We also have news of a transaction in the country\u2019s nascent waste management sector, as <strong>Empower<\/strong> looks to raise some EGP 400 mn through a sale of equity to unnamed investors out of the Gulf.<\/p><p><strong>It\u2019s been a really big week for M&amp;A.<\/strong> Shell <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/31bffded-092f-4f4c-9755-e585392cd8f6\">agreed<\/a> yesterday to sell its assets in the Western Desert to our friends at Egypt\u2019s Cheiron Petroleum Corporation and UK-listed Cairn Energy for up to USD 926 mn. That follows on the heels of news that the Saudi Public Investment Fund is bidding to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ccb1a651-d6f5-4d96-9a08-7fd1c549c903\">take private driller ADES International<\/a> and Banque Misr\u2019s mandatory tender offer to acquire up to 90% of CI Capital. The MTO for CI ends on Thursday and a source close to the transaction tells us that <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/97999dac-0931-46ba-8396-70766c1c9218\">Banque Misr has no intention of upping its offer price<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>We also have lots of news from the energy sector<\/strong>, including word on the kickoff of the natgas car conversion project and news from the EastMed Gas Forum.<\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORY INTERNATIONALLY<\/strong> is the Nasdaq snapping out of correction territory yesterday to rise 4% by market close, buoyed by a rally in tech stocks. The story is on the front pages of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-09\/asia-stocks-to-gain-after-tech-rebound-bonds-rise-markets-wrap?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-stocks\/nasdaq-surges-as-tech-stocks-roar-back-idUSKBN2B11CE\">Reuters<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stock-markets-dow-update-03-09-2021-11615279243?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> this morning.<\/p><p><strong>Asian markets followed Wall Street up overnight<\/strong>, but we\u2019re looking at a mixed open in Europe later this morning. Futures also suggest the Dow, the S&amp;P and Nasdaq will all open weakly in the red later today.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>It\u2019s inflation day:<\/strong> The Central Bank of Egypt and state census bureau Capmas should release February inflation figures later today. Annual headline inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d2132ef4-bbe3-4fbf-adbe-0033fb050730\">slowed in January<\/a> to its lowest level since September 2020, raising the possibility of the CBE\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee enacting a rate cut when it meets at the end of next week.<\/p><p><strong>Banks in Egypt will be able to carry out immediate interbank payments in foreign <\/strong><strong>currencies as of 22 March<\/strong> under a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/3\/RTGS-USD-PR-Updated.pdf\">central bank decision (pdf)<\/a> that aims to make FX transfers in Egypt cheaper for banks, and faster for their customers.<\/p><p><strong>Only 65% of EGX-listed companies complied with <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/87db7c53-8836-44fe-8114-5a784989d4ee\">a Financial Regulatory Authority d<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/87db7c53-8836-44fe-8114-5a784989d4ee\">irective<\/a><\/strong><strong> to include at least one woman on their board of directors by the end of 2020<\/strong>, EGX Chairman Mohamed Farid said at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifc.org\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/news_ext_content\/ifc_external_corporate_site\/news+and+events\/news\/ifc+and+partners+ring+bells+for+gender+equality+around+the+world\">virtual IFC-organized event<\/a> celebrating International Women\u2019s Day, the EGX said in <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/3\/EGX-listed-diversity-ar_09-03-2021.pdf\">a statement (pdf)<\/a> yesterday. This is an improvement from the 48% of companies that included a woman on their BoD in 2019. The deadline can be extended for up to 60 days. The firm closed its <a href=\"https:\/\/apis.pe\/press\/apis-partners-announce-final-close-of-apis-growth-fund-ii\/\">USD 550 mn Apis Partners II fund<\/a> on the eve of the covid-19 pandemic with a who\u2019s who of limited partners including global banks, insurance companies, development financial institutions, fund of funds, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and family offices from the U.S., Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia. <strong>Apis\u2019 most recent investment includes an undisclosed stake in South African digital player TymeBank<\/strong>, where <a href=\"https:\/\/apis.pe\/press\/major-benefit-to-south-africa-as-tymebank-attracts-significant-foreign-investment-from-global-investors\/\">Apis will also join the board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We sat down (virtually) for a talk with Abou Moussa about the transaction.<\/strong> Edited excerpts from our conversation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the move to Apis after an almost 15-year run with Actis?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Actis is evolving their strategy to focus on hard assets. [Editor\u2019s note: Our understanding is that this includes asset classes such as real estate, power, infrastructure and digital infrastructure.] This is certainly the right strategy for Actis. And then there\u2019s my team. I\u2019ve been leading a team of specialist financial services investors. Along with two of them who are also joining Apis, I want to continue to do that. This transition allows us to continue investing in the sector by joining forces with a market-leading specialist investor, while supporting Actis in delivering its financial services investments. This transition creates value for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the release published yesterday, Rick Philips talked about a partnership that allows<\/strong><strong> Actis to <\/strong><strong>\u201cretain\u201d your knowledge, expertise and relationships for a \u201cnumber of financial services investments.\u201d Can you unpack this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Supporting Actis and maintaining our cooperation is at the center of this transition. Actis was my \u201chome\u201d for almost 15 years, so I\u2019m really delighted that we\u2019re going to be able to continue working together. Actis\u2019 objective is to deliver in the best interest of its limited partners by having the right teams support the management of the portfolio to its natural maturity.<\/p>\n<p>While supporting Actis, I still want to continue investing in FS globally \u2014 and I want to join a talented, successful team where my team and I compliment their existing skills and track record. That\u2019s why we\u2019re joining Apis Partners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What assets are included in the co-advisory arrangement?