The aim is to block large firms from dodging tax by booking profits in low-tax jurisdictions, making tax havens a thing of the past. The agreement could generate hundreds of bns of USD for governments.<\/p><p><strong>Just because the G7 thinks it\u2019s a good idea doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s done: <\/strong>Look for more talks to take place at the G20 meeting in July.<\/p><p><strong>Wait, but what about FAANG?<\/strong> The big five tech companies (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google) are not being hit with an explicit digital services tax just yet, though the new agreement is expected to lengthen their tax bills by virtue of their size, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-05\/g-7-reaches-historic-deal-on-minimum-global-corporate-tax-rate?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Technical details on how exactly tech companies could be taxed are expected to be on the G-20\u2019s agenda this summer.<\/p><p><strong>The global business press don\u2019t have many negative things to say about the news:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a308bbff-5926-47a1-9202-6263e667511e\">The Financial Times<\/a> calls it \u201can historic agreement,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-05\/g-7-reaches-historic-deal-on-minimum-global-corporate-tax-rate?srnd=premium-middle-east&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> a \u201clandmark [pact],\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/05\/g-7-nations-reach-historic-deal-on-global-tax-reform.html\">CNBC<\/a> a \u201ca significant development in global taxation.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Other international stories <\/strong>that should probably be on your radar:<\/p><ul>\n<li><strong>A mega LBO stateside:<\/strong> A consortium of private equity firms will purchase a majority stake in medical supplier Medline Industries in a transaction that values the company at more than USD 30 bn, making it one of the biggest leveraged buyouts since the global financial crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/group-including-blackstone-nears-deal-to-buy-medline-for-over-30-billion-11622910788?mod=hp_lead_pos2\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported last night. <strong>The story is everywhere this morning<\/strong>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3993dcba-4cbc-4564-a22e-8c36992589b2\">the Financial Times<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/05\/blackstone-group-nears-a-30-billion-deal-to-buy-medline-report-says.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google plans to make it harder for advertisers to track Android users<\/strong>, following a move by rival Apple, which <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/be99ed9c-43d1-4f26-ac45-7fbf4e460475\">recently strengthened privacy protections<\/a> in response to increasing consumer concerns over how tech companies use our data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/03\/google-will-restrict-use-of-android-advertising-id-to-opted-in-users-.html\">CNBC<\/a> reports. id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) can afford to cut rates by as much as 50 b<\/strong><strong>ps at its meeting <\/strong><strong>later this month<\/strong>, Goldman Sachs MENA economist Farouk Soussa told Bloomberg (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2021-06-04\/egyptian-inflation-slows-gives-scope-for-rate-cut-video?sref=mmeFTDW1\">watch, runtime 7:12<\/a>). \u201cWe see a very strong case for rate cuts in the near term, as in June. That is predicated on the fact that Egypt has the highest real rates within EM,\u201d Soussa said. The main operation and discount rates currently stand at 8.75%, while overnight deposit and lending rates are at 8.25% and 9.25% respectively. The CBE left rates on hold for a fourth consecutive meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6c5d1ef9-6305-4119-a57e-4a6f45c6f2d5\">in April<\/a> to maintain attractive real rates and in anticipation of rising inflation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Low inflation gives policymakers cover to lower rates:<\/strong> Inflation slowed against expectations <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0d82773c-16b8-4e19-956b-28cf55f425a6\">in April<\/a>, thanks to a favorable base effect that offset a rise in monthly prices. Annual urban inflation fell to 4.1% in April from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/91d91bf8-2519-46d6-a33e-b0495cc892c0\">4.5% in March<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/5\/202151094538_CAPMAS-04-2021.pdf\">the national rate (pdf)<\/a> fell 40 bps to 4.4%. The CBE could look to cut rates to stimulate spending, though an anticipated spike in inflation later in the year as a rise in global commodity prices trickles down to local products makes a hold more likely, analysts previously told us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And a rate cut won\u2019t harm Egypt\u2019s all important carry trade<\/strong>, Soussa said, suggesting that the CBE could potentially afford to be a bit more aggressive approach. \u201cReal yields in Egypt are currently around 8-9% on a forward-looking basis. \u2026 There is plenty of scope there for those rates to come down without affecting the relative attractiveness of rates in Egypt,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foreign investors in Egyptian debt have provided an important source of inflows <\/strong>as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/146743c8-8fc0-46d6-ab09-1788aff56eff\">tourism receipts<\/a> and FDI contracted in lock step with the rest of the world after the start of the pandemic. Only British or Irish nationals or those who have residence rights will be allowed to enter the UK from Egypt, EgyptAir said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3w10z0w\">statement<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/uk-adds-seven-countries-travel-red-list-including-egypt-sri-lanka-2021-06-03\/\">Reuters<\/a> also took note of the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why now?