Now a full month into its journey as a publicly traded company, <strong>e-Finance\u2019s shares are up 31.9% since their market debut on 20 October<\/strong>. The company is pushing ahead with its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bb3be752-39a5-48a5-8418-7c6ed056b97c\">expansions<\/a> into B2B e-commerce, digital health and the tech-end of tourism, senior execs recently told us.<\/p><p><strong>RANDOM NEWS CLIPPING- And folks say Egyptians are clueless about the rest of the <\/strong><strong>continent? <\/strong>Kenyan daily newspaper The Star is perplexed about how \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-star.co.ke\/news\/big-read\/2021-11-19-silicon-africa-egypt-eyes-top-spot-in-africas-startup-ecosystem\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">seemingly from nowhere<\/a>,\u201d Egypt has brought \u201cnew competition for the better-known startup ecosystems of Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Egypt bade farewell to Bakiza yesterday: <\/strong>Veteran actress Soheir El Bably passed away yesterday at age 86, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3czLIlC\">Youm7<\/a> reports. El Bably\u2019s career began in 1957 and saw her bring to life some of the most memorable characters in Egyptian theater and TV, most notably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fnTKNcrnRZA\">Bakiza and Zaghloul<\/a>\u2019s Bakiza and the strict teacher in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nAD41SZ065Q\">Madraset El Moshaghbeen<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>PSA- It's officially time to bid farewell to our summer clothes<\/strong>, with our favorite weather app calling for a high of 22\u00b0C and low of 15\u00b0C in Greater Cairo today. Coastal and delta governorates should keep their rain boots on as they are to expect light to moderate rain, although nothing as crazy as the weekend\u2019s showers.<\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORIES ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Hamdok\u2019s return has so far failed to quell protests in Sudan:<\/strong> Pro-democracy protesters in Khartoum aren\u2019t satisfied with military chief Abdel Fattah Al Burhan\u2019s decision to reinstate ousted Sudanese civilian prime minister Abdalla Hamdok from office. Some have instead returned to the streets demanding an end to military rule after Burhan yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/65bec126-a223-495d-bed1-54ec949c7e57\">signed a pact<\/a> with Hamdok. Stocks in Hong Kong, Japan and Australia are all in the red this morning, while Brent futures fell 1% at the market open, with oil continuing where it left off last week, when it fell to its lowest level since early October.<\/p><p><strong>There was selling pressure across MENA yesterday<\/strong>, with all of the region\u2019s exchanges closing in the red. Saudi\u2019s benchmark index were the hardest hit, closing the day down 1.9%. (See our market summary in Planet Finance, below, for more.)<\/p><p><strong>This followed a poor end to the week in the US and Europe on Friday<\/strong> as new lockdowns in European countries triggered angst about their impact on economic growth and the potential for a surge in cases in the US. Stocks were in the red across Europe as traders reacted to the Austrian government\u2019s dramatic announcement of a new national lockdown and compulsory vaccination, and Germany\u2019s refusal to rule one out, days after the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic reimposed restrictions. The Dow and the S&amp;P 500 both fell on Friday.<\/p><p><strong>Protests in Europe against covid measures continued yesterday:<\/strong> Demonstrations spread to Brussels yesterday, which saw tens of thousands of people turn out into the street to protest against the government\u2019s use of covid passes to restrict the movement of unvaccinated people. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-health-business-brussels-europe-8b2fb4eb4992b54cd544fc8fa5e19f26\">The AP<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-59363256\">the BBC<\/a> have more.<\/p><p><strong>Uncertainty at the Fed is also weighing on markets:<\/strong> Worries over how the Federal Reserve will tackle inflation and when it will raise interest rates, combined with uncertainty over who President Biden will nominate to head the Fed when Jay Powell\u2019s term ends in February, took a toll on trading. Several Fed officials indicated over the weekend that the central bank could <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f906b102-d025-491f-b0df-1e5c569132e1\">accelerate the taper<\/a> of its bond-buying programme in order to quell inflation, which reached highs not seen since 1990 last month.<\/p><p><strong>Who\u2019s next at the Fed?<\/strong> Biden has said he will announce who will head the Fed for the next four years before the Thanksgiving holiday on 25 November. EGX listing and delisting rules have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/%D9%82%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%B1%D9%82%D9%85-172-%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%86%D8%A9-2021-2.pdf\">amended (pdf)<\/a> to make way for SPACs to hit the EGX.<\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong><strong>ut crucially:<\/strong> The FRA has not yet said when it will allow the first SPACs to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And SPAC stands for\u2026?