The <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/EGX-Thursday-off.jpg\">EGX<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/CBE-January-7-holiday.pdf\">central bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f6a29720-0746-4125-82e4-b9b5f0eb186c\">cabinet<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/309697324534028\">manpower ministry<\/a> have all issued statements confirming it\u2019s a national holiday. Your next regularly scheduled holiday will be Thursday, 27 January. We then start a long holiday drought stretching into late-April, at which time we\u2019ll be deep into Ramadan.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>PSA #2- Heading to Dubai from Egypt? You\u2019ll need a QR-coded PCR test <\/strong><strong>before<\/strong> <strong>departure \u2014 <\/strong><strong>and have to take another one on arrival. <\/strong>All travellers to Dubai must show a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours previously \u2014 but PCR certificates for passengers traveling from Egypt (as well as India and Vietnam) must also include a QR code, under new guidance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emirates.com\/uk\/english\/help\/covid-19\/dubai-travel-requirements\/tourists\/\">the Emirates airlines website<\/a>. Egypt also made the list of dozens of countries from which arrivals to Dubai must also take another covid-19 PCR test upon landing in the emirate \u2014 and remain in their hotels or homes until they receive a negative result.<\/p><p><strong>There\u2019s no word yet on the outcome of the final votes that were scheduled for yesterday <\/strong><strong>in the House of Representatives<\/strong> on the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3d9ae909-072f-4fc9-afe1-410336e76388\">fintech act<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5e74b5b9-6e89-4fcb-b133-c2c9bd9dede1\">unified budget act<\/a>. The House did give its preliminary approval to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/3238374.aspx\">Unified Planning Act<\/a> in a plenary session, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/3238374.aspx\">Ahram Gate<\/a>. The legislation would, if passed, dictate how governorate-level economic, social, and urban development plans are implemented.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- The Big Quit is showing no signs of slowing in the US<\/strong> after a record 4.5 mn workers quit their jobs in November, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/jolts.nr0.htm\">official figures<\/a> released yesterday. The so-called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c82ac664-db4b-4717-b16d-0d019f559691\">great resignation<\/a>\u2019 was a hot topic throughout 2021 in the United States as the number of people quitting their jobs kept notching new records, indicating a tightening labor market and stronger wage growth. The figures are everywhere in the business press this morning from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-04\/u-s-job-openings-fall-in-november-quits-rise-to-record?srnd=premium&amp;sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ea46d731-9141-472a-84e9-4620dcbf8070\">the Financial Times<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/record-45-million-americans-quit-jobs-november-2022-01-04\/\">Reuters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/job-openings-us-growth-01-04-2022-11641256945?mod=hp_lead_pos3\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a><strong> Warren Buffett\u2019s rethink on Apple could prove to be his best play ever:<\/strong> The ex-tech skeptic has made more than USD 120 bn on paper thanks to his pivot into Apple stock, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/04\/warren-buffett-makes-over-120-billion-on-apples-trot-to-3-trillion-among-his-best-bets-ever.html\">CNBC<\/a>. An easing of inflationary pressures, increase in export revenues, and uptick in tourism supported new business, though subdued demand and lower output continued to weigh on firms, pushing the gauge up to 49.0 in December from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f6572964-fd33-4870-9d6d-f1bb1d364abb\">48.7 the previous month<\/a> \u2014 an improvement, but still below the 50.0 mark that separates expansion from contraction. This is the thirteenth consecutive month private sector activity has contracted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Input cost inflation saw its fastest slowdown in over three years<\/strong>, due to a softening of increases in purchasing costs and wages, according to the report. \u201cThe latest Egypt PMI gave increased confidence that inflationary pressures peaked earlier in the fourth quarter and are now beginning to soften,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bae3738e-2a55-4d28-87ee-7289e160fc9e\">David Owen<\/a>, IHS Markit economist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weak demand and overall price hikes are still problematic:<\/strong> Price pressures were still strong overall, leading firms to mark up their selling prices. These higher rates were partly to blame for subdued customer demand. Business output and new orders fell for the fifth month running.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism and exports had a good month: <\/strong>New business was supported by an improvement in tourism activity and the sharpest rise in export orders since February, according to the report. Egypt\u2019s export revenues recorded a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9f12d3c8-c550-4b95-89d6-74b63b3c63fa\">record<\/a>USD 31 bn in 2021, according to Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fewer jobs \u2014 though the hiring market shrank more slowly: <\/strong>Lower sales and a relatively mild rise in backlogs impacted hiring. However, the rate of job reduction was softer than the previous month and mostly driven by companies deciding not to replace employees who quit their jobs voluntarily, the report notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global supply chain issues still have a local impact.