Staff will need to be in branches 30 minutes before doors open to the public and stick around 30 minutes after.<\/p><p><strong>We\u2019re still waiting for news about whether we\u2019ll be seeing new covid restrictions <\/strong>brought in to prevent a spike in cases during Ramadan. Government sources <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3a6944c9-147e-4879-925f-c5ff4f1f6d49\">told local media<\/a> last week that authorities could move to close public places, ban prayer in the streets and reduce working hours at government facilities if cases continue to rise.<\/p><p><strong>So, when do we eat? <\/strong>Maghreb prayers are at 6:21pm in the capital city on Tuesday. You\u2019ll have until 3:59am to finish sohour that night.<\/p><p><strong>IT\u2019S A BIG WEEK FOR- Foreign affairs. <\/strong>The nation\u2019s diplomats look set to own the news agenda for much of this week. Khargeya and the Defense Ministry are pushing ahead with an aggressive bid to deepen ties with upstream nations as the wrestling match with Ethiopia over GERD reaches a new pitch. Production will take place at two facilities, one capable of cranking out 20 mn doses, and the other producing 60 mn doses a year. The ministry had previously said production capacity would <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/03ce2265-7c1a-4c16-8f49-ea5d1489af0b\">range between 20-60 mn doses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re expecting to receive an additional 900k-1 mn doses of Sinopharm in the coming days<\/strong>, in addition to the 680k doses we\u2019ve received so far, Zayed said. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/603294d7-098e-48c7-9570-eb8b2b70a030\">said last week<\/a> that another 400k doses would soon arrive on our shores, without specifying which vaccine it would be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gov\u2019t to set up new vaccine centers + extend operating hours to clear bottlenecks: <\/strong>Egypt should have 350 operational vaccination centers nationwide by the end of this week, up from the 169 right now, the minister said. The ministry is also extending vaccination centers\u2019 operating times until 10 pm during Ramadan, Zayed added. The ministry had originally targeted having <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/603294d7-098e-48c7-9570-eb8b2b70a030\">339 facilities up and running at the beginning of last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some 1.1 mn citizens have so far registered to receive the vaccine through the government\u2019s online portal<\/strong>, Zayed said yesterday. It is unknown how many people have <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/56bbf6b0-9dcb-4b2d-9436-44f6f07c8fc8\">signed up in person<\/a> at hospitals. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 209,677 confirmed cases of covid-19. The ministry also reported 43 new deaths, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 12,405.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cases have been rising over the past five weeks<\/strong> from the most recent low of 581 on 7 March. This has accelerated markedly this month, increasing from 699 on 31 March to 801 yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The global vaccine divide:<\/strong> The World Health Organization has described the inequitable distribution of coronavirus vaccines between rich and poor nations as <strong>a \"shocking imbalance,\"<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-56698854\">the<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-56698854\">BBC<\/a> quoted Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as saying during a news conference on Friday. \"On average in high-income countries, almost one in four people have received a covid-19 vaccine. The Finance Ministry\u2019s focus on longer-term issuance has also paid off, with the country\u2019s debt profile <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a5aae968-5b2f-4ad1-a71b-3fcef02a764d\">now meeting the minimum maturity<\/a> for inclusion in the index.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Say hello to more capital flows:<\/strong> Reinclusion could see up to USD 4.8 bn in inflows enter Egyptian bonds and perhaps a 5% appreciation of the EGP against the greenback, Rand Merchant Bank economist Neville Mandimika <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a5aae968-5b2f-4ad1-a71b-3fcef02a764d\">said recently<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll be waiting for at least another six months:<\/strong> The bank will be out with an update on whether the bonds have met the grade in the next six months, it said last week. The Ever Given has been moored in the Great Bitter Lake since it was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dadbd6d3-070d-4c92-a080-62ebf8ceced1\">dislodged at the end of March<\/a> while investigators assess the ship and try and ascertain what caused it to veer into the bank of the canal<\/p>\n<p><strong>A nine-figure price tag?