Monday morning. <\/strong>It feels a little bit like the summer news slowdown \u2014 a feature of both the Western and Egyptian news cycle \u2014 may be approaching as more and more people in the northern hemisphere head to the beach.<\/p><p><strong>What news we have is meaty: <\/strong>Russia\u2019s foreign minister was in town yesterday trying to reassure us on wheat supplies \u2014 and we have plenty of M&amp;A, debt market, and infrastructure news. All of that (and more) below.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>PSA #1- Metro and train fares are getting more expensive starting August<\/strong>, Transport Minister Kamel El Wazir told El Hekaya (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NJ5QUcyutaM\">watch, runti<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NJ5QUcyutaM\">me: 4:45<\/a>) last night. El Wazir said the ministry hasn\u2019t decided how big the price hikes will be, but suggested that Metro fares will likely rise by EGP 1-2.<\/p><p><strong>All means of public transport have gotten more expensive recently:<\/strong> Taxis, microbuses and buses across the country <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/59629508-f337-48ec-b80c-092a43eecb30\">raised prices by 5-7%<\/a> in response to the rising cost of fuel. Private companies including <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ff7982c7-4ab3-4841-bbb8-400e551485ef\">Uber<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7956e925-03ac-4268-8057-42146349c0d2\">Swvl<\/a> have followed suit.<\/p><p><strong>PSA #2- Egypt has not yet recorded any cases of monkeypox<\/strong> amid a global outbreak that has spread to 72 countries, including Arab nations (among them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303068657\">the UAE<\/a>), presidential health advisor Mohamed Awad Tageldin told Kelma Akhira\u2019s Lamees El Hadidi (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E4UcmFx0puI\">watch, runtime: 3:55<\/a>). The World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1ad8195d-4b65-4872-ac53-b38a9dd000aa\">declared<\/a> the outbreak a global health emergency over the weekend. Monkeypox is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/about.html\">rarely fatal, milder cousin of smallpox<\/a> and is largely being transmitted as an STD.<\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>There\u2019s no single story dominating the global front pages this morning:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/ukraine-works-resume-grain-exports-flags-russian-strikes-risk-2022-07-24\/\">Reuters<\/a> leads with the <strong>Russia-Ukraine grain agreement<\/strong> (more on this in this morning\u2019s Diplomacy section, below) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1ae3598e-24a4-459d-87d8-6151e83b5282\">Financial Times<\/a> has the latest on the race to become <strong>the UK\u2019s next prime minister<\/strong>. A report in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/07\/24\/trump-republican-primaries-endorsements-gop?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiossneakpeek&amp;stream=top\">Axios<\/a>, meanwhile, suggests that <strong>Agent Orange\u2019s political clout is on the wane<\/strong> ahead of a potential 2024 run as the Murdoch empire turns against him \u2014 and as GOP rival Ron DeSantis gains in the polls.<\/p><p><strong>FANCY SOMETHING A BIT MORE \u2026 SALACIOUS? <\/strong>Tesla and Space X boss Elon Musk and Google co-founder Sergey Brin are no longer besties after Elon allegedly slept with Brin\u2019s wife, triggering a divorce, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/elon-musk-affair-sergey-brin-wife-divorce-11658674840\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports. The front page story is getting plenty of pickup on social media.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>OFH\u2019s board will weigh in on Chimera\u2019s bid to acquire Beltone:<\/strong> Orascom Financial Holding\u2019s (OFH) board of directors will meet today to decide on Abu Dhabi investment firm Chimera Investments\u2019 bid to acquire up to 90% of Beltone Financial, CEO Nils Bachtler previously confirmed to Enterprise. OFH is the majority shareholder in Beltone Financial. Our friends at Chimera Investments <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/87891e6c-e1e4-43e2-b979-03cc61acde2a\">submitted a bid<\/a> in June at EGP 1.485 per share, valuing the company at around EGP 690 mn. The Financial Regulatory Authority gave <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fa29ca31-5b82-416f-908d-63bd5f9b7db6\">regulatory approval<\/a> to Chimera\u2019s offer last week.<\/p><p><strong>US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Mike Hammer is talking GERD in Cairo <\/strong><strong>today: <\/strong>Hammer will a diplomatic resolution to the long-running crisis over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/special-envoy-for-the-horn-of-africa-mike-hammers-travel-to-egypt-the-uae-and-ethiopia\/\">statement<\/a> from the US embassy. This is Hammer\u2019s first stop of a three-stop tour that will also take him to the UAE and Ethiopia. Egyptian experts have <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3RVUbmp\">claimed in recent days<\/a> that satellite images show that Addis Ababa has started the third round of filling the dam.