The end of January? Already?<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re a little bit bleary-eyed this morning <\/strong>after trying to work (and study with the resident 14-year-old) while keeping tabs on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/news\/medvedev-nadal-australian-open-2022-final-sunday\">Rafael Nadal beating Daniil Medvedev<\/a> to bag a record 21st grand slam title with a come-from-behind victory in the Australian Open \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/soccer\/canada-world-cup-qualifier-canada-us-recap-jan-30-1.6333138\">Canada cruise to a 2-0<\/a>victory over the United States in World Cup qualifying (uh, sorry, American friends \u2014 or not).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oh, and the Pharaohs played last night. <\/strong>The national team managed to eek out a 2:1 victory in last night\u2019s Afcon quarter-final against Morocco, a match that was described as everything from \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/sport\/20220130-live-egypt-with-its-star-player-mo-salah-take-on-morocco-in-quarterfinals\">scrappy<\/a>\u201d to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2022\/jan\/30\/egypt-morocco-africa-cup-of-nations-quarter-final-match-report\">dismal<\/a>.\u201d The prognosis was less than hopeful after Morocco scored a penalty within the first seven minutes \u2014 but Mohamed Salah\u2019s second-half equalizer carried us into extra time, where a great run by the Liverpool star set Mahmoud Trezeguet up to clinch goal #2. What was a less than edifying spectacle from the football side of things was more than made up for by endless drama, with both sides racking up plenty of fouls. But hey, we\u2019re through \u2014 and will now face hosts Cameroon in Thursday\u2019s semi-final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday\u2019s kickoff:<\/strong> 7pm CLT.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA-<\/strong> <strong>We\u2019re looking at cold weather all week long: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=300540868771154&set=a.289008423257732\">national weather service<\/a> is predicting another cold week ahead, with Cairo seeing highs between 15-18\u00b0C and overnight lows in the single digits all week long. Strong winds will make it feel colder still, it said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a><strong> We\u2019re officially back in JPMorgan\u2019s EM bond index today: <\/strong>Egypt is rejoining JPMorgan\u2019s Emerging Markets Bond Index (EMBI) today, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait told CNBC Arabia (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ubEm1n\">watch, runtime: 5:26<\/a>), a move that could potentially bring bns of USD in new passive flows into EGP-denominated debt. Egyptian bonds will have an estimated weighting of 1.8% in the index, Maait said. Egypt will also become a constituent of JPMorgan\u2019s green bond index with a weighting of 1.2%, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia\u2019s threatened invasion of Ukraine <\/strong>remains the focus of the international press this morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UN Security Council will meet to discuss the crisis today<\/strong> \u2014 and the US is trying its best to pile on the pressure ahead of the talks, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-us-ukraine-nato-a7f028f3b7e97b791a03e2dd31da12c6\">Associated Press<\/a> reports. US lawmakers yesterday promised Moscow will face \u201cthe mother of all sanctions\u201d if it does invade its neighbor \u2014 and senators could pass legislation on the measures as soon as this week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-senate-close-deal-legislation-sanction-russia-senators-2022-01-30\/\">Reuters<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/83c195a4-d973-4e87-913b-05da93f2ce67\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potentially<\/strong><strong> relevant to us here at home: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/29\/us\/politics\/russia-sanctions-economy.html\">New York Times<\/a> is warning that the sanctions could take a \u201cwide toll,\u201d noting that top US security officials have \u201cbeen talking with executives from some of Wall Street\u2019s largest banks, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, <strong>about the stability of the global financial system in the wake of potential sanctions<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, Ukrainian leaders remain unflappable <\/strong>in the face of Russian grandstanding, says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/01\/30\/ukraine-zelensky-russia-biden\/\">Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Egypt gets plenty of mention in \u201c<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/71f715e9-d9ef-4641-8936-4ed5495e09be\">Does the EBRD still finance freedom?<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u201d <\/strong>in the Financial Times, which notes that we\u2019re one of the institution\u2019s most important markets. The EBRD does tons of good here, investing in people, small businesses and infrastructure, but the FT\u2019s Big Read for today suggests EBRD isn\u2019t doing enough to push us on democracy issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORNING MUST READ- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CEOs, CFOs and investor relations officers aren\u2019t wrong to feel that something is a bit off <\/strong><strong>in how ESG reporting is done today. <\/strong>At the center of the problem: So many would-be advisors are so hungry for a piece of a pie that could be worth bns of USD in fees globally that they\u2019re trying to wear multiple hats. They want to advise you on what you need to report on when it comes to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Come up with and abatement programs that make your business look more sustainable. Implement that program with you. Help you report to the constituencies who need to hear from you. And then audit and certify your progress on your \u201cESG journey\u201d (depending on which of the 6.02x10^23 competing and confusing reporting standards you choose to follow).