OF GOOD NEWS- M&amp;As will be on the fast-track in the <\/strong><strong>Farid era. <\/strong>The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) said in <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/8\/FRa-and-GAFI-joint-committee.pdf\">a statement (pdf)<\/a> yesterday that it will work with the General Authority for Investment and Freezones (GAFI) to fast-track M&amp;As for companies under its jurisdiction. Recently appointed FRA chief Mohamed Farid understands from his time at the EGX that investors and business leaders value clarity above all else in a regulator, particularly after we saw Emirati lender FAB <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/003314c4-b1ce-48c1-8c81-d789953d2a6b\">call off its in April its bid<\/a> for EFG Hermes amid reports that FRA was slow-walking the transaction.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Some importers could be in line for a measure of relief <\/strong>as the Madbouly government looks set to announce measures that will allow the release of some of the goods that have piled up in Egypt\u2019s ports. Expect an announcement as early as today, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said last night (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KB3XlVrSzlg\">watch, runtime: 1:13:18<\/a>), with the measures coming into effect later this week. Maait did not get into policy specifics ahead of the announcement.<\/p><p><strong>^^ That wasn\u2019t all from Maait:<\/strong> We have the full rundown on his presser in the news well, below.<\/p><p><strong>In the background: <\/strong>A week of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f87bd35b-2c1a-4286-a5ab-628ba462b0c7\">speculation<\/a> that policymakers are looking for ways to ease the requirements to use letters of credit (L\/Cs) for some imports, which since being <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f1237459-2827-438d-96c3-8fe7a8dce26e\">introduced by the central bank in March<\/a> have made it almost impossible for importers to get most goods into the country. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has met with the new central bank governor, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dae4c989-925c-4e8d-8569-47c697d76ff6\">Hassan Abdalla<\/a>, and Trade and Industry Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f87bd35b-2c1a-4286-a5ab-628ba462b0c7\">Ahmed Samir<\/a> to discuss allowing importers to purchase certain goods \u2014 including raw materials and manufacturing essentials \u2014 via documentary collection rather than L\/Cs.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>EGP WATCH- <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The EGP continued to slide yesterday, hitting 19.26 against the USD <\/strong>amid continuing speculation that the currency will be allowed to continue sliding against the greenback. The currency has now fallen more than 22% against the USD since the devaluation in March and is now just 30 piasters away from its all-time-low of 19.56 set in 2016.<\/p><p><strong>Deval, not default:<\/strong> \u201cStrong positive catalysts\u201d in the form of support from the IMF and our GCC friends mean the economy will likely avoid a default, Standard Chartered MENA economist Carla Slim told Bloomberg TV yesterday (<a href=\"https:\/\/bloom.bg\/3wFk7tD\">watch, runtime: 05:20<\/a>). Instead, \u201cwe\u2019ll see the adjustment happen on the currency basis,\u201d Slim said, becoming the latest market watcher to predict a further devaluation of the EGP.<\/p><p><strong>Slim predicts a gradual 10-15% devaluation over the coming months<\/strong>, adding her voice to growing <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/59267664-f00a-4c2d-9867-7e8314890a5e\">expectations<\/a> that the central bank\u2019s new leadership will manage the depreciation over time to avoid stoking inflation, rather than in a 2016-style shock move.<\/p><p><strong>DATA POINT-<\/strong> Natural gas production at the Zohr supergiant natural gas field averaged 2.7 bn cubic feet per day in FY 2021-2022, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2p84sms6\">Oil Ministry figures<\/a> out yesterday. Zohr, one of the Mediterranean\u2019s largest gas fields, also produced an average 5k barrels of condensate a day, the statement said.<\/p><p><strong>The more gas, the better:<\/strong> Egypt is trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d8825220-3a11-4b4f-85d0-10a069902e3a\">maximize its natural gas exports<\/a> to bring in vital hard currency revenues, and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/613a0e7e-2a74-4d1b-8b28-0c9660944559\">inked an agreement<\/a> with Israel and the European Union that will see it ramp up shipments across the Mediterranean. European appetite for natural gas will be particularly strong this winter in the absence of additional supplies from Russia.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2-<\/strong> <strong>Is Alex Medical back in play?