influencers aren\u2019t just entertainment anymore \u2014 they materially <\/strong><strong>shape where Egyptians choose to spend their money.<\/strong> With Egypt\u2019s F&B sector becoming increasingly crowded and competitive, brands are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/12\/23\/shock-first-explain-later-is-this-the-future-of-marketing\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/12\/23\/shock-first-explain-later-is-this-the-future-of-marketing\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fighting harder for attention<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/12\/23\/shock-first-explain-later-is-this-the-future-of-marketing\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>. Influencer marketing should be the play \u2014 but across the sector, we found skepticism, shrinking budgets, and growing backlash against paid endorsements. EnterpriseAM spoke with marketing leads and creative strategists to understand how influencer marketing is being utilized \u2014 or deliberately avoided \u2014 by some of the country\u2019s top restaurants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>High-end brands don\u2019t pay for reach \u2014 they curate it. <\/strong>High-end restaurants with established brand equity say they don\u2019t allocate a budget to influencer fees or paid social ads, Roulla Soussou, marketing director of Baky Hospitality Group (BHG), told EnterpriseAM. The group, which operates restaurants including Sachi and Kazoku, has grown its accounts organically through industrial goodwill, curated experiences, and word-of-mouth, according to Soussou.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>For upscale venues, exclusivity and authenticity trump visibility metrics.<\/strong> Soft openings and private tastings for loyal guests, lifestyle personalities, and media figures \u2014 not paid collaborators \u2014 is how they choose to create content without paying for coverage. These \u201corganic invitations [target] people who already love the brand and will likely share the experience,\u201d said Soussou. Roughly 10% of BHG\u2019s marketing spend goes to organic PR \u2014 media relations and editorial exposure \u2014 but none to influencer fees or paid ads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>F&B consultant and creative director Omnia Adel took a similar approach in <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/culture.onaplate\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Culture<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/culture.onaplate\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">on a Plate<\/a><\/strong>, a high-ticket six-course dinner she organized without a single media buy. \u201cWe didn\u2019t post every day. We took one good photoshoot that showed what we were aiming for \u2014 the chef, the food, the atmosphere,\u201d she said. For high-end concepts, restraint is part of the strategy. \u201cIf I am a high-end restaurant, I can\u2019t take too many [pictures] because you\u2019re supposed to be unreachable.\u201d Instead of influencer fees, visibility is built through strong visuals, curated PR events, and word-of-mouth. \u201cInfluencers are for reach \u2014 but we don\u2019t use them. They call us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Influencer marketing is undeniably powerful \u2014 but misused.<\/strong> Some F&B brands remain hesitant to adopt influencer marketing, viewing it as overhyped and poorly executed \u2014 and they\u2019re not entirely wrong. \u201cIt\u2019s a strong tool with a lot of potential if applied correctly,\u201d Adel admitted, \u201c[but] it\u2019s not about likes anymore \u2014 it\u2019s about how credible and persuasive the person is.\u201d Much of the resistance stems from flawed campaign design. PR and communications teams often rely on their own influencer networks without proper vetting, assigning campaigns based on relationships rather than relevance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The core problem is an obsession with follower count that ignores brand alignment.<\/strong> \u201cThe mismatch hurts credibility on both sides,\u201d says Adel, and when a campaign falls flat, influencers take the brunt of the blame, even if it\u2019s the brand that didn\u2019t do their homework. Many credible influencers have exited the Egyptian market altogether, frustrated by an environment that rewards popularity over purpose.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Polish over product remains dominant.<\/strong> \u201cPeople are spending on interiors so the place is Instagrammable,\u201d said Adel, but she urges operators to stop cutting corners on menu design and concept integrity, emphasizing that menu engineering and consulting are (or should be) at the forefront of their priorities. She also warns against poor pricing and bloated menus: \u201cChoose your niche, limit your menu, and don\u2019t confuse the customer,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re a grill house? Stay a grill house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What actually works?<\/strong> In a saturated market, the most effective content is immersive, story-driven, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/12\/28\/brand-authenticity-is-dead-long-live-brand-authenticity\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">authentic feeling<\/a> \u2014 not overly produced or influencer-heavy. User- and employee-generated content that showcases real atmosphere, staff moments, and behind-the-scenes clips helps brands stand out, Adel added. Soussou echoed the sentiment: short, mood-driven Reels capturing ambiance and curated experiences now outperform traditional food shots. By localizing specialized segments \u2014 including oncology drugs, insulin, genetic vaccines, and pharmaceutical ingredients \u2014 Egypt is positioning itself as a regional manufacturing powerhouse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt has begun manufacturing targeted oncology treatments \u2014 a move requiring <\/strong><strong>significant capital and long-term commitment. <\/strong>Eva Pharma has inaugurated a European-certified industrial complex with an annual capacity of 22 mn units \u2014 some 60k units\/day \u2014 exceeding local demand and paving the way for exports. The company has developed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/11\/05\/eva-pharma-launches-oncology-arm-with-18-locally-manufactured-drugs\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">18 specialized oncology drugs<\/a>, seven of which are already on the market, according to CEO Riad Armanious. