The mercury is set to rise steadily from 36\u00b0C today in the capital city to 40\u00b0C by Sunday and to stay between 38-44\u00b0C as far into the future as the weather witches who run our favourite app can see.<\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORY here at home: The Madbouly is looking to attract<\/strong><strong> foreign <\/strong><strong>investors with major new projects.<\/strong> In a meeting with US and Egyptian CEOs yesterday, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said his government will launch a string of major new projects in the coming months and pledged fresh incentives to draw foreign investors into the country, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3NAjsjc\">cabinet statement<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>What\u2019s the PM cooking up? <\/strong>Data centers, LNG terminals, telecom towers, oil and gas pipelines, and wind plant upgrades are all in the government\u2019s plans, he said during a virtual meeting of the Egypt-US Business Council.<\/p><p><strong>Energy is a high priority for Egypt<\/strong>, Madbouly said, reiterating the nation\u2019s plan to become the premier East Mediterranean energy hub and establish new conventional and renewable power plants, he said.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><a id=\"tldr-story-04\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>MEANWHILE- Egypt\u2019s economy grew at a 5.4% clip in 3Q 2021-2022<\/strong> (the three months ending 30 March 2022) accelerating from 2.9% in the same period last year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/411212837715809\">figures<\/a> released by the cabinet yesterday. The figure indicates that the economy continued to rebound from the covid-induced slowdown the year prior, despite rising inflation and the commodity price shock exacerbated by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in late February.<\/p><p><strong>Growth in the January-March period slowed notably from the first two quarters of the fiscal year<\/strong>, which began on 1 July 2021. The economy expanded by <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ac19890f-00ac-42c9-97b8-ecfccc2d8e99\">9.8% in 1Q<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4d62e3f0-9d66-4bf5-8447-110e1540903c\">8.3% in 2Q<\/a>. It\u2019s not just about Ukraine: The slowdown in 3Q reflects stronger growth in the corresponding quarter last year, versus the first two quarters of the year whose GDP figures were magnified by a strong base effect.<\/p><p><strong>Full-year outlook upgraded:<\/strong> The government has revised upwards its 2021-2022 growth outlook to 6.2% on the back of the figures. The Planning Ministry had in March <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7206091d-85f9-42f4-9092-59a11e3ea203\">cut its full-year forecast<\/a> to 5.7% due to the war.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>WAIT, WAIT \u2014 there\u2019s more: Egypt\u2019s official COP27 website will launch in the coming <\/strong><strong>days<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3GhP9eJ\">cabinet said<\/a> yesterday. Two aides to US President Joe Biden are on a <strong>secret visit to Saudi Arabia<\/strong> for talks on raising oil production, improving ties between Washington and Riyadh, and an agreement between Egypt, KSA and Israel that could pave the way for an unprecedented normalization of relations between Riyadh and Tel Aviv, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/05\/25\/biden-officials-saudi-arabia-talks-oil-visit-israel-egypt\">Axios<\/a> reported, citing three current and former US officials.<\/p><p><strong>Biden could be in Riyadh next month:<\/strong> The trip comes ahead of a potential visit by Biden to the kingdom at the end of June. Sources say that the two countries need to reach an understanding on all three issues if the president is to visit the country.<\/p><p><strong>What has this got to do with us?<\/strong> Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4c95ca10-3a1e-4e99-bb71-7d7d00ec7551\">reported on Tuesday<\/a>that the Biden administration is working with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to finalize the transfer of Tiran and Sanafir islands from Egypt to Saudi Arabia, a move that it believes could lead to a normalization of ties between Riyadh and Tel Aviv.<\/p><p><strong>This comes as we continue to deepen economic ties with Israel<\/strong>, particularly on transforming Egypt into the Eastern Med\u2019s premier energy hub. It\u2019s now not expected to kick in until at least 2024. The planned pipeline will allow natural gas from the field \u2014 estimated to hold as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/03ef781e-4be2-4890-89d0-f6acd69f58b1\">4.5 tn cubic feet of natural gas<\/a> \u2014 to flow to Egypt\u2019s liquefaction facilities at Idku and Damietta for processing and shipment onward to Europe and elsewhere as liquefied natural gas (LNG).