<\/strong> Regular readers may remember how last year\u2019s bidding war for healthcare provider Alex Medical <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ad19be3f-8f1a-494f-933b-2462e348c032\">fizzled out<\/a>. It may be that the Alex Medical is back in play after Tawasol Holdings and LimeVest sent <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/8\/29-08-2022-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D8%A7%D9%82%D9%89-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B3%D9%83%D9%86%D8%AF%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%86%D9%87%D8%A7%D8%A6%D9%89.pdf\">a letter (pdf)<\/a> to the Financial Regulation Authority (FRA) yesterday offering to purchase 74% of the company at EGP 47.67 a share. The revision reflects approximately 1.3 mn additional shares issued by Alex Medical to raise capital since the consortium's last bid to purchase the 74% stake at <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8c06421e-7c3e-41fe-9f7f-eb6fce2ba842\">EGP 52 a share<\/a> in June 2021, the letter reads. Tawasol already <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a108ea38-12e7-4974-9c7c-e191893d0399\">owns 26%<\/a> of Alex Medical, meaning an acquisition would give the consortium 100% ownership. At the time of dispatch, it is unclear how many other interested parties are still in play for acquisitions of the company. We\u2019ll be following up on the story in the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled.<\/p><p><strong>In context: <\/strong>2021 was a big year for healthcare M&amp;A, ending with the late-December announcement of the transaction that saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/48fafa45-5626-45fd-844a-22f97aa660db\">unit of CI Capital take a 23% stake<\/a> in Cleopatra Hospitals after Fahad El Khater\u2019s Alameda Healthcare called off its merger with the EGX-listed business. Healthcare was the top sector for <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/13ff6b75-266e-40ce-865a-fa0c3487d475\">inbound M&amp;A activity<\/a> in Egypt last year and number three (behind oil and gas and real estate) in total transaction value, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/db1dc8a7-f010-4c1e-a656-a4b11bb806fa\">according to our in-house M&amp;A tracker<\/a>.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- Attention, Egyptian Premier League fans:<\/strong> Games will start earlier next season to comply with the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34592f12-233d-4901-ae0a-b210c9ca855e\">measures to reduce public electricity consumption<\/a>, Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy told ON Time Sports (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vrU4m89b0y8\">watch, runtime: 6:23<\/a>). With the recent narrative around the economy being dominated by concerns about the currency and Egypt\u2019s access to FX, Maait sought to refocus the conversation on the ministry\u2019s recent fiscal achievements, pointing to years-long trends of solid GDP growth and rising tax revenues, a decent primary surplus, and a solid track-record of narrowing the budget deficit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The message? \u201cKeep calm and carry on\u201d<\/strong> amid concerns about inflation, calls for a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f0cf51a0-1c76-4199-9938-f5fce0c3bc7c\">further devaluation of the EGP<\/a>, and investor fears about the country\u2019s external debt position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NEW INT\u2019L DEBT SALES IN THE WORKS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt plans to issue CNY-denominated bonds worth more than USD 500 mn<\/strong>, Maait said. Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4c4bc259-7d58-436e-b5c6-614c15b0e534\">Maait told us<\/a> that Egypt is in talks with Chinese officials to issue panda bonds and is still on the hunt for bookrunners for the issuance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And another Samurai bonds issuance in the pipeline \u2026 this time green? <\/strong>The government is also in discussions to issue green samurai bonds, Maait said. Egypt had hoped to sell shares in as many <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/341bd556-a758-49d4-9aa9-1852ae8a3d9f\">as 10 state-owned companies<\/a>on the EGX in 2022, before Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine upended the global economy. Officials have since then <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ad594bfd-50a6-46b2-a0f8-598df16b006a\">suggested<\/a> that strategic stake sales will be the way to go in the foreseeable future thanks to the volatility in global markets, which have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6bafb238-9ada-4c08-9846-30e51c6203ef\">two IPOs postponed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8bf3e0e2-6738-4499-bbf6-9d58c11f317f\">one fail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPGRADED FORECASTS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Maait used the presser to unveil new figures from FY 2021-2022<\/strong> and announced updated forecasts for the current fiscal year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The ministry now expects the budget deficit to narrow to 5.6%<\/strong> this year and 5.0% in FY 2023-2024, down from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/754262b4-f1df-4206-b9c2-f8bf1868c135\">6.1%<\/a> last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asharqbusiness.com\/article\/41161\">Bloomberg Asharq<\/a> reported Maait as saying. The government forecast this year\u2019s deficit to come in at <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/69470760-13ca-4936-83f2-59c11fea41f7\">6.1% in the budget<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The <\/strong><strong>primary surplus<\/strong><strong> will rise to 1.6%<\/strong> for the current fiscal year, up 0.1 percentage points from its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/69470760-13ca-4936-83f2-59c11fea41f7\">budget forecast<\/a> and 1.3% in FY 2021-2022.