All that and more in this morning\u2019s news well, below.<\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORY THIS MORNING-<\/strong><\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>It\u2019s the UAE vs the world as high stakes OPEC+ m<\/strong><strong>eetings resume <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/en\/press_room\/6482.htm\">today<\/a><\/strong><strong> to hash out an agreement on raising oil <\/strong><strong>production.<\/strong> \u201cAccept our terms or blow up the OPEC+ alliance\u201d appears to be Abu Dhabi\u2019s negotiating tactic, which was the only country to refuse to sign onto an agreement to ramp up production last week. The UAE is demanding that it be allowed to produce more oil and argues that the quotas negotiated by Saudi Arabia and Russia are unfair.<\/p><p><strong>The core of the disagreement: baselines.<\/strong> Under the current supply-cut regime, baseline production figures are used to calculate how much each country is allowed to produce. The UAE\u2019s current baseline is 3.2 mn barrels per day, which it claims is too low and should be 3.8 mn. Abu Dhabi is also frustrated seeing the bns of USD it has invested in expanding capacity going to waste, and wants to ramp up production.<\/p><p><strong>A clash between allies:<\/strong> Neither the UAE and Saudi Arabia have signalled that a pact is around the corner, with energy ministers from both countries taking uncompromising public stances.<\/p><p><strong>Stakes are high:<\/strong> Failure to find an agreement would do one of two things. Oil prices \u2014 already surging due to rising demand and tightening supply \u2014 are sent even higher as output fails to meet demand. Or the fractious meetings cause a disintegration of the loose alliance of oil producers, triggering another race-to-the-bottom price war of the kind we saw last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-04\/high-stakes-oil-diplomacy-puts-future-of-opec-deal-at-risk?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/07\/04\/uae-unconditionally-supports-opec-supply-increase-minister-says.html\">CNBC<\/a> have the info.<\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong> <strong>The global business press is zoning in on the latest regulatory <\/strong><strong>crackdown in China<\/strong>, which yesterday <strong>pulled the plug on ride-hailing giant Didi <\/strong>just days after it listed on the Nasdaq. The country\u2019s cyber security regulator has ordered Didi removed from domestic app stores, alleging that the company has illegally collected customer data and violated antitrust rules. The decision comes days after the ride-hailing giant raised USD 4.4 bn in the biggest Chinese IPO in the US since 2014. <strong>The story is leading the front pages<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/809b31e2-6b1e-42b6-8009-3ea78969d870\">the Financial Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-04\/china-regulator-orders-didi-to-be-removed-from-app-stores?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/chinas-internet-regulator-finds-serious-problems-with-didi-china-units-app-11625402263?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/07\/04\/didi-app-suspended-in-china-over-data-protection.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>***CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> on the top stories from yesterday\u2019s edition of EnterprisePM:<\/p><ul>\n<li><strong>Leasing provider GlobalCorp\u2019s owners want out: <\/strong>Unnamed Europe-based investors are <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e6ebaa26-8ace-4a91-b982-969da017dead\">looking to snap up 90%<\/a> of Ezdehar and Sanad Fund\u2019s leasing and non-banking financial services portfolio company <a href=\"https:\/\/globalcorp-fin.com\/\">GlobalCorp<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tourism staging (somewhat) of a comeback: <\/strong>Tourism revenues <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/15f0df47-4379-4fd9-a53b-2b079effa7ad\">clocked in at nearly USD 4 bn<\/a> in 1H2021, almost as much as they were in the whole of 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-04\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Shoukry is in New York today ahead of the UN Security Council meeting on GERD: <\/strong>Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry flew to New York yesterday to prepare for the UN Security Council meeting on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis that is due to take place later this week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/170911475079281\">a statement<\/a> by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez. Shoukry is set to meet with a number of officials from the council to press Egypt\u2019s position on Ethiopia unilaterally resuming the second filling of the dam.<\/p><p><strong>The council could meet this Thursday to discuss the crisis<\/strong>, the Sudanese government <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3fdabda8-202f-4bfa-b853-14837402f631\">said<\/a> last week. Cairo and Khartoum are also cooking up a draft resolution to hand to the council that would set a six-month deadline for the three countries to wrap up negotiations and draft a binding agreement on filling and operating the dam.<\/p><p><strong>Will anything come of it? <\/strong>While Egypt and Sudan are pushing hard for the matter to be resolved at the meeting (and Ethiopia pushing in the opposite direction), French UN Ambassador and council president Nicolas de Riviere told reporters <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/am-edition\/#tldr-story-06\">last week<\/a> that the meeting will likely not amount to much.