<\/p><p><strong>Hammer arrives in Cairo one day after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was in town<\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/lavrov-offers-reassurance-over-russian-grain-supplies-cairo-visit-2022-07-24\/\">talk grain<\/a> and, in the words of Deutsche Welle, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/lavrov-visits-cairo-as-russia-attempts-to-break-diplomatic-isolation\/a-62576656\">break Russia\u2019s diplomatic isolation<\/a>.\u201d We have chapter and verse on the visit in this morning\u2019s Diplomacy section, below.<\/p><p><strong>Contracts for Dekheila Port dry bulk terminal will be signed today:<\/strong> The Alexandria Port Authority will sign today an agreement with a consortium of the Egyptian Group for Multipurpose Terminals, the Arab Group for Supply Chains, Gharably Integrated Engineering Company (GIECO) and Saudi conglomerate Ajlan &amp; Bros for a dry bulk terminal at the Dekheila Port, according to the Transport Ministry.<\/p><p><strong>HAPPENING TOMORROW-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The Federal Reserve starts its two-day policy meeting tomorrow<\/strong>, and the consensus is that policymakers will go ahead with a second-consecutive 75-bps rate hike as it battles to get inflation under control. US inflation reached a fresh 40-year high in June, increasing pressure on the Fed to raise rates despite warnings that it could push the economy into recession. Exporting products to Jordan will get more complicated starting September: <\/strong>Jordan will impose pre-clearance fees for Egyptian imports and mandate the use of letters of credit (L\/Cs) for financing trade with Egyptian companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alborsaanews.com\/2022\/07\/24\/1560870\">Al Borsa<\/a> reported, citing a letter from the Jordanian government. Notably, the S&amp;P\u2019s performance comes after 26% of constituents have have reported earnings having missed analyst expectations, the WSJ reports citing figures from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factset.com\/\">FactSet<\/a>. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq, which is down 25.3% YTD, has seen its shares rally 7.4% so far this month despite an overall fall of 24% in earnings among those that have reported. Big issuers including Bank of America, Netflix and Tesla posted earnings misses, but saw their share prices rally in the day or two after they announced.<\/p><p><strong>The latest of these was Twitter<\/strong>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/7\/Final-Q222-Earnings-Release.pdf\">reported (pdf)<\/a> on Friday that revenues slid 1% y-o-y to USD 1.18 bn, coming in 11% below analysts\u2019 estimates in what was its biggest revenue miss ever. That said, its share price was up 0.81% when markets closed on Friday. In addition to the same economic headwinds that plagued other tech companies, Twitter also blamed Elon Musk\u2019s buyer\u2019s remorse for the decline.<\/p><p><strong>What gives?<\/strong> For one, earnings season isn\u2019t over yet, with reports from traditional top performers such as Apple, Amazon, and ExxonMobil still to come. Apple and Amazon will both report toward the end of this week. Analysts speaking to the WSJ suggest that the pervading sentiment of pessimism could have been exaggerated, with the earning shortfalls not falling to the \u201ctrain wreck\u201d levels that investors were predicting.<\/p><p><strong>Could this rally be sustained? That depends on the Fed this week:<\/strong> The Federal Reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1ad8195d-4b65-4872-ac53-b38a9dd000aa\">is<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1ad8195d-4b65-4872-ac53-b38a9dd000aa\">expected<\/a> to go ahead with another 75 bps rate hike when it meets later this week, which analysts feel is necessary to get a grip on inflation, a major driver of lower-than-expected earnings.<\/p><p><strong>The July rally is even extending to crypto stocks: <\/strong>Shares in crypto companies, which were among the worst-hit assets of the year, appear to have also made a recovery this month, with the NYSE FactSet Global Blockchain Technologies Index now on track for its largest monthly gain since February 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-22\/crypto-stocks-get-a-boost-by-retail-traders-who-drove-meme-craze?srnd=premium-middle-east#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. The index is up 16.5% over the past 30-days \u2014 but down 59.1% YTD. Leading coin exchange company Coinbase, saw its shares rise 12.3% in the past month after earlier falling 17.8% from the start of the year.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>CLOSER TO HOME- The Gulf\u2019s market for <\/strong><strong>corporate<\/strong><strong> bonds is going through a rough patch:<\/strong> Market volatility and rising interest rates have caused the corporate bond market in the GCC to grind to a halt so far in 2022 as issuers face a choice between steep issuance premiums now or higher rates later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/gulf-bond-hopefuls-wait-wings-after-first-half-plunge-volumes-2022-07-21\/\">Reuters<\/a> says. Bond sales plunged 80% y-o-y in the first six months of the year as companies delayed issuances due to market turbulence. Unfortunately, the extent to which fresh graduates emerge from Egyptian universities with the skill sets needed in the labor market can vary considerably, our sources at law firms, startups, and companies in a range of industries tell us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which Egyptian universities do the best job of preparing fresh grads to enter the workspace?