That shift towards the digital was accelerated by covid, which in 2020 <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7ca753dc-e568-4a97-b8df-286601a330c8\" style=\"\">forced academic institutions shut<\/a><\/span><span> and cleared the way for remote learning. Schools have since adopted learning management systems like <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.google.com\/intl\/en_ALL\/workspace-for-education\/classroom\/\" style=\"\">Google Classroom<\/a><\/span><span>, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.seesaw.me\/\" style=\"\">Seesaw<\/a><\/span><span>, and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classdojo.com\/\" style=\"\">ClassDojo<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, which help them administer school work online by enabling teachers to hold video meetings, assign homework, connect with parents, or give rewards. But that\u2019s just half the story: In parallel, the local market is budding with e-learning platforms that provide students with similar resources on their own time, untethered to school. Today we\u2019ll take a look at these platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Who are the big players at home? <\/span><span style=\"\">The internet is awash with e-learning platforms of all<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> shapes and sizes. Here\u2019s a rundown of some of the most popular homegrown apps, based on our survey of parents and educators:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orcas.io\/\" style=\"\">Orcas<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> offers personalized in-person or online tutoring to kindergarten to grade 12 students in 20 countries, predominantly in Egypt, UAE, and KSA. The platform caters to students of all school systems but specializes in the curricula of international schools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/madrasty.com\/eg-ar\" style=\"\">Madrasty<\/a><\/span><span>and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abwaab.com\/en-EG\" style=\"\">Abwaab<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">help break down the curricula of language and Arabic schools by offering pre-recorded, standardized videos of teachers explaining different subjects as well as exercises and tests. Madrasty also features contemporary songs that tackle different topics and interactive live sessions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selaheltelmeez.com\/\" style=\"\">Selah El Telmeez<\/a><\/span><span> and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aladwaa.com\/\" style=\"\">Aladwaa Education<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">are household names that have gone digital, modernizing their offering of classic educational books with online videos, exercises, and self-assessments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Demand for local apps has surged in recent years:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Since Orcas\u2019 launch in 2019, the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> platform\u2019s user base has been on average more than doubling annually in both Egypt and the UAE, CEO Hossam Taher told Enterprise. The platform currently has over 20k paying learners. Similarly, Madrasty, which was launched two years ago, currently has 19.2k subscribed students, according to co-founder and Head of Growth Mourad Sioufi. In the last year alone, the platform\u2019s user base has grown seven-fold while its conversion rate of registered to paying users has risen five-fold, Sioufi said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">It all boils down to one simple premise \u2014 plugging gaps in formal education: <\/span><span style=\"\">Proliferating<\/span><span> population growth means that around 2 mn students join the formal education system every year, Sioufi tells us. While <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/38d55538-d4cc-4185-acbe-37480244c67e\" style=\"\">inadequate infrastructure<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> limits schools\u2019 ability to cater to these numbers, private tutoring can be costly. \u201cThis is where we come in by providing affordable and \u2026 high quality education to all people,\u201d he says. Orcas, meanwhile, capitalizes on the market need for personalization. \u201cWe offer a 1:1 approach in the most affordable way possible given the technology we leverage and learning outcomes we bring about,\u201d says Taher. \u201cThat\u2019s something schools can\u2019t do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Many of these platforms aim to offer a one-stop shop where students can have all their<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> learning needs met.<\/span><span> Successful platforms are those that combine all verticals \u2014 such as tutors, videos, and written material \u2014 using a data-driven model, says Taher. There are logistical perks too:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201ce-learning resolves the dilemma of picking tutors for different subjects and the hassle of sending or driving the kids to different tutors,\u201d says private tutor Marihan Ghali. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Digitization creates the room for tech advancement: <\/span><span style=\"\">Orcas, for instance, aims to create a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> digital learning environment to facilitate data collection for AI integration, Taher says. The platform plans to roll out AI-powered features, such as content creation tools that help tutors generate slides, videos, and images. Another feature will see AI pulling information from transcripts of recorded sessions to answer student questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">This is not to say that e-learning platforms outdo \u2014 or can replace \u2014 schools: <\/span><span style=\"\">\u201cIn our<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> model, school is where you pick up the information and Orcas is where you come to study, analyze, and deepen your understanding of that information,\u201d Taher says. \u201cThe two experiences complete one another.\u201d School is indispensable, he says, largely because it meets families\u2019 logistical needs, offering safety, childcare, education, and an avenue for socialization all at once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Still, e-learning isn\u2019t everyone\u2019s top choice:<\/span><span style=\"\"> For a lot of people, private tutoring hinges on<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> word of mouth, says former educator Mushira Sabry. Many parents prefer educators who they\u2019ve personally heard about, with a proclivity for those who teach at schools \u2014 a criterion they believe ensures that the needed teacher certifications are in place and that the instructor will be able to deliver lessons in the style of their child\u2019s school, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">And online school resources limit the appeal of independent e-learning apps: <\/span><span style=\"\">Because all<\/span><span> international schools and a lot of governmental and experimental schools offer recorded lessons online, external apps that do the same thing might not be as effective, Sabry says. There\u2019s a wealth of online school resources available without charge to students, school director Nagwa Abdel Aal tells us. These include online textbook supplements, material uploaded by school teachers to <\/span><span>Google Classroom, the Education Ministry\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moe.gov.eg\/en\/elearningenterypage\/\" style=\"\">e-learning portal<\/a><\/span><span>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> or Cambridge resources such as sample exams, exercises, and question banks.
