Today\u2019s issue is full to the brim, and includes a discussion with Mashreq Egypt\u2019s Mohamed Talaat about recent trends in Egypt\u2019s banking sector, as well as the challenges and the opportunities to expect this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>ExxonMobil to invest USD 240 mn in two new exploratory gas wells: <\/strong>US energy giant ExxonMobil plans to drill two offshore gas exploration wells in its Cairo and Masry concessions in the eastern Mediterranean beginning in 1Q 2026, with initial investments of USD 240 mn, a source told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asharqbusiness.com\/power\/69419\/%D8%A5%D9%83%D8%B3%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%85%D9%88%D8%A8%D9%8A%D9%84-%D8%AA%D8%AD%D9%81%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%A6%D8%B1%D9%8A-%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8%AD%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AA%D9%88%D8%B3%D8%B7-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1-%D9%85%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%B9-2026\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a>. Both concession areas were awarded to ExxonMobil in January 2023, with the company currently holding a 60% stake in the concessions after offloading a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2cf52dab-19a1-46a3-99f0-1ad026313784\/qatarenergy-to-acquire-40%2525-stake-in-two-of%253cmark%253e-exxonmobil%253c%2Fmark%253e%25e2%2580%2599s-offshore-exploration-blocks-in-egypt\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">40% stake<\/a> to Qatari state-owned oil and gas company Qatar Energy last year under a farm-in agreement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The wells are coming later than expected:<\/strong> We heard back in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3f769c52-1d6a-4846-9e63-4c875d1235ae\/exxonmobil-to-drill-first-exploratory-well-in-egypt-in-october.-plus:-oriental-weavers%25e2%2580%2599-net-income-doubles-in-2023\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">February 2024<\/a> that ExxonMobil would begin exploring for gas in the two concessions by the end of the year. At the time, the price tag was expected to come in around the USD 200 mn mark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ICYMI: <\/strong>The energy giant announced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/241ecfa8-b0df-4d63-9cf2-01c8a6c34205\/%253cmark%253eexxonmobil%253c%2Fmark%253e-discovers-natural-gas-at-its-first-ever-offshore-well-in-egypt.-plus:alqahtani-holding-%2B-tanmia-petroleum-%2B-enppi-%2B-petrojet,-alstom,-ci-capital,-misr-beni-suef-cement\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last month<\/a> that it had found natural gas at its North Marakia offshore concession after drilling at the block began in mid-December. The exploratory well \u2014 ExxonMobil\u2019s first in Egypt \u2014 has reportedly seen investments of USD 100 mn in the first phase of the exploration process. ExxonMobil owns 60% of the Mediterranean\u2019s North Marakia offshore concession, while Qatar Energy owns the remaining 40%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Donald Trump\u2019s bizarre plan to take over Gaza and clear out the Palestinians from the <\/strong><strong>enclave is still dominating the world\u2019s digital front pages. <\/strong>All major outlets are leading the news with yesterday\u2019s meeting between Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, which saw Trump suggest that the US would seize control of Gaza, displace its entire 2 mn population, and turn it into a hospitality and tourism mega project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Allies and enemies alike are denouncing the plan,<\/strong> including Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Hamas. While Egypt and Jordan had already refused to take in Palestinians living in Gaza per Trump\u2019s suggestion, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its support for an independent Palestinian state, with the country\u2019s foreign ministry saying that it \u201cwill not establish diplomatic relations with Israel without that\u201d in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KSAmofaEN\/status\/1886953044484473007\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">post on X<\/a>. Turkey and France have also rejected the plan, and Russia, China, Spain, Ireland, and the UK have reiterated their support for an independent Palestinian state in response to Trump\u2019s bank\u2019s retail banking segment.<\/strong> EnterpriseAM spoke with Mashreq Egypt\u2019s head of retail banking Mohamed Talaat (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mohamed-talaat-607a1742\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>) to discuss recent trends in Egypt\u2019s banking sector over the last year, and the challenges and the opportunities that the sector will experience this year. Below are edited excerpts from the interview.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>EnterpriseAM:<\/strong> What did it look like to roll out new major segments and new products against the backdrop of the macroeconomic challenges Egypt has witnessed recently?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Mohamed Talaat: <\/strong>When you look at the opportunities, you find that we are talking about a 67 mn bankable population, which is a huge opportunity for the entire banking sector. There is also significant focus from the Central Bank of Egypt and the government on promoting financial inclusion, which has greatly facilitated our role.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Looking back at last year, part of our strategy was to increase our market share by <\/strong><strong>offering diverse value-added solutions<\/strong> and a different kind of value proposition that caters to the needs of different customer segments. We launched two major segments \u2014 Mashreq Neo in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/490cdbcf-937b-4b6d-9ce9-9eb0ce115145\/contact-to-expand-in-saudi-in-2025.-plus:-news-from-b-investments,-talaat-moustafa-group,-adib,%253cmark%253e-mashreq%253c%2Fmark%253e,-madinet-masr,-idea-verde,-azimut\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">March<\/a>, and e& Mashreq Neo in April in partnership with the e& Group, with the primary goal of targeting financial inclusion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We have already tripled our market share in the past eight months, <\/strong>and we ended 2024 with around 360k retail customers at Mashreq Egypt. This just goes to show the availability of opportunities in the Egyptian market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: Financial inclusion seems to be a clear goal for you with the launch of Mashreq Neo.<\/strong> What does your individual customer base currently look like?