Announced <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0c47350d-f29a-48b5-8594-8c13735eac84\">last week<\/a>, the framework clarifies the capital requirements, shareholder structure and regulatory responsibilities SPAC founders will need to comply with.<\/p><p><strong>HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>EgyptAir has suspended until further notice direct flights to and from Toronto<\/strong> starting today, according to a statement cited by state news agency MENA. This comes a day after Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/51abfd0f-ec95-4485-bfa8-0007e568c0c8\">barred<\/a> entry to non-citizens who have travelled from or through Egypt in the previous 14 days. Citizens and permanent residents traveling to Canada from or through Egypt are required to stop in a third country and obtain a negative covid-19 molecular test before you continue onward to Canada. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/news\/2021\/11\/government-of-canada-introduces-additional-measures-to-address-covid-19-omicron-variant-of-concern.html\">The full regulations are here.<\/a><\/p><p><strong>OPEC+ begins its two-day meeting today<\/strong> to decide whether or not it will move ahead with a planned ramp-up of oil output as of next month. It\u2019s not entirely clear which way the oil cartel will go: Some analysts expect OPEC+ will postpone ramping up supplies after US President Joe Biden decided last month to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c881293b-debd-49bd-8243-00c63ef98242\">tap into reserves<\/a> and release 50 mn bbl of crude. OPEC+ was expected to increase production by 400k bbl\/d as of January, while others suggest the group could decide to step back and take stock of the effect of Biden\u2019s oil dump and the Omicron variant on markets, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-30\/oil-rises-after-slump-as-investor-focus-swings-to-opec-meeting?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>PSA- Keep an eye on the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.egcovac.mohp.gov.eg\/#\/home\">Health Ministry\u2019s vaccine website<\/a><\/strong><strong> today to see whether you can<\/strong> <strong>register for a booster shot <\/strong>if you\u2019re a senior citizen, have a qualifying chronic medical condition, or are classified as medical staff. Cabinet spokesman Nader Saad had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0HRtV2yQDsQ%5D\">said earlier this week<\/a> that booster shot registration would open yesterday provided you were in a qualifying category and had been fully vaccinated for at least six months. We tried yesterday and again this morning immediately before dispatch, but were unable to find an option to register for a booster.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2021\/12\/Moko_1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"enterprise\"><\/p><p><strong>What do you do when you\u2019ve finished your MBA, but decide you never really wanted to <\/strong><strong>be in the finance <\/strong><strong>industry rat race in the first place? We can think of no higher praise.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Is Erdogan running a country, or auditioning for The Apprentice?<\/strong> Turkish finance minister Lutfi Elvan became the latest in a growing list of economic policymakers to be fired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who appears to be on a one-man mission to rebrand Turkey as a Mugabe-era Zimbabwe-on-the-Med. Elvan was apparently not on board with the president\u2019s alt-economics, which has led to the TRY losing a third of its value in the last month alone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-01\/erdogan-replaces-finance-minister-as-rate-cuts-deepen-rifts?srnd=premium-middle-east&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3afaf07c-0e91-4882-bd1c-6f0fd2c60fde\">the FT<\/a> have more.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a><strong> Omicron reaches the Gulf: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spa.gov.sa\/2308724\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mohapuae\/status\/1466164254856384519?s=20\">the UAE<\/a> became the first countries in the Gulf to report cases of Omicron yesterday. Neither country disclosed where the patients had travelled from: The UAE said the patients came from \u201can African country via an Arab nation,\u201d while Saudi cited a \u201cNorth African country.\u201d Cue suspicious looks at the next Arab League meeting.<\/p><p><strong>And the US:<\/strong> The variant has also been detected in the US for the first time in a woman who recently travelled to San Francisco from South Africa.<\/p><p><strong>It was all going so well in the markets\u2026<\/strong> Global stocks rebounded yesterday following Tuesday\u2019s Fed-induced sell-off, with markets in Europe and Asia all closing strongly in the green. In the US, stocks saw strong gains for most of the day and looked on course to recoup much of their losses the day before.<\/p><p><strong>Then the news that Omicron had been discovered in the US dropped:<\/strong> Stocks saw their biggest reversal since April 2020, with the S&amp;P 500 going from 2% in the green to losing 1.2%. Combined with Tuesday\u2019s 1.9% drop, the benchmark index has had it\u2019s worst two-day sell-off since October 2020. Data for inflation typically appears on the 10th of every month, but is moved up one day if that falls on a Friday.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interest rates:<\/strong> The Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee will hold its final meeting for the year to review interest rates on Thursday, 16 December.