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The lineup includes the first local biosimilar for a leukemia treatment <\/strong>\u2014 previously a USD 44 mn import bill \u2014 and a local alternative to the lung cancer drug Tagrisso, which costs USD 14.4 mn annually to import. Local production has slashed patient costs from c. EGP 200k to an average of EGP 57\u201359k for local alternatives, saving the state bns in subsidized healthcare and ins. costs, according to Armanious.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Eva Pharma has also inked a deal with Switzerland\u2019s Roche to <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2023\/06\/11\/roche-partners-with-eva-pharma-to-produce-meds-for-organ-transplant-patients\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">localize the<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2023\/06\/11\/roche-partners-with-eva-pharma-to-produce-meds-for-organ-transplant-patients\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">manufacturing of immunosuppressants<\/a><\/strong> for organ transplant patients at its 10th of Ramadan facility, targeting exports to emerging African markets. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In collaboration with US pharma giant Eli Lilly, Eva Pharma is also <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2024\/12\/18\/eva-pharma-brings-locally-produced-insulin-glargine-to-market-for-the-first-time\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">producing Insulin<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2024\/12\/18\/eva-pharma-brings-locally-produced-insulin-glargine-to-market-for-the-first-time\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Glargine locally<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> The project aims to turn Egypt from an importer of 6 mn doses annually to an exporter of 74 mn doses. The company has MoUs with 56 countries and targets USD 100 mn in insulin by 2030. Kuwait\u2019s Ali Alghanim & Sons Group is also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/02\/04\/el-khatibs-second-day-in-kuwait-ali-alghanim-mulls-insulin-factory-red-sea-resort-in-egypt-and-more\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">exploring setting up an insulin factory<\/a> in Egypt in partnership with foreign firms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AND- Egypt is doubling down on high-tech vaccines.<\/strong> In February, Eva Pharma partnered with France\u2019s DNA Script and Belgium\u2019s Quantum Biosciences to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/02\/06\/eva-pharma-inks-technology-transfer-agreement-to-produce-mrna-vaccines\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">produce mRNA vaccines<\/a> at an annual volume of 100 mn doses. Operations are expected to begin this year, initially serving the domestic market before venturing into exports. Once the tech transfer is complete, Egypt would be equipped to produce vaccines for any current or future viruses without needing sub-zero cold chain storage, Armanious tells us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt currently imports over 90% of its raw materials and active pharma ingredients <\/strong><strong>(APIs)<\/strong>, leaving the industry vulnerable to FX fluctuations and supply chain disruptions, Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) head Ali El Ghamrawy told EnterpriseAM. Last week, Arab API <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/01\/18\/arab-api-kicks-off-construction-on-factory-to-address-90-reliance-on-pharma-raw-material-imports-2\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">broke ground<\/a> on an EGP 7.7 bn (USD 165 mn) facility in the SCZone \u2014 the first of its kind in Egypt. The 96k-sqm plant is set to produce APIs and intermediates, with plans to export to India. A Chinese firm is currently in talks with the EDA to establish an additional local API plant, El Ghamrawy previously told us. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>With the African pharma market expanding, Egypt has its eyes set on becoming a <\/strong><strong>regional hub for raw materials.<\/strong> As of now, local API production covers only 8-10% of domestic needs, Eipico chairman Ahmed Kelani said, adding that he estimates the sector requires approximately 60 additional factories to fully bridge the gap.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The SCZone is increasingly positioning pharma as a pillar of its industrial strategy.<\/strong> In December, Ateco Pharma inaugurated the second and third phases of its Ain Sokhna facility, using advanced Swiss-German technology from Rommelag to double production capacity for intravenous solutions and injectable ampoules. The expansion, slated for full operational rollout in Q1 2024, cements Ateco\u2019s position as Egypt\u2019s leading exporter of medical solutions, with a footprint already spanning 13 countries. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Beyond Ateco, the SCZone is hosting a cluster of high-value projects<\/strong>, including the USD 220 mn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/12\/17\/elsewedy-eyes-the-gulf-sczone-locks-in-solar-pharma-and-sinai-tourism-investors-catch-a-break\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">GennVax vaccine and serum facility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Looking ahead, Egypt\u2019s pharma pipeline remains robust.<\/strong> The government has reportedly received inquiries from seven global pharma giants looking to expand locally this year, either by leveraging the Gypto Pharma (Medicine City) hub or via partnerships with domestic investors. These ventures are expected to bring in at least USD 500 mn in fresh capital to establish five new factories.
