Fingers crossed summer is equally kind to us.<\/p><p><strong>THINGS WE DON\u2019T APPRECIATE ENOUGH #1- <\/strong>The amazing breadth of world-class travel destinations here in Egypt. As many of us gnash our teeth about the prospect of another summer spent entirely here at home, we were reminded by none other than <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/87e259cc-36b0-4583-b3b4-dfea0883eb41\">the Financial Times<\/a><\/strong> that folks from around the world have our fair country on their bucket list. The latest reminder: <strong>Somabay is one of the best places in the world to learn to wing-foil<\/strong>, a brand new water sport that\u2019s a cross between windsurfing and snowboarding. The salmon-colored paper gives a tip of the hat to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebreakers-somabay.com\/\">Breakers Diving and Surfing Lodge<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/kempinski.com\">Kempinski<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>THINGS WE DON\u2019T APPRECIATE ENOUGH #2- <\/strong>We\u2019re kind of down on Big Oil here at Enterprise World Headquarters (climate change and all\u2026), but we still need to purchase petrol every so often if we want to keep our wheels rolling. It\u2019s in that context that we think <strong>Total deserves a tip of the hat for the number of women it now employs<\/strong> in front-line roles at filling stations, jobs that were previously 100% the purview of men.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Are we going to get a resolution on the Ever Given today?<\/strong> The Ismailia Economic Court will hold today a hearing in the USD 550 mn Ever Given compensation case filed by the Suez Canal Authority against the container ship\u2019s owners for its six-day blockage of the canal in March. The court had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0febcf1b-ab90-4222-9013-a28a224d6af5\">postponed the hearing last month<\/a> for the second time to allow settlement talks between the two sides to continue.<\/p><p><strong>The SCA and Shoei Kisen\u2019s ins. company have been at loggerheads<\/strong> over who should be held responsible for the incident and how much compensation should be paid out to Egypt. The authority has slashed its demands from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3eb957c5-fd2a-457b-8f63-a3f5d2e7093e\">USD 916 mn<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5294b4e3-f922-4ba7-b12a-5d7fc75f3bd0\">USD 550 mn<\/a>, but the ins. companies are reportedly only willing to only pay out USD 150 mn. The Ever Given\u2019s ins. company, UK Club, is now hopeful about a positive resolution in the case, saying <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ea07d9b0-6120-41be-9261-eecc78483f5a\">last week<\/a> that it \u201cis currently engaged in serious and constructive negotiations with the SCA regarding the authority\u2019s claim arising from the grounding of the Ever Given.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein is in town today for a two-day <\/strong><strong>visit <\/strong>during which he\u2019s set to meet President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=17062021&amp;id=551a707d-992b-4980-8c5a-e347329d148e\">Al Shorouk<\/a> reports. This is his first visit to North Africa since he became Malaysia\u2019s foreign minister in March 2020. President Abdal Fattah El Sisi discussed economic ties and investment with Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on a conference call three days ago, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/337344924420909\">Ittihadiya statement<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Ethiopia has \u201ctemporarily\u201d scrapped visas on arrival and e-visas for passengers of all <\/strong><strong>nationalities. <\/strong>The ban came into effect on Friday, EgyptAir said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EGYPTAIR\/posts\/4710908872258575\">statement<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>HAPPENING THIS WEEK?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Expect the first of some 40 mn doses of China\u2019s Sinovac jab to roll off the production line at Vacsera as early as this week. <\/strong>Health Minister Hala Zayed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/63370699-a5aa-4b7e-bbde-a2714409d39e\">said last week<\/a> that the first bottles would be ready to go \u201cwithin days\u201d and would be subject to quality testing ahead of a rollout as early as August. As many as 3 mn doses could be made this year.<\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-03\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>M&amp;A WATCH- It seems that Vodafone Egypt could be close to wrapping up <\/strong><strong>due diligence on Bee + <\/strong><strong>Masary<\/strong>, after sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=19062021&amp;id=dffcebcb-ae28-4f7b-9ae9-01ffaa4e983a\">Al Shorouk<\/a> that the company would finish \u201cwithin days.\u201d The telecoms giant <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/42db6645-da56-49c4-a284-ed39e05306b4\">signed an MoU<\/a> with NBFS player Ebtikar in February that could see it acquire 20% stakes in fintech firms Bee and Masary. Ebtikar, which confirmed to us earlier this month it is gearing up for <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e2288438-1757-4a28-b7a4-8060a362753b\">an IPO as early as 4Q2021<\/a>, holds a 72% stake in Masary and owns 60% of Bee. Bank of Egypt\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) left interest rates <\/strong><strong>unchanged for a fifth consecutive meeting on Thursday<\/strong> as it looks to preempt a possible rise in inflation on the back of spiraling global commodity prices. Overnight deposit and lending rates remain at 8.25% and 9.25% respectively, while the main operation and discount rates were kept unchanged at 8.75%, the bank said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/MPC-Press-Release-17-June-2021.pdf\">statement<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/MPC-Press-Release-17-June-2021.pdf\">(pdf)<\/a> following the meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The move was forecast by all <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1f456c5c-ed19-4468-bccf-817c0fa49938\">11 analysts and economists<\/a><\/strong> we polled prior to the meeting, who cited local inflationary pressures driven by rising commodity prices abroad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The CBE said the hold is \u201cconsistent with\u201d achieving its inflation target of 7% (\u00b12 )<\/strong> on average by 4Q2022 and price stability in the