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>Young professionals can now apply for the recently-launched McKinsey Forward <\/strong><strong>program <\/strong>which focuses on leadership, business, and the transition to digital, McKinsey announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Forward-Launch-Press-Release_ENG.pdf\">press release (pdf)<\/a>. Emad El Din Mostafa, head of Chemical Industries Holding Company, told us yesterday that a virtual roadshow targeting potential institutional investors is now underway and the transaction should close before the end of the year, confirming a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cd0307b2-f298-4860-aa32-8c395f14f575\">timeline first disclosed<\/a> by Public Enterprises Minister Hisham Tawfik last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The offering price hasn\u2019t been determined yet<\/strong>: The price will be \u00b110% of the average share price during the 90 days prior to the sale, Mostafa said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Years in the making:<\/strong> Abu Qir has pushed back the secondary stake sale several times since being announced in 2018, with the state\u2019s privatization program suffering delays thanks largely to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/82f7037f-4711-42cd-a7d1-7f4f6ab1f06e\">global market turmoil<\/a> and then the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Riding the e-Finance wave:<\/strong> Abu Qir would be the second state-owned company to tap the EGX this year, following in the footsteps of e-Finance, which completed the EGX\u2019s biggest IPO in years <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/23beb734-9f6f-4c55-9143-7c6935ecf804\">in October<\/a>, raising some USD 370 mn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not a bad time to be in the Egyptian fertilizer business:<\/strong> International fertilizer prices have been on a tear this year due to a combination of supply shortages, surging demand, and spiking energy costs. Where companies in other parts of the world are suffering through the energy crisis, Egyptian producers have been shielded due to the government\u2019s price cap, which has helped Abu Qir capitalize on the high-price environment. The company reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1921d091-aafd-4921-a856-26c56db83328\">30% rise in net income<\/a> during FY 2020-2021, and saw its quarterly earnings <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ac59f432-7e79-4724-96cc-36b255e2f052\">almost double to EGP 1.3 bn<\/a> in 1Q 2021-2022, which it attributed to higher international prices and strong demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We can expect more of the same in the coming months:<\/strong> The government last month allowed companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9dc7bcd9-bdf0-4f63-9d57-ea812e67dd90\">hike their prices of subsidized fertilizer<\/a> by 50% to EGP 4.5k per ton. This will help offset the higher natural gas prices, which were <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f95278a5-2fa0-49f9-970b-e0249de43b6d\">recently hiked<\/a> by 28% by the government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The impressive earnings haven\u2019t been reflected in the company\u2019s share price<\/strong>, which is down more than 9% year-to-date, closing yesterday\u2019s session at EGP 18.8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abu Qir\u2019s offering should kickstart more <\/strong><strong>sales<\/strong> of stakes in other state companies as part of the resurrected state privatization program, Public Enterprises Minister Hisham Tawfik told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/egypt-list-abu-qir-fertilizers-local-exchange-within-month-2021-11-18\/\">Reuters<\/a> last month, adding that four companies are expected to tap the local stock market in the first half of 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>e-Finance was the first of five state-owned companies that could <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b90b5254-2ce1-47f0-b1a9-f1082077ef28\">tap the bourse<\/a><\/strong><strong> before the end of the current fiscal year in June.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/eb7a605f-1344-4470-9dad-78f4cb493d20\">Candidates<\/a> for IPO include Ghazl El Mahalla football club (a small sale appealing to retail investors, but proof of concept for giant Al Ahly, which could follow) and Banque du Caire (a potential blockbuster with wide appeal). In the same month, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ebbd987a-341d-42af-a2af-cc022d2c0c87\">private sector firms reported<\/a> the fastest rise in input costs in more than three years, primarily due to supply shortfalls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Legislators are now reconsidering:<\/strong> The House Planning and Budgeting Committee could press pause on the VAT amendments if it believes the tax hikes will fuel further inflation, committee deputy Yasser Omar told Enterprise yesterday. The committee has not come to a final decision on whether to postpone the bill, he said, without stating when MPs could decide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep your eyes peeled:<\/strong> Our next insight into how prices are faring will come on Sunday with the release of November\u2019s PMI figures. Capmas and the central bank will publish November\u2019s official figures a few days later on 9 December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The amendments in detail:<\/strong> From what we know, the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0809f68c-1e9c-4423-b43e-29da02a8451e\">proposed bill<\/a>would swap the 5% schedule tax on crackers and sweet pastries with the standard 14% VAT rate. Most commercial advertising would be subject to the tax instead of the 20% stamp tax on ads, and tourists would be allowed to claim VAT rebates. The rent or purchase of commercial and administrative property would also be subject to a new 1% schedule tax. Beijing pledged to lend USD 40 bn in investment, credit lines, trade finance and special drawing rights to African nations over the next three years, Chinese president Xi Jinping announced at this week\u2019s Forum on China\u2013Africa Cooperation. This is a third less than the USD 60 bn China pledged at the previous two summits.<\/p><p><strong>The news comes as China has denied it has plans to take over Uganda\u2019s only international airport <\/strong>if the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/rates-bonds\/china-rejects-allegations-it-may-grab-ugandan-airport-if-country-defaults-loan-2021-11-29\/\">defaults on a USD 200 mn facility<\/a> it took from Beijing to expand the facility. \u201cA parliamentary probe last month concluded that <strong>China had imposed onerous conditions on the loan<\/strong>, including potential forfeiture of the airport in case of default, sparking public outrage,\u201d Reuters reports.<\/p><p><strong>Afghanistan will likely suffer one of the worst economic meltdowns in history <\/strong>within a year following the Taliban\u2019s takeover, according to new data published by the UNDP, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/465d3d35-af55-49c7-a9b8-0395550d9cdf\">FT<\/a> reported. Speaking to us this week is David Owen, economist at IHS Markit (<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/david-owen-5670787b\">Linkedin<\/a>). Edited excerpts from our conversation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m David, and I\u2019m an economist at <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ihsmarkit.com\/index.html\">IHS Markit<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> From where I live in the UK, I cover the PMIs \u2014 the purchasing managers\u2019 index \u2014 for a number of regions. I studied economics at the undergraduate level at the University of Bath and then again for my Masters degree at the University of Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As part of the PMI team, we cover business surveys across the world.