Even France, long the most outspoken critic of English\u2019s growing dominance, has in recent years <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-22607506\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">mulled<\/a> bringing English-medium classes into French universities, after many years of resisting the trend\u2019s expansion in Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>English has had some advocates, however: <\/strong>Indian activists have promoted English learning and use among India\u2019s Dalits \u2014 also known as \u201cuntouchables\u201d \u2014 as a countermeasure against longtime discrimination against the group, which they say is embedded in Indian languages. Advocates hope that English\u2019s high status in the country will afford Dalits greater respect and self-confidence, with prominent Dalit writer Chandra Bhan Prasad writing, \u201clearning English has become the greatest mass movement the world has ever seen.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Yet the question remains \u2014 what are the cognitive implications of English\u2019s dominance? <\/strong>Much of the concern around the impact of English use on thought can be traced back to early linguists who theorized a direct relationship between speech and thought. The vestiges of these theories form the basis of claims that if a given language is particularly gendered, speakers are more likely to think in misogynistic terms, or if a language lacks a future tense, speakers will have no conception of the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>These theories have largely been debunked<\/strong>, with academics like Stephen Pinker pointing out that common human experiences, like inventing new words for existing concepts, provide arguments against the idea that language always precedes thought. Meanwhile, the reinstated Investment Ministry now oversees trade alongside local and foreign investment initiatives. This restructuring also introduced Kamel El Wazir as deputy prime minister for industrial development and industry and transport minister.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The new gov\u2019t lays out a plan:<\/strong> Under its revamped agenda, the government has committed to a national strategy targeting industrial and trade competitiveness. It marked <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/60fef4bb-7de6-4a00-bf5a-e9ea88661f8e\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">key objectives<\/a>, such as achieving annual industrial output growth of 31.2% by FY 2026-27, and boosting exports to USD 130 bn by 2026-27 and to USD 145 bn by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Streamlining administrative hurdles: <\/strong>One of the year\u2019s standout reforms was eliminating the need to get approvals from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2a7406f7-7bea-4a31-a86c-1a4a67ce6781\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">23 separate entities<\/a> to set up an industrial facility, with the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) now the sole entity responsible for issuing approvals. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Reopening idle factories: <\/strong>Additionally, the government is mulling reopening 12k stalled factories, approving immediate reopenings and waiving accumulated penalties for previously operational facilities, a government source told EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Land allocation is key:<\/strong> One of the main challenges facing the new government in this vein was a limited availability of affordable, serviced industrial land plots, which the government sought to address through a commitment to offering some <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2a7406f7-7bea-4a31-a86c-1a4a67ce6781\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">10 mn sqm of industrial land<\/a> to investors under its plan to boost the sector in Sadat City, Borg El Arab, Sixth of October, Tenth of Ramadan, and Badr City. The IDA offered over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f309f00e-7d1b-4ede-bd10-9c6c1d1a253e\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">2.6k land plots<\/a> in December, spanning 15.2 mn sqm across 37 industrial zones in 24 governorates in December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Short on land plots? Not a problem anymore:<\/strong> The government has introduced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8408355a-0ba9-434c-9718-cc5a7d17b09f\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">vertical<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8408355a-0ba9-434c-9718-cc5a7d17b09f\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">expansion<\/a> measures, allowing factories to construct additional floors to boost production capacity. This is proving especially useful in zones where new industrial land is limited. Meanwhile, the government is making strides in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2deb336c-a235-4251-8b82-cb7fcbfa18d7\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">legalizing factories operating on agricultural land<\/a> under the Building Reconciliation Act, a move that could ease pressure on industrial zones and create room for growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Cutting red tape virtually:<\/strong> To leverage digital transformation advantages, the government launched the new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.madein.eg\/industryplatform\/portal\/home.xhtml\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Egypt Digital Industrial Platform<\/a>, allowing investors to book land, explore investment opportunities, and apply for permits \u2014 all via one online portal. The platform\u2019s coming updates will integrate payment systems and licensing capabilities, cutting out the endless loops of traditional bureaucracy. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>**We have the lowdown on the platform in <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c6b869cb-e868-4da4-9a22-1539fd12acbe\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Inside Industry<\/a><\/strong><strong> we published in September.