A dozen more of you will be getting Enterprise mugs in which to consume your morning coffee.<\/p><p><strong>SPEAKING OF this wave of the pandemic: The number of new daily cases hit its highest<\/strong> <strong>level yesterday since June 2020<\/strong>, meaning the official count of daily cases has doubled so far this month. The silver lining: The death toll has <em>not <\/em>doubled in tandem.<\/p><p><strong>ALSO this morning: <\/strong><strong>Unvaccinated travelers to Egypt can now enter using a negative<\/strong> <strong>PCR, rapid antigen <\/strong>or rapid molecular ID Now test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival, the Health Ministry announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/egypt.mohp\/posts\/252822983695590\">statement<\/a> on Thursday. The previous requirement allowed only a PCR test. We have more in today\u2019s news well, below.<\/p><p><strong>HAPPENING THIS WEEK-<\/strong><\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>Nahr Elkhair Development and Investment\u2019s shares will start trading on the <\/strong><strong>EGX on Tuesday<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2022\/01\/22\/1501547\">Al Borsa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=22012022&amp;id=65cd81cb-4ab8-4a37-8790-46e01a5a2ddd\">Al Shorouk<\/a> reported last night.<\/p><p><strong>Looks like there won\u2019t be an IPO after all:<\/strong> Sources told Al Shorouk that the company will not be required to offer shares to investors via subscription and will instead directly list its shares on the bourse on Tuesday. The company has set a reference price of EGP 0.25 per share for what now appears set to be a technical listing.<\/p><p><strong>PSA #1- We can probably all look forward to a four-day workweek this week<\/strong> as the nation takes Thursday off in observance of 25 January. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=322297706607323&amp;set=a.144073987763030&amp;type=3\">confirmed yesterday<\/a> that public sector workers will take the day, though we\u2019re yet to hear from the EGX, the Central Bank of Egypt or the Manpower Ministry.<\/p><p><strong>PSA #2- Expect up to 5mm of rain and high winds on Wednesday with a high of 13\u00b0C<\/strong>, setting up a chilly (but crisp) Thursday.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- UK accuses Russia of coup-plotting in Kiev: <\/strong>The UK has the front pages of the Western media to itself this morning after the Foreign Office took the extraordinary step of accusing Russia of plotting a coup in Ukraine, going so far as to name Moscow\u2019s alleged replacement for pro-Western president, Volodymyr Zelensky. The UK presented no evidence for its claims but appears to have had the backing of the US. EU leaders are yet to respond to the allegations. In the West, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/kremlin-plan-to-install-pro-russian-leadership-in-ukraine-exposed\">Foreign Office\u2019s statement<\/a> is front-page news everywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-22\/u-k-says-russia-plotting-to-install-pro-kremlin-leader-in-kyiv?srnd=premium&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ukraine-crisis-britain-russia\/uk-accuses-kremlin-of-trying-to-install-pro-russian-leader-in-ukraine-idUSKBN2JW0JU\">Reuters<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/22\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-coup-britain.html\">New York Times<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-60095459\">BBC<\/a>. Russian state news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1391937\">Tass<\/a> carries the response from the Kremlin, which accused the UK of spreading misinformation.<\/p><p><strong>The UK\u2019s allegations came following another weekend of <\/strong><strong>saber-rattling and \u201c<\/strong><strong>diplomacy\u201d between the US and Russia<\/strong> over Ukraine. The Russians announced <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-europe-ukraine-moscow-af55d379aed7afc6e7794d782ff871ca\">new global naval drills<\/a>, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/u-s-nato-ukraine-weapons-defense-russia\/\">US<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/russia-invasion-fears-as-britain-sends-2-000-anti-tank-weapons-to-ukraine-12520950\">UK<\/a> began funneling arms into Ukraine, all while talks between US and Russian officials made little headway: Russia doesn\u2019t want Nato forces in Ukraine and the US doesn\u2019t want to talk about it.<\/p><p><strong>Division in the ranks:<\/strong> France and Germany both signaled over the weekend that they\u2019d prefer not to get sucked into an armed confrontation with another nuclear armed power and made moves to reduce tensions. Berlin refused to go along with Washington\u2019s plan to export arms to Ukraine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/germany-blocks-nato-ally-from-transferring-weapons-to-ukraine-11642790772\">blocked Estonia<\/a> from doing so. Meanwhile, French president Emmanuel Macron called on European countries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jan\/19\/macron-says-eu-must-start-own-dialogue-with-russia-over-ukraine\">enter separate talks<\/a> with Moscow without the US (much to the chagrin of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/00308154-fd68-4ffe-8abf-4ea8493082cd#comments-anchor\">US officials<\/a>).