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pipeline is expected to be up and running by 2025<\/strong>, El Molla said, adding that both countries\u2019 parliaments have signed off on the plan. That\u2019s just about what the industry expected: Gas flows from the field had been projected to start <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/05\/turkey-announces-natgas-drilling-off-cyprus-egypt-eu-caution-drillers\/\">by 2024 or 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s involved? <\/strong>Israeli energy company NewMed Energy and Chevron are <a href=\"https:\/\/newmedenergy.com\/operations\/aphrodite\/\">developing the Aphrodite gas field<\/a> in partnership with Shell. We don\u2019t yet know which companies are being brought on board to build the pipeline itself. NewMed and Chevron which are also the joint developers of the two Israeli gas fields that already supply our LNG plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The project is more important than ever in light of the war in Ukraine:<\/strong> The east Mediterranean could become one of the EU\u2019s most important sources of natural gas in the coming years as it looks to wind down imports of Russian gas, which currently provide 40% of the bloc\u2019s consumption. In a plan released last week, the EU said it will invest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-61497315\">EUR 12 bn<\/a> in pipelines and LNG facilities to increase gas supplies from other producers such as Egypt and Israel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is on board:<\/strong> \u201cWe have ambitious plans to coordinate with neighboring eastern Mediterranean countries on meeting the increased demand from the EU \u2014 and the world \u2014 for LNG over the next few years,\u201d El Molla said. The minister <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/efd93e2f-38b1-4d5a-845c-55538c31513c\">said earlier this week<\/a> that Egypt will be in a position to increase exports to Europe in the next two or three years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve been working to boost our energy ties with our neighbors for some time: <\/strong>The Cairo-based <a href=\"https:\/\/emgf.org\/\">East Mediterranean Gas Forum<\/a> brings Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Italy and France together to work on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ab09a0ab-2bde-4441-973f-cdda4cb268f0\">developing regional gas assets<\/a>. The Madbouly government also late last year <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/891598e1-8197-40e4-91d6-93e212f9c000\">signed agreements<\/a> with Greece and Israel laying the groundwork to up import and re-export volumes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rising summer consumption curbs exports: <\/strong>Egypt is currently exporting around 1 bn cubic feet of LNG per day \u2014 down from exports of 1.6 bn cubic feet per day back in December, when the Idku and Damietta LNG plants were <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b05357d8-d636-4372-a069-cf77d948b1e7\">running at maximum capacity<\/a>. The meeting \u2014 which several members of cabinet also attended \u2014 came after MPs raised eyebrows <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/51f62891-ad04-47b0-93d4-1087a0721dd7\">last week<\/a> at earmarks for food subsidies and the social safety net in particular, with some arguing they should be expanded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is already a revised budget:<\/strong> \u201cBy mid-February, we had already prepared a budget that we were ready to present to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, but we were forced to revise it after war broke out in Ukraine on 24 February,\u201d Madbouly said. \u201cIt\u2019s already the case that the current budget is completely different from the original pre-war draft.\u201d Madbouly had directed the Finance Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/69470760-13ca-4936-83f2-59c11fea41f7\">in March<\/a> to rethink the budget to \u201creassess priorities,\u201d particularly as key commodity prices were soaring globally on the back of the war.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The revised budget focuses primarily on shielding the most vulnerable from the economic fallout of the war<\/strong>, including deciding against slashing bread subsidies or dramatically raising the price of fuel, the PM said. The government\u2019s fuel pricing committee raised prices by around 3% <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9aaaa681-2b1d-4712-b895-3c5d9795c8ce\">last month<\/a>, despite Brent prices rising 40% in 1Q2022. The committee is able to move the price of fuel up or down 10% at the beginning of each quarter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Balancing social security against the budget deficit:<\/strong> Civil servants got their 8% annual raises as of the beginning of April, ahead of the regular schedule that would have seen them receive raises in July, Madbouly pointed out. The move was part of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d34fde27-bb5d-4393-8c4d-b149d636663d\">a