<\/strong> Though Rabie stopped short of naming a figure during the interview, he said last week that the authority could be chasing insurers and the ship\u2019s Japanese owner, Shoei Kisen, for as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c873a51b-96d2-42c3-a3e6-b8bc9b83a7b6\">USD 1 bn in compensation<\/a>. This includes the lost revenues, which have been estimated to be around USD 15 mn per day and the cost of repairing the damage done to the canal .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still no signs of an agreement:<\/strong> One advisor to the authority leading the investigation said at the start of the month that an agreement could be reached in just 3-4 days. Egypt has reportedly been in talks with Shoei Kisen for a week to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3e6af08d-5696-4f80-bbb9-9f3cb4a0e816\">settle the issue outside of court<\/a>, but the two sides are yet to reach an agreement. This will be our third entry with Tetra Pak, on top of our juice and cheese products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We're starting a full range of milk products, starting with normal <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usdairy.com\/news-articles\/uht-milk-what-is-ultra-high-temperature-milk\">UHT milk<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Then, we\u2019ll follow that with a new product launch each month, starting with flavored milk, followed by whipping cream and cookies and cream.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new production line is designed to continue growing the company\u2019s portfolio<\/strong>, after starting out as a cheese manufacturer and then having expanded into the juice and bakery segment. We have a vision of making Domty a real food company and we\u2019re eager to lock down a bigger portion of households\u2019 grocery expenditure. And I think we\u2019ll do that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve definitely shifted our expansion strategy since covid-19 began.<\/strong> If you had asked me a year or a year and a half ago where we would expand, I would have said our main focus would be on-the-go products, given the success we\u2019ve had in the bakery segment and with the cheese sandwich product we launched. But the situation now \u2014 especially with schools and universities either being closed or operating on a hybrid learning basis throughout the past year \u2014 required a change in strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re shifting back again into products to be consumed at home<\/strong>, and we\u2019re in talks with Tetra Pak again to add some other products for at-home consumption to our portfolio. There\u2019s been a lot of uncertainty and we believe we\u2019re going to have to live with covid-19 impacting our lives in the same way for at least this year and next. Unfortunately, our on-the-go products had brought us great success, but current circumstances mean we have to shift away from them for a bit. Before covid, we had invested a lot in our three bakery lines, two of which we had fully utilized before the pandemic hit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course, when things go back to normal, we intend to bring back our investments in on-the-go products, which I think are much more profitable in Egypt<\/strong> \u2014 and the room for innovation is much bigger. The success we had with our cheese sandwich was a testament to the potential that consumer level holds. It\u2019s a really, really big market so we\u2019ll come back to it when things stabilize and normalize again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capex borrowing is attractive now, but the market demand isn\u2019t there yet to justify it:<\/strong> Domty is working with Tetra Pak on a facility for the new production line, which includes them giving us the machinery. Overall, the interest rate environment now is very attractive for capex borrowing, but the market is not attractive. The banking sector in Egypt is doing a really great job, and the Central Bank of Egypt has successfully brought down interest rates over the past two years and continues to give support to the industry and the business environment. But unfortunately, the pandemic just means the market is still not great for new investments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a popular myth that being an FMCG player means that a slowdown isn\u2019t going to affect your business.<\/strong> It\u2019s true that people don\u2019t stop eating or drinking in an economic crisis, but we\u2019re already playing on very slim margins, so when you have a decline in sales \u2014 even if it\u2019s something like 5 or 6% \u2014 it has an outsized impact on overall profitability. It\u2019s still by and large a \u201csafe\u201d sector, but the smallest decline in sales can really be felt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Export markets have also had their own set of challenges:<\/strong> We export around 6% of our total output \u2014 mainly cheese to Arab countries, Africa, and Europe, where Egyptian expats are living. Our main export markets are Libya, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Russia. All of these countries have their own challenges right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part of the problem with exports is also that we as Egyptian companies have a problem with marketing our products abroad.