We have more details in this morning\u2019s Covid Watch, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES INTERNATIONALLY are all coming out of Washington but pertain to<\/strong><strong> the Middle East<\/strong>, including the release of a report that says Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved journalist Jamal Khashoggi\u2019s brutal murder in 2018. Also making headlines is US President Joe Biden\u2019s first airstrike in the region. We have more on both in Around the World, below.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>*** CATCH UP <\/strong><strong>QUICK (and refresh your memory if you woke up with weekend amnesia).<\/strong> The big stories from Thursday\u2019s EnterprisePM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capmas has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7eb1b70a-9855-429c-bbdb-4f5761923afd\">everything you wanted to know<\/a><\/strong><strong> about the first and second waves<\/strong> here in Egypt;<\/li>\n<li>The Sovereign Fund of Egypt is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5ff934f4-35e2-41d7-a97e-5a0bd7634b47\">reportedly eyeing<\/a> a <strong>10% stake in Amoun Pharma<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>The global economy <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4c21f101-1408-4586-a7df-f30e0d31ef43\">lost the equivalent<\/a><\/strong><strong> of as many as 255 mn full-time jobs<\/strong> in 2020, according to a report from the International Labor Organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mid-term exams<\/strong><strong> are under way at public schools and universities<\/strong>, as per the timeline laid out by Education Minister Tarek Shawki and Higher Education Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar earlier this month. The exams are being held with strict precautionary measures \u2014 including wearing face masks and greater physical distancing \u2014 to contain the spread of covid-19, the Higher Education Ministry said in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sECoCZ\">a statement<\/a>. Public schools and universities got an extra week tacked onto their mid-year holiday <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2fe593b4-71c9-4cc5-a539-f6f6c6d2ebd2\">last week<\/a>, with their second term starting today instead of 21 February. We have more on the first day of exams in Last Night\u2019s Talk Shows, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s women empowerment plan is now officially in execution phase:<\/strong> Backing women\u2019s representation and leadership in the corporate world, promoting career-family balance and encourage private investment in elder and child care, and offering training programs in sectors in which women are underrepresented are among the three-year goals for the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/636da4c9-b56a-4c5e-a3b5-0d6b10c58fa4\">Closing the Gender Gap Accelerator<\/a> program, cabinet said in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3aZPvs9\">a statement<\/a>. The program was launched <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/636da4c9-b56a-4c5e-a3b5-0d6b10c58fa4\">last July<\/a> by the International Cooperation Ministry, the National Council for Women (NCW), and the World Economic Forum. Bond yields spiked to their highest levels in almost a year, triggering an equity sell-off which saw tech stocks have their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-24\/asia-stocks-set-to-gain-on-powell-treasuries-drop-markets-wrap?sref=mmeFTDW1\">worst day since October<\/a>. Rates on 10-year bonds surged as high as 1.61%, caused by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1982faaf-4cff-4e56-9b81-ce4a3e8ebcf5\">\u201cextraordinarily weak\u201d<\/a> auction of seven-year notes. \u201cIt was big \u2026 It was almost as if a dam broke,\u201d analysts at Rabobank wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s happening here?<\/strong> The jitters began as the Biden administration was readying the USD 1.9 tn stimulus bill, and with the Fed continuing to buy bns of USD of treasuries every month, investors are growing increasingly fearful that a pickup in inflation will eat into their returns and are dumping bonds. Not only this, but traders \u2014 with one eye on the run of positive economic data \u2014 are beginning to price in rate hikes further down the line, an idea that the European Central Bank is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-25\/ecb-s-schnabel-warns-rise-in-real-rates-may-hurt-recovery?sref=mmeFTDW1\">already moving to quash<\/a>. Analysts are now concerned that rising yields will start to dim the attractiveness of the stock market, triggering flight from equities into bonds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not great news for emerging markets:<\/strong> Rising rates in the US typically suck capital out of emerging economies and strengthen the greenback, leaving developing nations with weaker currencies and hurting the finances of countries holding a lot of USD-denominated debt. This was seen on Thursday when a basket of EM currencies saw its worst day since the covid crash last March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But on the upside, EMs are <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-16\/europe-falls-behind-emerging-markets-as-bond-market-stress-grows?sref=mmeFTDW1\">still attractive enough<\/a><\/strong><strong> to eurobond investors thanks to<\/strong><strong> negative yields in Europe, with the latest case in point being Saudi Arabia<\/strong>, which sold EUR 1.5 bn of eurobonds at a negative rate, according to a Saudi