Egypt was among the countries participating in clinical trials for Sinopharm entry, which has shown to be <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/abeb3580-65c6-492c-a931-1ac75085363a\">86% effective in fighting the disease<\/a>. We have chapter and verse in this morning\u2019s Covid Watch, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it\u2019s decision day for Brexit<\/strong> as both European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and UK PM Boris Johnson said it was unlikely the two would agree on a trade pact by today\u2019s deadline. Business competition rules and fishing rights are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-politics-55271914\">the main sticking points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR-<\/strong> <strong>The legislative branch of government will wake from its <\/strong><strong>slumber this week. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Up first:<\/strong> The final results for parliamentary elections held in Cairo and 11 other governorates will be announced tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>he current crop of MPs meets again on Tuesday<\/strong> when the House of Representatives reconvenes from its fall recess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also on Tuesday: The US Federal Open Market Committee kicks off its two-day policy <\/strong><strong>meeting<\/strong> to review interest rates. Here at home, the Central Bank of Egypt will meet to do the same on Christmas Eve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA- The weather is probably going to suck this week. <\/strong>There\u2019s no more polite word for it. Agri outfit Galina Holding and Arabia Investment Holding\u2019s financial services arm are also said to be considering tapping the market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A new entrant in the IPO sweepstakes: <\/strong><strong>Cottonil is considering going public next year<\/strong>, Chairman Basil Samakia told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gD3oOk\">Masrawy<\/a>, without disclosing any further details on the size or expected value of the offering. Samakia added that the company plans to open 50 new branches this coming year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not heading to IPO soon: <\/strong>Qalaa Holdings energy play TAQA Arabia, which had previously planned to list 30-40% of its shares. This is the first of several shipments that Egypt is due to receive of the Chinese vaccine, clinical trials for which showed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/abeb3580-65c6-492c-a931-1ac75085363a\">an efficacy rate of 86%<\/a>, Zayed said. Egypt and the UAE were among the nations that held clinical trials for the job, and Health Ministry scientists have signed off on the use of the vaccine. Its emergency use has been approved by the WHO, said Information Minister Osama Heikal in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/photos\/a.825570437621323\/1804237633087927\/\">a statement on Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zayed herself was part of the clinical trials<\/strong> for the Sinopharm offering, rolling up her sleeve for the cameras to take the needle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has ordered that the vaccine be distributed without charge<\/strong> to all Egyptians, Heikal\u2019s statement added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will the vaccine be distributed?<\/strong> The vaccine will first be administered to frontline health workers, particularly in hospitals, isolation wards, and respiratory clinics, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/egypt.mohp\/photos\/a.122315979319023\/261631672054119\">a Health Ministry statement on Friday<\/a>. Next up on the priority list are those who are most at risk of severe covid symptoms, including cancer patients, and those suffering from organ failure, the statement noted. It did not give a timeline on when the vaccine will be distributed to the next tier of recipients or the wider population.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a two-stage jab, just like AstraZeneca\u2019s:<\/strong> The Sinopharm vaccine is administered in two jabs 21 days apart, each administered to the upper arm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We could start making the vaccine ourselves<\/strong>, Zayed said in a phone-in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5uLzcDzGJHk\">DMC on Friday<\/a>. Financial negotiations over a production license are underway and Egypt has already established a production line for the vaccine at state-owned vaccine maker Vacsera, the minister said, with an eye to potentially exporting the vaccine to other African countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The government will also be launching a vaccine registration website<\/strong> in the coming days through which citizens can check the availability of and register for receiving the vaccine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5uLzcDzGJHk\">Zayed told DMC<\/a>, though no further details were provided on whether registration through the site would be mandatory or how exactly it would function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is still lining up an arsenal of doses <\/strong>that includes jabs from AstraZeneca (the \u201cOxford\u201d vaccine) as well as Russia\u2019s Sputnik V.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AstraZeneca will combine its covid-19 vaccine with Russia\u2019s Sputnik V<\/strong> in clinical trials that will determine whether they are more effective when mixed together, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-11\/astrazeneca-to-test-combining-its-covid-19-vaccine-with-russia-s-kik72q77?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. The trials could begin before the end of the year. The AstraZeneca\/Oxford University vaccine is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/abeb3580-65c6-492c-a931-1ac75085363a\">between 62-90% effective<\/a>, while Sputnik V has a reported <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2c64b1f9-f489-4563-ab33-86d9b6f42c9d\">92% efficacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The news comes as the official covid-19 case count continues to rise. <\/strong>The Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3a49Ex8\">reported<\/a> 478 new covid-19 infections yesterday, up from 464 cases <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3md6XM4\">on Friday<\/a> and 445 <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/344T2BR\">on Thursday<\/a>. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 121,089 confirmed cases of covid-19. The ministry also reported 21 new deaths yesterday, 23 on Friday, and 22 on Thursday, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 6,898.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, the EU will provide Egypt with an additional EUR 89 mn under the<\/strong> <strong>second phase of the Health Sector Policy Support Program <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3qNlRwd\">HSPSP<\/a>) in efforts to support the country\u2019s covid-19 response, according to an International Cooperation Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3qNlgup\">statement<\/a>. UAE- and Saudi-based companies accounted for the lion\u2019s share, with Emirati startups raising USD 16.5 mn and Saudi companies raising USD 8.7 mn. <strong>In total, 30 MENA startups attracted investors in November.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Top industries: <\/strong>The leading industries were <strong>logistics<\/strong> (which reeled in USD 9.4 mn), <strong>e-commerce<\/strong> (USD 6.2 mn), <strong>gaming<\/strong> (USD 6 mn), <strong>SaaS<\/strong> (USD 4.1 mn) and <strong>fintech<\/strong> (USD 4 mn). The increase was driven by higher food prices, which single-handedly brought annual inflation to its highest <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a53e67cb-ab77-417d-a85e-d21ff4469016\">since May<\/a>. Monthly headline figures remained muted at 0.8%, but higher than 0.3% in November 2019. The monthly rate was, however, lower than October\u2019s 1.8%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food prices across the country edged up 3.2% on a monthly basis<\/strong> (and 4% y-o-y), Capmas said. Vegetable prices were the culprit, increasing over 25% on a monthly and annual basis, and offsetting a softer drop in the price of fruits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annual core inflation<\/strong> \u2014 which strips out volatile items such as food and fuel \u2014 rose marginally to 4% in November, from 3.9% last month, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2020\/12\/CPI_press-release_November-2020.pdf\">central bank figures (pdf)<\/a>. Monthly core inflation, meanwhile, fell to 0 from 1.7% in October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The increase in the annual rate was higher than expected<\/strong>, Pharos head of research Radwa El Swaify said on Thursday. Pharos had forecast an annual headline rate of 5.1% in November and a monthly rate of 0.3%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inflation is expected to accelerate in the coming months<\/strong> as food prices are likely to increase further and as the price of Brent crude rebounds, Capital Economics said. The EGP is also forecast to weaken in the months ahead, adding pressure on the headline rate. However, inflation isn\u2019t likely to exceed the mid-point of the CBE\u2019s range, it added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That hasn\u2019t dampened hope for further rate cuts: <\/strong>Policymakers are expected to keep rates unchanged in their upcoming meeting, after having already lowered rates by 400 basis points so far into the year, El Swaify said.