<\/strong> Delivery times lengthened for the second month in a row, with suppliers unable to mitigate global bottlenecks. The supply delays meant that inventories were depleted for the fifth consecutive month, despite an increase in purchasing activity as some businesses attempted to replenish their stock. However, supply chains overall deteriorated only slightly in December, and less so than in November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Omicron means businesses are still \u201cdownbeat\u201d on outlook<\/strong>, with business confidence recording only a fractional rise from November's one-year low, says the report. Only around 23% of companies gave a positive outlook, as hopes for recovery were dampened by concerns over omicron and price hikes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ELSEWHERE IN THE REGION-<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s non-oil private sector activity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markiteconomics.com\/Public\/Home\/PressRelease\/37c7c78330654781b1b976763e07d8f9\">fell to a nine-month low<\/a> in December as omicron worries dented Saudi business confidence and new orders. The leasing arm of GB Auto sold the securities in two separate issuances with tranches rated A through AA+. Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank was the sole subscriber to both issuances, which were backed by leasing receivables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the company\u2019s first issuance in a year:<\/strong> The last time GB Lease went to the securitization market was last January when it <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/510fb761-11b7-4c5a-8cdb-6b1b17a33727\">sold EGP 2 bn<\/a> of asset-backed securities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advisors:<\/strong> CIB, Banque du Caire and the Suez Canal Bank acted as joint arrangers, underwriters, and financial advisors on a EGP 1.65 bn sale, while CIB, AAIB, Banque du Caire, and Al Ahly Bank of Kuwait worked on the second, EGP 2.65 bn issuance. Law firm Dreny and Partners provided counsel, while Sherif Dabbous was the auditor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Premium Card closed an EGP 170 mn short-term <\/strong><strong>securitized bond sale<\/strong>, financial advisor EFG Hermes <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/EFG-Hermes-x-Premium-Securitization-Sixth-Close-English.docx.pdf\">announced<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/1\/EFG-Hermes-x-Premium-Securitization-Sixth-Close-English.docx.pdf\">(pdf)<\/a> yesterday. The issuance consists of a single ten-month tranche, and is part of a two-year, EGP 2 bn securitization program Premium Card launched last year. The bonds received a Prime 1 rating from rating service MERIS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advisors: <\/strong>EFG Hermes was the sole financial advisor, sole transaction manager, book-runner, underwriter and arranger for the offering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2022 SO FAR-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The two <\/strong><strong>sales bring the total value of securitized bonds sold since the start of the new year to almost EGP <\/strong><strong>6.9 bn<\/strong>, by our count. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4cd75c45-5faa-47fc-b9de-124f963012cf\">CI Capital\u2019s leasing arm Corplease<\/a> kicked off the year with a four-tranche, EGP 2.4 bn issuance earlier this week. <strong>A total of 19 securitized bond issuances with a combined value of EGP 15.8 bn<\/strong> went to market last year, according to our figures. Three of those issuances, together worth nearly EGP 1.75 bn, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/21504d18-3879-4c04-8bae-6aa46fd4c18c\">took place last week<\/a> as the market The CGT came into effect on 1 January. Maher also leads Prime Securities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The industry lobby seems to want changes to the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ec6afc7f-e068-4bb3-86c2-bf392f54ae26\">package of EGX tax cuts and fee reductions<\/a><\/strong><strong> recently proposed by the government<\/strong>, which members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/309751184528642\">cabinet discussed yesterday<\/a> with representatives of the securities industry, and a group of MPs. The government announced a range of measures in November designed to soften the impact of the new 10% capital gains tax on EGX transactions. The basket of measures includes reduced trading and clearance fees and lower taxes on share swaps and earnings from equity funds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately, we don\u2019t know much else:<\/strong> Maher didn\u2019t say what ECMA is trying to negotiate with the government or provide an update on the talks, saying only that the lobby group will finalize its proposed amendments in a few days and hopes to present them to cabinet in the next two or three weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reminder:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc92b9f8-5427-446f-a7dc-2960cc4d17a4\">capital gains tax<\/a> replaced stamp duty on EGX transactions at the beginning of the year. Resident investors will now pay the 10% tax on net portfolio earnings at the end of the tax year. International investors are not subject ot the tax.<\/p>\n<p><strong>El Nasr might have a Chinese partner to produce EVs by March:<\/strong> The government is in talks with two Chinese companies to partner with El Nasr Automotive to produce electric cars in Egypt, Public Enterprises Minister Hisham Tawfik told Yahduth Fi Masr\u2019s Sherif Amer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mVlpX6pkvv0\">watch, runtime: 3:50<\/a>). The government hopes to finalize terms later this month and sign final contracts by March, he said. The talks come after negotiations with Chinese auto firm Dongfeng <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6f0f9e19-5e30-400f-8dba-6213afd8fb58\">collapsed in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does this imply the short list has gotten shorter?