Finance Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mof.gov.sa\/en\/mediacenter\/News\/Pages\/news2422021.aspx\">statement<\/a>. The sale was c.3x oversubscribed and yields stood at -0.057% for EUR 1 bn of three-year notes and 0.646% for EUR 500 mn nine-year notes. LNG exports <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/61d78876-de6b-4cf9-a236-cb39e6b3c443\">fared terribly during covid-19<\/a>, with Egypt completing only two LNG shipments since the start of the pandemic \u2014 one in July and one in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9c0ac814-b962-4593-8678-a9c81beca39c\">October<\/a> \u2014 as global gas prices hit record lows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exports have picked up so far this year \u2014 but this isn\u2019t going to last:<\/strong> Egypt has exported 27 mn cbm of gas per day from Damietta and the Idku LNG plant so far in 2021, according to Platts Analytics data \u2014 more than double its export rates a year ago. But exports are set to decrease this summer, averaging around 16 mn cbm per day, with domestic gas production reaching 198 mn cbm per day by the end of the year, according to Mosis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s no sign of when the Damietta plant\u2019s next shipment might take place<\/strong>, with global trade flow softwares showing no tankers en route following the departure of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3613f080-5d75-4b85-af31-1b66fcda3204\">two natural gas tankers<\/a> from the port last week. Two Damietta cargoes scheduled for late February and early March have reportedly been canceled, sources told S&P. Damietta is running a series of trial shipments before formally resuming exports, with the next trial shipment likely heading to Europe, Oil Ministry spokesperson Hamdy Abdel Aziz <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bf5c92c9-141c-4100-937b-20878feca8eb\">previously told Enterprise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And more investment is needed for our export plans to materialize:<\/strong> Though Egypt has potential to be the \u201ccenterpiece of any regional gas ambitions,\u201d we will continue to need foreign oil and gas investment to \u201cmaintain, let alone expand, domestic gas production and LNG exports,\u201d S&P\u2019s Mosis says. Egypt launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2c4454f8-c6d8-46dc-a04b-f1d3ab0b9291\">first gas exploration tender of 2021<\/a>, covering 24 blocs, earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is taking other steps to boost its ambitions as a regional energy hub: <\/strong>In addition to its establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01a49990-c0a6-474a-9234-976ca6dc30c3\">East Med Gas Forum last year<\/a>, Egypt and Israel agreed last week to build a pipeline connecting Israel\u2019s offshore Leviathan gas field to Egypt\u2019s liquefaction plants to help Israel ramp up its exports to Europe. A planned natural gas pipeline connecting Egypt and Cyprus, which authorities were reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/22727ffe-7c02-481d-9cc5-8386ebe9dfbb\">in discussions over last year<\/a>, should also boost Egypt\u2019s supplies of LNG for liquefaction, and allow it to re-export to Europe. The last three months have seen between 270k and 290k tourists visiting Egypt on average per month, the minister said, up from 90k when commercial travel resumed in July following the covid-19 lockdown. El Anany suggested that other global destinations could take until 2024 to recover, while Egypt could stage a quicker turnaround thanks to the fact that many of Egypt\u2019s tourist destinations, such as beach resorts, are open air, as well as the appeal of the new Grand Egyptian Museum, should push for a faster recovery in Egypt than global estimates predict.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a somewhat more optimistic view than others:<\/strong> Former chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Federation Elhamy El Zayat <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5d91aaf0-e0cd-4308-ab58-af9115ca8c13\">told the local press earlier this month<\/a> that pre-pandemic numbers were unlikely to return before 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism revenues plunged by 75% in 2020<\/strong> to just <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3106a1b0-6cfc-4c04-80c9-8da5fe98049e\">USD 4 bn<\/a>, with only 3.6 mn tourists visiting Egypt, down from 13 mn the year before. Over the next 3-5 years, the government will continue to invest heavily in the economy, with an eye to attract investments and help the economy stage a post-covid recovery, Madbouly said. After that phase is over, the private sector will be given the reins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the meantime, the government knows where it wants private businesses to invest:<\/strong> In addition to a portfolio of unspecified projects cabinet will outline for the private sector in the coming period, Madbouly called on businesses to invest in national projects and initiatives, including the EGP 500 bn Decent Life initiative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The private sector continues to lag behind other areas of the economy:<\/strong> The need for more private sector involvement in the economy was made clear in a World Bank\/International Finance Corporation report last year that said that private businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/38b1261a-92be-4b13-9b9d-72bdf1261ddc\">are yet to feel the benefits of the government\u2019s economic reform program<\/a>.
