Speaking of which...<\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a><strong> Today is the day we say sayonara to the Ever Given.<\/strong> The mega container vessel that managed to get itself stuck in the Suez Canal for six days in March will finally be allowed to leave Egypt today after its owner came to an agreement with Suez Canal Authority this week. A signing ceremony for the settlement will take place in Ismailia later today, after which the Ever Given will up-anchor and leave the Bitter Lake, where it has been detained for almost three months.<\/p><p><strong>The final hurdle was cleared yesterday when the Ismailia Economic Court <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/83b3f444-21ac-4ccf-a22b-992c014a2381\">allowed the<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/83b3f444-21ac-4ccf-a22b-992c014a2381\">ship\u2019s release<\/a><\/strong>, lifting a court order allowing the SCA to confiscate the vessel. This came a few days after the ship\u2019s owner Shoei Kisen reportedly agreed to pay USD 540 mn to the authority (though we still don\u2019t know the precise terms of the agreement). Ethiopia is yet to comment on the ministry\u2019s statement.<\/p><p><strong>UN, US call for calm:<\/strong> The UN and US yesterday urged Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to avoid taking any unilateral action and called on them to return to the negotiating table, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/un-urges-ethiopia-egypt-sudan-recommit-dam-talks-2021-07-06\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated support for the current African Union-mediated process, with his spokesperson calling on the countries to \u201crecommit themselves to engage in good faith in a genuine process.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Ethiopia has sent its own letter to the council<\/strong>, objecting to the \u201cmeddling\u201d of the Arab League in the issue, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mfaethiopia\/status\/1412347127045492737\/photo\/1\">Ethiopian Foreign Ministry<\/a>. The statement is referring to the emergency meeting last month in which the league called on the UN Security Council to intervene in the dispute.<\/p><p><strong>And Saudi Arabia has reiterated its support for Egypt and Sudan<\/strong>, calling on the international community in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spa.gov.sa\/viewstory.php?lang=ar&amp;newsid=2251941\">a statement<\/a> yesterday to \u201cintensify efforts\u201d to find a solution to the dispute.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><a id=\"tldr-story-06\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>EGX UPDATE- <\/strong><strong>Blame the sell-off on the GERD: <\/strong>The 1.9% slump on the EGX 30 yesterday was the market reacting to the rising GERD tensions, Pharos Holding\u2019s Radwa El Swaify told us yesterday. A rare, and as-yet unresolved public dispute between Saudi Arabia and the UAE over production quotas has the world wondering whether the alliance will be able to agree to raise supply.<\/p><p><strong>The immediate risk:<\/strong> Rising prices and higher global inflation. A OPEC+ pact is needed to temper price which have surged in recent weeks as supply fails to meet surging demand.<\/p><p><strong>And in the medium-term:<\/strong> Discord in OPEC+ could result in a new price war, with countries producing however much they want, and sending prices plummeting. As one analyst said; \u201cIf you have 23 oil-producing countries that are party to an agreement, and that agreement isn\u2019t extended, and the price of crude is in the mid- USD 70s, that\u2019s an engraved invitation to overproduce.\u201d <a Occupancy in Red Sea resorts Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada almost doubled to 35-40% from 20-23% in the same period a year earlier, while hotels in Cairo operated at 45% capacity, up from 27% last year, the source said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Occupancy limits raised:<\/strong> The government yesterday began allowing hotels, restaurants and other non-essential businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2e610747-1d5b-49ff-a263-f09285820df2\">to operate at 70% capacity<\/a>, raising the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1bb3ec4e-133c-4cf4-a351-b54b300e282f\">50% limit<\/a> that had been in place for a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The recovery is real:<\/strong> Some <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/15f0df47-4379-4fd9-a53b-2b079effa7ad\">3.5 mn tourists<\/a> visited the country during the first six months of the year \u2014 almost the same number of people who visited Egypt in the whole 2020. This brought in revenues worth USD 3.5-4 bn. Tourism is a vital source of hard currency for Egypt and accounts for around 15% of GDP, but the shuttering of the industry due to covid caused revenues to plummet 70% to just USD 4 bn last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest figures are in line with forecasts:<\/strong> Colliers International expects average occupancies in Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e3ac0c7c-9258-4a62-b6e9-893075c674c5\">hit 42% and 46% respectively<\/a> through 2021. Cairo and Alexandria are expected to achieve rates of 44% and 59%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The government is also optimistic:<\/strong> Egypt is expecting a 45-60% y-o-y increase in incoming tourists, and is eyeing tourism revenues between <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9dfb2aca-9170-4294-8bfe-e91864b1a1f6\">USD 6 bn and USD 9 bn<\/a> by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But: Some countries continue to see Egypt as a risk. <\/strong>European travel operator TUI yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/83b3f444-21ac-4ccf-a22b-992c014a2381\">suspended all summer holiday packages<\/a> to Egypt until 31 July due to \u201cuncertainty around travel.