On a monthly basis, inflation rose by 0.6 percentage points to 1.9%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Driving the trend: <\/strong>Food and beverage price inflation, the largest component of the basket of goods and services used to calculate headline inflation, rose 5.0 percentage points to 11.0% in May. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What about core inflation?<\/strong> Annual core inflation \u2014 which excludes volatile items like food and fuel \u2014 quickened to 13.1% in May from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a4c4d001-d794-42ac-8f6a-a2719ec41973\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">10.4% in April<\/a>, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/en\/news-publications\/news\/2025\/06\/04\/08\/39\/cpi-press-release-may-2025\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from the Central Bank of Egypt. On a monthly basis, core inflation stood at 1.6% in May, compared with 1.2% a month earlier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>May's inflation reading came in above forecasts<\/strong>, including the central bank's <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2a14e89a-ecd2-4279-9309-ff06b2750da5\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">recent<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2a14e89a-ecd2-4279-9309-ff06b2750da5\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">projection<\/a> that price growth would continue to decline throughout the year, banking expert Mohamed Abdel Aal told EnterpriseAM. The rise in urban inflation \u201cdoesn't signal a long-term impact that would necessitate a return to monetary tightening or hint at a new, extended inflationary wave,\u201d Abdel Aal suggested. Instead, he attributed the rise primarily to seasonal increases in food commodity prices and the lingering cumulative effect of fuel price hikes. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/02eabfbe-a45d-4897-bbec-1f561e86ce93\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Analysts we spoke to<\/a> earlier this week saw annual inflation rising to 14.2-15.25% and expected monthly inflation to drop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>US tariffs are back in the spotlight after US President Donald Trump\u2019s <\/strong><strong>order <\/strong><strong>to double <\/strong><strong>levies on steel and aluminum to 50% came into effect on Wednesday.<\/strong> The increase, which Trump announced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5b6fc75c-9087-4a0b-ac24-a6dc72d5bcd7\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last week<\/a> and signed on Tuesday, is intensifying trade tensions as the US presses its trading partners to submit their \u201cbest offers\u201d ahead of a 9 July deadline or face higher tariff rates if no agreements are reached. \u201cThe golden age is here,\u201d the White House <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/1930013816177229901\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on X following the sign off. Rolling Stone <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/ai-spiritual-delusions-destroying-human-relationships-1235330175\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in May several instances where individuals exhibited similar behavior after engaging in deep conversations with large language models (LLMs). <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The psychology behind it: <\/strong>AI isn\u2019t inherently malicious \u2014 it\u2019s simply too accommodating. LLMs are designed to be agreeable, often functioning as digital sycophants that validate whatever users tell them. This creates a dangerous combination: AI systems that can greatly reinforce unstable beliefs, enable delusional behavior in individuals with personality disorders, and do so while sounding remarkably human-like.
