{"id":687481,"date":"2026-03-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/?post_type=hardhat&#038;p=687481"},"modified":"2026-03-11T04:02:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T04:02:31","slug":"turning-commercial-fleets-green-doesnt-just-make-environmental-sense-but-financial-sense-too","status":"publish","type":"hardhat","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/hardhats\/turning-commercial-fleets-green-doesnt-just-make-environmental-sense-but-financial-sense-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Turning commercial fleets green doesn\u2019t just make environmental sense, but financial sense too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>For years, electrifying commercial <\/strong><strong>fleet<\/strong><strong>s in Egypt was more about <\/strong><strong>sustainability headlines than bottom-line considerations. <\/strong>But with diesel prices at EGP 20.50 per liter as of yesterday and the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) talking about mandating carbon offsets, the calculus is changing, and sticking with traditional combustion engines could soon be a liability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>The biggest hurdle has always been the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isdb.org\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/documents\/2023-07\/Final%20IsDB-CEDARE%20E-Bus%20System%20Case%20Studies%20in%20MENA%20Region_0.pdf\" style=\"\">40-80% higher<\/a> upfront cost of a new electric truck. Companies like Shift EV are using a transition-as-a-service model: they cover the conversion cost of an existing diesel fleet, and the fleet owner repays them via a monthly subscription funded by fuel savings. This allows the client to see zero upfront capex and an immediate 60% reduction in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shift-ev.com\/industries\/ecommerce\/\" style=\"\">operating expenses from day one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The private sector is already making the move<\/strong>, with Egypt having more \u201cEVs on the road as a percentage and more EV sales in the commercial sector than any other country in Africa and the Middle East,\u201d Aly Eltayeb, CEO and co-founder of Shift EV, tells EnterpriseAM. A sizable 5% of the total commercial vehicle market in Egypt is now EVs, he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Snackmaker Edita is <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/02\/18\/kemet-adds-4-7-gw-of-new-renewable-energy-in-upper-egypt\/\" style=\"\">moving its 1.2k-truck fleet to electric<\/a><\/strong> through a partnership with Shift EV. Similarly, Alexbank and Orascom Investment Holding\u2019s Blu EV are developing a new microfinancing model to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/02\/02\/alexbank-blu-ev-launch-ev-microfinancing-haps-big-investment-push-and-beltones-moroccan-ticket\/\" style=\"\">move Egypt\u2019s two-wheeled delivery fleet to electric<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The pitch<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The carbon factor:<\/strong> A major new catalyst arrived last month from the FRA \u2014 under which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabfinance.com\/en\/news\/newdetails\/fra-mandates-carbon-disclosure-and-offsets-for-large-non-bank-financial-firms\" style=\"\">new<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabfinance.com\/en\/news\/newdetails\/fra-mandates-carbon-disclosure-and-offsets-for-large-non-bank-financial-firms\" style=\"\">rules mandate<\/a> that non-banking financial institutions with capital over EGP 100 mn must disclose emissions and offset 20% of their footprint through Egypt\u2019s voluntary carbon market. As this mandate eventually trickles down to larger corporations, an electric fleet becomes both a cost-saver and a source of tradable carbon credits \u2014 or a way to dodge mandatory offset costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Cost is key:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019ve worked with 30 different customers. They span over multinationals, Egyptian market leaders, and state-owned enterprises \u2014 there\u2019s one common thread that they all have: Going green has only one meaning, it\u2019s generating cost savings for them. We\u2019ve always been very cognizant that our product is fundamentally a cost-saving product,\u201d Eltayeb tells us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>By the numbers:<\/strong> The core financial driver is the widening gap between electricity and diesel prices. Driving 100 km on electricity costs roughly EGP 50-65. The same 100 km in a diesel van \u2014 averaging 8 km per liter \u2014 costs EGP 220.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Savings at the repair shop: <\/strong>Maintenance costs for trucks \u201chave increased by three to five times\u201d over the last few years, but when you retrofit a vehicle, up to 80% of the operating costs are eliminated, with EVs having <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/absgroup.com.sg\/maintaining-electric-commercial-fleet-best-practices-cost\/\" style=\"\">60% fewer moving parts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Retrofitting helps on replacement costs:<\/strong> To keep fleets reliable, vehicles need to be upgraded and swapped out for newer models on a regular basis \u2014 an increasingly expensive task given the rise in vehicle prices over recent years, Eltayeb notes. \u201cWhen we offer to retrofit vehicles, we\u2019re giving them a second life of 8-12 more years on the road. Doing so eliminates a massive capex spend. For a 100-vehicle fleet \u2014 made of mid-sized trucks \u2014 this could amount to EGP 100 mn saved,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But grid constraints and charging infrastructure costs remain an issue. <\/strong>While the last-mile \u2014 bikes and small vans \u2014 is easy to electrify, heavy-duty long-haul remains difficult due to Egypt\u2019s grid constraints and heat-related battery degradation. Companies still face shadow costs in upgrading their depots, as a fleet of 25 vans can require the same <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nectarbits.ca\/blog\/fleet-electrification-vs-traditional-fuel-delivery-business-guide\/\" style=\"\">power draw as 40 homes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What\u2019s next?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In the next few years, we can expect to see \u201ca higher level of vehicle penetration<\/strong>,\u201d Eltayeb tells us, including an expansion from a B2B-dominated market into B2BC and B2C. \u201cI think the future here is really bright from an adoption perspective,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We could see more international players stepping in:<\/strong> Strategic partners like the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are stepping in to bridge this \u2014 financing electric bus expansions for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/home\/work-with-us\/projects\/psd\/53556.html\" style=\"\">Abou Ghaly Motors<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/home\/news-and-events\/news\/2025\/-10-6-million-loan-for-electric-buses-egypt.html\" style=\"\">Go Bus<\/a> last year.
