Train and bus connections in Wuhan and the surrounding cities have been heavily monitored and regulated since the outbreak last week.<\/p><p><strong>Security at airports has been heightened globally<\/strong> as France, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and the US confirmed cases of the infectious disease within their borders. Passengers arriving to Cairo from China or those showing signs of sickness upon arrival at the airport will also be undergoing screening by health monitors, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL8N29S5QG\">Reuters reports<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2020-wuhan-novel-coronavirus-outbreak\/?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg is attempting to map the outbreak<\/a> with a series of graphics.<\/p><p><strong>Fears about the outbreak finally brought some volatility to US equities on Thursday, with the S&amp;P 500 falling<\/strong><strong> almost 1%<\/strong> \u2014 its biggest decrease in nearly four months, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-24\/after-months-of-calm-volatility-finally-resurfaces-in-stocks?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>But analysts say there\u2019s still no need to panic:<\/strong> Investors are showing caution with stocks close to all-time highs, due to the still-unknown nature of the virus, which could develop into something more severe. Israel\u2019s caretaker Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his centrist rival Benny Gantz are set to visit the White House on Tuesday to discuss the plans. The plan, which has been in the works for several years, has been met with multiple delays, the latest of which was the resignation of Middle East peace envoy Jason Greenblatt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/09\/what-were-tracking-on-9-september-2019\/\">resignation in September<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Surprising nobody, Trump predicts Palestinians will react \u201cnegatively at first\u201d to the proposed plan<\/strong>, but maintains that \u201cit\u2019s actually very positive for them.\u201d The Palestinian Authority has reportedly not been invited to participate in any talks, Palestine\u2019s presidential spokesperson said, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL8N29T1M9\">according to Reuters<\/a>. What\u2019s more, as three financial experts at the World Bank and Bank of International Settlements highlight in this <a href=\"https:\/\/voxeu.org\/article\/digital-money-implications-emerging-market-and-developing-economies\">VoxEU<\/a> piece, the problems inherent with scaling up a stablecoin system are only magnified in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), meaning their usefulness to increasing financial inclusion will likely be negligible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part of this is due to resource constraints in EMDEs:<\/strong> Countries, especially those with populations living over very large, remote areas, will face uphill battles trying to provide widespread service coverage: whether that be ensuring everyone has adequate phones and internet connectivity to use stablecoin systems, or that users have a physical agent in reach to convert their digital currency into local notes. Then there\u2019s the issues of security, privacy and regulation. Fears that even advanced economies would be unable to prevent stablecoins being used for nefarious purposes has been one of the prominent arguments against projects like Libra taking root. And EMDEs, which tend to have weaker regulators and supervisory capacity, would likely find these challenges even harder to surmount.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An influx of stablecoins probably wouldn\u2019t be good for EMDE financial systems:<\/strong> The monetary policies of the currencies that back the stablecoin would effectively be exported to EMDEs as its use proliferates. \u201c\u2018Stablecoin-isation\u2019 could mean less effective monetary transmission and, in the extreme, countries that face shocks \u2013 political, economic or financial \u2013 could face deposit outflows from banks and capital flight,\u201d they write. Our ranking has improved strikingly from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/17\/egypt-nearing-the-bottom-of-the-list-of-global-internet-speeds\/\">154<\/a> last July and from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/issues\/2019\/09\/17\/will-healthcare-tithe-capped-egp-10k-businesses\/#76834\">166<\/a> in December 2018. The average download speed, 26.52 mbps is still quite far from a global average of 73.58. We\u2019re still, however, behind a host of African countries including South Africa (96), Cape Verde (89), Congo (88), Ghana (79), and Madagascar (72). The improvement in fixed broadband appears to be due to Telecom Egypt investing close to USD 16 bn since mid-2018 to improve internet infrastructure.