<\/strong> El Nasr CEO Hani El Khouly <a The big question, however, is whether ongoing supply disruptions and inflationary pressures will get in the way of our energy goals. Today, we breakdown why our energy hub ambitions could be closer to our reach this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Damietta LNG plant got the ball rolling on our energy hub ambitions: <\/strong>Plans to become an energy hub and boost natgas exports to Europe got a kickstart when the Damietta LNG plant <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3613f080-5d75-4b85-af31-1b66fcda3204\">came back online<\/a> in February after an eight-year hiatus. Thanks in part to resumption of the Damietta plant\u2019s operations, Egypt\u2019s LNG terminals were <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b05357d8-d636-4372-a069-cf77d948b1e7\">running at full capacity by December<\/a>, exporting the equivalent of around 1.6 bn cubic feet per day (bcf\/d) as we tried to capitalize on the surge in natural gas prices overseas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Oil Ministry wants to increase the amount of gas it pipes in from Israel for export exports to 600-650 mn cf\/d in 1Q2022<\/strong>, up from 450 mn cf\/d currently. Under the existing USD 19.5 bn agreement with Israel, Egypt currently imports 2.1 bcm a year, which will increase to 6.7 bcm from 2023 through to 2034.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe\u2019s natgas woes have the potential to boost exports further:<\/strong> With no sign of a detente between Russia and its NATO rivals, the squeeze on European gas prices is expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-29\/don-t-mistake-the-gas-meltdown-for-end-to-europe-s-energy-crisis?sref=mmeFTDW1\">to last into 2023.<\/a> Egyptian oil shipments are expected to fall to 1 bcf\/d next summer due to rising domestic consumption, according to Oil Minister Tarek El Molla. But in the longer term, Europe\u2019s gas troubles could pave the way for Egypt to boost exports to the continent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And rival energy projects seem to be falling through: <\/strong>Last week, Israel\u2019s Environment Ministry may have temporarily scuttled <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0a0c6f0c-5606-4356-bddb-7fd353cac8d2\">a pipeline<\/a> by which Israel hopes to export UAE oil while bypassing the Suez Canal,<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-middle-east-israel-environment-tel-aviv-d53debc79ec9104322802984a2ed86a1\">according to AP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key to the plan to ramp up exports to Europe: The East Mediterranean Gas Forum. <\/strong>Headquartered in Cairo, the regional organization was ratified by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/721b0df8-87fd-400e-af60-663496bde9e8\">in September<\/a> after its founding members <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01a49990-c0a6-474a-9234-976ca6dc30c3\">signed the charter<\/a> last year. It brings founding members Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan and Palestine together to collaborate on strategy, development and financing in the sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All potential pipelines lead to Egypt: <\/strong>The EMGF forum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/891598e1-8197-40e4-91d6-93e212f9c000\">November meeting<\/a> saw the Madbouly government sign agreements with Greece and Israel that could help it grow exports to Europe \u2014 including pipeline plans galore. Under the MoUs, we can expect to see Greece and Egypt work more closely on natgas this year, while a new subsea pipeline between the two countries could be in the works. Israeli imports for re-export should also ramp up, and a pipeline for Israeli gas is also under consideration. That\u2019s in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/721b0df8-87fd-400e-af60-663496bde9e8\">planned link<\/a> between Cyprus\u2019 Aphrodite natural gas field and Egypt, currently expected to come online in 2024 or 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s also Lebanon: <\/strong>The renovation of the Arab Gas Pipeline to begin to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a808ab85-a831-4d56-9377-c799e5e29d18\">export natural gas<\/a> to Lebanon amidst their <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ade5b193-7fca-4466-aaeb-50dd2ff7338c\">electricity crisis<\/a> is expected to be ready by <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dfe7607a-1e8a-44f3-b3bd-69a00b463d71\">early next year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expect electricity interconnection projects to light up 2022:<\/strong> Electricity interconnection agreements were all the rage last year. We <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6e079557-f5dc-4dcc-9d7d-a3c6837afaf7\">inked agreements<\/a> with Greece and Cyprus on the<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e0cf0fa3-ab69-4d53-abb1-ad0d6187e7fe\">USD 4 bn EuroAfrica Interconnector<\/a> project, which will connect the electrical grids of Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus by late 2023 \u2014 and made a separate pact with Cyprus that would also see us connect our electricity grids. Jordan and Egypt are also set to double capacity on the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3abc79b1-c6ff-451c-8381-41b95085e383\">electricity link<\/a> between the two countries, part of a larger project to eventually link Egypt\u2019s grid to Libya, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. Meanwhile, a consortium of Orascom Construction (OC) and Japan\u2019s Hitachi ABB Power Grids <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/hardhats\/egypt-saudi-electricity-interconnection-finally-kicks-into-gear\/\">is working on<\/a> connecting our grid with Saudi Arabia\u2019s by 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NEXT WEEK- <\/strong>The second part of our infrastructure year ahead series will focus on another sector that is expected to be big in 2022: water.
