The variant is threatening exporting industries in Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Thailand, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/delta-variant-outbreaks-in-sparsely-vaccinated-asian-countries-disrupt-production-11629807725?mod=hp_lead_pos6\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> writes \u2014 countries that had largely managed to contain the impact of covid-19 for the first 14 months of the pandemic, but which are now being hammered. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/08\/24\/vietnam-covid-delta-outbreak-pfizer-astrazeneca-sputnik-sinopharm\/\">Fortune<\/a> is also on the Vietnam story. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-24\/algeria-severs-diplomatic-ties-with-morocco-minister-says\">Bloomberg<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>ALSO- Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts is dead at age 80.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/charlie-watts-rolling-stones-drummer-dead-obit-1161926\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a> magazine has the story.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY- Foreign residents of Saudi Arabia can now <\/strong><strong>take a direct flight to the kingdom<\/strong> after officials lifted yesterday a ban on direct entry from Egypt and 19 other destinations, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=216357173858801&amp;id=100064535599158\">a cabinet statement<\/a>. <strong>Tourists and non-resident travellers are still not allowed into KSA<\/strong>, except to perform Umrah \u2014 which Saudi authorities had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a9b7d2d1-a767-4a8d-8a0f-b42df390ce59\">greenlit earlier this month<\/a> for 2 mn vaccinated pilgrims.<\/p><p><strong>The catch:<\/strong> Egyptian expats and other foreign residents travelling directly to Saudi Arabia from Egypt \u2014 with a valid residency permit \u2014 must have received a full course of a Saudi-approved jab before having returned home. Siemens is already studying a pilot project to produce green hydrogen in Egypt as an alternative source of power (with an eye to eventually exporting) under a letter of intent <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3a852c99-ab78-4c24-8597-145fae51ea0b\">signed earlier this year<\/a> between the two parties, which had proposed the generation of green hydrogen from renewable electricity sources with an output of more than 100 MW, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siemens Energy is no stranger to high-profile energy projects in Egypt. <\/strong>It played a key role in getting the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/new.siemens.com\/eg\/en\/company\/topic-areas\/egypt-megaproject\/news.html\">three largest combined-cycle power plants<\/a> off the ground a few years back, putting an end to the rolling blackouts that roiled the nation. And it is involved in everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dccf473a-1577-4243-9e1b-f271fb01c228\">the new administrative capital\u2019s national electricity control center<\/a> and an upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bba779b5-fcf1-4c42-ab96-3c83c234d3e1\">500 MW wind power plant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pilot project comes as part of the government\u2019s wider green hydrogen ambitions:<\/strong> President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/353347579487310\">issued a directive<\/a> last month to create a green hydrogen strategy, with an eye towards launching an initial phase of projects that could be worth USD 3-4 bn, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fe7a15bc-d122-4bdd-9aab-2af8f4f37393\">previous statements<\/a> by the Electricity Ministry. Eni is also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/06039efd-b70c-4377-9424-7db2c0f2cb09\">producing feasibility studies<\/a> on green and blue hydrogen production, while Belgium\u2019s DEME Group will also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e5155a79-3981-4cfc-a4ce-4edb9ab7f2c9\">work with Egypt<\/a> on exploring green hydrogen under an MoU with the oil and electricity ministries and the Egyptian navy. USD 2.8 bn through the IMF\u2019s <\/strong><strong>new SDR allocation, which came into effect on 23 August:<\/strong> The International Monetary Fund (IMF) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Topics\/special-drawing-right\/2021-SDR-Allocation#footnote\">announced the disbursal of almost USD 650 bn<\/a> in new special drawing rights (SDRs) \u2014 the largest allocation in its history \u2014 to all 190 member countries, in a \u201csignificant shot in the arm\u201d to emerging and low-income nations to support the global recovery from the pandemic, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2021\/08\/23\/pr21248-imf-managing-director-announces-the-us-650-billion-sdr-allocation-comes-into-effect\">a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest allocation brings the total value of SDRs Egypt had received so far from the <\/strong><strong>IMF to some USD 4 bn.