Egypt is calling in private sector players to invest in new river units for the transport of goods across several sectors, including \u2014 but not limited to \u2014 petroleum materials and mineral resources. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>An update? <\/strong>The new strategy is an update to the ministry's previous <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3d6f68f8-f85b-4f56-8429-a99ea5c1f05a\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">comprehensive strategy<\/a> launched back in 2023. The strategy aimed to outline several areas of development, including the building of a network of river ports, expanding the use of waterways to transport cargo and individuals, and setting up a digital river information services database to guide and manage inland transport. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The bigger picture:<\/strong> The transport sector is projected to garner EGP 560.2 bn in total investments this fiscal year \u2014 EGP 401.4 bn in public investments and EGP 158.8 bn in private investments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Where is the money going? <\/strong>The government is looking to boost river transport freight capacity to 8 mn tons per annum in the fiscal year 2025-2026, Planning and International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mped.gov.eg\/singlenews?id=6166&lang=en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in April. The government is looking to bring four new and developed river quays and four new river units online this fiscal year, according to a document seen by EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3d6f68f8-f85b-4f56-8429-a99ea5c1f05a\/gov%25e2%2580%2599t-wants-the-private-sector-to-get-in-on-developing-egypt%25e2%2580%2599s-river-transport\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Transport Ministry\u2019s plan<\/a> entails creating a network of river ports for the movement of cargo and containers; providing passenger and cargo transport services along the Nile, with ports spread across all governorates; constructing new canal navigation locks that meet modern engineering standards to increase the capacity of the lock system; and clearing, dredging, and maintaining navigational channels to ensure a safe navigation path to facilitate navigation for Nile cruises, tourist ships, and commercial traffic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It also aims to boost riverways\u2019 share of cargo movements to 10% by 2038<\/strong>, National Nile Company for River Transport advisor Ahmed El Shamy told EnterpriseAM. The target is ambitious yet attainable if Egypt doubles down on upgrading the sector\u2019s infrastructure and modifying the waterways to deepen riverbeds and address other traffic chokeholds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>To sweeten the pot for investors:<\/strong> The River Transport Act \u2014 which aims to attract more investment into the country\u2019s inland waterways \u2014 was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/11ce99aa-e6a8-4f73-9550-a25235da1870\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed into law in 2022<\/a> after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/51fcc8c7-c0c9-4cc8-aaba-691d7d276bbd\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">receiving approval<\/a> from the House of Representatives. The law opened up the river transport sector to private investment and put the River Transport Authority (RTA) in charge of licensing river boats, Nile cruises and floating units.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> Egypt is looking to clamp down the volume of trucks on the road, with a single river unit replacing around 40 land transport trucks. The move would slash the cost of road maintenance as well as cut down on trucking related emissions and road accidents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REFRESHER- <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s river transport network consists of four primary waterways \u2014 Cairo-Damietta, Cairo-Alexandria, Cairo-Aswan, and Cairo-Wadi Halfa. Altogether, the four waterways span 1,770 km. Additionally, there are several secondary waterways in the country\u2019s overall river transport network, which together span another 1.7k km. The majority of the network (3,136 km) can be used for inland water transport, but a smaller proportion (2,192 km) is classified as first-class navigable waterways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Steering the course:<\/strong> The RTA has tapped an undisclosed Austrian firm to deploy the Nile River Information Services. The system will deploy electronic mapping services for the safe passage for river units, allowing for increased exchange of information between river units and the waterway\u2019s authority. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AD Ports <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/aef81f59-32cf-4d1f-bafb-4be635cb0556\/this-morning:-another-eight-green-hydrogen-mous-coming%3F\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">was rumoured to be interested.<\/a><\/strong> UAE-based port operation AD Port was reportedly eyeing investing some EUR 500 mn to develop Egypt\u2019s river transport infrastructure. The capital spend would have funded new fuel stations for barges, developing river boats, and bringing amphibious buses to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We\u2019re expecting a berth for handling grains in Qena:<\/strong> The RTA <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/efbfbb2b-9bc4-4c2a-849c-b2b2f77d595d\/is-there-a-real-estate-bubble%3F\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">is planning to build<\/a> an EGP 350 mn berth for grain and crop trading at Dandara River Port in Qena. The RTA reportedly tapped homegrown <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/meco-elkamhawy\/?trk=ppro_cprof&originalSubdomain=sa\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Modern Engineering Consultant Office<\/a> to consult on and oversee the development of the project, government sources told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alborsaanews.com\/2025\/01\/25\/1863815\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Borsa<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Aswan, Sudan river-link could be back on the table:<\/strong> Egypt and Sudan agreed to explore ways to boost cooperation in bilateral river transportation during <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sis.gov.eg\/Story\/209071\/El-Wazir-discusses-coop.-with-Sudanese-Minister-of-Urban-Development?lang=\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a meeting<\/a> between Transport Minister Kamel El Wazir and his Sudanese counterpart Salah Hamed Ismail last month.