<\/p>\n<p><strong>In finance terms? <\/strong>It\u2019s like your external auditor coming in and wanting to get a mandate that sees them re-factor your operations. Set up your finance and accounting systems. Build your financial statements. Help you move all the numbers move in the right direction. Choose whether to go with EAS or IFRS (or whatever). Communicate about numbers with those who matter. Oh, and be paid to audit and certify how well you\u2019re doing in the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other words: The folks who rate how we\u2019ll you\u2019re doing when it comes to ESG are also <\/strong><strong>trying to sell you on services that will help you improve that rating \u2014 and it\u2019s a conflict of interest<\/strong>. Fed Atlanta head Raphael Bostic is calling for three quarter-point rate increases in 2022 \u2014 but said a more aggressive approach was also on the table if necessary. The Fed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f444d6da-5980-4e52-8137-d4cf84f67e94\">last week indicated<\/a> that it will go ahead with its first rate hike in March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile in Europe: <\/strong>The Bank of England is set to announce further tightening for the second time in under two months in its meeting on Thursday, bringing its main rate up to 0.5% in a bid to curb inflation, which has reached a near-30-year high, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/bank-england-track-second-rate-rise-under-two-months-2022-01-24\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The European Central Bank, meanwhile, is continuing its asset purchases and will likely leave rates unchanged when it meets on the same day \u2014 marking a growing divergence among major economies in the transitory-vs-permanent debate raging over inflation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-29\/europe-s-big-two-to-deepen-split-on-inflation-response-eco-week?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Permanent inflation could mean lower returns on stocks and bonds in the foreseeable future<\/strong>, Nicolai Tangen, who runs Norway\u2019s sovereign wealth fund (the largest in the world), tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10fc6f3f-1f45-4cdd-a176-bb4a9d9afa0c\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLOSER TO HOME- The Central Bank of Egypt will also hold its first policy meeting of 2022 on <\/strong><strong>Thursday<\/strong>, where it is widely expected to hold rates steady, according to our <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a4f0876c-b382-42d3-897f-9972a2721bed\">regular interest rate poll<\/a>. All analysts we surveyed expect Egypt to maintain the current rates for a while longer, as they anticipate our rates continuing to attract portfolio inflows even amid Fed tightening and global inflationary pressures. \u201cWe have inflation readings looking tame so far, and the outlook for 2022 looks well within the CBE target,\u201d Al Ahly Pharos\u2019 Israa Ahmed told us. \u201cThe CBE succeeded to withstand similar pressures back in 2H2018 without rushing into rate hikes,\u201d she added, noting that \u201craising interest rates is not a costfree decision. It has large implications particularly on the budget and public debt trajectory, let alone the private investment and the financial markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>January PMI figures <\/strong>for Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markiteconomics.com\/Public\/Release\/ReleaseDates\">due out on Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US Embassy in Cairo is now <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/cultural-property-agreement-implementation-grant\/\">accepting applications<\/a><\/strong><strong> for Cultural Property Agreement <\/strong><strong>Implementation projects <\/strong>that would help Egypt protect its cultural property from looting, theft, and illicit trafficking. The <a href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/156\/CPAIG-2022-Announcment-RDL-edits.pdf\">guidelines<\/a> state that concept notes should be sent in by this Thursday, 3 February, while shortlisted applicants will need to submit full applications by 4 May. Each project will receive USD 50-100k, with around USD 500k earmarked for the entire program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OPEC+ <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-26\/opec-delegates-expect-to-stick-to-plan-for-modest-output-hike?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">will meet<\/a><\/strong><strong> this Wednesday, 2 February: The cartel is expected to agree to another <\/strong><strong>gradual oil production increase.<\/strong> Planned production increases by the cartel <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0c85b753-c915-4809-a035-491b881b9076\">have so far failed<\/a> to meet the recovery in demand as several member countries struggle to up their output. The tightening of the oil market has pushed prices to a seven-year high this month. <strong>Some analysts say Brent could breach the USD 100 \/ bbl mark this year<\/strong> unless supply is increased.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cairo International Book Fair<\/strong> continues today at the <strong>Egypt International Exhibition <\/strong><strong>Center<\/strong>. Making it easier for foreign funds to invest should translate into greater inflows into Egyptian debt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A long time coming:<\/strong> The government has been working to meet Euroclear\u2019s conditions since <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/10\/20\/egypt-signs-agreement-with-euroclear\/\">signing the initial agreement<\/a> back in 2019. The ministry was originally expecting <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/95e658a0-969e-43ad-84b1-5ad3188839e2\">a final agreement in 4Q2021<\/a>, which was then <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/77f1fef1-7022-4da7-a44e-d3ae01256eac\">pushed<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/77f1fef1-7022-4da7-a44e-d3ae01256eac\">into early 2022<\/a> as talks dragged on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The hitch?