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The debt-to-GDP ratio rose from a <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bd5bd303-07b1-4581-93a6-ca7b21649143\">forecasted 85%<\/a><\/strong><strong> to 85.3%<\/strong> during last fiscal year, thanks to the changes in the exchange rate, Maait said. The ratio remains well within FinMin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f1aed811-8e9a-412d-ba3f-47159fbb227d\">previous target<\/a> of less than 90%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tax revenues were up 18.7% y-o-y to EGP 990 bn<\/strong> during FY 2021-2022, beating the ministry\u2019s forecast of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/54bbc7a3-bd76-498b-bc12-839981fad55e\">EGP 950 bn<\/a>, as the state pushes to integrate the informal economy into a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/18d53df7-c601-478e-8d52-5674b63b988f\">new, digitized tax system<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MAAIT VS. One such story the minister singled out: Reports that the IMF is trying to impose tough conditions in return for a loan \u2014 such as reforming bread subsidies and cutting back on social spending \u2014 which he said were untrue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Trump was to Jim Acosta, Maait was to Al Arabiya:<\/strong> The minister singled-out the Saudi broadcaster for particular criticism after it inaccurately quoted him as saying that the government is preparing measures to make hard currency available for certain industries during the presser. \u201cI never said that; The move comes as part of state efforts to localize the industry, the sources reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details: <\/strong>The complex \u2014 which could be located in Suez, Minya or Aswan \u2014 would house silicone, polysilicon, chip-cutting, solar cell, glass, and PVC plastics factories, as well as a station to power the facility. The electricity, military production, planning and trade ministers are all reportedly part of the negotiations with Chinese firms to build the project and are also in talks with Chinese banks for a long-term, low-interest loan to finance it. Asharq\u2019s sources did not disclose a timeframe for the talks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China has been eyeing a project like this for years: <\/strong>An unnamed Chinese firm was reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d0bfb721-f2ee-430b-92dd-4d900d98bed6\">looking to build two facilities<\/a> to produce solar panels with a combined annual capacity of 5 GW in Aswan and Zaafarana back in 2020, two years after <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/12\/20\/german-egyptian-alliance-looking-into-establish-solar-panel-plant-in-egypt\/\">talks<\/a> with China\u2019s Golden Concord Group (GCL) over a similar project broke down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local solar panel manufacturers have struggled with high input prices + a shortage of parts: <\/strong> Local solar panel manufacturers have been hit hard in the past year by the global chip shortage, which sent prices of solar cells soaring, as well as higher input prices on the back of the commodities crunch. \u201cLocal solar panel manufacturing is no longer viable without a governmental strategy to support the industry,\u201d Mohammad Makhlouf, chairman and CEO of local manufacturing solar company Sunprism, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7fc8a266-0be1-4f43-b69b-df539bd1a925\">told us back in April<\/a>. The company hopes to raise \u201ca significant amount\u201d in the investment round, KarmSolar CEO Ahmed Zahran told Enterprise, but stopped short of disclosing the target sum or how much equity will be on offer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>The round should take three to six months to close, Zahran said, adding that the company has already registered interest from European, Asian and American investors. KarmSolar has tapped US-based Synergy Consulting to advise on the transaction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The capital injection will help grow the company\u2019s existing power generation and distribution business<\/strong> and allow it to push into new markets in the region, Zahran said, without naming any specific countries. The factory will be able to produce 300 mn vaccines every year, making it the <a href=\"https:\/\/gennecs.com\/gennvax-facility\/\">largest of its kind<\/a> in the MENA region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The vaccines:<\/strong> The company will produce jabs included in the country\u2019s national immunization program, including for HPV, polio, hepatitis A and B, and others, co-founder and General Manager Nibal Dahaba told