<\/p><p><strong>And that seems to be what is happening:<\/strong> Officials from Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany will meet in Paris (without the US) later this week in a bid to dial back the tensions and end the frozen conflict between the Ukrainian government and Russian separatists in the east of the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/political-advisers-hold-four-way-talks-ukraine-paris-2022-01-22\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>Global markets had their worst week in over a year <\/strong>as a drop in tech stocks spilled over into other sectors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/03555a13-e806-444a-b7b1-3b1dd9f257c1?sharetype=blocked\">the FT<\/a> reports. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was the biggest loser, falling 7.6% last week \u2014 its biggest drop since the pandemic\u2019s onset in March 2020 \u2014 as investors fled the high-risk growth stocks. Losses were accentuated by a 22% drop in Netflix shares on Friday as the company warned of slowing subscriber growth in its <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.netflix.net\/financials\/quarterly-earnings\/default.aspx\">latest earnings release<\/a>. T<strong>he Nasdaq is down nearly 12% since the beginning of the year and is on course to record its worst month since the 2008 financial crisis<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-21\/unrelenting-plunges-in-the-nasdaq-ring-a-dot-com-bust-alarm-bell?srnd=premium-middle-east&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Meanwhile, both the Dow Jones and the S&amp;P 500 posted a third straight week of losses, with the S&amp;P 500 down 5.7% for the week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/20\/stock-market-futures-open-to-close-news.html\">CNBC<\/a> reports.<\/p><p><strong>Warren Buffett gains on Cathie Wood amid the upset in equities:<\/strong> The apparent growth-to-value rotation in the stock markets has led Warren Buffett\u2019s Berkshire Hathaway fund to nearly overtake Cathie Wood\u2019s tech-focused Ark fund in the post-pandemic performance table, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/42bb6639-79a0-48da-9f21-01f33e7370f9\">Financial Times<\/a> reports.<\/p><p><strong>Expect more movement in tech stocks amid big earnings reports this week: <\/strong>Microsoft is up on Tuesday, followed by Tesla on Wednesday and Apple on Thursday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-microsoft-and-tesla-headline-key-earnings-week-amid-nasdaqs-slide-11642847401\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports.<\/p><p><strong>BTC dropped to a six -month low as risk-off sentiment grew, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-21\/crypto-meltdown-erases-more-than-1-trillion-in-market-value?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported. The digital asset dropped 12% to below USD 36k on Friday, its lowest level since July, bringing the aggregate crypto market\u2019s loss since the asset class began to fall in November to USD 1 trn. This marks the second-largest ever decline in dollar terms for both BTC and the wider market, according to Bespoke Investment Group analysts.<\/p><p> <strong>Russia could deal another blow to the crypto market: <\/strong>The world\u2019s third-largest BTC miner has proposed a blanket ban on crypto trading and mining<strong>. <\/strong>Russia\u2019s central bank said digital currencies pose a threat to citizens\u2019 wellbeing and financial stability and likened the assets to a pyramid scheme in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/CBR-Cryptocurrencies-Report.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> published on Thursday.<\/p><p><strong>Though the Fed could be more open to digital currencies: <\/strong>The US Federal Reserve issued a digital banking <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/Fed-Money-and-Payments-Cryptocurrencies-Report.pdf\">discussion paper (pdf)<\/a> of its own on Thursday, kicking off a debate on the pros and cons of introducing a federal digital currency and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/other20220120a.htm\">inviting the public<\/a> to submit comments over the next 120 days.<\/p><div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 subscribe-box-panel\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"title\">\n<h4 class=\"fw-lighter mb-10\">\n          Get <b style=\"font-weight: 700\">Enterprise<\/b> daily<br>\n        <\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-10\">The roundup of news and trends that move your markets and shape corporate agendas delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"egypt\/en\/user\/NewsLetters\" type=\"button \" class=\"btn-green px-3 d-flex align-items-center\">Subscribe here<\/a>\n    <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><p><strong>NOT ENOUGH DOOM AND GLOOM FOR YOU? <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The global economy will face an \u201cobstacle course\u201d in 2022 <\/strong>as the pandemic and geopolitical tensions drive inflation amid record debt levels, IMF head Kristalina Georgieva said on the fifth and final day of the online Davos conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/797069ab-b5e4-4124-9c28-780338ddb1ef\">the Financial Times<\/a>reports.