<\/strong> Possibly the withholding tax on government debt, according to Euroclear\u2019s head of global capital markets, Sudip Chatterjee, who <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a0e5466b-73a0-41bd-99f5-6d720b326c7e\">said last year<\/a> that the way Egypt calculates the tax needs to be brought in line with international norms. Egypt has fulfilled the remainder of the clearinghouse\u2019s requirements, Maait said, which included <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7c31d5b0-7df8-4820-8d29-6d2de7a51ea0\">setting up a central securities depository<\/a> in addition to a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/08d2d325-ed33-45ea-aed8-f22a00d47f86\">technical, logistical and administrative<\/a> terms.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Green bonds, round 2: <\/strong>The Finance Ministry is looking to take to the green bond market for a second time with another USD 750 mn issuance, Maait told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s no word on when the sale could go ahead:<\/strong> Maait said that consultations are still ongoing regarding the timing of the sale. Egypt debuted sovereign green bonds in the MENA region in 2020 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5d1b54d5-5efa-41c9-ac8b-728b105b2ef0\">USD 750 mn issuance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Issuance of Samurai bonds + sukuk are also in the offing:<\/strong> Maait said last week that Egypt is planning on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/51628974-be35-4f80-bb1a-b37a346a766d\">issuing USD 500 mn in JPY-denominated bonds<\/a> during the first six months of 2022. The EU says that exports to Egypt have fallen 40% since 2016, which it blames on the country\u2019s compulsory import registration requirements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rules: <\/strong>The government in 2016 began requiring some foreign companies to register with Egyptian authorities before exporting goods to Egypt. Registration is currently required for 29 categories of goods, including agricultural and food products, cosmetics, toys, textiles, garments, household appliances, furniture, and ceramic tiles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rationale:<\/strong> Government officials said the move was designed to improve quality control of imported goods, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharkawylaw.com\/new-regulations-for-importation-are-they-good-for-egypt\/\">some observes<\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/riad-riad.com\/new-requirements-factories-and-companies-exporting-egypt\/\">suggested at the time<\/a> that it was intended to slow demand for foreign exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem:<\/strong> The EU alleges that the registration process is arbitrary and can take years, and that authorities \u201chave failed to process the applications of many EU companies,\u201d despite appeals by the EU and the companies themselves. \u201cThese import restrictions are illegal under WTO rules and we regret that Egypt has not acted to remove these, despite our repeated requests and efforts to resolve this issue,\u201d EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our response:<\/strong> \u201cThe Egyptian government is keen to strengthen its economic and trade relations with the EU,\u201d a Trade Ministry source said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mift.media\/posts\/305054184999196\">an official statement<\/a>. Egypt remains committed to international trade rules, they added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digitization to the rescue?<\/strong> The authorities are working on combining the import registration system with the new digital customs system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nafeza.gov.eg\/en#\">Nafeza<\/a>, which would house all importers on a single platform and possibly resolve the issue with the EU, Khaled Nassef, technology advisor for Egyptian Company for E-commerce Technology (MTS), which set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e9e2f68a-8c99-4750-b736-cbcdd6f65839\">ACI system<\/a>, told us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WTO action has been six years in the making:<\/strong> The threat of a formal complaint at the WTO has existed ever since the rules were introduced. The trade body wrote to the government in 2016 asking for an explanation for why it had introduced rules that were <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2016\/06\/19\/egypts-trading-partners-turn-to-the-wto-to-complain-against-egypts-import-restrictions\/\">negatively impacting<\/a> its trading partners, and the EU <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2016\/06\/28\/eu-delegation-head-urges-egypt-to-remove-import-restrictions-abide-by-wto-rules\/\">urged the Trade Ministry to scrap them<\/a> from the outset.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coming next:<\/strong> Egypt and the EU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/thewto_e\/whatis_e\/tif_e\/disp1_e.htm\">have 60 days<\/a> in which to resolve the issue via consultations. The amendments aim to streamline registry procedures by significantly reducing the number of required documents, digitizing parts of the procedure, and putting a time ceiling on the entire process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Though not without some contention:<\/strong> Some MPs expressed concern that unlike the old law, the newly amended bill does not specify that registration forms are filed with tax offices at no cost. They asked for any fee to be set out in the law and not left to be set in the executive regulations without legislators\u2019 oversight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A refresher:<\/strong> As things stand, registering real estate requires on-the-ground inspections by notaries, documentation of provenance, and other steps that usually take months and have in the past discouraged property owners from notarizing their deeds. