newfound love and appreciation for Tom Cruise after the Scientologist went on this <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rexchapman\/status\/1339020608294838273?s=12\">gloriously profane rant<\/a><\/strong>, telling crew members on his Mission Impossible set that they are \u201c[redacted] gone\u201d and \u201cmother[redacted]ers\u201d for having violated covid-19 protocols that risked shutting down production.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>The big business story of the day globally: It\u2019s been a really bad week for Big Tech <\/strong>as 10 US states said yesterday that they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-tech-antitrust-google\/texas-and-nine-other-u-s-states-sue-google-for-abusing-market-power-idUSKBN28Q2RL\">suing Google<\/a> for anti-competitive behavior in the advertising market. The search giant is accused of having conspired with Facebook (itself the subject of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2020\/12\/ftc-sues-facebook-illegal-monopolization\">new anti-monopoly probe<\/a>) to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-16\/google-sued-by-texas-over-abuse-of-dominance-in-antitrust-case\">rig the ad market<\/a>. The issue: EMs will lag behind advanced economies in obtaining and distributing their share of the jabs. As the vaccines become available in all corners of the world and brings the pandemic under control, EM central banks could face pressure to reverse their record policy easing \u2014 especially as the EM debt pile is at all-time highs thanks to massive stimulus packages. The facility on the Cairo-Ismailia Desert Road includes a 16-car showroom and has the capacity to service more than 100 cars a day in over 30 service bays \u2014 meaning shorter wait times for the gearheads among us taking our vehicles in for service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SMART POLICY- The International Finance Corporation<\/strong> and <strong>AmCham<\/strong> are <a href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.ifc.org\/all\/pages\/PressDetail.aspx?ID=26110\">working together<\/a> to help businesses in Egypt create more inclusive and accommodating workplaces for women. The program covers introducing flexible work policies, childcare provision and mental health services \u2014 all of which may sound like the ABCs of inclusivity for half of the country\u2019s labor force, but continue to be overlooked in many workplaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>She\u2019s not Egyptian, but we love MacKenzie Scott<\/strong>, the author and ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who is now the world\u2019s 18th wealthiest person. She has donated unprecedented sums this past year to awesome causes. Edited excerpts from our conversation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>My name is Rami Sidani, and I\u2019m a fund manager with <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schroders.com\/\">Schroders Investment<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schroders.com\/\">Management<\/a><\/strong>, the UK-headquartered firm with offices around the world. I\u2019m based in Dubai and we cover the markets that are just a notch under emerging. We invest in exotic places spanning the globe, whether that\u2019s Egypt, Kenya, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines \u2014 or Argentina, Peru and Columbia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I wake up at 7am and have breakfast with my family before the kids leave for school and I<\/strong><strong> start following Asian markets.<\/strong> I start early because I invest in Southeast Asia, and they\u2019re ahead of us on the clock. My morning is usually devoted to followups and trades and staying up-to-date on news and developments in Asia, with Vietnam and the Philippines being the largest markets in that geography.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We have three kids now.<\/strong> Nazih, 5, and, Malek, 3, were joined by Serena on 20 May 2020 \u2014 she\u2019s six months old now. I melt every time she smiles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 8:05am Dubai time, I get Enterprise.<\/strong> Egypt is a big market for us, but I read Enterprise because I just love the comprehensiveness of it. The global updates are all there, and I often find myself following links to topics like the US elections or about some interesting idea you\u2019ve incorporated and sometimes I need to control it. The idea is that I need to be in the office by 9am so that I\u2019m ready for the GCC market open at 10am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re partially WFH and partially in the office.<\/strong> I live just three minutes from the office and we\u2019re well spaced out. We\u2019re a small team in Dubai and most of the group is back in London, so we were really good with virtual meetings and the like before covid hit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My day is busy \u2014 there are just so many countries<\/strong> where I need to stay abreast of current affairs because our returns can to a large extent be dictated by local developments. So it\u2019s lots of news, lots of conference calls with people on the ground. A lot of time with analysts and, most importantly, with the teams at the companies in which we invest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business travel isn\u2019t dead. Not when you consider how important good company <\/strong><strong>management is to our decisions.