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Financial incentives on the table:<\/strong> To sweeten the deal, the government has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/60e4abdd-98ec-4fc6-a26a-e7878239f73c\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">slashed the cost<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/60e4abdd-98ec-4fc6-a26a-e7878239f73c\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">of land application<\/a> fees by 50% to EGP 2.5k and reduced reservation deposits to just 10% of the total land value. Investors no longer need to submit bank guarantees, and a simple project summary now replaces exhaustive feasibility studies. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Momentum builds locally and internationally:<\/strong> These reforms are paying off \u2014 with streamlined land allocation and golden licenses on the rise, Egypt has seen significant localization wins. The country\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4877dd99-8875-41ad-aa96-2f4187d2b36a\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">first shipping container manufacturing plant<\/a> is officially in the works, old <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/af00b1d9-4bca-41fb-b711-ceeb70a4f020\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">aluminum foil factories<\/a> are being revived, and local production of routers and mobile devices is scaling up. Combined, these efforts are poised to save us hundreds of mns of USD annually in imports while positioning Egypt as a manufacturing powerhouse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The automotive sector experienced a serious growth in local production<\/strong>, with local auto player El Nasr Automotive <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e231a5e8-5a06-41ad-9464-d0385800c699\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">resuming operations<\/a> through a partnership with Al Safi Group. Auto feeder industries are also a key target of the government\u2019s localization push, with the state <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/40a33add-e842-4474-9e12-a1fac2730f08\/arab-organization-for-industrialization-to-set-up-tire-manufacturing-city-with-unnamed-chinese-partner\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">this month<\/a> releasing details on a raft of tire manufacturing projects as well as a new initiative to produce EV batteries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Foreign appetite for the auto industries:<\/strong> As Egypt\u2019s industrial landscape continues to evolve, foreign companies are increasingly eyeing local manufacturing opportunities, especially in the auto industry. Among the most significant moves is the plan by Al Mansour Automotive to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a13f17d5-404b-48f6-9659-a93d71ef029b\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">build a new assembly plant<\/a> for traditional and electric MG cars, in partnership with China\u2019s state-owned automotive giant SAIC. Additionally, Nissan has announced its intention to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b1112ddf-c9d4-47d8-ba90-0cd1d88d23a3\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">invest USD 55.9 mn<\/a> in the Egyptian market until 2026, while automotive player Kasrawy Group is preparing to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/074b28e4-4c6a-4250-8d0a-92baa8e26ef9\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">open a new plant<\/a> for Jetour vehicles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Investors flock to renewables:<\/strong> The renewable energy sector has also attracted substantial foreign investment. Polish renewables player Hynfra is planning a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2988052f-4d8a-44e3-bf27-2b2646fff746\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 10.6 bn green ammonia plant<\/a> in Egypt. Scatec, Fertiglobe, and Orascom Construction are progressing with their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/35f79ea0-0c98-4e26-864d-8237aebb4616\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">green hydrogen project<\/a>, while another collaboration between Orascom Construction, Engie, and Toyota will <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/49a2b46f-b33c-48aa-924a-b99ea95b13c2\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">soon add<\/a> another 150 MW to their 500 MW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Golden licenses as a key attraction: <\/strong>Turkish firm Beko began constructing a home appliance factory in 10th of Ramadan City with investments exceeding <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7ab1bb44-eba0-432c-b2cb-422fe8888369\/turkey%25e2%2580%2599s%253cmark%253e-beko%253c%2Fmark%253e-has-officially-set-up-shop-in-egypt-with-new-usd-100-mn-factory.-plus:-seic-%2B-abu-qir-fertilizers,%253cmark%253e-beko%253c%2Fmark%253e,-egyptalum,-zilla-capital,-city-lab-%2B-cairo-clinical-lab\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 100 mn<\/a>, securing a golden license for the project. Balkan for Food Industries was also granted a golden license in November for the establishment of a new factory in New October City to produce tomato paste and other food products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>China has the lion\u2019s share of fresh industrial investments in Egypt:<\/strong> China has been a dominant force in Egypt's industrial development, with the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) leading the charge. The SCZone in April <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7ef74ffd-fb8e-48ba-ba41-32d0fb5eff00\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed 14 agreements with Chinese companies<\/a>, paving the way for several projects in collaboration with local private-sector players. These projects include a USD 800 mn factory for fiberglass and polyester production by Chinese synthetic fiber manufacturer Xin Feng Ming Holding in the China-Egypt TEDA trade zone in Ain Sokhna. Meanwhile, CNG Egypt New Energy Glass, a subsidiary of China National Glass Holdings, has laid the foundation for a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/722791d9-a3ad-41d2-90f5-4bf67089a021\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 300 mn glass production facility<\/a>.