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly decided to streamline the process in order to encourage more notarizations, and the cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2d716978-cdd4-46cf-8825-cd46e70c6359\">approved the amendments<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next for the bill:<\/strong> The bill will be up for further discussion at a House plenary session (the next is scheduled for Sunday, 6 February). The ministry also reported 38 new deaths, bringing the country\u2019s total death toll to 22,604.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expect case numbers to keep setting fresh highs for a few weeks:<\/strong> The current Omicron wave is expected to peak in mid-February before cooling off in early March, manager of Vascera allergy center Amgad El Haddad said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The vaccine tally:<\/strong> 25,928,356 people are now fully vaccinated against the virus, while some 11.3 mn people have received only their first shots and 618,761 people have received booster shots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism workers could be next in line for boosters: <\/strong>Acting Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed that booster shots be administered to workers in the tourism sector in the near future, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/egypt.mohp\/posts\/259517943026094\">ministry statement<\/a>. The government has been <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2923295f-b186-4306-b9ed-57ff4a82fe8f\">rolling out vaccines<\/a> for tourism workers since April last year, with <a href=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/News\/413501.aspx\">all workers<\/a> in the Red Sea fully vaccinated by May.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Fresh batch of AstraZeneca jabs:<\/strong> We received 115k AstraZeneca doses from Latvia on Saturday, according to a Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/egypt.mohp\/posts\/259766946334527\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a new variant on the block (kind of):<\/strong> The BA.2 variant is a subvariant or \u201cclose cousin\u201d of Omicron \u2014 with a difference: it\u2019s 1.5x more contagious, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/scientists-alert-over-rising-cases-caused-by-omicron-cousin-ba2-2022-01-30\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports citing Danish health officials. The variant may account for around 82% of new covid cases in Denmark, 9% in the UK, and 8% in the US.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026and it has landed close to home: <\/strong>Algeria has recorded several BA.2 cases, the director of an Algerian biomedical research institute said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.radioalgerie.dz\/ar\/node\/4164\">radio interview<\/a>, making the country the first in the Arab world to report cases of the new variant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But don\u2019t panic just yet:<\/strong> We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/25\/the-next-covid-variant-will-be-more-contagious-than-omicron-who-says.html\">knew the next variant<\/a> would have to be more transmissible than omicron to overtake it as the dominant strain. Today, in part one of this two-part series, we look at the education management companies active in Egypt, and how they\u2019re growing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What exactly is an education management company? Put simply, it\u2019s an organization that manages schools, operationally and academically<\/strong> \u2014 often under <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Education_management_organization\">a for-profit model<\/a>. These companies might own and operate schools in their portfolio, or they could be school operators managing schools owned by other investors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are different kinds of education management <\/strong><strong>compan<\/strong><strong>ies operating in Egypt<\/strong>, notes Tammam Abushakra, advisor to the chairman of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esoleducation.com\/about-us\/chairmans-message\">Esol Education<\/a>, which owns and operates AIS, AIS West, and CES in Egypt, as well as seven schools in other countries. \u201cThere are entities like ours that began with an educator establishing one school which grew gradually and organically over time to become a multinational group of schools,\u201d Abushakra tells Enterprise. Other companies begin as investment vehicles, with capital deployed to finance the acquisition of preexisting schools, or \u2014 less commonly \u2014 the establishment of new schools. These tend to be larger and grow more quickly, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education management companies could be homegrown or foreign: <\/strong>\u201cSome prominent education management companies have emerged within Egypt and some foreign companies are now active in Egypt,\u201d says Abushakra.