Asal knocked out world no.1 Ali Farag in the quarters and second seed Tarek Momen in the semi, while El Shorbagy beat New Zealand\u2019s Paul Coll yesterday to secure his place in the final.<\/p><p><strong>IN THE HOUSE THIS WEEK-<\/strong><\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>MPs have at least two weeks to go before they\u2019re allowed out for summer <\/strong><strong>vacation <\/strong>\u2014 and a packed legislative agenda to keep them busy until then.<\/p><p><strong>On the agenda for today: A bumper World Bank loan for the national health system:<\/strong> MPs will also today discuss taking <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/816b6325-e449-4c28-83db-0e2a0c501413\">a USD 400 mn loan<\/a> from the World Bank\u2019s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development to support the rollout of the government\u2019s national health ins. system.<\/p><p><strong>Also:<\/strong><strong> SCC to get veto power over international rulings?<\/strong> The House <a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/2819255.aspx\">will<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/2819255.aspx\">discuss<\/a> in plenary session draft amendments that would give the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) the authority to rule on the local implementation of international court and arbitration rulings. The changes could, among other things, give the prime minister the authority to ask the SCC to rule on international verdicts that the government believes are unconstitutional. The House Legislative Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jjfboi\">approved the proposed changes<\/a> earlier this month.<\/p><p><strong>Tomorrow:<\/strong> The long-awaited <strong>Sovereign Sukuk Act<\/strong> is up for a final vote tomorrow, paving the way for the issuance of our maiden sharia-compliant bonds on local and international debt markets.<\/p><p><strong>Crackdown on civil servants linked to terrorism:<\/strong> The bill that would allow <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/00e2af73-10ae-42d6-9c1c-b34a31a79bb1\">civil servants to be<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/00e2af73-10ae-42d6-9c1c-b34a31a79bb1\">automatically dismissed<\/a> for having ties to the banned Muslim Brotherhood is up for a final vote tomorrow. Egypt came second to the UAE, which received USD 19.9 bn in FDI throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top recipients make up a whopping 95% of total FDI inflows pumped into the region: <\/strong>UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Lebanon, respectively, received a combined USD 38.5 bn of FDI in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business, financial services and software snatched up the most investments: <\/strong>The three sectors respectively accounted for 50% of the total investments in the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt was the leading FDI destination in the region for <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a4e2c7a0-1545-4c76-8450-24cb3289251b\">five consecutive years<\/a><\/strong>, landing investment of some USD 124.5 bn between January 2015 and December 2019. and described Egypt and Sudan\u2019s recent push for a UN resolution as part of a \u201cwell-orchestrated scheme to undermine the African Union-led process.\u201d In <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mfaethiopia\/status\/1408320632345989124\/photo\/1\">a letter<\/a> to the council, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry called on world powers to encourage Cairo and Khartoum to continue the AU-led negotiations and accused the two downstream countries of disrupting the GERD talks nine times.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d2fe3d99-13aa-4e0d-942a-9b065428f511\">Egypt<\/a><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/02216f10-5239-4fd7-bd8a-da6f637ac271\">Sudan<\/a><\/strong><strong> have been drumming up international support<\/strong> and are likely to submit a draft resolution to the Security Council in the coming days in an effort to pressure world powers to weigh in on the issue. The Arab League has also called on the council to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/457824d2-9647-4283-b019-22d96eefe696\">hold an urgent session<\/a> on GERD, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cfdcf87c-7b78-4f7a-a089-28c886b7b980\">following an emergency meeting<\/a> called for by Egypt and Sudan earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The clock is ticking:<\/strong> Ethiopia will resume filling the dam\u2019s reservoir when the rainy season begins next month, with or without an agreement. This has Egypt and Sudan concerned that their supplies of the Nile\u2019s water will be curtailed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>War drums beating?<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry rejected what he described as \u201cprovocative\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/arabic.rt.com\/middle_east\/1245733-%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%87%D8%B2%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%84%D8%AD%D9%84-%D8%B9%D8%B3%D9%83%D8%B1%D9%8A-%D9%84%D9%82%D8%B6%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%B3%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%87%D8%B6%D8%A9-%D9%88%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1-%D9%84%D9%86-%D8%AA%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%B7%D9%8A%D8%B9-%D8%AA%D8%AF%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%B1%D9%87\/\">remarks<\/a> by an Ethiopian army general and reiterated that while Cairo is pursuing a peaceful resolution, Egypt is ready to defend its interests. He made the remarks during an interview with El Hekaya\u2019s Amr Adib on Friday night (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MnjPVhdibng\">watch, runtime 2:24<\/a>). Shoukry was speaking in response to comments made by an Ethiopian general who told Russian media that Egypt will not be able to solve the problem militarily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And what of last week\u2019s talks?<\/strong> Irrigation ministers from Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan held three-way talks on Thursday and Friday \u2014 the first meeting since negotiations reached a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fed1a86a-7b61-41be-828c-d1a714e4de03\">deadlock in April<\/a>. We still haven\u2019t heard anything from any of the parties about how the talks went.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt, China talk GERD and cooperation:<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his counterpart Wang Yi discussed in a phone call on Friday the latest updates on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, as well as boosting mutual efforts to combat covid-19, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MFAEgypt\/posts\/117543023888886\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IN OTHER DIPLO NEWS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>No progress on Egypt-Turkey rapprochement -Shoukry:<\/strong> Negotiations on mending Egyptian-Turkish have been at a standstill since the two sides <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a0d38d0e-5721-425a-af1b-fc0d65a3bfba\">held talks in Cairo in May<\/a>, Shoukry told El Hekaya (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q-CoRbSM7oM\">watch, runtime: 21:23<\/a>) on Friday. He has also served as the bank\u2019s chief risk and operations officers and from 1995 through 2001 was head of research and then MD for asset management at EFG Hermes. We have the full story in this morning\u2019s news well above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shoukry is confident that the council is going to act:<\/strong> Egypt is in talks with permanent missions to the UN in New York to call on the Security Council to hold an urgent session to discuss the dispute at the earliest in a bid to reach a binding agreement with Addis Ababa on the dam\u2019s filling and operation, Shoukry said (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=028FqtEPUH4\">watch, runtime: 3:44<\/a>). A majority vote from the nine-member council on a draft resolution that\u2019s being drawn up by Cairo and Khartoum is assured, Shoukry said, noting that he could visit New York during the second week of July to talk GERD with the UN Security Council (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PnKaMvBCarY\">watch, runtime: 2:35<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A final attempt at diplomacy?<\/strong> Ethiopia would further demonstrate \u201ca lack of political will\u201d should it refuse to adhere to a Security Council resolution, and would push the international community to take action, according to Shoukry (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n2w1l9HfDro\">watch, runtime: 1:56<\/a>).