us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The finance:<\/strong> The company is lining up capital from foreign investors including regional and global institutions, as well as family offices in Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Egypt, El Daba said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timeline:<\/strong> The factory will begin producing ready-to-fill vials by 2026 and is expected to start producing antigens for the vaccines by 2029 after it has received accreditation from the World Health Organization (WHO), Dahaba said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accreditation just got easier for Egyptian firms:<\/strong> Egyptian medical authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ff3208a5-eb2b-4c01-89c4-fefb817a9d15\">received<\/a> the WHO\u2019s second-highest regulatory classification \u2014 the ML-3 level of national vaccine regulation \u2014 earlier this month, which allows local firms to apply to the WHO to have their products pre-qualified and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/regulation-prequalification\/eul\">listed for emergency use<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This will be essential for Gennecs\u2019 export ambitions:<\/strong> The classification will eventually allow companies to export vaccines manufactured in Egypt. \u201cWHO prequalification is a must if you need to be accredited and start being a global player,\u201d Dahaba said. \u201cIt will allow us to export all over the world.\u201d The company plans to export vaccines to all countries in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/types-support\/sustainability\/eligibility\">GAVI alliance<\/a>, which includes most of Africa, Dahaba said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where things stand now: <\/strong>The company has acquired land in an industrial zone in Greater Cairo and completed the initial design phase for the factory, with help from an Italian construction firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csv-ls.com\/en\/csv-construction-turnkey-plants-life-science\/\">CSV Construction<\/a>, Dahaba said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The facility will also have a research and development Community organizers <\/strong><strong>and local authorities helped clean it up.<\/strong> In mid-August, photos were posted to social media showing parts of Dahab\u2019s coastline dotted with thick patches of crude oil, reportedly the result of an oil spill from a vessel in Jordan\u2019s Aqaba Port. Volunteers and local environmental organizations have since led efforts to scrub the oil off the South Sinai town\u2019s shores, which sustain an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d6b6aaee-c625-48cf-9fea-61433df48f7f\">abundance of marine life<\/a> and are a huge draw for tourists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The local community stepped up fast: <\/strong>Volunteer environmental initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Sustainabledahab\/posts\/pfbid0MzNS2gSWwR6NK5UAap2yCqVmKuEbB7e8xiWiXAtLLQVKFMGgbJWVLTGFunbP9w7al\">Eco-Dahab<\/a> and the Tourism Ministry\u2019s Diving and Water Sports Chamber raised the alarm on August 16, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Sustainabledahab\/photos\/a.791794984633837\/1458097554670240\/?type=3&__xts__[0]=68.ARAnX66Zzii6qZCls1A-mLcSW20BFIq3QY79d9yPl1q5N6KwLOcmKmljGMWM1Lvqj8gqUssY6yZTXM6qXdPcqz9B78QbVS5EJVSU6_uoz98J8ceDa-14zPVtNgnCfYZQLpSzDrx2JCbQ3NCgteWoAw45aWq3hG0VUYQK_UCHH7pg9BBr9-jZUDC38_32JW1dtWUGaSpJ08h6X_e3FkEWSQzaLu6Z1pQu4aBGJsyY9TorjFGZFqMm6Iri2J99WQ6Kb7aCvpFSBy8mGfNGO9e7fjP-8mGGlCYClq54Xmem1W_GhElqPyqZTA\">posting photos of the spill to social media<\/a> alongside warnings not to enter the water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Locals immediately took to scraping and shoveling what they could off the beach into plastic bags. <\/strong>\u201cThese were all individual efforts at first so we started to organize those that were already cleaning,\u201d Nadine Wahab, founder of Eco-Dahab, told Enterprise. \u201cWe made sure they knew what to do. We spoke to consultants, we got gloves, shovels and started using 19-liter water containers with the tops cut off to store the oil we removed,\u201d Wahab says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teamwork makes the dream work: <\/strong>The Environment Ministry-affiliated Salam Center for Combating Marine Pollution in Sharm El-Sheikh surveyed the area and undertook immediate damage control, according to a ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EGY.Environment\/posts\/pfbid02EoWfDhX6iz9QTMpfgD9TRkKRyr8AtBuCHPLrq9zsX1dhVwxa7AixqFMsKQRak5wHl?