<\/strong> Special purpose acquisition company. They\u2019re a type of shell company used by investors to acquire firms. SPACs raise money from the public in an IPO and then use the proceeds to merge with or acquire an appropriate company. <strong>Check out <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a6ab3251-641a-4e2c-aa00-6b8486d10c68\">our explainer<\/a><\/strong><strong> for more on how SPACs work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Okay, so how do we do this?<\/strong> Investors that want to set up a SPAC first need to obtain a venture capital license. A board of directors is appointed next, with a chairman who complies with the FRA\u2019s regulations and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/10\/10\/fra-lays-claim-to-pe-industry\/\">guidelines for private equity firms<\/a>. The blank-check firm would then be publicly listed on the EGX and have one month in which to raise capital from investors via a share sale. The funds raised would be placed into an interest-bearing bank account for a maximum of two years while it looks for a company to acquire or merge with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capital requirements:<\/strong> A SPAC will need to have minimum initial capital on hand of EGP 10 mn \u2014 those are the table stakes to play. The regs then give the firms one month from registering with the regulator to issue shares and begin raising capital. <strong>The SPAC must have at least EGP 100 mn in capital<\/strong> to complete an acquisition or merger \u2014 and at least 80% of the SPAC\u2019s capital must be used to acquire a target company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regulation light until they pull the trigger: <\/strong>Until they merge with a target company, SPACs will be exempt from some of the measures imposed on listed companies, including requirements to submit financial statements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rules on share allocation \u2014 and a lockup period for sponsors: <\/strong>At least 25% of a SPAC\u2019s shares (pre-merger) must be held by institutional investors, while sponsors need to commit at least EGP 10 mn in capital and hold at least 5% of the company\u2019s equity post fundraising. Sponsors must also hold onto their shares for two years or until the SPAC pulls the trigger on an acquisition, whichever comes first. Fully 50% of shares are to be earmarked for individual investors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And then, it\u2019s just your regular SPAC:<\/strong> The SPAC places the funds raised into an interest-bearing account for a maximum of two years while it looks for a company to acquire or merge with. The proposed acquisition goes to a general assembly meeting, where shareholders are given the option of exiting the SPAC and drawing back their funds. Shareholders objecting to the transaction have 30 days to exit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if we decide we don\u2019t want to SPAC after all? <\/strong>If the SPAC fails to close an acquisition within the two-year window, it is liquidated and the funds are returned to investors along with any gains made while they were deposited.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background: <\/strong>The regulations come a few weeks after the proposal spearheaded by EGX boss Mohamed Farid <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a464bafe-21f2-4b7e-a02e-63708d29114c\">received the greenlight<\/a> from the FRA. The proposal was partly driven by an increased interest in SPACs in the MENA region, following Swvl\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bfbf590f-581d-4b49-96b3-3ac733bb7fe3\">move<\/a> to merge with blank-check firm US Queen\u2019s Gambit Growth Capital and list on the Nasdaq, as well as Anghami\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a053ad47-40fd-4aba-b6ef-38340681965f\">plans<\/a> to follow suit (potentially next month).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interest in EGYSPACs has been around since at least 2Q: <\/strong>At least two companies have been <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8b2b9e3c-c72c-4751-8ce4-f71fed642c87\">eyeing<\/a> SPACs in Egypt, one Egyptian, and the other international with stakes in several Egyptian companies, Zulficar & Partners founding partner Anwar Zeidan previously told us. These companies have been in talks with the FRA since it first greenlit Farid\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GLOBALLY- There may still be life in the international SPAC market<\/strong>, which fell off a cliff in April following its unprecedented stimulus-fuelled boom in late 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d1723a8e-c146-4d48-8475-01cc9947a5d6\">the Financial Times<\/a> says in this long read out this morning. This came on the back of 16% growth in revenues to EGP 623.8 mn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On a nine-month basis:<\/strong> CHG\u2019s net income grew 58% to EGP 288.1 mn on revenues of EGP 1.90 bn, up 38% y-o-y.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This time last year:<\/strong> CHG <a href=\"http:\/\/resources.inktankir.com\/clho\/Cleopatra-ER-3Q2020-E-FINAL.pdf\">reported (pdf)<\/a> a 11% rise in net income to EGP 80 mn in 3Q2020 due to steady growth of revenues, which increased 16% to EGP 535.9 mn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The group delivered bottom-line growth despite an unfavorable base effect from the same quarter last year<\/strong>, which had a \u201cstrong rebound effect following the lifting of covid-19-related restrictions that were in place during the second quarter of 2020.