<\/strong> I\u2019m involved in all parts of that, so I cover Egypt and many other countries across the Middle East and Africa, as well as the UK. I also work on combining all of our data into different global indices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every month, I search through the data and look for the next exciting insight.<\/strong> It really covers a wide range of information, so you get to see the economy from a global perspective, and get to see what the next emerging trend is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve been covering Egypt\u2019s PMI for four years, ever since I joined the PMI team.<\/strong> The Egypt PMI is often quite a complicated one \u2014 you really need to get behind the headline number and look at the sub-indices to tell the whole story, after which it then gives a lot of rich detail on the economy's performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I always start my day<\/strong> <strong>with a good breakfast [laughs]<\/strong>; a nice big pot of cereal and a piece of toast as well. I\u2019ve got a fairly simple morning routine. I\u2019ll try to do a little bit of reading sometimes. Generally, the Bible, but it might also be a novel or something else. I\u2019m usually out of the door very quickly to head to the office. We\u2019ve been working from the office for the past few months and I love working in the office, so I\u2019m always looking forward to getting there and seeing people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We worked from home for about 18 months during the pandemic.<\/strong> It was a very long period and it very much turned the job on its head. Working on your own and not as collaboratively as before really called for a different way of working and thinking and trying to develop our products, which was harder in a way when working from home. It\u2019s definitely easier to get distracted by the next news item or something like that when working from home, and not having that \u201cpeer pressure\u201d makes it a very different environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve found that since getting back, ideas flourish a lot better and we get more work in as a team in the office. <\/strong>We have a flexible model at our office and I very much just want to get to the office and see people. I\u2019m working from home as we speak because it\u2019s easier for calls and Zoom meetings, but most of the time I like to be physically there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I get my news from the Financial Times, BBC, and I look out for news from Egypt and the Middle East.<\/strong> They keep me away from work sometimes [laughs], especially at the height of covid-19, it was like, \u201coh what\u2019s going on now, what\u2019s changed.\u201d I\u2019m sure what\u2019s happening now with Omicron is going to affect the PMI as well, so we\u2019re back in the hot seat of seeing the first real data of how it\u2019s going to affect activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If we\u2019re running surveys, we\u2019ll be going through the data to start the day. <\/strong>Then, either I or another economist will pour over it and search for the most interesting insights. Then, we\u2019ll draft up our reports, looking over what we did the day before. The focus is mostly on getting the report done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If we\u2019re past the start of the month, we\u2019re spending the day working out ways that we can develop our product to expand into different places or sectors<\/strong>, and new ways of looking at the PMI. It often ends up being a half-and-half structure, so half of the month we\u2019ll be head down, typing up the reports, and the other half is a bit more creative. And we have a table tennis table in our office. If we\u2019re not head down, then I\u2019ll be challenging my colleagues to a game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I enjoy the PMIs, and there\u2019s definitely new things coming that I\u2019m excited about. <\/strong>I\u2019ll be working on developing some of the new data I\u2019ve been creating recently. I\u2019ve been looking at how we can harness the qualitative data into new indices, and I\u2019m still working on ways that the data can be developed and improved upon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m a classic 9-5 person.<\/strong> I really value the time off that I have and my work-life balance. And I try to maintain that whilst working from home as well. I always like to end my day with a run, so I try to finish in time to do that. Then I like to just cook some dinner and have some time to relax, especially while working from home, because otherwise I\u2019d be spending numerous hours at the laptop, and not really getting away from it. So I always make time to get away for a little break during the day and make sure I end the day well. Very traditional, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m a massive advocate for the cinema, so I\u2019m down to go to the cinema at least once a week.<\/strong> I went to watch a film this last weekend called King Richard, which is about the father of Serena and Venus Williams, and it was a very interesting biopic, very inspirational. I would recommend that. But in general, films are my go-to place to relax, and just escape I guess to another world. It\u2019s cinema over TV for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You know the phrase \u201cyou have to be able to walk before you run\u201d? Someone last week told me, \u201cyou have to run before you can walk.\u201d<\/strong> Sometimes, you think you\u2019re not as good as something that you are, but you can grow faster than you think. That was really interesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I think I\u2019ve found more value in community since the pandemic, in having rapport with people.<\/strong> It\u2019s important to build connections with colleagues and friends, and really keep that strong. When we were at the peak of the pandemic, I felt the need to go out and strengthen my close connections.