<\/strong> The country had received as much as USD 1.1 bn in SDRs \u2014 allocated in proportion to members\u2019 existing quotas in the fund, with Egypt\u2019s amounting to 0.43% \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/np\/tre\/sdr\/proposal\/2009\/0709.htm\">in August 2009<\/a> as part of a general allocation of USD 250 bn geared towards providing liquidity to the global economic system. The IMF\u2019s latest largest-ever distribution of monetary reserves \u2014 which Barclays had previously said would <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f015b9d6-2861-4d65-bdd3-e8dcea2d822d\">particularly benefit Egypt<\/a> \u2014 will provide additional liquidity for global economies, supplement their FX reserves, and reduce their reliance on more expensive domestic or external debt, Georgieva said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The IMF thinks our economy has been \u201cresilient\u201d in the face of the pandemic: <\/strong>\u201cThe Egyptian economy has performed better than expected despite the pandemic. Containment measures, supported by the authorities\u2019 effective crisis management, and strong implementation of their policy program helped mitigate the effects of the crisis,\u201d the IMF wrote in its review of the IMF\u2019s USD 5.2 bn standby loan <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/21258759-15a5-4f32-bd15-b6710a8f13f6\">in November 2020<\/a>. The fund had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d0f0225e-15bb-41ec-b441-e7f0beb52b47\">bumped up its outlook<\/a> for Egypt\u2019s growth to 2.8% from 2% following the completion of its first review of the program in January. Fiscal policy for the upcoming fiscal year \u201cappropriately targets a gradual consolidation to balance needed support for the economic recovery while safeguarding fiscal sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat are SDRs?\u201d we hear you ask. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/About\/Factsheets\/Sheets\/2016\/08\/01\/14\/51\/Special-Drawing-Right-SDR\">SDRs<\/a> act as a kind of international reserve currency or asset designed to act as a supplement to IMF member countries\u2019 reserves. They were created in 1969 to create an alternative to gold and USD as the only two global reserve assets. While not currencies in themselves, SDRs are held by the fund\u2019s member countries as a way to hedge against their reliance on costly debt to build up stocks of foreign reserves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O<\/strong><strong>kay, but if an SDR isn\u2019t a currency itself, how do we \u201cspend\u201d it? <\/strong>Think of it as taking pressure off the \u201creal\u201d currency in our bank account \u2014 we can use SDRs to pay down debt, for example, leaving USD \/ EUR \/ etc to continue circulating in our economy. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Topics\/special-drawing-right\/seven-things-you-need-to-know-about-sdr-allocations\">the IMF\u2019s explainer page<\/a> suggests: \u201cCountries can exchange their SDRs for hard currencies with other IMF members. This has historically been done on a voluntary basis, with countries in a stronger financial position agreeing to help others when needed. Authorities have been piloting the new Advanced Cargo Information (ACI) pre-registration system since April and had originally planned to make it compulsory at all seaports <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9bf7988d-19f6-45a6-ada1-65d7c23ec723\">in July<\/a>, before making it mandatory at other ports of entry at a later stage. Calls from business groups had led the Finance Ministry to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fa0781e5-12b0-479f-ad39-29caa0d05139\">push the 1 July deadline<\/a> to October to give businesses more time to adapt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the business community says it\u2019s still not ready: <\/strong>Importers and exporters are <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/28551a6e-d44f-44ad-93f5-0c1aab97ef28\">lobbying<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/28551a6e-d44f-44ad-93f5-0c1aab97ef28\">for a multi-month extension<\/a> of the 1 October deadline for registering on the new ACI system \u2014 a World Customs Organization protocol that runs on blockchain technology \u2014 saying they still need time to go through with the \u201ccomplex\u201d and \u201clengthy\u201d registration process. A large number of importers said they faced challenges in completing the three-step process to pre-register a shipment through the system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FinMin, however, says traffic on the ACI system is picking up: <\/strong>As many as 2.5k importers and customs agents have registered about 18k customs transactions for shipments via the ACI since its pilot launch in April, Maait said. Nafeza now has nearly 7.7k activated accounts, and CargoX now has about 26k exporters registered, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- The four steps to register with Nafeza are:<\/strong> Create an account on the Nafeza digital platform, register your e-signature either through Misr for Central Clearing, Depository and Registry (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsd.com.eg\/mcdr\/english\/\">MCDR<\/a>) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egypttrust.com\/en\/\">Egypt Trust<\/a>, and file a request through Nafeza to obtain a shipment identification number within 48 hours, which will be valid for three months. After receiving the ID, you must then register on the CargoX Platform for Blockchain Document Transfer (BDT) and submit the required documents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maait has rolled out a series of financial incentives to encourage companies to register <\/strong><strong>during the ACI\u2019s pilot phase<\/strong>, the latest of which is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0adc039f-f92b-4e9b-8e19-07e4ff2c1051\">a 50% discount<\/a> on registration fees for those who sign up this month, in addition to 30% off for anyone registering during the first half, and 