\" <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/49d984c1-3825-437c-b742-2fce3cf21689\">The UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f385377c-da53-42a2-b492-2474ec19e5f1\">Morocco<\/a> have put in place a mandatory quarantine for travellers flying in from Egypt, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/effb07f4-20de-4abb-9be8-cb5c385292e5\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> has classified the country as a \u201cvery high risk\u201d destination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then there\u2019s Russia<\/strong>, which is taking its sweet time adding its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3374da94-62a9-49ab-be30-3e93e44241e8\">finishing touches<\/a>\u201d to plans to resume flights to the Red Sea. We were expecting Russian tourists to start flying into Sharm and Hurghada <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c519a123-45d0-4854-bea1-74e7059dfcfd\">in June<\/a>, but Russian officials have refused to commit to a timetable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A slow vaccine rollout is seen as the biggest threat to domestic tourism<\/strong>, something the government is doing its best to mitigate. Tawasol already <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a108ea38-12e7-4974-9c7c-e191893d0399\">owns 26%<\/a> of Alex Medical, meaning the acquisition would give the consortium 100% ownership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This was a response to bids submitted by Tana Africa and Global One Healthcare<\/strong>, which offered to purchase the company for <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d5dda1b5-e29d-44de-adad-25b7807093f7\">EGP 49.04 per share<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/324b0f80-415a-4f55-93a2-f4bef5c8108d\">EGP 47.98<\/a>. Under the changes, the boards of EGX-listed firms and non-banking financial services companies will be required to be at least 25% women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The regulator tried something similar last year:<\/strong> The FRA gave the 48% of EGX companies that still had all-male boards <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/87db7c53-8836-44fe-8114-5a784989d4ee\">until the end of 2020<\/a> to appoint just one female director. This didn\u2019t quite go to plan though, with EGX boss Mohamed Farid <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fda287e7-5aec-4eb7-952a-e7ce22c88588\">admitting<\/a> that by the end of 2020, the percentage of companies with female representation had risen to just 65%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things seem to have improved since:<\/strong> Almost 85% of EGX companies now have at least one woman on their boards, according to figures given by FRA head Mohamed Omran yesterday. Two hundred of the 237 companies listed on the exchange are now in compliance, he said, adding that 581 NBFS institutions now have female representation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compare this to 2019<\/strong>, when more than half of listed companies didn\u2019t have a single woman on their boards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then there\u2019s this:<\/strong> Figures from the 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/7\/women-on-boards-monitoring-report-2020-full-english-report.pdf\">Women on Boards Observatory report (pdf)<\/a> report show that women accounted for 11.2% of all directors in listed companies last year, which while low, is an improvement on the 10.1% a year earlier. And companies regulated by the FRA increase female representation to 14.7% from 11.2% during 2020. Then there\u2019s music streaming service Anghami which <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7268870a-5759-4109-9e42-9a87f9958984\">plans to hit the Nasdaq<\/a>by merging with a blank-check firm. Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala is also about to roll out two SPACs that will look for companies in the technology and healthcare sectors.<\/p><p><strong>Retail inflows hit 7-year high as US day traders keep on buying:<\/strong> US retail investors bought nearly USD 28 bn of stocks and ETFs in June, the highest figure since at least 2014 \u2014 surpassing the amount spent during the meme-stock rally earlier this year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/retail-investors-power-the-trading-wave-with-record-cash-inflows-11625477401?mod=markets_lead_pos5\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>.