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re talking about investments and commitments that are roughly USD 300 mn at cost, although the portfolio\u2019s current net asset valuation is higher. The assets include our investment in Fawry, the high-profile Egyptian financial services business in which Actis invested in 2019. They also include assets in some of our core markets in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, among them payment and lending businesses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just before covid hit, Apis closed a USD 550 mn fund \u2014 will you have access to dry<\/strong> <strong>powder to invest?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Absolutely. I\u2019m not leading a ring-fenced team sitting in a silo. Of course, some of my colleagues and I will be more engaged in the Actis portfolio because we know it well. But as an Apis partner, we are going to utilize Apis\u2019 resources to advise on that portfolio \u2014 and we\u2019re going to join the rest of the Apis team in managing Apis\u2019 existing portfolio and investing funds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Apis be investing in Egypt?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re definitely interested in investing here, yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have a timeline for your first transaction? Any color you can give us on your<\/strong> <strong>transaction pipeline?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nope. [laughs] Look, there\u2019s no specific allocation to any specific market. Apis is open to new ventures in Egypt, exactly as it was before my joining.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will you be opening an office in Cairo?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes. As part of the transaction, Apis is currently going through the process of opening an office in Cairo that I will run. But the team in Cairo won\u2019t be limited to working on Egyptian transactions \u2014 Apis\u2019 team works fluidly across transactions regardless of geography. So we\u2019ll be working on financial services investments in Africa, in our region, in South and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last question. What\u2019s so exciting about fintech?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For starters, it\u2019s the scale of the potential. This is driven by under-penetration in emerging markets, where you now have government financial inclusion drives, population growth and technology all pulling in the same direction. But that potential is just about as stark in developed markets. Simply put, technology is driving change in terms of distribution and how financial services reach customers. This is a global-scale opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>And secondly, it\u2019s the chance to do good. Investing in FS has a real, positive impact. Everybody benefits: It enhances the quality of life of consumers. It helps businesses grow and be more efficient and effective. The UAE has enough vaccines for its entire population, but typically only gives them out to residents. The energy connection project could set the three countries on track to becoming energy exporters in the region. Inaugurated in 2015, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyscrapercenter.com\/building\/shanghai-tower\/56\">Shanghai Tower<\/a> was designed with a twist structure that protects it from typhoons. And plans for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-hyperloop-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-future-of-transport\/#:~:text=Hyperloop%20is%20a%20new%20form,either%20above%20or%20below%20ground.\">Hyperloop transport<\/a> could soon see us traveling up to 700 mph in a floating pod inside giant low-pressure tubes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it\u2019s relevant<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Egypt is already known for its own architectural marvels (hello pyramids), but the Sisi administration\u2019s focus on infrastructure development and urbanizing desert areas means we could see modern-day ingenuity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt5079096\/\">Be Prepared to Stop<\/a><\/strong><strong> \u2014 a sobering look at the degradation of the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstate_Highway_System\">US Interstate Highway System<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/bepreparedtostop.org\/\">watch, runtime: 01:02:00<\/a>): The film\u2019s stats \u2014 accurate as of 2017 \u2014 hit hard. 42% of the major roadways in US metropolitan areas are congested every day. 70k bridges in the US are structurally deficient, but motorists in urban areas drive over bridges 200 mn times a day. 32k people die in accidents on US roads every year. It took 3.4k liters to produce 1kg of rice and a whopping 11k liters to produce a pair of jeans. This film looks at people in 20 countries seeking innovative ways to reduce water pollution and manage water more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it\u2019s relevant: <\/strong>Protracted GERD negotiations, population growth and climate change are big threats to Egypt\u2019s water security, making conservation efforts essential. The government <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7a706c7f-6b04-48a9-97ec-cf222060b61f\">has launched<\/a> multiple water-saving projects, focusing on irrigation, rainwater, installing utilities, and constructing some 19 new desalination plants at an estimated cost of EGP 11 bn.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=svvIHxwgmDY\">Smart Cities: Building for the Cities of Tomorrow<\/a><\/strong><strong> \u2014 sustainable cities are on their way <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=svvIHxwgmDY\">watch, runtime: 44:23<\/a>): Half the world\u2019s population lives on 2% of its land, consuming 75% of its resources, according to this 2015 documentary, which showcases sustainable alternatives. Abu Dhabi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/en\/masdar-city\/the-city\/sustainability\">Masdar City<\/a> is an investment zone and residential area, targeting 50k residents and 40k daily commuters. It maximizes natural light, solar patterns and wind movement, to use energy and resources efficiently. The EUR 56 mn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-innovation-austria.at\/article\/sheikh-zayed-desert-learning-center\/?lang=en\">Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Center<\/a>, is \u2153 underground and benefits from a supply of pre-cooled air circulating through 800 meters of piping. And Austria\u2019s first smart grid model city, K\u00f6stendorf, generates electricity through 43 photovoltaic systems installed on house rooftops, with a total peak output of 200 KW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it\u2019s relevant: <\/strong>Egypt has clocked that sustainability is the name of the game. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/215c347a-e9a3-4440-adb8-648ba394b2ac\">In October<\/a>, the government said it would invest EGP 36.7 bn in FY2020-2021 and 30% of its investment budget in FY2021-2022 in green projects. Aspects of smart city design \u2014 including \u2018Internet of Things\u2019 software and hardware \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9fb917f4-3617-4634-baac-b54ccf2a9003\">will be part<\/a> of the new administrative capital.