stimulus package<\/a> to mitigate the impact of the Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s (CBE) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8b55986a-5bf0-4548-a969-7607bcf4f50e\">decision to raise interest rates<\/a> for the first time in five years and the simultaneous c. 16% slide of the EGP against the greenback. \u201cThe salary increases are a type of social protection that we didn\u2019t sacrifice, even though they put a lot of pressure on the budget,\u201d Madbouly said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reducing our debt-to-GDP ratio also remains a priority:<\/strong> \u201cI know that many MPs voiced their concerns over what they described as an \u2018alarming\u2019 rise in our foreign debt levels and have suggested trimming our borrowing,\u201d Madbouly said. The firm bought a total of 1.4 mn shares in Juhayna, at an average price of EGP 8.85 per share.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baladna paid more for Juhayna shares this time around: <\/strong>The average share price in yesterday\u2019s transaction is almost 50% more than what Baladna paid to acquire <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/297a77ab-540a-4c75-b02d-12134e8d207d\">a 5% stake<\/a> in Juhayna less than three months ago, marking its entry to Juhayna. The Qatari firm bought 47.1 mn shares in Juhayna for EGP 285.8 mn in March, at an average price per share of EGP 6.07. Here\u2019s the rundown:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt Otsuka plans USD 30 mn factory:<\/strong> The local unit of Japanese pharma company Otsuka plans to invest USD 30 mn in a new factory to produce nutritional supplements and health drinks, the cabinet said in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sZyFCp\">a statement<\/a> yesterday. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egyptotsuka.com\/\">Otsuka Egypt<\/a> will export its products to GCC countries and Africa and will also sell here on the domestic market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EGP 500 mn aluminum factory in the works:<\/strong> A consortium of Egypt\u2019s Octa International and Saudi Olayan Group\u2019s Aluminum Products Company (ALUPCO) signed an MoU with the National Organization for Military Production to build an EGP 500 mn aluminum factory, a cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3yZCsUf\">statement<\/a> read. Per the MoU, Olayan will put up the full investment cost and finance the raw materials and operating equipment, as well as take responsibility for the factory\u2019s construction. Octa is an arm of the Kasrawy family\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcgeg.com\/\">Dunes Capital Group<\/a>. It says it will source the raw materials and develop, market and distribute the products. The military-affiliated authority will provide the labor and land for the factory, and contribute to its management, operation and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Snackmaker Lorenz to invest EGP 200 mn in Egypt: <\/strong>German snack food maker Lorenz Snack-World plans to invest EGP 200 mn in Egypt between 2023 and 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3NzbXJk\">Al Mal<\/a> reports, citing sources it says are in the know. The company has set up an Egyptian arm \u2014 Lorenz Snack World Egypt \u2014 and at one point owned a factory in Port Said that has since been sold, the sources said. The funding marks the final tranche of Esaal\u2019s USD 3 mn seed round, which has been funded entirely by the VC, company CEO and founder Fadi Doss told Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Esaal: <\/strong>Founded in 2018 by Doss (<a href=\"https:\/\/eg.linkedin.com\/in\/fadidoss\">LinkedIn<\/a>), the company offers clients remote health consultations with some 350 medical professionals in physical health, mental health, and nutrition. Revenues were up 55% y-o-y to EGP 1.9 bn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Revenue growth was underpinned by a strong quarter for EFG\u2019s <\/strong><strong>core businesses<\/strong> despite a challenging operating environment. Top line growth was driven by the inclusion of revenues from commercial bank aiBank \u2014 in which EFG <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a015541a-1a21-48dd-80d4-3dd23dd9d76b\">acquired a controlling stake<\/a> late last year \u2014 and solid performance at EFG\u2019s investment banking and non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs). Revenues from the group\u2019s investment bank rose 12% y-o-y to EGP 901 mn. NBFI revenues grew 34% y-o-y to EGP 601 mn, driven by microfinance platform Tanmeyah, consumer finance subsidiary valU, and the bank\u2019s factoring business. Growth in core businesses more than offset a 24% y-o-y drop in revenue generated by holding and treasury activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>aiBank + inflation push up operating costs: <\/strong>Group operating expenses were up 49% y-o-y to EGP 1.2 bn, driven