parliament\u2019s 14 committees and electing the leadership of each, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/2629173.aspx\">Ahram Gate<\/a>. Each of the Senate\u2019s 300 members is required to sit on at least one committee. Among them: constitutional and legislative affairs, financial, economic and investment, foreign, Arab and African affairs, as well as defense and national security. Saudi is planning to build a USD 5 bn solar and wind plant that will act as a less-polluting alternative to hydrocarbons while being among the world\u2019s biggest green hydrogen makers when the plant opens in the Neom megacity in 2025. Even with Saudi\u2019s competitive advantage of perpetual sunshine, skeptics point to Saudi Arabia\u2019s weak track record of implementing planned projects in the renewables sector.<\/p><p><strong>Demand for hydrogen has escalated in the past period<\/strong>, with the European Union alone committing USD 500 bn for the element to scale up its infrastructure. Meanwhile, BloombergNEF estimates the hydrogen market could be worth as much as USD 700 bn by 2050.<\/p><p><strong>What do can one do with lots and lots of hydrogen? <\/strong>The gas can be used to make fertilizers, methanol and in refining processes \u2014 and it\u2019s being tipped as a <a href=\"https:\/\/hydrogeneurope.eu\/hydrogen-applications\">clean-burning energy of the future<\/a> in everything from trains and planes to cars and city buses.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>SIGN OF THE (CREEPY) TIMES- Passing through DXB? The system uses biometric technology that relies on a mix of facial and iris recognition, and means travelers can check in for their flight and pass through immigration \u2014 as well as present <a href=\"http:\/\/tradearabia.com\/news\/TTN_379338.html\">digital verification<\/a> of their covid-19 medical records \u2014 without any paperwork or phone apps.<\/p><p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES #2- \u201cVaxications\u201d are now an emerging trend as the thirst for<\/strong><strong> travel has people jumping on a plane for a post-vaccine vacation<\/strong> as the global rollout continues and after months of travel restrictions. We are set to receive 40 mn doses of AstraZeneca\u2019s vaccine this year, according to Zayed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has so far received a total of 400k vaccine doses<\/strong>, including 350k from China\u2019s Sinopharm vaccine and the remainder from AstraZeneca. Sell-side analysts have set target prices for the share in the EGP 5 range, including EGP 5.00 (Pharos), EGP 5.20 (Prime) and EGP 5.47 (HC). Banque Misr <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/27ab4605-69a3-4180-8859-c884a3a6492e\">became CI Capital\u2019s largest shareholder<\/a> last August when it <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f0f7b1af-ac4f-4c26-aff7-bd486662d28c\">acquired an additional 11% stake<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is CI Capital asking for?<\/strong> CI is asking that the bank raise its offer price by 19% to EGP 5.60 if it wants to acquire a 90% stake. The business information service says the SDRs could help countries including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and South Africa cushion their FX reserves. Emerging market countries would only account for USD 206 bn of the new allocations at most, according to Barclays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s foreign reserves are inching back up to their February 2020 peak<\/strong>, when they had reached USD 45.5 bn. Central bank figures <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7b7c0349-0e02-47a3-ab71-b966879240b6\">released yesterday<\/a> showed our reserves are currently at USD 40.2 bn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What exactly are SDRs, again?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/About\/Factsheets\/Sheets\/2016\/08\/01\/14\/51\/Special-Drawing-Right-SDR\">SDRs<\/a> act as a kind of international reserve currency or asset designed to act as a supplement to IMF member countries\u2019 reserves. They were created in 1969 to create an alternative to gold and USD as the only two global reserve assets. While not currencies in themselves, SDRs are held by the fund\u2019s member countries as a way to hedge against their reliance on costly debt to build up stocks of foreign reserves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong> The potential new SDR allocation was first floated by the UN <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9d0ed0fc-a156-4953-9408-15d459d93c02\">a year ago<\/a>, when emerging markets began running to the IMF for emergency assistance as the reality of the covid-19 economic crisis began to settle in. The Trump administration shot down a proposal for the new issuance <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e2f1d260-e322-4c4b-9764-8043d5cc2720\">last April<\/a>, saying it would actually not be beneficial for the countries that need it most. Former US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin suggested at the time that, because SDRs are allocated based on shareholding proportions, G20 countries would actually get the vast majority of the new SDRs, while the poorest developing countries would only get around 3%. The two parties have a memorandum of understanding that funding will also be earmarked for other, unspecified products, NowPay said. The startup has so far managed over USD 200 mn in salaries and has signed on corporate clients including SODIC, Wadi Degla, Domty and Axa. NowPay, founded in 2019 to help employees manage their finances and organize advance salary payments, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/29\/fintech-startup-nowpay-raises-usd-600k-in-seed-funding\/\">raised USD 600k<\/a> in a seed funding round led by Endure Capital and 500 Startups. Many of these focus on how to maintain quality and applicability while ensuring fair access. In the US, \u201ceducation