<\/p><p><strong>Covid has written us one hell of a check:<\/strong> The pandemic will likely have cost the global economy around USD 12.5 tn by 2024, Georgieva <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/imf-sees-cost-covid-pandemic-rising-beyond-125-trillion-estimate-2022-01-20\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Georgieva called on countries with high USD-dominated debt to act quickly: <\/strong>The IMF managing director said that anticipated Fed rate hikes \u201ccould throw cold water on what for some countries is already a weak recovery,\u201d adding that \u201cIf you have currency mismatches, now is the moment to address them.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Startups can apply until 30 January for the spring 2022 cycle of EGBank\u2019s Mint <\/strong><strong>Incubator.<\/strong> The incubator offers two tracks: a sector-agnostic track for startups at the MVP stage, and a fintech track that accepts early-stage startups both at the ideation and MVP stages. Despite the emergence of the delta and omicron variants, supply chain disruptions, and surging commodity prices, a whopping <strong>three-quarters of all respondents said that 2021 was good for business<\/strong>. This is significantly higher than the 42% who expressed optimism in 2020, when <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/2020\/06\/04\/enterprise-covid-19-reader-poll-results\/\">we last posed the question<\/a>, reflecting the post covid recovery we saw on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/db3e7873-e17d-4691-b57e-b53c6a4734e7\">the macro front<\/a> last year. Seriously, what a difference two years make.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image'><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/Enterprise-Survey-1600px-English-Arabic-2022-v2-02.png?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>You are even more optimistic about 2022,<\/strong> with 77% of respondents saying that business conditions will improve this year. Even when looking at those who are not breaking out the bubbly, we see more people unsure of how the year will go (14%) than those who see the year turning sour (9%).<\/p>\n<p class='web-image'><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/Enterprise-Survey-1600px-English-Arabic-2022-v2-08.png?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>The majority aren\u2019t afraid of the competition:<\/strong> Sixty-nine percent of readers tell us they see their companies doing better than their competition in the next six months. This is up from a little under half (47%) in 1Q2020. Those who think they\u2019ll be doing worse than the competition dropped from our last poll to only 4%, down from 13%.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image'><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/Enterprise-Survey-1600px-English-Arabic-2022-v2-14.png?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most of your companies are even planning on some CAPEX spending in 2022:<\/strong> 63% of you believe it is likely that your business will increase investment in Egypt in the next six months, up from only 25% when the pandemic first started.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image'><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/Enterprise-Survey-1600px-English-Arabic-2022-v2-03.png?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>Covid who? <\/strong>Having gone through the pains of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, we appear to have gained some resilience and are less afraid of covid. Eighteen percent of respondents don\u2019t see the pandemic and its new variants as a significant issue to their business, up from 10% back in 2020. A full 10% see covid as an opportunity \u2014 up from only 4%. The majority (58%) feel that the pandemic remains a challenge, but that their businesses can overcome it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nothing to fear but fear itself: <\/strong>Only 9% of you feel that covid and new variants such as omicron present a clear threat to your business\u2019 future, down from 17% back in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image'><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/Enterprise-Survey-1600px-English-Arabic-2022-v2-04.png?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026And that\u2019s (in part) because you\u2019ve been proactive about jabs: <\/strong>57% of respondents say that their company plans to institute or has already instituted a mandatory vaccination policy, in line with government efforts to get <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b1e20ef8-8a23-4d3e-a0cd-04b513c44b62\">everyone vaccinated<\/a>. This is in stark contrast to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/136f935e-e74f-45b8-9977-14c209ece1f4\">last year<\/a>, where a majority of companies we spoke with said they were simply encouraging employees to get the vaccine. That said, a full 30% of respondents say their companies have not or will not make it mandatory to get jabbed.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image'><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/Enterprise-Survey-1600px-English-Arabic-2022-v2-05.png?