by the consolidation of aiBank\u2019s operating costs and higher marketing spend at valU, which <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/38422146-4e58-4ee9-b22f-2dfec51c3f9b\">recently attracted investment from Amazon<\/a>. Expenses at the group\u2019s investment banking platform rose 16% to EGP 569 mn, largely because of inflationary pressures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More GCC + NBFI expansion ahead: <\/strong>\u201cIn the quarters to come, we will continue to focus on garnering more opportunities in the GCC and cementing our foothold there in the investment bank space,\u201d EFG Group CEO Karim Awad said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/5\/EFG-Hermes-Holdings-1Q22-Earnings-Press-Release-ENGLISH-1.pdf\">press release (pdf)<\/a>. \u201cAt the same time, our NBFI platform will continue to grow as our BNPL player valU expands its operations and Tanmeyah continues to deliver solid revenues. \u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>Elsewedy Electric\u2019s net income was up 9<\/strong><strong>%<\/strong><strong> y-o-y to EGP 760.9 mn in 1Q 2022<\/strong>, according to the company\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/5\/Elsewedy-Electric-ER-1Q2022-En-.pdf\">earnings release (pdf)<\/a>. Revenues rose 51% y-o-y to EGP 18.6 bn. The company attributed the jump in revenues to growth in its turnkey projects as well as its wires and cables segments, where new awards and higher pricing in response to inflationary pressures were reflected in its top line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The wires and cables segment accounted for half of all revenues<\/strong>, rising 48% y-o-y to EGP 9.3 bn. Turnkey projects brought in EGP 7.6 bn or 41% of all revenues, up 66% y-o-y.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elsewedy is navigating the global rise in raw materials:<\/strong> Shortages in raw materials and cargo ships \u201cremain an issue,\u201d but one the group is mitigating by redesigning products and placing larger advance orders from suppliers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they said: <\/strong>\u201cI consider our strategic efforts towards geographic and operational diversification as a major contributor to our ability to navigate the latest exchange rates\u2019 movement and its related effect on our financials,\u201d said CEO Ahmed Elsewedy. Net income from Contact\u2019s financing business rose 46% y-o-y to EGP 141 mn, which the company attributed to \u201cgrowing demand across the division\u2019s consumer finance, mortgage and commercial vehicles products.\u201d Contact\u2019s ins. income grew 39% y-o-y, adding EGP 18 mn to its bottom line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New loan products helped push the company\u2019s growth: <\/strong>Contact saw a near five-fold increase in new consumer finance, driven by growth in home interior, club membership, and education financing. Compensation for workers has already been worked out, he said, remaining tight-lipped on the details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three loss-making state-owned enterprises have been liquidated over the past four <\/strong><strong>years<\/strong>, the latest being <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9bad9da9-4715-4ca2-af68-dc753167b285\">Egyptian Iron and Steel<\/a> in 2021. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1329167\">National Cement Company (NCM)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3lLoHAI\">Egyptian Navigation Company (NNC)<\/a> were also wound down in 2018 and 2020, respectively after suffering bns of EGP in losses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tawfik is crossing his fingers for no further liquidations: <\/strong>\u201cWe hope we don\u2019t see any liquidations [after that]. It\u2019s been a whirlwind of meetings, chapmans (refresher: the local go-to drink), beautiful people, spicy food, inspiring stories, lessons learned, and relationships built.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If there was one word to describe this trip, it would be vibrant. <\/strong>The energy of the local startup scene is contagious, and we now understand why many stakeholders told us that Nigerians are inherently entrepreneurial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On our last day, our dedicated host Tomi Davies put together a reception for us with angel investors and local startups <\/strong>(pictured above). And again, we\u2019ve met some inspiring people. One of them is Yemi Keri (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/yemikeri\/?originalSubdomain=ng\">LinkedIn<\/a>), cofounder of <strong>The Rising Tide<\/strong>. Keri was able to pool together 87 investors to build an angel investors network \u2014 and here\u2019s the interesting part: <strong>they\u2019re all women. <\/strong>So far, they\u2019ve invested USD 1.8 mn in 28 startups. We also met startup celebrity Iyinoluwa Aboyeji (aka E \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eaboyeji\/\">LinkedIn<\/a>), who was a cofounder of two of Nigeria\u2019s poster children: fintech <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/flutterwave.com\/us\/\">Flutterwave<\/a><\/strong> and job placement network <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/andela.com\/\">Andela<\/a><\/strong>. Today, he is the founder and GP of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/future.africa\/\">Future Africa<\/a><\/strong> fund.