Elsewedy <\/strong><strong>Electric: <\/strong>The Financial Regulatory Authority rejected a mixed cash-and-share acquisition offer submitted by Abu Dhabi-listed holding company Sagas Investments to acquire 100% of EGX-listed industrial heavyweight Elsewedy Electric, citing governance, valuation, and minority rights concerns, the regulator said in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2025\/10\/932.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement (pdf)<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p For many, this marks the end of an era and the close of a pivotal chapter in pop culture. For others? It was inevitable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>So, what\u2019s the tea?<\/strong> In March 2024, former MTV video jockey Dave Holmes launched an audio documentary series in the form of a podcast titled <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/72ciF7KytABH26JEgCh1WT\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Who Killed the Video Star?<\/a> Holmes dedicated the show to dissecting the history of MTV, which launched in 1982, soon proving to be an unprecedented phenomenon up until the mid noughties. In the podcast, Holmes conducts interviews with industry experts, former MTV employees, and once-loyal MTV watchers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A slow, sad decay:<\/strong> Once a sacred aspect of every \u201880s and \u201890s teenager\u2019s life, MTV, which revolutionised and vitalized the music video industry, has become a desolate wasteland as far as the greenback is concerned. Producers have lost the desire to invest in big-budget music videos when social media is right there, Jennifer Byrne, head of development at Academy Films, told the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/oct\/18\/no-one-makes-money-from-them-with-mtv-channels-switching-off-is-the-music-video-under-threat\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Before it changed the game, MTV struggled to play.<\/strong> The channel\u2019s success wasn\u2019t particularly successful, having suffered myriad losses and struggled to retain advertisers for its first two years or so, owing to its initial reluctance to air videos by black artists. Its racist policies, however, would soon be rectified on the back of the success of Michael Jackson, who had just dropped his magnum opus: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2ANVost0y2y52ema1E9xAZ?si=WSJFZJ3aRNG0rCr8iFrhDA\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Thriller<\/a>. The album reshaped not only pop, but the music video industry. MTV began airing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Thriller<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Zi_XLOBDo_Y?si=Cp9PyvzG2ezhCLbm\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Billie Jean<\/a>, and so it found success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>MTV\u2019s peak:<\/strong> Holmes reviews the channel\u2019s content evolution, from long-form music videos to series and reality shows \u2014 and the widely popular events it once hosted, such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/celebs\/g31178585\/mtv-spring-break-photos\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring Break<\/a>, in which the audience became the stars themselves. MTV\u2019s success culminated in the launch of the very first Video Music Awards (VMAs) in 1984, through which the world was properly introduced to the iconic <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gkSxhG4cbPo\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Madonna<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Holmes notes the channel\u2019s rise, the brilliant decisions taken by its management, and <\/strong><strong>the ones that ultimately killed it.<\/strong> He dissects the era in which MTV\u2019s star shined, and in doing so, makes the eight-part audio documentary feel more like an engrossing film rather than a podcast. The episodes are expertly produced, and the soundscape alongside Holmes\u2019 distinct narrative style make it one of the most entertaining audio experiences out there.