20% off during the second half of September. From connecting the New Administrative Capital with the rest of Cairo through a fleet of buses, to participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/hardhats\/cairos-ring-road-isnt-just-getting-wider-its-getting-a-brt-lane-heres-why-thats-a-great-idea\/\">upcoming BRT rapid mass transit system<\/a> for the Ring Road, to providing mass transportation options to new urban centers under development, Mowasalat Misr has its hand in it all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The company has also made a number of major capex and investment announcements. <\/strong>These include plans to invest <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/01\/14\/mowasalat-plans-to-invest-epg-3-bn-in-egypt-by-2021\/\">EPG 3 bn in Egypt by 2021<\/a>. Sources told us back in 2018 that the company \u2014 formed when Abu Dhabi-based Emirates National Group (ENG) acquired 70% of Misr Bus <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2016\/07\/12\/emirates-national-group-acquires-70-of-misr-bus\/\">back in 2016<\/a> \u2014 was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/09\/18\/mowasalat-misr-plans-ipo-in-late-2019-or-early-2020\/\">eyeing an IPO<\/a> for 2019 or 2020. Naturally, covid-19 and general market turbulence have since hampered the timelines of these plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One thing that isn\u2019t on pause is a potential merger with transit company High Jet<\/strong>, which could go through before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, we <\/strong><strong>speak<\/strong><strong> with vice chairman and GM of development Mohsen Sabra<\/strong>, who discussed what came of these plans, and how the company plans to execute on all these major transit projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Below are edited transcripts of our conversation: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Could we be seeing a <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/highjet-eg.com\/en\/\">High Jet<\/a><\/strong><strong> acquisition before year\u2019s end? <\/strong>Mowasalat Misr\u2019s ambitions extend as far as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ec2372b9-0b98-44ae-b489-8dd3e6109164\">a bid to purchase<\/a> High Jet\u2019s 60-bus fleet running trips throughout 14 cities across the country, through an acquisition. The agreement has so far reached its final stages and is expected to wrap up before the end of this year, according to Sabra, who did not disclose figures on the size of the transaction. He tells us that the company has yet to decide on advisers for the transaction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about the fate of Mowasalat Misr\u2019s IPO? \u201c<\/strong>We have not eliminated going for a listing,\u201d Sabra said. \u201cWe\u2019re currently studying the move, and should these studies favor the move, we may move forward with it soon.\u201d Company sources had told us back in 2018 that Mowasalat Misr plans to list shares in the EGX either in 4Q2019 or early 2020. Sabra did not elaborate on why the IPO was postponed, saying that the decision needed to be studied further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mowasalat Misr has so far spent EGP 1.5 bn of its EGP 3 bn investment target. <\/strong>The company is looking to deploy the remainder of its funds by expanding its public transit networks, which saw some delays due to the outbreak of covid-19, Sabra says. As for when the rest of the EGP 3 bn will be deployed, Sabra noted that this will depend on the number of projects and new contracts signed. \u201cThe company is constantly seeking to grow its operations geographically, but the covid-19 pandemic has slowed that momentum slightly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mowasalat Misr\u2019s road to New Alamein \u2014 a regional transit plan: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mwasalatmisr.com\/index.html\">Mowasalat Masr<\/a> has agreed to form a new company in partnership with Super Jet and the Administrative Capital for Urban Development to manage and operate internal transit at the New Administrative Capital in a project worth EGP 1-1.2 bn, Sabra said. The consortium will be operating some 20 natural gas-powered buses in the initial rollout of the new system, which will later be revised once the group gets a better reading on ridership in the new city, Sabra added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mowasalat Misr is one of nine transit groups offering services to the New Administrative Capital <\/strong>which also includes Star Line, Al-Masria, Ajyad, Al Ostaz and FM. The nine companies have been awarded with contracts to manage and operate transit lines connecting the New Administrative Capital to almost 90 locations in the Greater Cairo Region, Sabra said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking of Mowasalat\u2019s plans to convert to natgas fuel fleets:<\/strong> The company will not purchase any new vehicles that aren\u2019t either dual-fuel or electric, Sabra tells us. As for replacing their current diesel fleet, Sabra says it is ineffective from an engineering standpoint. It would be better to phase out these vehicles as they reach the end of their utility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Separately, the company is expecting to invest some EGP 1 bn to execute its <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/da4d397d-40ab-4057-8d11-e16fb4938949\">agreement with NUCA<\/a><\/strong><strong> to provide services in six new planned cities<\/strong>, Sabra tells us.