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lagos and Cairo seem to be very much \u201csame, same, but different\u201d \u2014 at least that is how our trip companions feel. <\/strong>\u201cThe energy levels have been really, really high; people have been super nice and expressive. That feels very much like home,\u201d CEO of the Cairo Angels Syndicate Fund (CASF) Aly Shalakany \u2014 and trip organizer \u2014 said. The streets never sleep, and the people we\u2019ve met in the tech space are a reflection of that, he added. Adham Azzam, CEO and cofounder of fintech startup Balad, agreed, adding that \u201cthings here move very fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026which led some of us wonder whether expanding into Nigeria may make more sense for Egyptian startups than expanding into the GCC. <\/strong>Given similar market dynamics, the expansion of Egyptian startups into Nigeria and Africa in general may be more successful than moving to the East, CEO and founder of Nawaah Scientific Omar Shoukry tells us. Especially in the life sciences space, Shoukry believes that there is a greater need and opportunity in Nigeria than Dubai, for instance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And fintech seems to be the biggest player in Nigeria at this point in time. <\/strong>\u201cEvery second billboard is that of a fintech company,\u201d Azzam tells us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve also noticed that a lot of founders and investors were part of the Nigerian diaspora. <\/strong>Based on our conversations with local stakeholders, we\u2019ve realized that a lot of the active players and entrepreneurs are Nigerians who had either lived abroad or studied in another country, and decided to come back to help move their country forward through either building a company or funding startups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But building a company seems to be more challenging in Nigeria than Egypt, mainly due to problems in the traditional infrastructure.<\/strong> (Almost) every building in Lagos has a generator, which is operated at least 3-4 hours a day, due to frequent power cuts. Moreover, a lot of neighborhoods in Lagos don\u2019t have access to water, which is why they dig boreholes accompanied by micro-desalination plants, locals tell us. That makes it a lot easier to build a company in Cairo than Lagos, Shalakany suggests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can we learn from Lagos? Definitely hustling. <\/strong>\u201cThe market in Nigeria is much more competitive [than Cairo], and a lot of the founders here know that they have a tough journey ahead,\u201d Shalakany says. Since the volume of startup funding to Nigeria is crazy, competition is very high, which pushes for higher quality products and services \u2014 and pushes people to work harder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And maybe that purely digital solutions are not necessarily \u2026 solutions, especially in the fintech space. <\/strong>\u201cHere, every fintech company has a hybrid model,\u201d Azzam says. Having a business model that combines on-ground activities and physical solutions, while also providing the digital solution allows for larger market penetration, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lastly, there was one narrative that kept repeating itself: building Africa. <\/strong>Whether we were talking to entrepreneurs or investors, almost everyone was aligned on a continent-wide objective, as opposed to a country-focused one. Davies summed it up beautifully at yesterday\u2019s reception, saying: <strong>\u201cWe are building Africa \u2014 profitably and impactfully.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Big final thanks Davies and his team at TVC Labs: Mayowa and Segun Ojuri <\/strong>(along with their nine-month old son and his grandmother, who also accompanied us on our trips through Lagos). They allowed us meet the maximum number of people in such a limited time and made sure everything ran smoothly. Speaking to us this week is H\u00e5kan Emsg\u00e5rd, the Kingdom of Sweden\u2019s ambassador to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My name is H\u00e5kan Emsg\u00e5rd, I\u2019m 61 years old, and I\u2019m the Swedish ambassador to Egypt<\/strong> \u2014 a post I\u2019ve held for a little less than a year. Prior to coming to Cairo, I was the head of the Foreign Ministry\u2019s European department back in Stockholm, I served as Sweden\u2019s ambassador to the Netherlands, and I\u2019ve worked at the Finance Ministry and at an international financial institution. Altogether, that\u2019s my professional background.