and expectations, meaning that the way that we were raised isn\u2019t (and can\u2019t) be the same way we raise our children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s changing?<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2023\/01\/24\/how-todays-parents-say-their-approach-to-parenting-does-or-doesnt-match-their-own-upbringing\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nearly half<\/a> of those surveyed in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2023\/01\/24\/parenting-in-america-today\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> of 3.8k US parents indicated that they prioritize showing love and building relationships through unconditional support, opting for less yelling and more verbal affirmations and honest conversations about tough topics. Also, it seems that mothers \u2014 while more commonly having careers outside the home \u2014 still spend <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.russellsage.org\/publications\/changing-rhythms-american-family-life-1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">as much time<\/a> with their children as stay-at-home moms did in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Previously, parents were more concerned about physical safety, but recently the focus <\/strong><strong>has shifted to <\/strong><strong>mental health<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Three-quarters of parents expressed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/10\/health\/pediatricians-mental-health-crisis-teens.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">concern<\/a> that their children would struggle with anxiety, depression, or bullying, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/29\/upshot\/parenting-survey-research.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">NYT<\/a>. \u201cI try to have weekly talks with my kids to check in on their emotions to see how they are. Even if they had a good week, I have found it is still good to remind them you are there for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This is a response to difficulties that they encountered in their own childhoods.<\/strong> \u201cI didn\u2019t have a safe place to express my emotions of feeling understood,\u201d one mother told Pew Research. \"I don't want my children to go through what I went through,\" some of the parents <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/the-parenting-playbook\/202402\/welcome-to-modern-parenting-where-rules-must-have-reasons?msockid=1f4c24b56f6e6a541ad530e16e126b37\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Psychology Today. This ideology in itself has made parenting even more challenging, a sentiment that two thirds of the parents surveyed by Pew Research echoed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There is an overall higher level of emotional awareness when it comes to children.<\/strong> As psychological health made its way to the forefront of social awareness, children were seen as more <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/T\/bo3774502.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">vulnerable<\/a> to experiences impacting their upbringing. This led to parenting styles that are \u201cchild-centered, expert-guided, emotionally absorbing, labor intensive and financially expensive,\u201d Sharon Hays wrote <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.yale.edu\/book\/9780300076523\/cultural-contradictions-motherhood\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Cultural Contradictions of Motherhood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But some parents are doing too much.<\/strong> Intensive parenting <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s43076-022-00229-9#:~:text=It%20implies%20that,experiences%20between%20them.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">involves<\/a> investing all their energy, resources, and capacity for love, engaging in monitoring parental behavior, and putting off one's own desires in order to care for the children. Examples can start when a woman is pregnant and begins making major <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/310896\/expecting-better-by-emily-oster\/9780143125709\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">diet changes<\/a> to keep the baby safe, continuing onto excessive use of baby monitors, making homemade natural sunscreen, and eventually even <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/25\/upshot\/the-relentlessness-of-modern-parenting.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">calling their adult child\u2019s employer<\/a> to follow up on their interview.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>While this behavior is born out of the best intentions, this method may often harm the <\/strong><strong>children.<\/strong> Not having the opportunity for trial and error or learning from failure hinders a child\u2019s ability to solve their own problems, reducing their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/garybrowntherapy.com\/understanding-modern-parenting-styles-a-guide-to-nurturing-well-rounded-children\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">self-confidence<\/a> significantly. As children become less accepting of parental authority, overprotective parenting can exacerbate these issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Children have naturally become less dependent on their parents for information due to<\/strong><strong> their growing access for ideas from social media and their peers.<\/strong> Compared to previous generations \u2014 when parents played a strictly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/thrive-tribunes\/the-new-age-of-parenting-adapting-to-modern-challenges-and-embracing-collaborative-techniques-1b064d36bfc#:~:text=In%20these%20settings%2C%20the%20parent%E2%80%99s%20role%20was%20mainly%20authoritarian%3B%20their%20word%20was%20law%2C%20and%20questioning%20them%20was%20considered%20a%20sign%20of%20disrespect.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">authoritarian<\/a> role \u2014 recent generations are less compliant, leading them to ask more questions to understand why rules are set.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Every generation says this to their kids, but child-to-parent obedience really is going <\/strong><strong>down the drain.<\/strong> The phrase \u201cbecause I said so,\u201d is no longer enough when it comes to disciplining children, because children no longer accept rules as rules without <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/the-parenting-playbook\/202402\/welcome-to-modern-parenting-where-rules-must-have-reasons?msockid=1f4c24b56f6e6a541ad530e16e126b37\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">accompanying reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>P<\/strong><strong>sychologists are <\/strong><strong>concerned <\/strong><strong>that these techniques are leading children into high <\/strong><strong>levels of stress and dependence on their parents.<\/strong> According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10826-013-9716-3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2013 study<\/a>, children with hyper-involved parents <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/human-interest\/2015\/07\/helicopter-parenting-is-increasingly-correlated-with-college-age-depression-and-anxiety.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">tend to<\/a> develop more anxiety and less satisfaction with life, whereas children who are given space to be unsupervised develop social skills, emotional maturity, and future <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychology\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2014.00593\/full\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">executive function<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Striking the balance: <\/strong>While parents today prioritize emotional connections with their children and protecting their mental health, they also face the challenge of being over-involved and navigating the changing dynamics of parent-child relationships.