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat: Our customer base is a reflection of Egypt as a whole. <\/strong>More than 60% of our retail customers at Mashreq Egypt are under the age of 30, with a significant portion aged 15-21. The early adopters of new technologies are around the ages of 15-30, which represent the majority of our customers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The ease of opening and activating Mashreq Neo and e& Mashreq Neo accounts has <\/strong><strong>been widely appealing to customers,<\/strong> who can download the Mashreq Egypt app and open a bank account in just a few minutes through simplified procedures. Customers can then activate the account at any Fawry or e& branch across the country, which are open for around 12 hours every day, seven days a week. They can then receive their banking cards within 2-3 days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But the appeal doesn\u2019t stop at the simplified procedures for opening an account<\/strong> \u2014 customers can also link their accounts to InstaPay, pay bills through it, earn points with every transaction, and receive a welcome bonus of up to EGP 2.8k.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: In October, you decided to raise the annual yield on Mashreq Egypt saving current <\/strong><strong>accounts to 23%<\/strong> \u2014 the highest savings account yield in the market today. Have you seen further growth since then?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat: Absolutely, there has been significant demand since then. <\/strong>We\u2019ve seen a significant increase in individual customer balances since that decision, which prompted us to extend this offer until the end of March 2025. We also maintain that, no matter what happens, our 23% yield, calculated daily, on savings current accounts will not drop below this level until the end of March for all deposits starting at EGP 5k. We also affirm that we will continue to offer the highest yield in the market after March.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: The 23% yield remains a very bold step. How are you able to do that while maintaining <\/strong><strong>profitability?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat: The potential customer base is very large but in order to attract that base you <\/strong><strong>have to work on several things,<\/strong> the most important being the customers\u2019 needs. We\u2019re always looking to meet a genuine need for the customer, focusing on offering attractive products \u2014 even if that could potentially impact our margins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: What are the key trends you see in the market today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat:<\/strong> <strong>The primary trend is the offering of products in a simplified digital format <\/strong>\u2014 which is aligned with the central bank and the country\u2019s overall direction. The penetration of smartphones across Egypt has exceeded 100%, so the trend is to provide all banking services through apps available on customers\u2019 phones. It\u2019s not just about enhancing customer experience, but also the form of the banking product itself. Alongside ease of access, products have to meet customer needs and offer a competitive advantage in the market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: How do you view competition with fintech and consumer finance companies in this <\/strong><strong>regard?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat: I don\u2019t see it as competition at all. <\/strong>You\u2019re in a huge market with a 67 mn bankable population, 45 mn of whom already engage with banks and financial services companies \u2014 there\u2019s still a massive opportunity for everyone. This opportunity sometimes calls for collaboration between banks and fintech companies, which we\u2019ve seen often. Additionally, fintech companies usually focus on a limited range of services, whereas banks offer a variety of products, from savings to financing, lending, investment, and insurance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: What about personal financing and lending at Mashreq Egypt?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat: We have already done friends and family tests for the Mashreq Neo and e& <\/strong><strong>Mashreq Neo credit cards, and we\u2019re preparing to roll them out this month.<\/strong> The Mashreq Neo credit card will include a number of benefits, such as 2% cashback features, installment plans, easy cash services, merchant discounts, and the option to select one of five dates for monthly credit card payment deadlines. The e& Mashreq Neo credit card will offer 3% cashback at all e& branches and 1.5% cashback at any location across Egypt. We are also planning to make personal loans available by April, with very innovative and attractive offers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: 2025 could potentially be entirely different for the banking sector. <\/strong>We might see declining interest rates, easing inflation, and the CBE\u2019s implementation of electronic know-your-customer services (e-KYC). What is your overall outlook for 2025?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat: We are very optimistic about 2025.<\/strong> We\u2019re definitely looking ahead toward the implementation of e-KYC \u2014 possibly in the second half of the year \u2014 which could make a significant difference for us and for the whole banking sector. It will help expand our sales volumes, grow our customer base, and streamline all procedures. The expected reduction in interest rates next year will certainly pose a challenge for the entire sector. However, we remain committed to offering the highest returns and best benefits to our customers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: What opportunities and challenges do you foresee this year?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Talaat: The implementation of e-KYC services will present a tremendous opportunity for <\/strong><strong>the entire banking sector,<\/strong> significantly improving financial inclusion and expanding access to banking services. The activation of payment card tokenization is also a major opportunity that will facilitate transactions and reduce banks\u2019 costs. Our belief in the future and the availability of opportunities in the local market encouraged us to make significant investments in Egypt. Challenges will always exist, but we believe that with the right tools and strategy, we can capitalize on available opportunities and overcome any challenge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E:<\/strong> <strong>What\u2019s next for Mashreq Egypt? Whether it was releasing the NGO\u2019s talks for free, or licensing the TEDx brand, Anderson wants to pass the baton to a leader who will preserve TED\u2019s core values while bringing fresh ideas to the table. The latest filing showed a break-even balance sheet of USD 100 mn and USD 25 mn in cash reserves. The three friends reunite years after graduating from university and begin plotting a small-scale scam to get together some cash. After pulling off the scam, the friends decide to double down on the life of crime and use some of their ill-gotten gains to scale up their operations. Things go south, though, and the three pals suddenly find themselves involved with a money laundering gang.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The series is interesting and manages to grab the viewer\u2019s attention from the first <\/strong><strong>episode til the very last <\/strong>\u2014 which isn\u2019t a surprise given Tamer Mohsen\u2019s stellar resume, which includes Newton's Cradle and Hatha Al Masaa. The casting choices were perfect considering the chemistry that Desouky, Kassem, and Galal have as the three protagonists.