<\/strong> Although the government didn\u2019t directly explain the decision to place Egypt on the red list, it appears to have been motivated by concerns over the country\u2019s vulnerability to new variants of the virus. A government-backed travel health body <a href=\"https:\/\/travelhealthpro.org.uk\/country\/71\/egypt#COVID-19\">said<\/a> there is a \u201chigh risk of exposure\u201d to covid in Egypt, and advised against travel due to an \u201cemerging covid-19 variant\u201d in the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some will still come in spite of the quarantine, right? <\/strong>Sure, some tourists desperate for sun might shrug off the inconvenience of a 10-day quarantine on the way back home. But most will flinch at having to pay the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/booking-and-staying-in-a-quarantine-hotel-when-you-arrive-in-england\">GBP 1,750+ charge<\/a>. That makes Egypt an extremely expensive destination for UK holidaymakers, so we can likely say goodbye to tourists from that corner of the world until we\u2019re moved off the bad list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the plus side, we may be getting the Russians back in just a few days. <\/strong>Flights to Red Sea resorts are likely to resume \u201cin the coming days\u201d following a six-year hiatus, Aeroflot CEO Mikhail Poluboyarinov said in an interview on Friday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/ekonomika\/11562323\">Tass<\/a>.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>But then again, we might not:<\/strong> \u201cWe understand that there is a high degree of readiness for the reopening of two more destinations [to Egypt], Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, <strong>but we do not know yet when and how this will happen<\/strong>,\u201d Poluboyarinov told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russian-charter-flights-egypt-resume-coming-days-ifx-2021-06-04\/\">Reuters<\/a>. We\u2019re keeping our fingers crossed for June, or at least for <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3374da94-62a9-49ab-be30-3e93e44241e8\">some point in the summer season<\/a>. The industry has been biting its nails and waiting for the big day since the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/38a0aa7e-6bfb-4d8a-b4a6-fa2b37a2301b\">plan was announced in April<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3374da94-62a9-49ab-be30-3e93e44241e8\">repeated delays<\/a> since the agreement was announced mean we won\u2019t be holding our breaths.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Direct flights between Egypt and Libya could also be making a return: <\/strong>A Civil Aviation Ministry delegation inspected Benina, Mitiga and Misrata international airports in Libya Wednesday, ahead of the potential resumption of direct flights to Cairo, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.aawsat.com\/home\/article\/3009106\/egyptian-delegation-inspects-libya%E2%80%99s-airports-resume-direct-flights\">Asharq Al Awsat<\/a> reports. The program had initially aimed to convert 250k cars to run on natural gas by 2023 but is now reaching for the more ambitious target of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/35e33c41-388d-49c0-9bcc-5fc5772c6569\">450k<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public transport is also getting a natgas facelift: <\/strong>Some nearly 2.3k public buses in Cairo and Alexandria will be converted to run on natural gas at a total cost of EGP 1.2 bn under a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/147545274082568\">agreement<\/a> signed between the ministries of oil, local development and military production as well as the public transport authorities of both cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taqa Arabia<\/strong> \u2014 a key player in the coming rollout of natgas infrastructure \u2014<strong> just got a EGP 916 <\/strong><strong>mn loan from the National Bank of Egypt<\/strong> to help finance the construction of natgas filling stations, the bank said in <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/NBE-TAQA-EN.pdf\">a press release (pdf)<\/a>. Taqa\u2019s Master Gas subsidiary will use the finance to build 40 new filling stations in a number of governorates, to support the growing shift to natural gas vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The move comes as part of a wider plan: <\/strong>Taqa Arabia \u2014 along with state companies Cargas and Gastec \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2d383c65-dda0-4b36-8860-c82fa7b99e0d\">working to expand the country\u2019s network of natgas filling stations<\/a> as part of the government\u2019s plan to lessen the reliance on gasoline to power the nation\u2019s vehicles. Taqa <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b78d6f10-5c2d-40a4-aef9-3e53fb3a5466\">announced earlier this year<\/a> that it would invest EGP 3.6 bn in expanding its number of nat gas stations to 180 by 2023. The company will spend EGP 800 mn to construct 40 stations in 2021, EGP 1.2 bn on 60 stations in 2022 and EGP 1.6 bn on 80 stations in 2023. The company currently operates 23 natgas stations, CEO Pakinam Kafafi said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taqa Petroleum will also use part of the facility to build a petroleum storage terminal <\/strong>with a capacity of 25.6 mn liters in Alexandria, to \u201csecure the state\u2019s petroleum reserves and prevent local market\u2019s shortages,\u201d TAQA Arabia CFO Peter Mofeed said. The state-owned bank will also benefit from the facility, which will see it work with the EBRD to improve climate corporate governance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the third loan the NBE has landed from the EBRD under a green economy financing facility<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/2017\/ebrd-eu-and-european-partners-support-green-investments-in-egypt.html\">set up by the EBRD, the European Investment Bank and the French Development Agency in 2017<\/a> to channel finance to green projects in Egypt. high speeds, only for Rabie to yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SuezCanalAuthorityEG\/photos\/a.125151839125856\/460405718933798\/?_rdc=1&_rdr\">accuse<\/a> the ship\u2019s captain for being solely responsible for the incident.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UK Club and the ship\u2019s owner, Shoei Kisen, have said nothing to suggest that they will meet the SCA\u2019s revised claim.<\/strong> Shoei Kisen reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5294b4e3-f922-4ba7-b12a-5d7fc75f3bd0\">offered to pay the authority USD 150 mn<\/a>, less than a third of what the Some 1.5k housing units were destroyed during the 11-day conflict and 17k are partially damaged, while another 1.5k units are beyond repair, the Gaza\u2019s housing ministry said previously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi had earlier pledged <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/039377ac-4798-45c2-8c72-33391611063c\">USD 500 mn<\/a><\/strong><strong> for the reconstruction<\/strong> of properties and infrastructure in Gaza.
