This change will see the reduction of working hours, and will apply a three-day weekend starting Monday, 12 August through Monday, 30 September, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mediaoffice.ae\/en\/news\/2024\/august\/07-08\/dghr-announces-pilot-launch\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the Dubai government. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The details: <\/strong>Fifteen governmental agencies are participating in the initiative, with the goal being to help employees achieve a healthier work-life balance, reduce energy consumption, and enhance sustainability. The government will then evaluate the impact of the initiative to determine whether it will be implemented for the entirety of governmental agencies for future summer seasons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This comes as no surprise from the UAE: <\/strong>The country has been implementing a four-and-a-half-day work week for governmental agencies <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/edition\/pm\/f39a629f-448a-48a6-8b2e-2f238f9645df\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">since 2022<\/a>, with Sharjah independently adopting a four-day work week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Other countries are also moving in this direction.<\/strong> Driven by the studied <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ec454c30-7ad9-4634-99d9-b22b1169065b\/%253cmark%253efour-day%253c%2Fmark%253e%253cmark%253e-workweeks%253c%2Fmark%253e-are-good-for-your%253cmark%253e-bottom%253c%2Fmark%253e-line-%2B-could-carbon-credits-be%253cmark%253e-the%253c%2Fmark%253e-solution-to-stopping-deforestation%3F\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">benefits<\/a> or solving <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/nri\/work\/why-germany-is-launching-a-six-month-trial-of-4-day-work-week-from-feb-1\/articleshow\/107188892.cms?from=mdr\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">employment decline<\/a>, multiple countries such as Spain, Japan, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and most recently Germany, have begun implementing four-day work weeks for a number of companies and institutions. Others, like Greece, are steering the other way, which passed a law <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3af16ddc-e9a4-4bfd-b19a-80b8d87a70e6\/could%253cmark%253e-greece%253c%2Fmark%253e-be-onto-something%3F\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last July<\/a> allowing the option to work a six-day work week in exchange for a 40% salary increase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Will this actually promote sustainability?<\/strong> When testing the four-day system, Microsoft Japan recorded a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2019\/nov\/04\/microsoft-japan-four-day-work-week-productivity\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">23% decrease in the electricity cost<\/a> needed to operate offices in 2019, in addition to a 40% increase in productivity. The Spanish city of Valencia also recorded a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2023\/10\/31\/workers-in-valencias-4-day-week-trial-report-less-stress-and-more-socialising\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">58% decrease in air pollutants<\/a> last year due to a shorter work week. ultimately a testimony of the importance of a work-life balance. But for some \u2014 roughly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10643257\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">15%<\/a> of the global workforce \u2014 the motto is work hard, work harder. What may start as a noble work ethic may distort itself into an obsession and then into an addiction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Where do you draw the line?<\/strong> Logging some overtime out of dedication or enthusiasm is a sign of an engaged worker, not a workaholic, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7344159\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> behavioral scientist Toon Taris. Pulling the odd all-nighter during busy season or a big project doesn\u2019t ring any alarms either. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The red flags: <\/strong>What gives workaholism away is when your motivations, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are influenced by and\/or revolve around your work, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2020-08465-001\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> psychologist Malissa Clark. An \u201cinner compulsion\u201d to work, being preoccupied by work, and experiencing negative feelings during downtime are not markers of a healthy relationship with your job.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It could happen to you.<\/strong> Human resources specialist Jack Hassell interviewed self-diagnosed workaholics, and found that the issue spans across all <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/content\/doi\/10.1108\/IJOA-10-2023-4035\/full\/html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fields and identity backgrounds<\/a>. \u201cThe patterns of workaholism are essentially the same,\u201d he said, \u201cBut they arrived there in completely different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But people who share similar traits or roles may be more prone to workaholism. <\/strong>Some personality types \u2014 like perfectionists, extroverts, and people with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/health\/mind\/type-a-personality-traits\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Type A<\/a> personalities, are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0149206314522301\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">more likely<\/a> to slide down this slippery slope. One surprising commonality was that low self-esteem didn\u2019t seem to be a factor in the making of a workaholic, meaning that it was unlikely for it to come from a feeling of inadequacy or having to prove one\u2019s self.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Your employer might not want you to get better.<\/strong> In fact, they may try to exacerbate the proclivity to fall into that trap by stoking competitiveness in the workplace and normalizing long working hours, as was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annualreviews.org\/content\/journals\/10.1146\/annurev-orgpsych-111821-035514\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in the 2024 Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Workplace technology might be adding fuel to the fire too.<\/strong> Applications like Zoom, Slack, and even just email phone apps make workers easy to reach 24\/7, and make it difficult to create boundaries between work life and personal life. Receiving work-related notifications outside of working hours may pressure employees to respond promptly to demonstrate their commitment to their job.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Add the shift to the WFH model to the pile.<\/strong> Creating a workspace inside of your living space has also blurred the line between working hours and downtime. A physical distance between your office and your home creates a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/02\/remote-work-why-do-i-miss-commuting-psychological-detach-recovery-liminal-space-management-study\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">psychological detachment<\/a> that boosts your ability to recover from work. Without the material and mental distance, it becomes harder to gear up for work and harder to detach, aggravating the inability of those vulnerable to workaholism to \u201cturn off\u201d the impulse to work, creating a new group of always-on workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The kicker? Workaholism doesn\u2019t make you better at your job\u2026<\/strong> A 2016 study also conducted by Clark and her cohorts found <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2014-11436-001\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">no relation<\/a> between workaholism and job performance. Clark found that 89 studies conducted throughout the past two and a half decades showed that the higher a person scored on the workaholism scale, the lower they scored on life dissatisfaction.
