{"id":586304,"date":"2023-05-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/goinggreens\/are-small-reactors-the-future-of-nuclear-energy\/"},"modified":"2023-05-09T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T00:00:00","slug":"are-small-reactors-the-future-of-nuclear-energy","status":"publish","type":"goinggreen","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/goinggreens\/are-small-reactors-the-future-of-nuclear-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Are small reactors the future of nuclear energy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Small modular reactors are the latest innovation in nuclear energy \u2014 and they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">could one day make their way here. <\/span><span>Local media last month reported than <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9ddc8575-466c-4936-bde6-087b9b11edd3\" style=\"\">an American and a Russian firm<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> are competing to build small nuclear reactors (SMRs) here and have held talks with the Nuclear Power Plants Authority on the potential projects, according to a local news outlet. So what are SMRs \u2014 and why are some hailing them as the successor to traditional nuclear power plants? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The flat-packs of nuclear reactors: <\/span><span>SMRs are compact nuclear reactors that can generate up to 300 MW(e) per unit \u2014  around a third of the generating capacity of conventional nuclear reactors. The \u201cmodular\u201d in the name refers to the fact that where traditional reactors have to be built from the ground up, SMR systems and parts can be produced in factories and then easily transported and assembled on site, per the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/what-are-small-modular-reactors-smrs\" style=\"\">International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Is smaller better? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">SMRs\u2019 smaller scale and ease of assembly could bring benefits in terms of affordability, efficiency, and flexibility, the IAEA says. SMRs can be fitted in facilities where larger nuclear plants are not suitable. Their lower electricity output means SMRs can be linked to rural electrical grids that have fewer transmission lines or lower capacity, or used off-grid to power specific sites. Where the custom-built nature of conventional reactors brings high costs and long construction timelines, SMRs can be prefabricated and shipped direct to side \u2014 and added to as energy demand at any given site increases. Their size means that SMRs also pose fewer safety risks and require less refueling than conventional reactor, according to the IAEA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">SMRs could help speed up the transition away from coal: <\/span><span>Countries including France, India, Poland, Romania, the UK, and the US are looking into fitting SMRs on or near the sites of decommissioned coal plants, according to the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/repurposing-fossil-fuel-power-plant-sites-with-smrs-to-ease-clean-energy-transition\" style=\"\">IAEA<\/a><\/span><span>. Existing infrastructure at coal plants \u2014 including water storage, desalination, and wastewater treatment systems, compressed air systems, and cooling towers \u2014 can all be repurposed for SMRs, while supply chains for coal plants and SMRs are also similar, the agency notes. \u201cWe should accelerate SMR deployment and on the other the decommissioning of coal stations. To achieve those two goals, using existing coal sites to <\/span><span>implement nuclear projects can facilitate this switch,\u201d EDF\u2019s Anne Falchi told the IAEA in a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/repurposing-fossil-fuel-power-plant-sites-with-smrs-to-ease-clean-energy-transition\" style=\"\">webinar<\/a><\/span><span> last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">They could also power green hydrogen plants: <\/span><span>Small reactors could also replace fossil fuels in industrial processes \u2014 and could serve to power plants producing low-carbon energy carriers like biofuels and green hydrogen. US firm NuScale and Shell Global are in the early stages of developing an SMR-powered green hydrogen plant, per <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energytech.com\/energy-efficiency\/article\/21255747\/small-nuclear-designer-nuscale-power-joins-shell-in-evaluating-future-of-green-hydrogen\" style=\"\">Energy Tech<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">That could be relevant for us:<\/span><span> The government is aggressively pursuing investment in our nascent green hydrogen sector, signing more than a dozen MoUs worth bns of USD with private firms for projects in recent months, with more in the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/aef81f59-32cf-4d1f-bafb-4be635cb0556\" style=\"\">pipeline<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">SMR firms are looking to target emerging markets: <\/span><span>NuScale and the UK\u2019s Rolls-Royce Consortium are both targeting African and South American markets, where \u201cless robust grid systems might not support the energy load of traditional large-scale reactors,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20200309-are-small-nuclear-power-plants-safe-and-efficient\" style=\"\">Yale360<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> reports. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">HOLD UP- This all sounds great. But the SMR industry is still in its infancy, and there are some big caveats: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#1- The tech is still in its early stages:<\/span><span> There are more than 80 SMR designs in development globally, according to the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/new-crp-challenges-gaps-and-opportunities-for-managing-spent-fuel-from-small-modular-reactors-t13021\" style=\"\">IAEA<\/a><\/span><span>. But there are just five small reactors actually in operation so far: three in Russia, one in India, and one built by China and exported to Pakistan, per the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/nuclear-fuel-cycle\/nuclear-power-reactors\/small-nuclear-power-reactors.aspx\" style=\"\">World Nuclear Association<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. More SMRs are under construction or in the licensing stage in countries including China, Russia, USA, Canada, South Korea and Argentina, the IAEA says<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#2- Regulation is not in place: <\/span><span>Only <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-approves-design-nuscale-small-modular-nuclear-reactor-2023-01-20\/\" style=\"\">one SMR design<\/a><\/span><span> has so far received regulatory approval in the US and there is as of yet <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/new-generation-reactors-needs-licensing-leap-2023-03-09\/\" style=\"\">no consensus<\/a><\/span><span> on how to regulate SMRs globally. The IAEA last year launched the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/services\/key-programmes\/smr-platforms-nhsi#:~:text=The%20NHSI%20is%20a%20complementary,and%20the%20NHSI%20Industry%20Track.\" style=\"\">Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. The two-track program will try to get governments to develop \u201ccommon regulatory positions without compromising nuclear safety and national sovereignty,\u201d while also encouraging industry players to create \u201cstandardized industrial approaches for SMR development, manufacturing, construction, and operations.\u201d The hope is that shared regulation will make the rollout of SMR tech worldwide faster and cheaper. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#3- SMRs have some of the same drawbacks as their big siblings: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The risk of a nuclear accident is reduced but not eliminated with SMRs \u2014 and smaller reactors still produce radioactive waste, for which we still have no permanent storage solutions.