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Different companies could have different investment focuses: <\/strong>\u201cSome education management companies with access to capital choose to invest in real estate, and others prefer to invest only in school operating companies that lease their campuses from real estate owners. There are also companies, or funds, that invest in school campuses but not in school operations,\u201d Abushakra adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The number of education management companies in Egypt, and the variation in their nature and structure, has grown considerably in recent years <\/strong>\u2014 though it\u2019s difficult to know precisely how many are active here, Abushakra says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We do know of at least five others: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/egypt.sabis.net\/\">Egypt\u2019s two branches<\/a> of the International School of Choueifat are operated by education management company SABIS. CIRA subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eduhive.com\/\">Eduhive<\/a> manages BCCIS, Regent British School, Saxony International School (SIS), and Swiss Ecole Lemania. The Dr. Nermien Ismail Language Schools (NIS) are <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/12\/eaef-makes-its-first-investment-in-egypts-education-sector-with-significant-minority-stake-acquisition\/\">operated by<\/a> education management company <a href=\"http:\/\/nis-egypt.com\/aep\/\">Advanced Education for the Establishment, Management, and Ownership of Educational Facilities<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BalancEDorg\/\">BalancED Education Company<\/a> owns the New Generation International School in Obour and Asten College in Taj City. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3b062b7f-ecf4-4a6f-b663-000622bd7564\">Egypt Education Platform (EEP)<\/a> manages the assets of the Egypt Education Fund, a 50\/50 JV <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/05\/21\/efg-gems-partner-up-on-new-k-12-education-platform-in-egypt\/\">established in 2018<\/a> between EFG Hermes and GEMS Education to invest in Egypt\u2019s K12 education sector. EEP currently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3b062b7f-ecf4-4a6f-b663-000622bd7564\">has eight schools<\/a> on its portfolio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To clarify: EEP is the rebranded GEMS Education Egypt<\/strong>, the Egyptian management company that was set up to manage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemseducation.com\/choosing-a-school\/find-a-school\/?Countries=Egypt&City=Cairo&AgeFrom=0&AgeTo=18&Curriculum=&OrderBy=Relevance&Certificate=&LanguageOfInstruction=&doSearch=True&schoolfinder=False\">the four GEMS schools<\/a> initially established in Egypt under the EFG-GEMS JV, notes EEP Director of Communications Amr Sherif. EEP has different streams, one of which is the GEMS Education Egypt stream, notes Sherif.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has roughly six new education management companies in the pipeline<\/strong>, estimates Eduhive CEO Karim Mostafa, without giving further details about the names or owners of these companies. Overall, the education management landscape in Egypt is still fairly new, but demand for these services is high, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The precise nature of education management partnership models can vary considerably, <\/strong>sources note. \u201cIt all depends on the structure of the agreement and the nature of the partnership,\u201d says BalancED Education Managing Director Salma El Bakry. \u201cWe might have total ownership or might operate the school, without owning the asset.\u201d Other options include JVs, property rentals or revenue-sharing agreements, she adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most common model is probably one where an investor has land or a building, wants to set up a school, but doesn\u2019t have the know-how,<\/strong> EEP CEO Ahmed Wahby tells Enterprise. \u201cWe then present what we believe is the right model to address this demand, creating a [mutually beneficial setup] for us and the investor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some investors choose to fully outsource all logistical issues: <\/strong>Eduhive frequently works with investors that want fully-fledged school management solutions, says Mostafa. Then, the company has two roles: Pre-operation and operational.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This can mean tailoring a proposed business model, according to investor need:<\/strong> Eduhive\u2019s pre-operation activities include extensive research, examining land allocation, curricula, and price points to create a business model that makes financial sense \u2014 which can then be taken to the investor, says Mostafa. Then, Eduhive oversees the design, construction, and licensing processes, to get the school up and running. \u201cWe work with consultants on design, hire and supervise building contractors, buy furniture, do all the marketing, teacher hiring and training,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But with management systems already in place, companies can also streamline services: <\/strong>EEP has multiple departments, including finance, accounting, procurement, HR, operations, and education. So any new schools joining the platform follow company policies, governance process and education provision, Wahby tells Enterprise. \u201cIt\u2019s simple: We look for prospects relevant to our growth strategy, and our role is then to partner with those assets \u2014 whether by acquiring them, building new ones, or setting up management contracts. When they become part of our platform, we start offering them our management services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dedicated superintendents might oversee the academics: <\/strong>Every principal at an Eduhive-managed school is responsible for curriculum delivery, and the company has a superintendent who works with the principals and schools to make sure all KPIs are met, says Mostafa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are these companies financed? It depends on the nature of their partnerships<\/strong>, sources note. Eduhive takes a fee \u2014 a fixed-rate percentage \u2014 based on the revenues and net income of the schools it manages, says Mostafa. \u201cSo it\u2019s obviously in our best interest for investors to make a return,\u201d he adds. For EEP, the mechanisms in place for revenue generation vary depending on its relationships with individual schools, says Wahby. \u201cIf we\u2019re getting into a management contract, then we take a percentage. If we own the school \u2014 which in some cases, we do \u2014 then revenue generation is closely linked to the school\u2019s profitability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next week: <\/strong>We look at