\u201d CHG also saw a rebound in patient volumes at fertility-specialist Bedaya Hospital, where revenues are catching up with \u201cmanagement\u2019s long-term targets,\u201d putting it on track to deliver record revenues over the coming year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead:<\/strong> The company is on track to \u201cdeliver on our revenue and profitability targets for the year,\u201d building on strong performance in the first three quarters of the year, said CEO Ahmed Ezzeldin. Some have instead returned to the streets demanding an end to military rule after the military seized control last month. Burhan yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/65bec126-a223-495d-bed1-54ec949c7e57\">signed a pact<\/a> with Hamdok to return the latter to office after a month under house arrest. The story is everywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-21\/sudan-s-ousted-premier-to-be-reinstated-as-deal-with-army-signed?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/11\/21\/sudan-military-to-reinstate-pm-hamdok-after-deal-umma-party-head.html\">CNBC<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/21\/africa\/sudan-military-chief-hamdok-deal-intl\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-coup-prime-minister-reinstated-6436e01313e15111ba619076280fe00b\">AP<\/a> by way of just about every major global media outlet in between.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt welcomed the agreement<\/strong>, with the Foreign MInistry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MFAEgypt\/posts\/203731538603367\">expressing hope<\/a> that Hamdok\u2019s return to government would bring a return to stability in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A play for the AU?<\/strong> The agreement to bring Hamdok back into the fold was signed on the same day that Burhan made an appeal to the African Union to end its suspension. Burhan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TransitionalSovereigntyCouncil\/posts\/437553824478001\">made the request<\/a> in a meeting with DRC foreign minister and AU envoy Christophe Lutundula. The AU <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f34a9779-b1eb-43e0-a25c-37b802366b89\">has suspended Sudan<\/a> until the military hands power back to civilian authorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also on the agenda: GERD. <\/strong>Burhan and Lutundula discussed the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), <a href=\"https:\/\/asharq.com\/latest-news\/4dj4IgmgOtTRLe2xhv3qhC\/\">Asharq<\/a> reports, citing unnamed sources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lutundula is now heading to Egypt<\/strong> <strong>to discuss the GERD with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi<\/strong>, Asharq\u2019s sources said. We imagine that the two will also discuss Sudan\u2019s restoration to the AU, which Egypt has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africaintelligence.com\/eastern-and-southern-africa_diplomacy\/2021\/11\/04\/cairo-fights-khartoum-s-corner-at-african-union,109702757-eve\">reportedly been lobbying for<\/a> behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE, IN LIBYA-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Libya\u2019s interim prime minister has joined the presidential race:<\/strong> Abdul Hamid Dbeibah yesterday filed his papers to run in Libya\u2019s presidential election next month, complicating further an already fraught process being framed by disputed election rules and divisive candidates. Dbeibah\u2019s fast-and-loose approach to public spending is likely to make him the frontrunner in any ballot, but contested rules passed by the House of Representatives that require a sitting PM to step down three months prior to an election technically ban him from running. The country\u2019s electoral commission and courts will determine which candidates are eligible to stand in the coming weeks. Other candidates to have entered the race include: <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/312e7f5f-7dcd-4d2f-aa93-b1951165c7b2\">Colonel Gaddafi\u2019s son Saif<\/a>, and eastern London Metropolitan University\u2019s School of Art has a course called <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.londonmet.ac.uk\/module-catalogue\/record.cfm?mc=AR7006\">\u201cForgetting of Air,\u201d<\/a> looking at how air is understood by the body and mind. