Founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), the NDB has expanded to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d7b8e96b-ec30-4ce0-9344-4f250f112875\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">include Egypt as of last April<\/a>, as well as the UAE and Bangladesh. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember:<\/strong> Egypt is planning to make an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/531e2aa1-9b1f-438f-becc-54db56b73c1a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">INR-denominated issuance<\/a> in India in 2024, Maait said last month. Egypt has been looking to issue local currency bonds abroad as global inflation and currency uncertainty has all but shut the country out of USD denominated bonds. Egypt closed a CNY 3.5 bn issuance in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/24a3b396-64fe-4ac7-8fd7-c6da54bdcb5a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a> and a JPY 75 bn issuance in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ce19e583-ed68-49db-9e75-f748b4f180ed\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a> last fall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- Chevron to kick off production in Nargis next year: <\/strong>US energy giant Chevron will reportedlystart producing gas from Egypt\u2019s offshore Nargis gas field in 1H 2025, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/y8864usm\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a> quotes an unnamed government official as saying. Chevron will initially produce some 600 mn cubic feet (cf) during the first phase of production, with production expected to jump to 1 bn cf within two years of operation, the source added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ICYMI- Chevron will reportedly invest USD 3 bn<\/strong> through 2025 to develop the Nargis gasfield, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0c54cb0e-a38c-4252-89ff-6511440baa27\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">unconfirmed reports<\/a>. The field <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid02KVJ2Pk5oZfXiv4gfmZDzFijknHqJQGRKig9oaN6ZsrrQLD7K315KAWgiU7HuhhHel\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">holds an estimated 2.5 tn cf of gas<\/a> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Dominating the international press today is Donald Trump\u2019s staggering lead in the Iowa polls<\/strong><strong> ahead of the caucuses tomorrow. <\/strong>Leading with 48% ahead of Nikki Haley\u2019s 20% and Ron DeSantis\u2019 16%, the former US president looks to be well-positioned for the Republican nomination, although DeSantis is still hoping for a turnover in Iowa to help him move up the ranks. Over in New Hampshire, Haley is doing a little better but still trailing behind Trump by 14 points. With expected severe weather coming up in Iowa, it\u2019s unclear how many voters will make it out to the caucus with campaign events being canceled ahead of the event. Meanwhile, Trump is spending time in courtrooms to defend himself against allegations of real estate fraud and attempting illegal means of retaining power after losing the 2022 election. These plans are all part of a strategy to cut down on Egypt\u2019s FX-heavy import bill, according to the Cabinet Information and Decision Support Center\u2019s recently released <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/1\/316.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a> outlining the government\u2019s economic strategy for President Abdel Fattah El Sisi\u2019s third term, which starts this April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">LOCALIZATION = SMALLER IMPORT BILL<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A bigger role for manufacturing in Egypt\u2019s economic activity: <\/strong>The government is looking to bring up the overall contribution of \u201ctransformative industries\u201d to 20% of total GDP, worth EGP 2.7 tn. It also wants manufacturing to hit an annual growth rate of 20% in 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And more local component contributions: <\/strong>The plan hinges on deepening and localizing the local manufacturing industry, as it aims to raise the percentage of local components used in manufacturing to no less than 60% by 2030, eyeing an average range of 60-80%. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The goal? More exporting, less importing: <\/strong>The government aims to increase the growth rate of exports of manufactured goods to at least 20% annually until the end of the decade, and is placing a particular emphasis on specific sectors such as the pharma and automotive industries, as it looks to become a major regional exporter in these sectors. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt wants to be a big regional player in the automotive sector:<\/strong> Egypt is looking to manufacture between 400-500k cars annually, with a particular focus on electric vehicles (EVs), and wants to increase its manufacturing of other vehicles including buses and tow trucks \u2014 a quarter of which will be allocated towards the country\u2019s exports by 2030. This falls under Egypt\u2019s yet-to-be-launched automotive strategy, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f58bf2e9-4bd9-4c62-a46a-9a277f99088e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Automotive Industry Development Program<\/a>, which is set to provide incentives to carmakers in a bid to increase local assembly and component manufacturing here, up the sector\u2019s competitiveness to become a regional manufacturing hub, and bolster export volumes. Implementing the program and becoming a regional export hub would save the country USD 4 bn a year, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In the short term: <\/strong>The government wants to increase manufacturing investments by 21% to reach EGP 101 bn, which contributes to generating an overall industrial output of about EGP 393 bn. It has also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7b170b6c-b674-4fe4-aea4-d207c8379fc6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">been planning<\/a> to launch 152 potential investment projects in the sector with the goal of strengthening local manufacturing to plug the import gap that is estimated to be around USD 30 bn. The government plans to include these projects in the Industrial Development Authority\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investinegypt.gov.eg\/English\/pages\/industrial-investment-map.aspx\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">investment map<\/a>, which it wants to turn into a detailed and dynamic map for priority sectors using a GPS system in 2024. It did not specify which projects it aims to focus on at this time, or when these goals are to be met.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Other manufacturing goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pharma exports to receive a boost: <\/strong>The government aims to increase overall pharmaceutical exports to USD 5 bn by the end of the decade. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Increasing Egypt\u2019s benefit from its mineral and quarry wealth,<\/strong> with the aim of reducing the import bill by at least USD 25 bn.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We\u2019re looking to export USD 20 bn to Africa<\/strong> alone by 2030. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">BIGGER, BETTER INDUSTRIAL ZONES<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt will nearly double its industrial zones by the end of the decade<\/strong>, with plans to have 32 industrial zones by 2030, up from 17 in 2023. The plan includes setting up seven new zones between 2023-2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The current layout of industrial zones: <\/strong>There are industrial zones <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/60a8a098-daaa-4bb0-94b6-b45b8cb8c22d\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">across the country<\/a> in different governorates, including Abu Rawash in Giza, Al Mahalla in Gharbia, Ataka in Suez, Mut Al Dakhla and Al Kharga in the New Valley, Al Kawthar and Tahta in Sohag, and Rubiky in Cairo.