__cft__[0]=AZV50S1MBoSX2dgKAGo3OhcmFFDFoPzgYdia6bYs2DjNU1xNB74pXAB5R1XhGji6ueb5Kpu8CrPbVYdeD1XUJn5yJbdJYYhKpTMHuiozOAreAq0nG1p7BxELsLKIRa1Kz_rfRGzgNP0lh6_imIMCB57sFD2h-WT3U7Tb8vebZN72pjmIn2BCSVRNbzemZPDcBj6-HM687bgrYAgvnoPTqw-n&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\">statement<\/a>. Some 50 members of the local community pitched in to remove oil from the beach, while Dahab\u2019s local authorities contracted the private cleaning company that deals with the town\u2019s waste management to take the contaminants to landfill. \u201cDay by day we learned how to better facilitate this community response, in coordination with the government,\u201d Wahab tells us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where the oil hit: <\/strong>The area visibly impacted is a stretch of about 1.5 km along Dahab\u2019s coast where clumps of crude oil had accumulated on shore, according to the Environment Ministry. That includes the neighborhoods of Eel Garden, El Assala and Zarnouk \u2014 from which some 4 tons of crude-oil contaminated waste was collected and transported to landfill, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And where it came from: <\/strong>The oil appears to have been carried on currents from Jordan\u2019s Aqaba port, where an oil spill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jordantimes.com\/news\/local\/cleanup-remaining-traces-aqaba-oil-spill-continues-%E2%80%94-aseza\">earlier this month<\/a> leaked some 11.4 tons of crude oil from a docked tanker into the Gulf of Aqaba. Tidal movements caused most of the spilled oil to settle in the port of Aqaba itself, an environment and tourism official reportedly told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jordantimes.com\/news\/local\/cleanup-remaining-traces-aqaba-oil-spill-continues-%E2%80%94-aseza\">Jordan Times<\/a>, though he added that \u201csmall traces of the polluting matter [reached] beaches at the three neighboring countries surrounding the Gulf of Aqaba [Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investigations are ongoing on both shores: <\/strong>Officials from the South Sinai protectorates have collected samples of the oil, which are being analyzed at an Environmental Affairs Agency lab in Suez to determine their source ahead of potential legal action against those responsible, the Environment Ministry said. Meanwhile, Jordanian authorities are carrying out their own \u201cjudicial investigation\u201d into the Aqaba spill, with preliminary findings suggesting it was the result of \u201ctechnical failures\u201d on the Palauan-registered vessel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradewindsnews.com\/casualties\/egypt-and-jordan-tackle-oil-spill-from-ro-ro-in-red-sea\/2-1-1283247\">Flower of Sea<\/a>. Jordan has also submitted an incident report on the spill to the <a href=\"https:\/\/persga.org\/\">Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden<\/a> (PERSGA).<\/p>\n<p><strong>We don\u2019t yet know the extent of the damage in Dahab. But crude oil contamination is no joke: <\/strong>Crude oil is toxic and can seriously harm people and animals unlucky enough to inhale, ingest, or touch it, Dr. Mahmoud Hanafy, professor of marine biology at Suez Canal University and scientific advisor to the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), tells Enterprise. The implications of oil spills for <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/oilimpacts.html\">marine life<\/a> including seabirds are dire, and can render fishing stock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/how-manage-damage-oil-spills\">unsafe<\/a> for human consumption, Dr. Hanafy explains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And once oil has spilled, it sticks: <\/strong>Skimming oil off the ocean\u2019s surface in the immediate aftermath of the spill can remove about 40% of contaminants at best, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/response.restoration.noaa.gov\/about\/media\/what-have-we-learned-about-using-dispersants-during-next-big-oil-spill.html\">US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>. It's even harder to clean an oil spill once it reaches the shore because it has spread out across a wider area and is much more difficult to extract from sand than water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The spill highlights the need for closer ties with our neighbors when it comes to conservation:<\/strong> \u201cFor the oil to have made it to our shores from the other side of the Gulf Aqaba, it had to travel about 150 km\u2014that\u2019s a lot of time to have remedied the problem had we been notified of it sooner,\u201d Hanafy says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil pollution is likely a wider problem \u2014 but more research is needed: <\/strong>Tankers transport mns of tons of hydrocarbons through the Suez Canal every year \u2014 so \u201cthere\u2019s no doubt that some of that material has seeped into the sea over the years,\u201d Hanafy says. What we don\u2019t know is what impact small-scale contamination events have had on marine ecosystems in Egypt. \u201cIt's a very understudied area of research,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For now, it\u2019s safe to reenter Dahab\u2019s waters \u2014 but the local community is on standby. <\/strong>\u201cWe aren't experts, [but] we are lucky that there seem to be very little residual effects of the oil spillI,\u201d Eco-Dahab\u2019s Wahab says. The group continues to keep a close eye on the worst-hit areas to make sure no more oil washes up. \u201cWe\u2019re asking people to be aware of any sight, smell or taste of oil in the water, just to be safe,\u201d she adds. \u201cIf anything like this were to happen again in the future, the community is more connected to official channels and we\u2019ll be prepared to more quickly coordinate a