<\/strong> All the food companies in Egypt are focused almost entirely on the local market, but the local market dynamics have changed significantly in the last 10-12 years, between the 2011 revolution to the EGP float and now covid-19. So these changing dynamics mean that export markets are a secondary option, which means that companies aren\u2019t really investing in proper marketing or setting up a real sales fleet on the ground like we all do here in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of all the problems that industry faces here in Egypt \u2014 some of which have existed for years \u2014 I think FMCG\u2019s biggest problem is the idea of imitation.<\/strong> There\u2019s no proper mapping from the government on where to invest, or how. So new entrants to the market just see what\u2019s successful and decide to imitate it, and the end result is that some sectors in FMCG are really crowded, while others are a bit lighter. Four or five years ago, we had two companies that IPOed on the EGX \u2014 one of which was Domty \u2014 and we had maybe 12 brands of white cheese in the market at the time. After these two successful IPOs, we now have 24 brands of white cheese, just because other companies saw the success of these companies in making it to an IPO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER INVESTMENT NEWS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emaar has its eyes on expanding operations in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, and <\/strong><strong>Pakistan<\/strong>, CEO Mohammed Alabbar told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/323em9m\">Al Arabiya<\/a>. Emaar\u2019s sales more than doubled y-o-y in the first three months of the year to USD 1.63 bn from USD 680 mn. \u201cThe numbers are promising, despite the difficulties still faced by the hotel and retail industries,\u201d Alabbar said. The Emaar boss had previously called Egypt the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/299a56ed-13b3-4f2f-a1cc-41e3166fae81\">favorite<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/299a56ed-13b3-4f2f-a1cc-41e3166fae81\">investment destination<\/a> and announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3270d822-b28d-49ae-9cfc-6fce09649e6f\">double its Egypt operations<\/a> to constitute 30% of the company\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>French outsourcing and consultancy firm <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/webhelp.com\/\">Webhelp<\/a><\/strong><strong> will invest EGP 200 mn in <\/strong><strong>Egypt over the next three years<\/strong>, the Communications Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/mcit.gov.eg\/ar\/Media_Center\/Press_Room\/Press_Releases\/63302\">said yesterday<\/a> after the Information Technology Industry Development Agency signed an agreement with the firm. The government had previously targeted ending the year with 550 natgas stations, which would have required establishing an additional 325 stations this year, El Molla <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/29ac4d42-692f-4871-a320-b50e0f52e684\">said previously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taqa Arabia\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taqa.com.eg\/page.php?name=gas\">Master Gas<\/a><\/strong><strong> and two state-owned players are <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b78d6f10-5c2d-40a4-aef9-3e53fb3a5466\">working to expand the country\u2019s network<\/a><\/strong><strong> of natgas stations:<\/strong> Taqa, Natural Gas Vehicles Company (Cargas) and Gastec should have access to at least <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/76aa98c8-14e6-417c-ab05-e69ed5960c61\">EGP 5.3 bn in subsidized funds<\/a> available through banks to back the construction of as many as 287k stations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We could also start seeing portable refueling stations roaming around cities<\/strong>, with one of those already up and running, and nearly 10 more planned for the coming period, the minister added. Natural gas refueling facilities will also be added to a number of gasoline and diesel fuel stations, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER NATGAS NEWS- <\/strong><strong>Some 30 shipments of liquefied natural gas were reportedly exported from <\/strong><strong>Egypt's Damietta and Idku liquefaction plants in 1Q2021<\/strong>, with more in the pipeline during April, unnamed industry sources <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3dNxSfg\">said<\/a>. Saied\u2019s three-day visit to Egypt, which will wrap up today, marks the first since he assumed his position in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The United States says Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan need to wrap up GERD: <\/strong>US national security adviser Jake Sullivan brought up the talks, as well as the Tigray conflict, in a phone call with Ethiopia\u2019s deputy PM Demeke Mekonnen, the White House said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/08\/statement-by-national-security-council-spokesperson-emily-horne-on-national-security-advisor-jake-sullivans-call-with-ethiopian-deputy-prime-minister-demeke-mekonnen\/\">a statement<\/a>.
