A%D8%B3-%D9%81%D9%88%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%81%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B5%D9%88%D8%B5-%D8%B5%D9%81%D9%82%D8%A9-STC\/4607111\">Youm7 reported<\/a> that Vodafone Egypt CEO Alexandre Froment-Curtil will today hold a press conference to address the announcement \u2014 and maybe to officially announce an acquisition by STC, if <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2020\/01\/28\/1290325\">the company source that talked to the press<\/a> is to be believed. We wait with bated breath.<\/p><p><strong>The world\u2019s most prolific headline generator continues to dominate the news cycle this morning:<\/strong> President Trump yesterday unveiled his administration\u2019s long-awaited plans to make Israel great again. The proposals give Israel the all-clear to a large-scale land grab in the West Bank, and in return the Palestinians would receive international investment and be allowed to form a \u201cstate\u201d (emphasis on the inverted commas). We explain in this morning\u2019s Speed Round below.<\/p><p><strong>A bit of perspective courtesy of the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/28\/world\/middleeast\/peace-plan.html\">New York Times<\/a><\/strong><strong>: \u201c<\/strong>Rather than a serious blueprint for peace, analysts called it a political document by a president in the middle of an impeachment trial working in tandem with a prime minister under criminal indictment and about to face his third election in the span of a year.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Speaking of which, the Donald\u2019s ongoing impeachment trial continues to spam our news feeds.<\/strong> Senators will over the coming two days debate whether to allow witness testimony after Trump\u2019s defense yesterday wrapped up their arguments. Trump\u2019s team may soon be looking for a plan B after Monday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3e9f3de1-cf27-4b4c-ae31-b8e9ab86cab4\">potentially-damning allegations<\/a> from ex-national security chief John Bolton increased uncertainty about whether Senate Republicans would have the votes to block witnesses. The Atlantic definitely hasn\u2019t been shy about what it thinks of proceedings, calling the trial an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/01\/senate-begins-solemn-absurd-impeachment\/605290\/\">\u201cabsurdity\u201d<\/a>, Trump\u2019s legal arguments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/01\/republicans-are-racing-finish-impeachment-before-new-evidence-emerges\/605443\/\">\u201ckafkaesque,\u201d<\/a> and the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/01\/utter-ridiculousness-us-senate\/605566\/\">\u201cutterly ridiculous.\u201d<\/a><\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>It\u2019s GERD deadline day (again):<\/strong> We have our fingers crossed that today is the day that Egypt and Ethiopia finally kiss and make up, as talks in Washington come to a close. The original deadline for a final agreement passed earlier this month when Egyptian, Ethiopian, and Sudanese officials agreed on the terms of the initial filling timetable for the dam. This confirms <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2755c86b-ecf4-4813-9eef-073e9809adc6\">rumors last week<\/a> that STC was in talks with the multinational to acquire its 55% stake in its Egypt arm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CEO attributes exit to strategic shift:<\/strong> The statement came following talks between Vodafone Group CEO Nicholas Read, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youm7.com\/story\/2020\/1\/28\/%D9%85%D8%AF%D8%A8%D9%88%D9%84%D9%89-%D9%8A%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%82%D9%89-%D8%B1%D8%A6%D9%8A%D8%B3-%D9%81%D9%88%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%81%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%88%D9%8A%D8%A8%D8%AD%D8%AB-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%AB%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%85%D9%8A%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%AF%D8%A9\/4606056\">Vodafone Egypt CEO Alexandre Froment-Curtil<\/a> and Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly in Cairo yesterday. Read said that the company has decided to exit Egypt because of its \u201cstrategy to focus its investments,\u201d the statement reads. Vodafone has exited several markets in the past year, selling both its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vodafone.com\/news-and-media\/vodafone-group-releases\/news\/vodafone-group-completes-sale-of-vodafone-new-zealand\">New Zealand<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vodafone.com\/news-and-media\/vodafone-group-releases\/news\/vodafone-announces-agreement-to-sell-vodafone-malta\">Malta<\/a> units. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindubusinessline.com\/info-tech\/vodafones-likely-exit-will-cast-india-in-negative-light\/article30238748.ece\">There is also speculation<\/a> that it could leave India following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-50429844\">disastrous quarterly figures<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regulators are ready to sign-off on the acquisition:<\/strong> A source in the telecoms sector <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2tZL4uH\">told Al Mal<\/a> that the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority will approve the acquisition after the companies have finalized an agreement. The due diligence process will take a maximum of six months, the source said, adding that financial and legal advisers to oversee the transaction have not yet been appointed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An acquisition would bring Vodafone\u2019s 22-year history in Egypt to an end:<\/strong> The company has been operating in Egypt since 1998, and is the largest mobile operator in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STC has been eyeing up Vodafone Egypt for years:<\/strong> The Saudi company more than six years ago <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tradearabia.com\/news\/IT_248799.html\">was reported<\/a> to be engaged in acquisition talks with state-owned Telecom Egypt over its 45% stake in the company. Telecom Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2aeaaf07-1a71-440b-9442-db8e3a5899ae\">said on Sunday<\/a> that it has no plans to exit the company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Telecom