<\/strong> The short answer is that because of the way Egypt\u2019s university system works, certain universities \u2014 public or private \u2014 are particularly strong in different technical areas or disciplines. For example, Cairo University \u2014 particularly its English section \u2014 rates especially high for law graduates, says Zulficar and Partners Managing Partner Firas El Samad, while Shalakany also sees many good candidates from private universities such as GUC and BUE, says Senior Partner Moataz El Mahdy. Wafik Beshara, VP of HR at CEMEX Egypt says Assiut University has excellent mechanical and electrical engineering departments, and a good science faculty. \u201cWe see a big talent pool from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still, each institution comes with its own set of flaws and shortcomings:<\/strong> One major problem with government universities is simply the high enrollment rate compared to private universities, notes El Mahdy. El Samad also notes that a big market weakness is the reliance on rote memorization for law students. \u201cFresh graduates and even newly-hired junior associates often reflexively cite legal references, as if this is what matters. The client doesn\u2019t care about references, but about what you advise him to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many fresh grads with technical skills and experience have developed it in spite of \u2014 not because of \u2014 the university tuition they\u2019ve received:<\/strong> The startup community isn\u2019t seeing many fresh grads with the desired combination of technical skills and practical experience coming out of Egyptian universities at the moment, notes Yousef ElSammaa, managing director of venture studio firm Fibonacci Studio. \u201cWe\u2019re in a sector where you need a lot of self-development and self-teaching,\u201d notes Hussein El Kheshen, co-founder and CTO of Sakneen. \u201cI think, almost perversely, because the public university system has challenges, candidates who go through that system end up doing all the self-teaching anyway \u2014 to figure things out. No one\u2019s giving handouts.\u201d Candidates who self-teach often end up being the strongest El Kheshen sees, he notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And there\u2019s no denying that Egypt\u2019s most prestigious universities give candidates an edge with fine skills:<\/strong> Graduates from universities like AUC and GUC do have a head start in some ways, because the education styles to focus more on things like self-confidence, how students present ideas, and how they put themselves forward, notes PepsiCo Egypt HR Senior Director Naniece Fahmy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Altogether, companies look for candidates from a broad range of universities: <\/strong>\u201cWe don\u2019t put the university as a filter. We do our best to select the best candidates,\u201d notes Beshara. The key thing is to select candidates from accredited universities that don\u2019t just provide a theoretical education, but give their students exposure to different scenarios they will face in work and life, says Tarek Nour, TBS General Manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But with a dearth of plug-and-play graduates, many firms are taking steps to fill gaps themselves<\/strong>, including offering internship programs, and providing new hires with on-the-job training.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Internships are popular across industries, offering exposure to the job with the possibility of more permanent work:<\/strong> CEMEX offers a four-six week hands-on internship program targeting some 50 university students \u2014 typically from engineering, commerce, or science faculties \u2014 annually, says Beshara. After pausing for several years, HSBC is relaunching an internship program that will ask candidates to think about HSBC\u2019s market growth and customer experience, and cultivate soft skills, HSBC head of HR Moustafa Raouf tells Enterprise. The six-eight week program aims to work with 15-25 candidates this year. Internship programs are also essential for law firms to observe interns\u2019 skill sets and behavior, which El Mahdy says \u201cputs us in a better position to judge whether the student has the skills we\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Startups, too, are rolling out internships:<\/strong> Environmental startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mycellium2020\/\">Mycelium<\/a> kicked off in 2020 a three-month internship program for around 15 interns, says CEO Mohamed Fawzy. \u201cWe try to involve them as much as possible in our practical work and encourage them to share ideas. Most interns need quite a lot of introductory training on what we\u2019re doing and what a startup really is,\u201d he adds. Rabbit Mobility is also starting an internship program, notes co-founder and CEO Kamal El Soueni. This could eventually lead to permanent jobs for interns, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other side of the equation, students who proactively seek experience through meaningful internships and student activities stand out from the crowd: <\/strong>\u201cIf students have done real internships \u2014 not just summer internships, but real work experience \u2014 it makes a difference,\u201d says ElSammaa.