reformers\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5775795\/education-reform-failed-america\/\">are pushing<\/a> for more K-12 standardized testing and privately-managed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/policy-politics\/what-are-charter-schools\/2018\/08\">charter schools<\/a>, while universities increasingly operate as private businesses, with tuition fees to match. Throughout Africa and Asia, policymakers, academics, students and employers grapple with questions about education quality, access and cost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBackpack Full of Cash\u201d looks at the US K-12 debate <\/strong>\u2014<strong> charter schools vs public schools:<\/strong> \u201cBackpack Full of Cash\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.backpackfullofcash.com\/\">watch, runtime: 93 minutes<\/a>) asks if privatizing the US public education sector improves education. As of 2015, US public schools educated 90% of American students \u2014 50 mn children \u2014 at a cost of about USD 600 bn a year. Education reformers argue it\u2019s more efficient to run the whole system like a business, with parents able to shop around for competition-based charter schools \u2014 which receive public funding but are exempt from the state laws and regulations governing public schools. But charter schools are accused of siphoning off public funds to maximize shareholder income, widening inequality and mismanaging finances \u2014 with no evidence to show they actually perform better than public schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While \u201cSchool Inc,\u201d advocates for charter schools, on the grounds they offer more freedom of choice:<\/strong> \u201cSchool Inc.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/216854055\">watch episode 1, runtime: 56:35<\/a>), a three-part documentary series produced by the libertarian think tank the Cato Institute, offers a very different perspective. Its argument is that charter schools offer freedom of choice not available in the public school system, and that excellence in US public schools hasn\u2019t scaled up like innovations in other fields. Public subsidies and competition would allow it to: Both historically helped private schools lower their prices and improve quality, the films argue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSchool, Pressure & Innovative Education\u201d shows that in South Korea you can\u2019t succeed without private academies:<\/strong> \u201cSchool Inc.\u201d extols the benefits of South Korea\u2019s hagwons \u2014 private after-school academies attended by some 80% of the population. But while hagwons train children to do well in international tests, they also gobble up a significant portion of parent incomes, says Deutsche Welle documentary \u201cSchool, Pressure & Innovative Education\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snowdropsolution.com\/documentary\/school-pressure-innovative-education-dw-documentary\/?fbclid=IwAR3eXeuuRAjjgWu3IYWx6ltMnWS_wrwAJlhHR3uf3hZsdU0fK6nN_eWgIOU\">watch, runtime: 26:01<\/a>). South Korean children study for 4-6 hours a day at hagwons, after a 7-hour school day. They also face tremendous pressure: The number one cause of death for South Koreans aged 9-24 is suicide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But South Korean edtech innovators are also enhancing accessibility: <\/strong>Mass online classes and new edtech developments are helping to meet the need for extra tuition. Online teaching \u2018superstar\u2019 Kil-Young Cha reaches up to 1 mn students through his classes, while earning USD 6 mn a year. Sera Lim, designer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marvrus.com\/\">Marvrus, VR software<\/a> that allows students to virtually \u201ctravel\u201d to English-speaking countries to practice their English, had supplied the software to over 7k students and 100 schools as of June 2020. She aims to narrow the education gap, she says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEducation Education\u201d looks at how China\u2019s higher education can come with enormous debt: <\/strong>There\u2019s a fierce struggle for China\u2019s subsidized public university seats, according to \u201cEducation Education\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/topdocumentaryfilms.com\/education-education\/\">watch, runtime: 59:01<\/a>). At private universities, four years of tuition can cost some families 60 years of income, but some unscrupulous private universities deliberately target low-income families, lying about the academic rigor of their courses to persuade parents to make down payments, the film shows. They promise a university degree will lead to a good job and steady income, assuming low-income families won\u2019t assess their real value proposition before paying. But in the deeply competitive labor market, university graduates struggle to find work and financially sustain themselves, even with very modest expenses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And with debt soaring in the US too, the real value of a US degree is questioned in \u201cIvory Tower\u201d:<\/strong> At the national level, US student loan debt reached USD 1 tn in 2014, according to \u201cIvory Tower\u201d (watch on Amazon Prime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3263520\/\">runtime 90 minutes<\/a>). It stood at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/student-loan-debt-2019-statistics-and-outlook-4772007\">USD 1.57 tn<\/a> in 2020, and average US student loan debt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-colleges\/paying-for-college\/articles\/see-how-student-loan-borrowing-has-risen-in-10-years\">as of September 2020<\/a> exceeded USD 30k. US undergraduate university tuition \u2014 which can be as high as USD 60k per year \u2014 has increased more than any other good or service in the country since 1978. \u201cIvory Tower\u201d asks what a degree is worth but gives no definitive answers.