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/world-university-rankings\/carnegie-mellon-university\">Carnegie Mellon University<\/a> allows students to major in bagpipe performance, Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/world-university-rankings\/kyoto-seika-university\">Kyoto Seika University<\/a> opened the world\u2019s first faculty for studying manga, and in India\u2019s Assam Agricultural University, you can get a degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/student\/blogs\/ten-most-unusual-degrees-world\">tea husbandry and technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we look at some of the weird and wonderful university degrees that can be studied in Egypt. <strong>Here\u2019s our round-up:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical computing and the Internet of Things B.Sc. (EUE):<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/eue.edu.eg\/\">European Universities in Egypt (EUE)<\/a> offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/eue.edu.eg\/program\/computer-science-physical-computing-and-the-internet-of-things-bsc\/\">B.Sc. in physical computing<\/a> \u2014 which involves creating or using hardware devices that interact with the world around them \u2014 and one of its key applications, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_of_things\">Internet of Things (IoT)<\/a>. Core modules include introductions to programming, databases and advanced data techniques, and intelligent signal processing. Other modules include numerical math, web development, software design, and computer security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual reality B.Sc. (EUE): <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eue.edu.eg\/program\/computer-science-virtual-reality-bsc\/\">EUE\u2019s B.Sc. in virtual reality<\/a> prepares students to enter jobs in sectors spanning creative industries, video games, education and training. Along with modules in programming, web development, and the fundamentals of computer science, the degree program offers dedicated modules in areas like 3D graphics and animation, mobile development and interaction design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Game development<\/strong> <strong>B.Sc. (EUE): <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/eue.edu.eg\/program\/computer-science-games-development-bsc\/\">EUE games development B.Sc.<\/a> is not all fun and games, drawing on a range of subject areas, including computer graphics, interaction design and AI. In addition to the standard computer science modules of numerical and discrete math, algorithms and data structures, web development, there\u2019s object-oriented programming, computer security, and graphics programming. The degree program also has modules dedicated to AI, VR, games development, 3D graphics and animation, and interaction design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethical hacking and cybersecurity B.Sc. (The Knowledge Hub): <\/strong>TKH\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tkh.edu.eg\/programmes\/coventry-ethical-hacking\/\">B.Sc. in ethical hacking and cybersecurity<\/a> aims to provide knowledge and skill sets on how to protect computer networks and the commercially-sensitive information stored in them. The course offers training in the theory and practice of cybersecurity, hacking, digital forensics, and the computer science that underpins them all. Foundation-year modules include math, statistics, applied science and engineering, and academic English. Year two offers modules in the law and ethics of cybersecurity and the fundamentals of digital forensics. Year three involves an even deeper dive into web security, applied forensics, platforms and operating systems, and cybersecurity careers. The final year includes modules in security auditing and monitoring, practical cryptography and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reverse_engineering\">reverse engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robotics, control and smart systems (RCSS) M.Sc. of engineering (AUC):<\/strong> This <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.aucegypt.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=37&poid=6451&returnto=1853\">M.Sc. at the American University in Cairo (AUC)<\/a> is designed to prepare graduate students for careers that use RCSS in industry, education and research. As smart systems become more widely available and robotics becomes more deeply integrated into different industries \u2014 whether in the form of drones delivering packages, mechanical arms sorting products on a supply chain, or self-driving cars \u2014 the demand for roboticists will reach unprecedented heights. Courses in AUC\u2019s M.Sc. include robotics, kinematics, dynamics and control, mechatronics, intelligent automated manufacturing, computational intelligence, and the design and application of networked control systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Motorsports engineering B.Eng. (EUE):<\/strong> In <a href=\"https:\/\/eue.edu.eg\/program\/motorsports-engineering\/\">this degree program<\/a>, students learn strategies to design and develop motor vehicles used for racing, as well as products in the automotive sector. They\u2019re also given a solid grounding in general engineering \u2014 including engineering analysis, mechanics, and fluid dynamics. The degree\u2019s foundation year offers courses in basic math, ICT, and design. Year one focuses on engineering science. Year two has courses in instrumentation and interfaces, software development, design and manufacture. Year three has compulsory modules in areas including engineering simulation and advanced computer-aided design, and optional modules in areas including <a href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/openview\/9a6a28e9d1a2cf3996407a81b6aef796\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=44644\">computer-aided tribology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This degree is highly practical,<\/strong> with designing and manufacturing a race car a key part of the final year requirements.
