Long story short: It\u2019s a bottom-up operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A major point of contention is that many of the popular franchises being boycotted are <\/strong><strong>Egyptian-owned.<\/strong>Egyptian companies managing these franchises \u2014 such as McDonald\u2019s franchisee <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McDonaldsEgypt\/status\/1713563171804393553\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Manfoods<\/a> \u2014 have released statementsdistancing themselves from the pro-Israeli sentiments and actions of their parent companies. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>While their activities are indeed independent from the franchisors, their money isn\u2019t.<\/strong> Their net income may be exclusive to the Egyptian company, but annual royalties are paid in exchange for the use of trademarks and the right to manufacture specific commodities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But this could still bring about positive changes to the economy.<\/strong> Boycotting multinational corporations does mean restricting the money they inject into the national economy, but the sales they miss out on are redirected mostly towards local businesses, where the money will make its way into the national market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Aside from allowing local businesses and startups to flourish<\/strong>, the shift towards local products is indubitably beneficial from an economical standpoint. Developing the local economy will provide Egypt with more self-determination and security, alleviating some of our dependence on international commerce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>One example of local market growth is Spiro Spathis.<\/strong> The company is over a century old, predating the Israeli occupation. While it was established by a Greek expat, the company was founded and developed in Egypt. Over the years, it has struggled to keep up with foreign competitors, but it has seen a sales growth of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2023\/11\/12\/coca-cola-mcdonalds-boycott-israel-spiro-spathis-egypt\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">300%<\/a> as a result of the boycott. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE REAL CONCERN IS THE FATE OF THE EGYPTIAN WORKER-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egyptian businesses have rallied to support workers that may be affected by the boycott<\/strong>, promising to prioritize the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CzJjCKqr_Uh\/?hl=en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">employment<\/a> of those leaving international conglomerates. Executives have also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7126569056555479041\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">promised<\/a> employment to anyone affected by the movement to boycott Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>No layoffs have been reported as of yet here in Egypt<\/strong>,and none of the boycotted companies have made any statements that indicate that their employees are at risk. Helmi believes that it is unlikely that international companies will resort to dismissals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>While the increasing search for Egyptian alternatives was galvanized by the boycott,<\/strong>political sociologist Said Sadek told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/egypts-boycott-campaign-pro-israel-franchises-grows\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The New Arab<\/a> that it will persist for more reasons than public opinion. He believes that the rising FX rates and subsequent inflation provide more incentive to gravitate toward local products, and that this behavior would have existed as a natural trend even without moral motives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Local alternatives for food products are readily available, <\/strong>but commodities with few or inaccessible substitutions are difficult to replace.
