BIG STORY TODAY-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>Net foreign assets (NFAs) in Egypt\u2019s banking sector shrank for the first time<\/strong><strong> in three months by nearly USD 583 mn to hit USD 17.9 bn in August<\/strong>, marking a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/09288d20-2c11-4acb-a2e4-759a4fb15e12\/%253cmark%253enet%253c%2Fmark%253e%253cmark%253e-foreign%253c%2Fmark%253e%253cmark%253e-assets%253c%2Fmark%253e-hit-fresh-high-of-usd-18.5-bn-in-july\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">3.3% m-o-m decrease<\/a>, according to data from the Central Bank of Egypt. On an annual basis, our banking sector almost doubled its net foreign assets, compared to USD 9.7 bn in August 2024, according to CBE\u2019s historical data. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why do NFAs matter? <\/strong>Think of NFAs as the banking system\u2019s core financial buffer \u2014 the net difference between the foreign currency banks hold (assets like USD and EUR) and what they owe to entities abroad (liabilities). A positive and growing NFA signals health: a strong capacity to cover import bills. In that case, the EGP will generally hold steady or even appreciate. But when NFAs shrink or turn negative, it means we owe more FX than we hold \u2014 and that\u2019s when the EGP tends to slide against key foreign currencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Behind the dip: <\/strong>\u201cThe NFA narrowing was due to a decline in banks\u2019 foreign assets by c. 2% m-o-m, which we attribute to the regular m-o-m liabilities. Over 150 activists from more than 20 countries have been detained in international waters, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail to deliver desperately needed food, meds, and water <\/strong><strong>filtration equipment to Gaza\u2019s starved population.<\/strong> Flotilla organizers condemned Israel\u2019s deployment of water cannons, scrambling of communications systems, and boarding of the flotilla vessels as an act of piracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The seizure of the vessels sparked immediate global backlash and protests across <\/strong><strong>multiple continents.<\/strong> Turkey denounced Israel\u2019s actions as \u201can act of terror,\u201d Colombia ordered the expulsion of Israel\u2019s entire diplomatic delegation and terminated the country\u2019s freetrade agreement with the occupying state, and Malaysia stated that \u201cIsrael has shown utter contempt not only for the rights of the Palestinian people but also for the conscience of the world.\u201d Protests erupted in cities in Italy \u2014 where major labor unions called for a nationwide general strike \u2014 as well as in Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Turkey, and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>As detained activists face deportation, Israel\u2019s defense minister issued what he called a <\/strong><strong>last chance for Palestinians to flee Gaza City<\/strong>, stating that \u201cthose who remain [will be considered] terrorists and terror supporters.\u201d The Israeli military has closed Al Rashid Street, Gaza\u2019s main coastal highway, further tightening the noose around the city. Just 20% are looking for main residences, while 13% see their purchases mainly as investment windows for capital gains. Smaller numbers are interested in buy-to-let properties, retirement homes, and places for their children or extended family. Among UAE-based investors, 36% expressed interest in branded residential purchases, compared to 49% of Saudi HNWIs. 81% of global HNWIs indicated that they were likely to purchase a branded home in Egypt, compared to just 16% who consider it unlikely. Quality and finish of units, along with flexibility in year-round usage were the most important factors for home buyers. Wellness amenities and essential services, including maintenance, concierge services, and security also play crucial roles in investment decisions. Saudi HNWIs are most interested in attractive property prices (33%), high quality infrastructure (33%), and family-friendly lifestyles (31%). UAE buyers care most about coastal locations (32%), trusted developers (26%), and luxury lifestyle options (24%). UK and US respondents are mainly focused on property pricing and infrastructure, while German investors put more weight on Egypt\u2019s cultural and historic attractions (24%), along with coastal options.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Investors have different timelines:<\/strong> Some 17% of surveyed HNWIs are planning to buy property in Egypt during 2026.