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>This attitude is showing results, with 92% of respondents saying that at least some of their staff are either partially or fully vaccinated<\/strong>, and a quarter of respondents telling us that all of their staff members are either partially or fully vaccinated. Only 14% of respondents are working full-time from home. Meanwhile, 42% are allowed to work between one and four days every week from home, with the majority of those permitting only two days from home. The two companies will drill a total of 12 new wells under the agreements, the statement says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The agreements include a 3.5-year extension to Pharos Energy\u2019s exploration license in the El Fayum concession<\/strong> in the Western Desert, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharos.energy\/investors\/press-releases\/signature-of-the-third-amendment-to-the-el-fayum-concession-agreement\/\">company statement<\/a>. bonds to finance <\/strong><strong>the Decent Life initiative<\/strong>, International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MOICEgypt\/posts\/295770349251537\">said<\/a> last week during talks with UN officials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable development bonds?<\/strong> Think green bonds, but instead of financing energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives, the money can be channeled into a wider range of projects considered socially beneficial (like education, health, housing or transportation).<\/p>\n<p><strong>But #1:<\/strong> It remains unclear precisely how regulators are defining their terms and we are yet to see the criteria laying out exactly how projects will be classified as socially beneficial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But #2:<\/strong> We\u2019re also a little unclear about whether the Financial Regulatory Authority would need to put together a new legal framework for the new securities or whether the government could issue sustainable development bonds under the existing green bond guidelines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Think of this as the ministry planting a sign post. <\/strong>It will need in future to explain which authority could issue the bonds, when they could issue them, the size of the issuance, and the specifics on what the proceeds would finance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This would be the first time the Egyptian government has issued a sustainable development bond<\/strong>, though it was responsible for selling the MENA region\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5d1b54d5-5efa-41c9-ac8b-728b105b2ef0\">first-ever sovereign green bond<\/a> back in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable development bonds on the EGX:<\/strong> The FRA is putting in place a framework that will allow companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4936aed7-6841-46cc-b4bd-fabf94700cff\">list sustainable development bonds on the EGX<\/a> together with incentives to draw capital from hedge funds and private equity firms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Decent Life initiative:<\/strong> The four-year, multi-bn USD infrastructure project is attempting to upgrade infrastructure and basic services for rural communities across the country. href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a053ad47-40fd-4aba-b6ef-38340681965f\">merger<\/a> \u2014 which would value the company at around USD 220 mn \u2014 with blank-check firm Vistas Media Acquisition Company was approved by Vistas shareholders at a special stockholders meeting last week, the companies announced in a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wamda.com\/2022\/01\/vistas-shareholders-approve-anghami-merger\">statement<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Anghami and Swvl are in something of a race to close their SPACs:<\/strong> Queen\u2019s Gambit is looking to close with Swvl this month, the domestic press quoted <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bcfb262f-b3a9-4a65-85f7-ae377d713cfd\">Swvl CEO Mostafa Kandil<\/a> as saying last month. Anghami is looking to close by 11 February. You can check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1810491\/000121390022000272\/ea153372-425_anghami.htm\">its latest investor presentation here<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>But they haven\u2019t picked a great time for it:<\/strong> SPACs, IPO stocks and tech are in the middle of a heavy sell-off triggered by the Federal Reserve\u2019s announcement that it will hike interest rates several times this year. Seven SPACs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1c3eb215-b029-4c65-b660-6022113e3d54\">have written to the US Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a> to cancel IPO plans this month as poor performance coupled with increasing regulatory scrutiny hurts the asset class.<\/p><p><strong>Closer to home though, SPACs are only getting started:<\/strong> We could see our first homegrown SPAC established within the next month, Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) chief Mohamed Omran <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a15c05fc-a3a2-41f6-90c8-e99e58fafca5\">said last week.<\/a><\/p><p><strong>Also worth noting this morning: <\/strong><strong>UAE-based renewable energy firm <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/\">Masdar<\/a><\/strong><strong> plans to more than double its <\/strong><strong>operations this decade<\/strong>, driven in part by the acquisition of power firms in the US and Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-20\/uae-s-biggest-renewable-energy-firm-looks-to-deals-for-growth?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports CFO Niall Hannigan saying.