<\/strong> We\u2019re long-term investors in public equities and we\u2019ve been here a long time, so we\u2019ve got strong ties with management teams built through years of in-person meetings. The length of these relationships gives us comfort, but I really want to jump on a plane again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I miss Cairo and hope it\u2019s one of my first trips when the world normalizes.<\/strong> We visit Cairo 2-3 times a year. It\u2019s the largest market for us in the region and has really interesting long-run prospects. It\u2019s also a lot of fun and has a very special energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021 is going to be the year for Egypt.<\/strong> We think the stars are aligned in terms of lower rates (the lowest in a decade) that will spur investment and accelerate credit growth. We\u2019re going to see tourism pick up as the world normalizes. The Grand Egyptian Museum\u2019s opening will be a big milestone and the major revamp of the Pyramids plateau that you\u2019ve been writing about will pave the way for a strong recovery in tourism. We also see Egypt reaping the fruits of all of the investment the government has been doing to connect cities and build out infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is a massive market \u2014 100 mn people and very favorable demographics.<\/strong> The economy is relatively very nascent and the penetration rates speak to the potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Financial inclusion is low by any measure<\/strong> \u2014 from the ratio of credit to GDP, to private sector loans, to cash usage in the economy to, of course, the size of the parallel economy, which could be as big as the official economy. Egypt can easily accelerate growth from 5-6% to 7-8% if it attracts more foreign direct investment, and the government is doing a solid job with pro-business reforms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is a structural growth story with years ahead of it<\/strong> given the low base, how uninvested it is. The float of the EGP in 2016 paved the way for sustainable growth. So we\u2019re really constructive on Egypt, which stands out as one of the very few places that has grown despite covid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are I afraid the robots will take my job? Not today<\/strong>, but it\u2019s hard to have a five-year view on this given how fast technology is evolving. My wife and I worry what it means for our kids. But on the job, Schroders has given us phenomenal access to new tools, particularly when it comes to data analytics, which we\u2019ve been introducing as a central pillar in our investment process. The use of technology will only increase from here \u2014 we know the direction of travel. The early adopters are the ones who will emerge stronger tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My organizational system is \u2026 organized chaos.<\/strong> My day speeds by quickly, so I need to stay really organized just to keep up with my responsibilities. I\u2019m very different in my personal life \u2014 I don\u2019t book personal trips in advance and I\u2019m late for dinners with friends. But at work, I\u2019m organized and it\u2019s about planning way, way ahead. Working for a UK firm pushed me further in that direction \u2014 it was culture shock. I mean, I\u2019m Lebanese and I live in MENA, but in the UK you get a Christmas party menu to choose from in August. \u201cYeah, I think I\u2019ll feel like having the duck in December.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asset management is a lifestyle<\/strong>, whether it's travel or reading the FT and the Economist on the weekend. But Friday and Saturday are precious \u2014 sacred, really. We won\u2019t do anything that doesn\u2019t involve our kids. It\u2019s about sports and lunches and the beach. Evenings are for seeing friends who we consider an extended family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My wife and I like to unwind with a good television series<\/strong> before lights out. We try to limit it to a single episode a day, but we\u2019ll binge on the right show. We watched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbo.com\/succession\">Succession<\/a> during lockdown and we\u2019re waiting for season three now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best piece of advice I\u2019ve ever been given has nothing to do with investing<\/strong>, and that\u2019s how important it is to really listen. It\u2019s a lesson my father taught me and one I\u2019m trying to cement with my kids. Understanding how important it is to listen changes your perspective. The ability to really listen to different views and opinions and learn from people\u2019s experiences is an art.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n
