{"id":610784,"date":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/blackboards\/what-are-schools-doing-to-regulate-the-use-of-ai\/"},"modified":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T00:00:00","slug":"what-are-schools-doing-to-regulate-the-use-of-ai","status":"publish","type":"blackboard","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/blackboards\/what-are-schools-doing-to-regulate-the-use-of-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"What are schools doing to regulate the use of AI?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>What\u2019s being done at international <\/strong><strong>schools in Egypt to regulate the use of <\/strong><strong>generative AI<\/strong><strong> in classrooms?<\/strong> Last year, we looked at how K-12 teachers began to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/44389649-4d17-4f9d-9bbf-201de53053a3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">adapt to the emergence of the technology<\/a>, with some teachers telling us at the time that \u2014 in addition to keeping a sharp eye on potential illicit use of the technology \u2014 they were beginning to integrate generative AI tools into their classrooms and guiding students on how to use it. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/blackboards\/automation-learning-egypts-international-schools-using-adaptive-learning\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Adaptive learning technology<\/a> is no stranger to Egypt\u2019s international schools, as platforms such as CenturyTech have been used in most if not all of them for years; but the policies mediating the use of new AI technology are slowly catching up, our sources tell us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This is a question that\u2019s been at the forefront of education policy discussion around the <\/strong><strong>world:<\/strong> Some schools and universities abroad have been integrating AI and tools such as ChatGPT in their curricula, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/generation-ai-education-reluctantly-embraces-bots-2023-09-07\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, as OpenAI \u2014 the developer behind ChatGPT \u2014 is looking to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/openai-explores-how-get-chatgpt-into-classrooms-2023-11-16\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">work with teachers<\/a> to help guide them on best practices. UNESCO issued the world\u2019s first ever <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000386693\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">global guidelines<\/a> on the use of GenAI in academic research in September in a bid to set a framework to promote the safe integration of artificial intelligence into school curricula, while taming the technology. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Here in Egypt, AI rules and regulations haven\u2019t been codified on the school level yet:<\/strong>\u201cMonitoring and controlling the use of AI is still weak, even globally. I think the world is still in the process of passing legally binding regulations to guide its use,\u201d Alyaa Said, chief communications officer at CIRA Education, told Enterprise. Some schools such as BCCIS have a code of conduct for IT that also applies to the use of AI \u2014 think firewalls, internet search alarms and data protection schemes \u2014 but AI-specific regulations have yet to flood the schools of Cairo, CEO of Eduhive, which manages BCCIS, Karim Mostafa told us. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AI platforms are not integrated into school curricula yet but are used to support <\/strong><strong>day-to-day learning:<\/strong> Currently, there remains a dearth of AI-savvy platforms for schools to build their curriculums on, but Mostafa says AI-derived technology is used as a part of the everyday education in BCCIS in an effort to keep high school students engaged while also making efficiency gains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There are plenty of risks involved with AI<\/strong>, such as cybersecurity, data privacy, plagiarism, and high dependence among students that undermines learning, Mostafa said. However, he sees that AI presents more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to the business of learning. \u201cPlagiarism is already there\u2026but AI is going to revolutionize education,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>To mitigate these risks, schools are focusing on raising awareness:<\/strong> \u201cWe host awareness sessions for both the students and their parents to inform them of the negative consequences while making sure they are able to get the best out of this kind of technology,\u201d Said tells us. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And they\u2019re putting comprehensive evaluation schemes in place as a cheating repellent:<\/strong>Cross sectional assessment is one way to mitigate against the risk of plagiarism and the copyright issues that arise with the use of generative AI tools. \u201cWe have to change the way we test\u201d to focus more on conceptual understanding, rather than information retention, Mostafa tells us.
