Egypt\u2019s non-oil activity held near the growth threshold at the start of 3Q 2024, with companies seeing only marginal declines in output and new orders, resulting in businesses capping their purchasing rates, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We were hoping that this would be the month that we would finally be in the green: <\/strong>July\u2019s reading dipped slightly to 49.7 in July, down from a three-year peak of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/13dd8c48-d8d8-405b-91ce-4d5640203db9\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">49.9 in June<\/a> \u2014 marking the 44th straight month that the country\u2019s non-oil private sector has been in contraction. News last month that the index showed us only 0.1 point away from the 50.0 mark that separates growth from contraction, had given some hope that July would show the private sector finally entering growth territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/finance2024.enterprise.news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/ads\/imgs\/272.jpg?ssl=1\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Japan\u2019s benchmark Nikkei index <\/strong><strong>took its biggest tumble <\/strong><strong>since October 1987 today <\/strong>as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/asia\/japans-nikkei-sees-biggest-rout-since-1987-black-monday-2024-08-05\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fears of a US recession<\/a> following disappointing US jobs numbers rattled Asian and European markets. The selloff saw the Nikkei plunge <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/global-markets-wrapup-1-2024-08-04\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">12.4%<\/a>, while over in the states, Nasdaq futures seem ready for their biggest opening drop in four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Analysts are pointing to low US jobs growth as the reason behind the global stock selloff:<\/strong> Markets have been pricing in a larger-than-expected 50 bps Fed rate cut since Friday\u2019s anemic US jobs growth data showed nonfarm payrolls increasing by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/rates-bonds\/view-soft-us-payrolls-number-opens-door-september-fed-cut-2024-08-02\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">only 114k in July<\/a>, down from 179k in June. Some of the year\u2019s hottest stocks have taken a beating as investors rush into safe-haven assets like US Treasury bonds, with 10-year yields briefly hitting their <a target=\"_blank\" All while chatbots still \u201chave no clear path to monetization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Disappointing earnings and outlooks from tech giants that have gone all-in on AI<\/strong><strong> spending <\/strong><strong>ha<\/strong><strong>ve helped send Silicon Valley stock into a tailspin. <\/strong>Amazon shares were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/02\/amazon-stock-down-12percent-after-third-quarter-outlook-disappoints.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">down<\/a> 8.7% at the end of trading last week and Intel stock took a double digit dive after announcing a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/01\/business\/intel-layoffs-chips\/index.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">scramble<\/a> to mitigate big AI spending by cutting USD 10 bn in costs and tens of thousands of jobs. Coupled with dispiriting <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">job data<\/a> recently published by the US Bureau of Labor statistics and a surprisingly bleak manufacturing index that caused concern of an approaching US recession, the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Russell 2k all <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/04\/stock-market-crash-economic-outlook-recession-ai-fueled-bubble-fed-rate-cuts\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">stumbled<\/a> significantly at the end of last week and seem set to continue the decline as US markets open today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Some investors expected \u2014 and maybe hoped \u2014 that the tech giants would soften their<\/strong><strong> gung-ho attitude and rein in AI spending.<\/strong> These AI-forward companies are being asked when the tech is expected to \u201ccreate greater value over time versus just cutting costs.\u201d Investors want to know whether AI monetization will ever match its capital expenditure requirements and whether all AI has generated was \u201ctoo much spend, too little benefit.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Instead of comforting or convincing numbers, Google, Microsoft, and Meta had opted to<\/strong><strong> double down on their AI expenditure<\/strong>, announcing plans to pour additional bns into the field, hedging all their bets on an AI-powered future. In addition to the additional greenbacks, tech leaders have asked for time. And a lot of it. \u201c[Fifteen] years and beyond,\u201d estimated Microsoft CFO Amy Hood. Meta CFO Susan Li was more vague, predicting returns \u201cover a longer period of time,\u201d making it out to be the cost of early market entry. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The cash cow is dead.<\/strong> Silicon Valley had long been a reliable source of profit growth on a quarterly basis, making it a hotspot \u2014 and safe bet \u2014 for investors.