<\/p><p><strong>The British Egyptian Business Association\u2019s (BEBA) virtual education week starts today:<\/strong> Three seminars will take place today and tomorrow, starting with a talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_6h0ENWL5Rg61kAViRsbi7Q\">skills-based learning<\/a> at 10am this morning. href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4cKsY4AGBOA\">watch, runtime 15:04<\/a>) last night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The daily covid tally fell again yesterday: <\/strong>The Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/egypt.mohp\/posts\/122870740024149\">reported<\/a> 179 new covid-19 infections yesterday, down from 181 the day before. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 282,082 confirmed cases of covid-19. The ministry also reported 22 new deaths, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 16,264.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 50% cap on <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1bb3ec4e-133c-4cf4-a351-b54b300e282f\">hotels<\/a><\/strong><strong> had been in place for more than a year<\/strong> since being raised from 25% in June 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/350356d0-32af-4a3d-b691-2d6b22699867\">Restaurants and cafes<\/a> were allowed to have their capacity increased to half a month later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The move comes as anticipation builds for a full tourism recovery:<\/strong> The government expects tourism to bring in between USD 6-9 bn this year as the global vaccine rollout helps to normalize international travel and visitors return to Egypt. Around 3.5 mn tourists visited the country during the first six months of the year, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3106a1b0-6cfc-4c04-80c9-8da5fe98049e\">almost the same amount of people<\/a> who visited Egypt in the whole of last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the plan for Eid Al Adha prayers? The Awqaf Ministry is yet to decide whether to open ladies\u2019 prayer halls at mosques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest vaccination tally: <\/strong>Around 4.5 mn people have now received at least one dose of a covid-19 vaccine in the five months since the government <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cf9c4d8a-f9e7-42db-8659-e5eaf8a80788\">began its vaccination campaign<\/a>, Saad noted. Nearly 15.2k vehicles were sold during the month, up from only 8k in May 2020. On a monthly basis, however, sales were down from 16k cars sold in April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep this in mind:<\/strong> The favorable base effect means that these annual percentages aren\u2019t quite as impressive as they seem. This time last year, auto sales had hit the skids as the government\u2019s lockdown measures caused a sharp drop in consumer demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Total auto sales up y-o-y but down m-o-m: <\/strong>Total auto sales, which includes busses and trucks, also soared 73% y-o-y to 21k vehicles in May. That said, auto sales fell 5% from 22k units in April. Truck sales rose 82% y-o-y to nearly 4k, from 2.2k in the same month in 2020. This was, however, a significant drop from 4.2k trucks sold in April. Bus sales were down both y-o-y (-3.5%) and m-o-m (-1%) with 1.8k units sold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s been selling? <\/strong>GB Auto\u2019s Hyundai held the largest market share of passenger car sales, coming in at 15%, followed by Nissan (12%), and Kia (11%). Across the wider auto market, Chevrolet (19%), Toyota (11%), and Hyundai (11%) led sales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pandemic wasn\u2019t too kind to the auto industry (but it turned out alright): <\/strong>Sales fell as much as 26% at the height of the lockdown in April as dealerships were shuttered and consumers deferred purchases. In June, the South African rand and the Russian ruble \u2014 formerly this year\u2019s best performers \u2014 stalled, weighing down an index of emerging-market currencies in June for the first time in three months. Both South Africa and Russia are being hit hard by what appears to be the Delta variant, with Durban last week <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/28\/africa\/south-africa-lockdown-covid-intl\/index.html\">announcing a strict lockdown<\/a> to curb a rapid increase in cases and Moscow reporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/russia-reports-record-covid-deaths-for-5th-straight-day-amid-surging-delta-cases-2478398\">record daily cases<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p><p><strong>Vaccination rates to determine the victors and losers in EM?<\/strong> \u201cAchievements in terms of vaccination will increasingly be a differentiation factor among emerging markets in the second half [of 2021],\u201d said one EM strategist.<\/p><p><strong>The most vulnerable:<\/strong> South Africa and Colombia are likely to see the most pressure on their currencies as the combination of rising cases, low interest rates and higher state spending puts portfolio flows to the test, according to an interest-rate and currency analyst. South Africa has only vaccinated 5% of its population, and at the current rate, would have to wait until 2023 to inoculate 50% of its population, the percentage that experts say is needed to combat Delta. Colombia has also only 11% of its people vaccinated.<\/p><p><strong>The fortunate:<\/strong> Chile, China, Israel, the UAE and the Central Eastern European countries, which have vaccinated almost half of their citizens, the percentage that experts say is needed to combat Delta, Bank of America said last week.
