<\/strong>Mondays in mid-August are usually slow news days on par with the late-December news slowdown, but \u2026 let\u2019s just say we live in interesting times, shall we?<\/p><p><strong>Let\u2019s start with some very welcome news: <\/strong><strong>The EGX extended its gains to a sixth day <\/strong><strong>yesterday<\/strong>, its longest upwards run since January, off the back of positive 2Q2021 earnings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-15\/mideast-stocks-gain-as-egypt-extends-winning-streak-inside-em?srnd=premium-middle-east&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. <strong>The benchmark EGX30 is now up nearly 1.7% for the year.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>International schools are due back in session for the 2021-2022 academic year on 12 <\/strong><strong>September<\/strong>, the Education Ministry said yesterday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/2397906\">Al Masry Al Youm<\/a>. Public schools, meanwhile, will be back on 9 October, with their 2021-2022 academic year running through 16 June 2022.<\/p><p><strong>Association-owned international schools are hitting the books this month<\/strong>, as are other K-12 institutions not directly regulated by the Education Ministry. CAC, BISC, NCBIS and MBIS all go back this month, with Cairo American College starting tomorrow (or today, if you\u2019re a grade 9 student\u2026).<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>The Sisi administration says it will make vaccinating university and school <\/strong><strong>staff a top priority<\/strong> after the president directed officials yesterday to come up with a plan to jab all educators and students ahead of the start of the school year, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/379009273587807\">Ittihadeya statement<\/a>. This comes after news <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f2512578-f4ba-42c3-9850-911b68265072\">earlier this month<\/a> that schools and universities would be next in line for covid shots. Some universities are already making vaccination mandatory, with AUC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b16131a2-9b19-4658-97ce-f3c124248e34\">announcing last week<\/a> that only vaccinated individuals would be allowed access to its campus as of the upcoming academic year.<\/p><p><strong>The news comes as the covid case count officially surpassed the 100 case per day <\/strong><strong>mark <\/strong><strong>for the first time since 13 July<\/strong>, a steady climb from daily infections in the early 30s just under three weeks ago, with the exception of a brief drop on 5 August, according to our in-house covid tracker.<\/p><p><strong>The Health Ministry <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=138649415112948&amp;set=a.113299804314576\">reported<\/a><\/strong><strong> 101 new covid-19 infections yesterday<\/strong>, up from 99 the day before. Egypt has now disclosed a total of 285,385 confirmed cases of covid-19. One journalist yesterday told CNN that the streets are empty and many government and security personnel have exchanged their uniforms for the white scarf worn by members of the militant Islamist group. The Islamist group said it is calling for an \u201copen, inclusive Islamic government.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>How is this playing in the press? Like a once-in-a-generation foreign affairs story, with <\/strong><strong>plenty of comparisons to the 1975 fall of Saigon<\/strong> at the end of the US war in Vietnam. <strong>Egyp<\/strong><strong>t\u2019s unemployment rate was largely flat in 2Q2021 at 7.3%<\/strong>, improving just 0.1 percentage points from the preceding quarter, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/8\/Capmas-2Q2021-unemployment-statistics-release.pdf\">official figures (pdf)<\/a> released yesterday by state statistics agency Capmas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s still a huge improvement from 2Q2020<\/strong>, during which the jobless count rose to a two-year high due to the covid-19 pandemic. The unemployment rate <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/80fdf495-1342-4345-a5bd-6387379141bd\">hit 9.6% between April and June last year<\/a> as the partial lockdown of the economy took its toll on the job market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt had fewer unemployed in 2Q2021 \u2014 and fewer people in the workforce. <\/strong>The labor force participation rate \u2014 which looks at those between the ages of 15 and 64 \u2014 fell to 41.9% from 42.2% in 1Q2021. The size of the workforce fell to 29.1 mn, down from almost 29.3 mn in the previous quarter. <strong>Capmas suggests the declines were the result of covid-19<\/strong>, likely meaning factors at play here include government support to people who lost their jobs during covid, measures in place to curb covid-19, and subdued economic growth thanks to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The unemployment rate among women <\/strong>\u2014 <strong>which is consistently recorded as much higher than that among men <\/strong>\u2014 <strong>came in at its lowest in over a year at 15%<\/strong>, down 0.9 percentage points q-o-q and 1.2 percentage points y-o-y. As we <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/80fdf495-1342-4345-a5bd-6387379141bd\">noted<\/a>at the height of the pandemic, that could mean that many working moms left the workforce to stay home and look after kids. Unemployment among men stood at 5.7% in the second quarter, up from 5.6% in the first quarter, its highest since 3Q2020 \u2014 though still well below its 2Q2020 peak of 8.5%. The measures, part of a drive by the ESF to grow its membership, would see the regulator refuse to approve board meeting minutes and reject applications to renew licenses by firms which don\u2019t become members of the organization, she adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LET\u2019S BE CLEAR- The federation \u2260 the Egyptian Capital Market Association (ECMA)<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/03\/egypt-gets-its-first-federation-for-securities\/\">the (much) better-known of the two industry associations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not clear whether the FRA is taking this seriously:<\/strong> The FRA has yet to look into the ESF\u2019s proposal, Yacoub said. She declined to specify when the measures may come up for discussion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Membership is already a requirement for new companies:<\/strong> New brokerage firms, asset managers and financial advisors have to register with the federation to obtain an FRA license, Soliman Nazmy, head of the federation's founding committee, told us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The federation has struggled to increase its membership since launching in 2019: <\/strong>Currently, less than half of all licensed securities firms have signed up to the federation even after the FRA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=09012020&id=3fa039e2-1065-4c06-889e-65659f83bc40\">slashed membership fees by 60%<\/a> last year. Solar and wind projects affiliated with the NREA offset around 2.2k tons of CO2 emissions officials said, adding that the NREA runs projects with a collective capacity of 6k MW, of which 1.2k MW is owned by the NREA.