medium term, the statement read. Egypt's \u201cleading indicators point towards a sustained momentum of recovery across the board,\u201d with global economic conditions \u201cexpected to remain accommodative and supportive of economic activity over the medium term,\u201d the CBE added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic inflation accelerated at its fastest rate this year in May<\/strong>, with the annual headline rate rising <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a19da710-1330-415c-8993-290f63133dcb\">to 4.8%<\/a> due to a jump in food costs and an unfavorable base effect. This comes after an unexpected decline to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0d82773c-16b8-4e19-956b-28cf55f425a6\">4.1% in April<\/a>, with rates holding steady at <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/91d91bf8-2519-46d6-a33e-b0495cc892c0\">4.5% in March<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2ad47058-a1df-4f79-a48e-1b39c17beb79\">February<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The central bank expects inflation to pick up in the coming months:<\/strong> \u201cInflation readings are expected to continue to be affected by unfavorable base effects in the near term,\u201d the bank said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cause: Surging energy and food prices?<\/strong> Global oil prices recently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/79faa360-ddbe-4932-8b4a-83a14baa187e\">hit highs not seen<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/79faa360-ddbe-4932-8b4a-83a14baa187e\">since October 2018<\/a>, and a persistent combination of tight supply and rising demand is leading a growing number of analysts to forecast USD 100\/bbl oil. Meanwhile, food prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8b5f4b4d-cbf8-4269-af2c-c94063197bbb\">accelerated at their fastest rate in more than a decade<\/a> in May, something to policymakers here pay careful attention given we\u2019re the world\u2019s largest importer of wheat. This comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/882be639-c60c-4633-9fc2-fbbbde4480c5\">droughts in South America<\/a> tighten the global supply of grains including corn and sugar, which will increase the cost of livestock. But farmers from the US to Russia are said to be expecting a good Northern Hemisphere harvest, which could balance out the impact somewhat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s not get too carried away, though: Few are forecasting average inflation to rise <\/strong><strong>above the central bank\u2019s target rate<\/strong> \u2014 or even into the upper bound. Capital Economics sees<sup><\/sup> annual inflation peaking at 6% in September, EFG Hermes\u2019 Mohamed Abu Basha sees <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1f456c5c-ed19-4468-bccf-817c0fa49938\">5.5-6.0% inflation in December<\/a>, and HC Securities\u2019 Monette Doss has forecast an<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1f456c5c-ed19-4468-bccf-817c0fa49938\">average 6.8%<\/a> through the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The hold means that Egypt continues to have the world\u2019s highest real interest rate<\/strong> and maintain its position as the most lucrative carry trade for foreign investors \u2014 a core objective of the central bank as it looks to preserve a key source of hard currency. EGP-denominated bonds have risen 5% so far this year, making Egypt the best emerging-market performer after Argentina and South Africa, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-17\/egypt-holds-interest-rates-to-guard-against-global-price-surge?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> Barclays indexes. Total foreign holdings of Egyptian debt stood at between USD 28-29 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/32c7b2cc-95aa-4cb6-962f-496eade1e38d\">at the end of May<\/a>, a strong recovery after declining during the emerging markets sell-off back in 2020 during the early days of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Serious inflation kicking off in other emerging markets may force other countries to raise rates<\/strong> and the global trend towards monetary tightening has left the central bank \u201cno room for any cuts for the time being,\u201d Israa Ahmed, an economist at Pharos, told us. Brazil and Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/099753bc-3ab6-4268-bf3a-2db60db172b0\">are now hiking interest rates<\/a> in response to inflation, which has risen to multi-year highs on the back of the global commodities boom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And emerging markets are keeping a close eye on developments across the Atlantic: <\/strong>The Federal Reserve\u2019s indication last week that it could <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/171abcbc-6a2e-44d9-a4e8-12073398c8ab\">move to raise interest rates and scale back<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/171abcbc-6a2e-44d9-a4e8-12073398c8ab\">its stimulus program earlier than expected<\/a> could put pressure on flows into emerging market debt. The program will come into effect for three years as of July for most eligible industries, while the automotive sector subsidy program will run for seven years. Further incentives include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A <\/strong><strong>50% <\/strong><strong>boost in subsidies<\/strong> for exports headed to the African market and subsidize up to 80% of shipping fees;<\/li>\n<li><strong>A 50% bump up from the basic rate<\/strong> for Upper Egypt, border governorates, the Rubiki industrial zone and Damietta furniture city;<\/li>\n<li><strong>An additional 2% subsidy rate<\/strong> for exports bearing an Egyptian brand;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Projects established in the Suez Canal Economic Zone<\/strong> will be eligible for the program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This comes as the central bank prepares to launch <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/171abcbc-6a2e-44d9-a4e8-12073398c8ab\">a new export credit risk guarantee<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/171abcbc-6a2e-44d9-a4e8-12073398c8ab\">company<\/a><\/strong><strong> in the coming weeks<\/strong>, which will protect Egyptian businesses exporting to other parts of Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increasing exports front and center in new structural reform program:<\/strong> The government has recently been talking up its ambitions to revive Egypt\u2019s non-oil exports, which despite the EGP float in 2016 have remained anemic.