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The basis of my job as the ambassador is to promote relations between Sweden and Egypt across all fields.<\/strong> Our relations are very good as it already stands: We work together on political, economic, and cultural issues. If you look back in history, there have been a lot of links between the two countries. Our royal family has been very engaged over the years in archaeological research \u2014 we have a Swedish-Egyptian archaeological mission that visited Egypt last autumn, and this is something we\u2019ve been doing for many years but it deserves more attention than it has received.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perhaps the focus at the moment is to boost our economic relations<\/strong>; there\u2019s a strong interest now among Swedish companies in coming to invest in Egypt, particularly in sectors like energy, where Egypt has the ambition of becoming a regional hub. For example, a Swedish company is involved in the Egypt-Saudi electricity interconnection project, and there are plans to set up similar links with Greece and Cyprus so it\u2019s very interesting for us to be partnering on that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where I really see a bright future for our relations is the health sector.<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s introduction of its universal healthcare scheme creates lots of windows in the whole health sector. On the pharma side of things, AstraZeneca is already a very active partner to the Egyptian government, but we also have another company called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elekta.com\/company\/\">Elekta<\/a> that produces radiotherapy equipment. They\u2019re now opening a regional office in Cairo to serve the region with this high-tech equipment. So I think this is an exciting way of bringing new, modern technology to Egypt \u2014 and it means that there won\u2019t just be an investment but also the transfer and knowhow and technology from the company to Egyptian workers and the local market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m lucky in the sense that I live very close to my office \u2014 about 100 meters [laughs] \u2014 so I can wake up relatively late.<\/strong> We usually start our day at the office at 9am, starting with a small internal meeting to go through our calendars and see what events are on the agenda. I also follow the news both in Egypt and in Sweden to make sure I\u2019m updated on current events, so I read the Financial Times, New York Times, and the Economist. It\u2019s important to know what\u2019s going on in the region too with the political and economic situation. I often have lots of contact throughout my days \u2014 whether at lunches or other meetings \u2014 with Swedish companies and Egyptian authorities to sort out cooperation and troubleshoot issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re also working on becoming more active in the cultural world, so sometimes we have small events<\/strong> to promote Swedish films, writers, and the sort, which I think is important. My wife has been visiting, so we make it a point to have lunch together everyday here at the residence to spend time together, and then sometimes she is able to join me in my evening obligations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I just experienced my first Ramadan and I realized that it\u2019s a month during which you gain weight, rather than lose it [laughs].<\/strong> But I really enjoyed the experience and the atmosphere, particularly the iftar gatherings with lots of food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My days are often pretty long, because there are typically functions in the evening<\/strong> and often I have more than one invitation on the same day. I try to make a judgment call on where I can give and benefit the most to prioritize that invitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I like to wind down by reading. I read a lot about Egypt and particularly its historical developments.<\/strong> That includes ancient history but also modern history; fiction is also an important tool to help understand the culture. People\u2019s mentality and how they think is often best portrayed in fictional works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve really enjoyed traveling around Egypt. My wife and I recently traveled to Aswan<\/strong>; we did the traditional Nile cruise and spent time at the famous Old Cataract Hotel. It was a wonderful experience and I hope I\u2019m able to take more of these types of trips.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The biggest piece of advice I would give to somebody entering the diplomatic corps would be to have a little bit of patience with each new post.<\/strong> Take the time to formulate your own understanding and feelings for the job to figure out what\u2019s going to work and what you can do.
